What’s more, a trip to the spa is perfect for any time of year. Throughout the summer, hike in the mountains or take a scenic bike trip around the lake before luxuriating in open-air pools, taking in the gorgeous panoramic views.

Tempted? Read on for a pick of some of the most notable spas in the country.

Vienna
Austria looks back on a long spa history, evidenced by the fact that its capital city is home to a wide range of facilities in and around the city. Austria’s spas have long been prized as social meeting hubs, so it’s perfect to combine fine Viennese wining and dining with friends with a stop-off at one of the city’s many fine spas.

Vienna is the only capital city in the world that can lay claim to its own thermal spa. Therme Wien to the south of the city is Europe’s biggest and most modern city spa. Its waters are heated by sulphur springs, which were popular even as far back as the Roman times. First opened in 1974 as Therme Oberlaa, it was converted to Therme Wien in 2010 and no features 26 pools, 24 sauna and steam rooms, 2,500 loungers and a 6,000-m2 (64,583 sq ft) health and fitness area.

Burgenland
The thermal spas in Burgenland have some of the oldest and richest traditions in the whole of Austria. Set in the stunning steppe landscape in the east of Austria, its climate is warm and the whole area lays claim to being Austria’s sunshine state, ideal when wishing to luxuriate some of the luxury outdoor pools or lounge at the side of the water. It boasts a number of thermal spas which are replete with healing spring waters.

Carinthia
More than 60 spas located in the vicinity of Villach and Bad Kleinkirchheim complement the traditional winter sports region of Carinthia.

Upper Austria
Upper Austria’s spas are fed from deep springs. Particularly during the winter, they are the perfect place to unwind and soothe sore limbs in warming, comforting water.

SalzburgerLand
The province of SalzburgerLand has a total of six thermal spas and water parks, concentrating on smaller boutique offerings rather than large thermal spas, which makes for the ideal place for some tranquil rest and relaxation amongst friends and family. The area of Bad Gastein is renowned for its therapeutic properties, with the Swiss physician Parcelsus spending time here in the 16th century. It was also a favourite haunt of Emperor Franz Josef I and his wife Sisi in the 19th century. They spent many a summer holidaying in the area to take in the healing powers of the thermal waters. These contain the noble gas radon, known for its curative properties and the presence of this in the water helped the area rise to acclaim and prosperity.

Styria
Styria is a fantastic choice when in search of rest and relaxation. The area’s spas take advantage of the region’s natural assets, and a lot of the local treatments make use of peat and salt. Get a massage with fragrant oil, visit a herbal sauna, or simply luxuriate in the area’s thermal springs.

Tirol
Try out Kneipp water therapy, the application of hot and cold water to boost the immune system, balance the circulation, be rejuvenated, and find a sense of inner balance.

In Austria, you will find amazing scenery, beautiful lakes, and stunning mountain ranges as well as lovely wine regions and national parks featuring diverse landscapes.

Everything About the Danube River
Mentioned in innumerable songs and much traveled, no river in the world flows through so many countries on its way to the sea as the Danube. This mighty river covers an astounding 2,889 km (1795 miles) from its source in Germany to the Black Sea. The Danube’s course from west to east takes it through ten countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Ukraine), and as Europe’s lifeline it unites a wide variety of peoples, religions, and cultures into a harmonious whole. The diverse, sometimes idyllic, sometimes nearly mystical landscapes that line its banks are shrouded in myth and legend.

The entire history of Central Europe was written on its banks, and the centuries-long exchange between peoples and cultures left behind traces that can still be experienced today. The Danube is lined with witnesses to the past: imposing monasteries and magnificent castles and palaces.

But not only the centuries-long encounters among the peoples of the Danube region are worth a closer look. Over the course of history, a wealth of cultural treasures was left behind by the legendary rulers of Europe as well, from Marcus Aurelius and Frederick Barbarossa to the Habsburgs. Thanks to an international cooperation among tourism organizations and shipping companies, visitors can embark on an enchanting journey along this historic travel route with all its splendid buildings and artistic treasures on the “Road of Emperors and Kings”, which leads from medieval Regensburg via Passau and Vienna to Budapest, the Hungarian capital. Pristine river landscapes such as the picturesque Danube wetlands and spectacularly beautiful pastoral spots like the Wachau Valley, as well as the countless opportunities for excursions to cities and towns both ancient and modern, make this journey an unforgettable experience.

Austria’s 7 Most Beautiful Lakes for Bathing & Swimming
It’s a perfect summer day. The waves lazily lapping against your feet, the sunrays dancing on the water. You can’t decide if the lake is more blue or green today. The one thing you do know is it’s so clean you can see all the way down to the ground, where tiny fish scurry about.

These are Austria’s most beautiful lakes for spending just such a day:
1. Achensee Lake in Tirol
Sometimes dubbed “Tirol’s ocean”, this lake was carved out of the Alps by glaciers more than 20,000 years ago. Today, it welcomes visitors with its emerald green surface and its crystal-clear water. Surrounded by picturesque mountains and lush green meadows, Achensee lake offers surfing, sailing, paddleboating, and diving to action-minded tourists.

2. Attersee Lake in Upper Austria
Located in the heart of Austria’s lake region, Attersee lake has a special artsy, laid-back flair. Enjoy a stroll through “Little Venice” – an area full of meditarrenan-style villas that used to belong to the likes of Gustav Klimt – then dip your toes into the cool water while admiring the rugged mountains that frame the lake.

3. Neusiedler See in Burgenland
Neusiedler See (or Lake Neusiedl) is pretty special in a few respects: It is, on average, only 1 m (3.3 ft) deep whilst being one of Austria’s largest bodies of water in terms of surface area. It is a steppe lake, and the landscape is characterised by vast meadows and reeds. Birdwatchers will find more species of birds here than at any other inland lake in Europe, and wine lovers will be able to try a variety of local vintages.

4. Weissensee Lake in Carinthia
Its location on the southern side of the Alps is unbeatable: You get all the mountainous beauty you could ask for, combined with 2,000 hours of sunshine per year. The fjord-like Weissensee lake welcomes you with clear, emerald water, great hiking and biking trails, and activities like surfing, stand-up paddling, and fishing.

5. Wolfgangsee Lake in Upper Austria and SalzburgerLand
Surrounded by forests, meadows, and mountains, Wolfgangsee lake (or Lake Wolfgang) straddles the border between Upper Austria and SalzburgerLand. On its shores, you’ll find one chocolate-box village after the other – visit St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, or Strobl if you get a chance. A vintage cable car takes you up Zwölferhorn mountain to one of the region’s most beautiful viewpoints.

6. Wörthersee Lake in Carinthia
Wörthersee lake or Lake Wörth is the largest lake in Carinthia, and, due to climatic conditions, one of the warmest Alpine lakes with temperatures of up to 28°C / 82.4°F. In the evening, visit one of the hip beach bars or first-rate restaurants on the shores, and watch the sun set over the lake. A fruity cocktail in hand, you’ll listen to the waves pattering and watch the warm sun rays reflect in the water’s surface.

7. Lake Zell in SalzburgerLand
Lake Zell is one of a kind: First, its crystal-clear waters will catch your eye. Then, you’ll look up at the majestic mountains surrounding it, crowned by a glacier (fun fact: you can go tobogganing all year here if you are so inclined). On the banks of the lake, the town of Zell am See offers laid-back street cafés, a promenade, and a hint of imperial flair. Spend the day relaxing at one of three lake lidos or try stand-up paddleboarding.

National Parks in Austria
Austria’s six national parks offer visitors the chance to discover nature in its original, untouched state and to come face to face with scenic beauty.

What is a National Park?
National Parks are designated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) based on strict criteria. In these spaces, preserving ecosystems is the number one priority. They also offer uniquely pristine surroundings to be enjoyed by visitors.

1. Hohe Tauern National Park in Carinthia, Tirol, and SalzburgerLand
Austria’s oldest and biggest National Park is known for its biodiversity: 50% of all Austrian animal species (10,000 in total) can be found here, including golden eagles, chamois, and marmots. The area’s rich, beautiful landscapes include Weißsee Glacier World, Pasterze glacier (Austria’s biggest glacier, where you’ll catch an icy breeze even at the height of summer), and Europe’s highest waterfalls, the Krimml falls.

2. Kalkalpen National Park in Upper Austria
Located at the northern edge of the Alps, Kalkalpen (literally: Limestone Alps) National Park is known for its wild forests and crystal-clear mountain streams which are home to rare species of animals and plants. Exploring the area on bike is a treat – and hikers will find hundreds of kilometres of trails. Park rangers can take you on guided hikes to explore the wilderness a little further.

3. Donau-Auen National Park in Lower Austria
Located between Vienna and Slovakia’s capital Bratislava, these wetlands are home to over 800 species of plants and animals.

4. Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Burgenland
This steppe National Park in eastern Austria features sweeping reef-studded bodies of water, large meadows, and saltwater lakes.

5. Gesäuse National Park in Styria
Established in 2002, Austria’s newest National Park features impressive cliffs and crystal-clear mountain lakes.

Austria’s Prettiest Places, According to Austrians
Every year, the Austrian public picks the country’s most beautiful spots in a live telecast. How about visiting one of these magical places?

Strutz-Mühle Mill, Styria
Enter the lovingly restored, 150-year-old Strutz-Mühle mill to see how flour was made in the old days and bake your own bread, then make a feast of it right outside while listening to the creek gurgle along. The surrounding area lets visitors explore the lush nature of a virtually untouched beech and spruce forest.

Lünersee Lake, Vorarlberg
Tucked away in the very west of Austria, Lünersee lake is a natural mountain lake at 1,970 m (6,500 ft) above sea level offering a variety of activities. Take the one-and-a-half hour hike around the lake (perfect even for the little ones), go higher with a climbing tour on Kirchlispitzen or Schesaplana mountains, or try your hand at fishing for rainbow trout and arctic char in the lake itself.

Schiederweiher Lake, Upper Austria
Schiederweiher lake is a small, man-made lake in Stodertal Valley in Upper Austria. Known as the “pearl” of the valley, it features an idyllic setting, crystal-clear water that’s home to many indigenous fish, and breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains, Spitzmauer (2,446 m / 8,025 ft) and Großer Priel (2,515 m, 8,251 ft). The area can be explored via a variety of easy hiking trails – both in summer and in winter.

Körbersee Lake, Vorarlberg
Situated in a basin at 1,656 m (5,433 ft) above sea level and surrounded by impressive mountain peaks, Körbersee lake boasts a pretty unique setting. It is up to eight metres (26 ft) deep and even in summer, only reaches temperatures of 14°C (57°F). The area around the lake is uninhabitated – save for a hotel that truly is a retreat from the rest of the world.

Kaisertal Valley, Tirol
Like a trip back in time: Until 2008, this unique valley in Tirol could only be reached on foot, claiming the title of Austria’s last inhabited valley without a road link. It’s still largely car-free: Only the 44 locals are allowed to use the road. Visitors will have to climb 285 stairs to reach the picturesque St. Anthony’s Chapel.

Formarin Lake and the Rote Wand (Red Wall), Vorarlberg
With its intensely blue water, Formarin lake almost has a mystical quality to it. Its backdrop is the rugged Rote Wand (Red Wall) mountain, making for a beautiful contrast. Situated at 1,793 m (5,883 ft) above sea level, the lake can be reached via a toll road or on foot.

Grüner See (Green Lake), Styria
The first time you see a picture of Grüner See (Green lake), you might get the impression it’s not quite real: Its waters are completely clear with an emerald shimmer, and underwater, you might find surprisingly well-preserved benches and bridges. This is because the lake all but disappears in winter, and only fills back up to its usual depth of over 10 metres (33 ft) during the melting of the snow in spring.

10 Reasons to Go Hiking in Austria
Whether you’re exploring one of the national parks, experiencing the beauty of the Alps on a long-distance trail, or heading out on a family day hike – Austria offers unlimited opportunities.

Whether you’re exploring one of the national parks, experiencing the beauty of the Alps on a long-distance trail, or heading out on a family day hike – Austria offers unlimited opportunities.

1. The landscape is incredibly varied.
From rolling hills and gentle pastures to rugged mountain peaks and glaciers, Austria offers a wide range of landscapes. Visit Europe’s highest waterfall, walk along quiet rivers and lakes, hike an actual glacier, or see the largest ice caves in the world.

2. Well-marked hiking trails allow for self-guided tours.
Even inexperienced hikers can easily go on self-guided walks in the Austrian Alps. Paths are clearly and consistently tagged via red-white-red markings on trees or rocks, and signposts along the way indicate directions, durations and sometimes even the trail’s level of difficulty. Simply make sure to take all necessary precautions such as checking the weather, choosing the right trail for your fitness level, and taking a map with you (tip: get one at your local tourist office!).

3. A break at an Austrian mountain hut is something special.
On most every sign-posted hiking trail in Austria, you will sooner or later come across a mountain hut offering local cuisine and sometimes accommodation for long-distance hikers. Have a glass of refreshing elderflower juice or a pint of beer before hiking on!

4. The home-made food is simply delightful.
In the mountain inns, home-made Austrian dishes, regional specialties and even produce right from the Alpine pastures are served. Cold plates are popular (such as the famous Austrian “Brettljause” – a substantial snack consisting of bread, cheese, and speck) and breads with all types of spreads, but also traditional warm dishes such as Schnitzel, Schweinsbraten (pork roast), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles) or Kaiserschmarren (sweet shredded pancakes).

5. Conquer any mountain with summer cable cars and chairlifts.
In most Austrian regions, you’ll find summer cable cars or chairlifts that will take you up to panoramic trails and scenic summit platforms, allowing holiday-makers of all abilities to enjoy fantastic views.

6. Austrian hiking trails are perfect for families.
There are plenty of hiking trails in Austria suitable for the entire family. Discover adventure hiking trails with interactive stations, explore educational trails, or find easy, pushchair-accessible walking trails. Many of Austria’s hotels – such as the Kinderhotels – specifically cater to families.

7. You’ll find untouched natural landscapes.
About 27% of the Austria’s surface is under natural protection. 6 national parks, 50 nature parks, 7 biosphere reserves, and a host of locally protected areas have been set up to protect unique species, cultural landscapes, and traditional ways of living. Many regions in Austria have also started to implement a sustainable tourism scheme which encompasses car-free holidays, promoting e-mobility or locally-sourced food and energy. The Austrian National Parks also offer dedicated educational programmes.

8. Hiking in Austria has a long tradition and is part of the local culture.
Hiking has a long tradition in Austria and is the country’s unofficial national pastime. Dedicated to hiking or mountaineering, Austria’s “hiking villages” are a perfect base for a holiday with day hikes of varying difficulty levels. These villages offer special services for your hiking holiday, such as free help to plan your hiking tour and free guided hikes.

9. Easily combine nature and culture.
There are several cities in Austria that make combining culture and hiking breaks easy. The best example is probably Innsbruck, sometimes dubbed the “capital of the Alps”. Salzburg, the city of music, is also a perfect base for a hiking holiday in the surrounding mountains.

10. Get the full Austrian experience.
Austria offers a huge variety of different hiking options and themed walks. Conquering one of the countless mountain peaks, hiking from pasture to pasture, embarking on a multi-day hike, or just enjoying a leisurely day hike – all of it is part of the Austrian hiking experience.

Austria’s Top 10 Summit Platforms
Nothing quite beats the feeling of reaching a summit and looking down at the world. It is a feeling of freedom, of thrill, of exhilaration – and Austria’s summit platforms are the best places to experience it.

1. Dachstein Mountain, Upper Austria/Styria
Located centrally within Austria on the border of Upper Austria and Styria, Dachstein mountain stands at 2,995 metres (9,826 ft) high. And yet, reaching its summit is not as difficult as one might think: From the town of Ramsau am Dachstein, take a cable car up to 2,700 metres (2,296 ft) and watch the green pastures below turn into rugged rocks, as the lift passes by craggy cliffs. Right next to the mountain station, the first of four spectacular viewpoints awaits: the Dachstein Sky Walk.

2. Pyramidenkogel Platform, Carinthia
Located in Carinthia in Austria’s sunny south, the corkscrew-like Pyramidenkogel is the highest wooden viewing tower in the world (100 m or 1,312 ft). The best part: you can take an actual slide back down.

3. Hohe Wand Sky Walk, Lower Austria
Set within the Hohe Wand nature park just an hour outside of Vienna, this observation deck offers long, panoramic views, and a feeling of limitless freedom.

4. Adlerhorst Viewing Platform, Tirol
Situated along the Eagle Walk, Tirol’s award-winning long-distance hiking trail, Adlerhorst viewing platform is modelled on an eagle’s nest and made from wrought-iron metal. Here, on top of Gschöllkopf mountain, a 360-degree view awaits. Great as a destination for hiking trips!

5. BIG 3 in Ötztal Valley, Tirol
Sölden in the Tirolean Ötztal valley is home to no less than three mountains over 3,000 metres (9,843 ft) – the “Big 3”. Cable cars will take you to viewpoints on each of the three peaks, where you’ll be able to see as far as the Italian Dolomites in the south and the Zugspitze (Germany’s highest mountain) in the north.

6. Kitzsteinhorn Mountain, SalzburgerLand
Two hours from the city of Salzburg, a year-round world of snow and ice awaits: Located at 3,000 metres (9,843 ft), the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the “Summit World 3,000” have amazing views and experiences in store: Take a guided hiking tour or go tobogganing in the middle of summer!

7. Top of Tyrol, Stubai, Tirol
Glacier summit platforms tend to offer spectacular views, but the Stubai Glacier is taking it one step further: Located at 3,210 metres (10,532 ft), its Top of Tyrol viewing platform makes you feel like you’re suspended in air and has views of 109 (!) mountains that measure above 3,000 m (9,842 ft).

8. Coral Viewing Platform, Tirol
The Triassic Park in the Steinplatte region of Tirol is dedicated to the primordial ocean that covered the land here 200 million years ago. Fittingly, the local viewing platform is shaped like a coral, one of the fossils commonly found in the area. If you’re rather safety-conscious, stay on the non-transparent coral-branch parts of the platform, but if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, step out onto the large-meshed grid between the branches.

9. Top Mountain Star, Tirol
Perhaps the best place to have a cocktail with a view: The futuristic, glass-enclosed Top Mountain Star in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is not just a viewing platform, but also a stylish restaurant and bar.

10. Glocknerblick Viewing Platform, SalzburgerLand
The Glocknerblick Viewing Platform in Bad Gastein (1.5 hours from the city of Salzburg) gives you a stunning view of Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner. Be sure to visit Europe’s highest suspension bridge on the way there!

Austria offers countless cycle and mountain bike paths for all ages and interests. We’ve selected the top regions in Austria for you to discover on two wheels.

Salzkammergut Lake District Tour
The “Salzkammergut” lake region in Upper Austria offers a great number of lakes in a beautiful Alpine environment. In recent years it has become one of the most popular vacation spots in Austria.

This bike trip will introduce you to the great Salzkammergut region, taking you to no less than 13 lakes while offering you a chance to break up your cycling with swimming, fishing, sailing, and hiking. This tour is a loop which allows you to start your adventure anywhere along the route.

From the official starting point is Salzburg, the route continues southeast to St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee lake, and then along to St. Wolfgang and Bad Ischl, our former emperor’s Franz Joseph’s favourite stay (we suggest visiting his former hunting lodge).

Further south, the trail will lead you into the picturesque town of Hallstatt. For a picture perfect view of the town, take the ferry and enjoy one of the country’s best photo ops. Stop at the ice caves near Obertraun. The loop continues via the Traunsee, Attersee, and Mondsee – all of which offer some great water activities.

Vorarlberg Trail and Bodensee Lake Loop
Experience the diversity of Vorarlberg’s scenery on the bike trail between Bludenz and Bregenz.

This popular cycleway travels along the Austrian, German, and Swiss shores of Bodensee lake and is lined with numerous attractions – don’t forget to bring your passport! Surrounded by a majestic mountain backdrop and and nestled between five valleys, the Medieval Alpine town of Bludenz is the perfect starting point for this Alpine adventure. Bludenz can easily be reached via train (closest airport gateway is Zurich) and besides cycling offers great hiking, fishing, and shopping. For chocolate lovers, don’t miss a tour of the Suchard chocolate factory where the famous “Milka” (the purple chocolate you find in every Austrian store) is produced.

The bike trail follows the Ill river to Feldkirch with its Medieval town centre and the majestic Schattenburg castle. Following the Rhine River north, you will eventually reach Bregenz, known for its summer music festival performances on a floating stage on Bodensee Lake. From Bregenz you will connect to the international Bodensee Lake loop, allowing you to visit Germany and Switzerland as well. If your legs are feeling worn out, you can take a short-cut on the ferry to Konstanz. The loop will bring you back to Bregenz on the south shore of the lake. For added variety, parts of the loop may be accomplished by boat.

Scenic beauty, Europe’s highest waterfalls, a visit to Salzburg, and countless attractions along the way.

This may very well be one of the most exciting cycling tours in Europe. Scenic beauty, Krimml: Europe’s highest waterfalls, a visit to Salzburg, and countless attractions lie along the way. Highlights include Liechtenstein gorge and Hohenwerfen castle. The starting point of this bike trip is the small village of Krimml, amidst the Hohe-Tauern National Park region. With its impressive waterfalls and exciting hiking excursions, it might take you an extra day to leave Krimml and get started on your journey.

The bike trail will follow the Salzach River through charming villages to Zell am See, a picturesque summer and winter resort. Here you will have two options for your way to Salzburg: first, you can continue along the Salzach River with a chance to visit the world’s largest ice caves in Werfen, or the salt mines in Hallein.

Or you can take the (even more) scenic route along the Saalach River, visiting charming places like Maria Alm and Lofer and taking a short cut through Bavaria into Salzburg. From Salzburg the bike trail will lead north through Oberndorf (with the Silent Night chapel) to the German border town of Passau where you may connect and continue to the Danube bike trail towards Vienna.

Starting at the historic German border town of Passau, the trail follows the Danube River (Europe’s second largest) through the beautiful landscape of the Upper-Danube Valley into Vienna. Your journey through time takes you on past towns from Roman times, Baroque monasteries, and churches to the wild romance of the Strudengau and to Grein. Along the way, you’ll see the city of Linz, the Baroque abbey of St. Florian, many nearby castles, and of course the famous “Wachau” region with its charming villages, vineyards, and romantic fruit orchards. Don’t miss a visit to the Baroque abbey of Melk overlooking the Danube.

Other must-see stops on the tour include Dürnstein, with its ruins where King Richard the Lionhearted was captured on his way back from the Crusades, and the 1,000 year-old town of Krems. For those wishing to cycle further along past Vienna, the Hainburg area close to the border with Slovakia is the end of the marked bike trail.

The 5 Best Places for Snowboarding in Austria
Endless slopes, untracked powder snow – these are Austria’s top 5 places to go snowboarding.

Endless slopes, untracked powder snow – experience the Austrian mountains off the beaten track with a guided snowboard tour or take to one of the many fun parks.

1. St. Anton, Tirol
St. Anton in Tirol is a winter classic: Sometimes dubbed the „cradle of Alpine skiing“, snowboarders are just as welcome on its slopes. You’ll find great powder runs here, and STANTON Freestyle Park with its kickers, rails, and boxes of varying difficulty levels has established itself as true freestyle highlight in the past years. It’s easily accessible via two lifts, and if you need a break, the Rendl terrace with its bars and restaurants provides great views over the entire park.

2. Ski Amadé, SalzburgerLand & Styria
Just a stone’s throw (60 km / 37 mi) from the city of Salzburg, you’ll find Austria’s largest skiing region, consisting of 25 skiing resorts, 760 km (472 mi) of pistes, and 270 lifts. Snowboarders will find fun parks and snow parks, half-pipes, obstacle courses, and amazing powder here.

3. Sölden, Tirol
Sölden in Tirol holds a special place in the hearts of party people worldwide. But before the party, it’s time for the pistes: One of the area’s strong suits is its state-of-the-art infrastructure with steel and concrete lift buildings and newly developed queueing systems to make sure people don’t have to wait. For snowboarders, the Sölden Snow Park atop Giggijoch mountain offers both challenges for experts and surface level features for beginners who have never been in a terrain park before.

4. Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, SalzburgerLand
At the Skicircus, you’ll find a huge variety of slopes for all levels of ability. Even more so thanks to the newly launched ALPIN CARD ski pass, which gives you access to two additional ski regions (Zell am See & Kitzsteinhorn glacier) and a whopping 408 km (254 mi) of pistes for a great price. Snowboarders in search of excitement cab head to the fun slopes at one of the area’s fun parks such as the Nitro Snow Park in Leogang with its many obstacles, rails, and jumps.

5. Vorarlberg, Austria’s Westernmost Province
For a bit of a quieter snowboarding holiday, head to the smaller ski areas in Austria’s west. The Montafon Snow Park close to the Swiss border is one of the biggest and best terrain parks in the Alps, catering for all skill levels. Crystal Ground Snow Park in Kleinwalsertal is known for its creative and ever-changing setups, and Lech Zürs is home to Lech Snow Park with its dedicated pro line alongside 305 km (190 mi) of perfectly groomed pistes.

Off the slopes, you can soak in the après-ski experience, relax in your hotel’s spa, or while away the hours in a pretty local village or town.

9. Obertauern, SalzburgerLand
The resort of Obertauern, at an altitude of 1,740 m / 5,708 ft, boasts some of the most reliable snow conditions in Austria. There’s excellent skiing here from late November right through to early May. An Olympic centre and high-altitude training site offer everything that winter sports guests could possibly be looking for.

10. Sölden / Ötztal, Tirol
Skiing in the Ötztal Arena starts at 1,400 m (4,593 ft) above sea level and goes right up to 3,249 m (10,660 ft). The “Golden Gate to the Glacier”, the ski link to the region’s glacier skiing area, opens up nearly 150 km (93 mi) of ski pistes, with a panorama of 9,840 ft / 3,000 m peaks as a backdrop wherever you look. The FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup and the FIS Snowboard World Cup – the first of a great number of glacier events and highlights – celebrate the season’s opening in mid-October.

5 Activities Beyond the Ski Slopes
Not everyone feels inclined to track up a mountain in snow shoes. However the reward that awaits you is quite grand: an unforgettable experience in the majestic Austrian Alps, beyond the flurry on the ski slopes. Here are 5 activities to enjoy winter in Austria away from the slopes.

1. Snowshoeing
Far away from the prepared slopes and runs you can reach well beyond what others will experience. Enjoy spectacular views off the beaten path and marvel at fresh snow clinging to a mountain cliff, glistening. You might even see timid wildlife or just simply enjoy the undisturbed splendour of a glacier.

An especially impressive snow shoe trail can be found in the Rauris Valley in Salzburg’s countryside. Before the trail leads into the forest, you will be amazed by the majesty of the soaring 3,000-metre (10,000 ft) peaks above you. After three hours of snowshoe hiking, you’ll have earned a hearty meal at the Alpengasthof Ammererhof. We suggest borrowing a toboggan for the ride back down – or spend the night in one of their cosy guest rooms.

2. Winter Hiking
Do you prefer to take it a bit easier? May we suggest to simply don warm footwear and set off for a winter hike. There are countless, specially prepared trails at all altitudes across Austria that lead through enchanting forests, over sun drenched mountain pastures, or even into some of the highest mountain regions. Ascend the mountain by cable car and start off from there, as in the Mauterndorf ski area. Or just start walking, there are plenty of hotels located directly on hiking trails.

3. Igloo Building
This is certainly one of the more unique ways to spend a winter vacation. In the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena you can enroll in an igloo building workshop – a fascinating experience for people of all ages. What impresses most is that even on the coldest days the temperature in the interior of the igloo remains above freezing and, thankfully, clothing and sleeping bags stay dry after you have settled down for the night.

4. Dog Sledding
A ride on a dog sled is an unforgettable experience – and not just for the kids. When you stand at the back of the sled pulled by huskies, you are able to experience the winter landscape in a unique way. This Alaskan adventure is yours to have in the heart of the Waldviertel region. In a dedicated workshop, you’ll learn about caring for huskies, the most important aspects of manoeuvring a sled, and the commands that the dogs understand. All this can be put into practice straight away of course, under the watchful eye of a musher. Workshops are available in a variety of locations, such as Kühtai in Tirol, Sportgastein, and Brandnertal valley in Vorarlberg.

5. Tobogganing
A true winter classic during the day as well as at night. The most powerful floodlight system in all of Europe illuminates the toboggan run on the Hirschenkogel at Semmering during long winter evenings. The World’s Longest Floodlit Run can be found on the Wildkogel in Salzburg; an unbelievable 14 km (8.7 mi) and the entire length is lit at night.

True friends of nature, however, stick with the tried and true methods of yesteryear. Grab a torch, get a sled, and stroll up the mountain over snow-covered paths through forests and pastures.

Ice Skating in Vienna
Come to Vienna for the ultimate magical winter experience: ice skating whilst surrounded by magnificent historic buildings. The sound of rhythmic music coming from the distance whilst you’re in Vienna’s snow-covered Stadtpark is a sure sound that things are in full swing at the nearby Eislaufverein. This sweeping ice rink is just a few steps away from the impressive facade of the Wiener Konzerthaus Concert Hall.

Fun on the Ice
The artificial ice at the rink in the heart of Vienna is as smooth as glass and perfectly groomed. To get in on the fun all you have to do is hire a pair of ice skates from the well-stocked hire shop.

All those who aren’t quite ready to get in on the action can simply stand and watch. Figure skaters and hockey players each train here in their own separate areas, but most of the rink is given over to recreational skaters of all ages.

Waltz music drifts in from the loudspeakers, creating a warm atmosphere and the buzz is palpable and infectious. The Eislaufverein celebrates looks back on an impressive 150 years of history in Vienna, and is an integral part of the winter cityscape. During the 1920s, the then almost 6,0378 sq. m. (65,000 sq. ft.) rink was the largest in the world. Today, it is an impressive 9940.6 sq. m. (107,000 sq. ft.) and just as enjoyable an experience to skate on as ever.

150 Years of Skating
There’s a refreshment stall in the middle of the ice rink, perfect for taking a break from the skating. Whilst enjoying a steaming-hot drink it’s easy to fall into conversation with fellow skaters who can tell you a little bit about the history of the venue and how things have changed over the years.
