The Kuhistani Badakhshan Autonomous Region is an autonomous region in eastern Tajikistan.Located in the Pamir Mountains, it makes up 45% of the land area of the country but only 3% of its population.Darvoz District is the western ‘beak’ of the province. West-central Gorno-Badakhshan is mostly a series of east–west mountain ranges separated by valleys of rivers that flow into the Panj River. The districts correspond the river valleys. Murghob District occupies the eastern half of the province and is mostly a desolate plateau with high mountains on the west.

Khatlon Region is one of the four provinces of Tajikistan is the most populous of the four first level administrative regions. It is situated in the southwest of the country, between the Hisor (Gissar) Range in the north and the river Panj in the south and borders on Afghanistan in the southeast and on Uzbekistan in the west. During Soviet times, Khatlon was divided into Kurgan-Tyube (Qurghonteppa) Oblast (Western Khatlon) – with the Kofarnihon and Vakhsh river valleys – and Kulob Oblast (Eastern Khatlon) – with the Kyzylsu and Yakhsu river valleys. Both regions were merged in November 1992 into today’s Khatlon Region (or viloyat/oblast). The capital city is Qurghonteppa, formerly known as Kurgan-Tyube.

Khatlon has an area of 24,700 square kilometres and consists of 21 districts and 4 district-level cities. The total population of Khatlon in 2020 was 3,348,300 up from 2,677,251 in the 2010 population census. The population in Khatlon is mainly engaged in agriculture.

During the Soviet era, Khatlon became one of the two main cotton regions in Tajikistan, along with Sughd (Leninabad). Collectivisation of agriculture was implemented aggressively in the early 1930s, to expand cotton cultivation in Tajikistan as a whole, with particular emphasis on the southern part of the republic. The process included violations against peasants, substantial expansion of the irrigation network, and forcible resettlement of mountain peoples and people from Uzbekistan to the lowlands.

Districts under Central Government Jurisdiction is a region in Tajikistan, consisting of 9 districts and 4 district-level cities that are directly under central administration.Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, is surround by the Districts under Central Government Jurisdiction, but not part of it. The region covers an area of 28,500 square kilometres, and has a total population of 2,165,900 (2020),The Districts’ ethnic composition in 2010 was 85% Tajik and 11.7% Uzbek

The Districts under Central Government Jurisdiction cover much of the territory of the former Gharm Oblast which was dissolved in 1955. They were formerly known as Karotegin Region.The plateau is traversed by the river Vakhsh, a right-hand tributary of the Amu Darya. On the northern border run the Gissar and Zeravshan mountains, and on the southern border the Darvaz range 7,600 metres (24,900 ft). The winter climate is extremely severe; snow begins to fall in October and it is May before it disappears. During the warmer months, however, the mountainsides are richly clothed with the foliage of maple, mountain ash, apple, pear and walnut trees; the orchards furnish, not only apples and pears, but peaches, cherries, mulberries and apricots. Both cattle and horses are of a small and hardy breed.

Sughd Province is one of the four administrative divisions and one of the three provinces that make up Tajikistan. Centered in the historical Sogdiana, it is located in the northwest of the country, with an area of some 25,400 square kilometers and a population of 2,707,300 (2020 estimate),[1] up from 2,233,550 according to the 2010 census and 1,871,979 in 2000. The capital is Khujand (formerly Leninabad). It was founded in 1924 as part of Uzbek SSR and transferred to Tajik SSR by Soviet Communists in 1929.

The province shares a border with the Jizzakh, Namangan, Samarkand and Fergana regions of Uzbekistan, and the Osh and Batken regions of Kyrgyzstan. The Syr Darya river flows through it. It contains the Akash Massif and Mogoltau Massif Important Bird Areas. Sughd is separated from the rest of Tajikistan by the Gissar Range. The southern part of the region is the east-west valley of the upper Zarafshan River. North, over the Turkestan Range, is the Ferghana Valley.
