BAHRAIN FORT AND MUSEUM
Known as Dilmun in ancient times, Bahrain’s rich trading history is reflected in numerous archaeological sites, the most fascinating of which is the Bahrain Fort site that is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort is located atop a 17.5 hectare artificial hill that has been built over more than 4000 years of continuous occupation. It is the site of the former capital of Dilmun and one of the most archaeological sites in the Arabian Gulf. The excavations over the past 50 years have revealed residential, public, commercial and military structures that testify to the importance of the site over the centuries. These findings are brought to life by an audio guide available at the site museum.

Open to the public since 2008, the site museum display area consists of 5 exhibition halls organized around a massive Tell Wall. With 500 artefacts showcased, the long settlement history of the site is evoked to the unique backdrop of the wall, which recreates the different archaeological layers uncovered at the site. The seaside café of the museum offers a stunning view over the fort and the surrounding palm groves.

SHEIKH SALMAN BIN AHMED AL FATEH FORT
Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al-Fateh Fort, commonly known as Riffa Fort due to its location in Riffa, is an historic landmark and stands witness to one of the most important junctures in Bahrain’s history. Within its beautiful architecture lives the memory of the ruling family of Bahrain, the Al Khalifas.

A series of programs organized by the Ministry of Culture have brought life back to the fort and not only present a chronological history of the Al Khalifa family but showcase the interior space designed by the French firm, La Meduse and the local engineering firm, PAD, which took its inspiration from the fort’s history and people.

BAHRAIN NATIONAL MUSEUM
The Bahrain National Museum is the crowning achievement of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to preserve the nation’s heritage and history; Efforts which began in 1957 when the first exhibition of the artefacts discovered by the Danish archaeological expedition was held at Al-Hidaya Al-Khalifiya in Muharraq.

The museum was inaugurated in 1988 by the late Emir Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa in a grand ceremony attended by His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister, and then Crown Prince His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Built on a central location between Manama and Muharraq, Bahrain National Museum houses 9 main halls, and classifies the accumulated heritage of the Kingdom of Bahrain into 6 different sections. Visitors to the museum will be taken on a 4,000 year journey through time as they pass through its halls, from the traditional handicrafts hall, to the customs and traditions hall, burial mounds hall, ancient documents and manuscripts hall, Tylos hall, and Islamic period hall.

The museum seeks not only to enhance understand and knowledge of Bahrain’s history amongst locals only, but also play a role as an institutions which promotes global culture within the community, as evidenced by the numerous international culture and art exhibitions it has hosted over the years.

ADHARI PARK
Adhari Park is a brand new visitor attraction in Bahrain adjacent to the existing Adhari National Park. Spread across 165,000 square meters, it provides a complete leisure experience for the whole family, aiming to become the number one family attraction in the GCC, with 38 exciting outdoor and indoor rides for people of all ages, a Family Entertainment Centre, 10 food outlets at the Food Court, Dine in restaurant,Coffee Shops and a lot more.

AL AREEN WILDLIFE PARK & RESERVE
Extinction is not a thing of the past. Habitat loss, competition for food, pollution and mammal predation are all still playing a big role in the animal kingdom all around the world.

The Kingdom of Bahrain was perhaps the first Arab country to realize the rapid decline of many native wild animal populations in the region and the urgent need to implement safety measures that could ensure their survival. The establishment of Al Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve was as a response by the Kingdom of Bahrain to the conservation of wildlife in the Middle East. It was hoped that the establishment of such a reserve, would promote similar projects in other countries in the region.

AZIZIA BIRD KINGDOM
You have several options to enjoy bird watching. Take 20 minutes boat ride to Hawar Islands sanctuary of wildlife reserve and home of numerous bird species either native or migratory birds. Or take a ride to Al Areen Wiidlife Park & Reserve next to Bahrain International Circuit or to Azizia bird kingdom at Amwaj islands

BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) is an ultramodern motorsport facility that is located in the heart of the Sakhir desert. Designed by the renowned German engineer Hermann Tilke, the circuit incorporates many features of local culture.

Costing approximately $150 million, the entire facility took less than 18 months to build – quite a feat considering the massive undertaking that was needed to develop the land.

BIC features five FIA certified track layouts, more than anywhere else in the world . This allows the circuit to host a range of motor racing events. The 5.412-kilometre Grand Prix Track regularly hosts international races, including the Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, the FIA World Endurance Championship Six Hours of Bahrain, races in the GP2 Series and the Porsche Mobil 1 Super cup.

DAR ISLANDS
Central to life in Bahrain for centuries, pearl diving has to be the quintessentialBahraini experience. The beach resort of Al Dar Island offers regular pearl dives and cruises to Jarada Island where you might find yourself sunbathing on the spit of white sand and bobbing in its clear waters all on your own. In addition to pearls, you can also get the chance to see up to 30 types of coral and more than 200 species of fish. Dolphin watching along the many surrounding coral reefs is another popular pastime and they are best spotted at sunrise or sunset.

Bahrain is famous for its gorgeous pearls which used to make their way all over the world from its bustling ports. Contrary to popular belief, it was these precious jewels from the sea that first made this Middle Eastern hub rich, rather than its more famous oil. In recent times however, this liquid black gold has taken over and Bahrain has become known less for its aquatic gems and more for its oil refineries.

As this business has progressed however, the oil is being drained from the arid lands of Bahrain at a startling rate, and this little old island is now having to look for new income streams to stay ahead of the game. Just some of these include two major players in the form of banking and tourism.

The first of these is not very relevant to visitors to this island, but the second is a great addition to Bahrain’s portfolio. With this in mind, people flock to Bahrain despite a downturn in tourism in the Middle East as a result of the Arab Spring, and it remains a popular place for those looking for an exotic enclave with lots of interesting and engaging attractions.

Thousands are now visiting Bahrain to see the crumbling ruins of the old Dilmun civilizations, the mighty fortress of Qalat Al Bahrain, the famous scuba diving sites, and the quaint desert towns and craft centers that dot the country.

Manama
At first glance Manama might not seem very exciting, and you may write it off as just another gilded metropolis that can be found all across the Middle East.

If you explore beneath the shimmering buildings however and the steel-grey skyscrapers that line the Corniche al-Fateh, you will find an exciting Arabic city that has a rich history and engaging culture.

Some of the great highlights in Manama can be found in the throbbing souks where you can discover spices, pearls, and exquisite carpets, and you can also take a trip to the Bahrain National Museum to learn all about the Portuguese and Persian past of this city.

If you so desire, you can also find swish shopping malls aplenty, as well as luxury resorts that nestle along the Gulf Coast.

Riffa
Riffa is located in the heart of Bahrain and it used to be the largest city in the country, before being usurped by its big brother Manama.

As a result, this town is full of old world character and you can see ancient sights such as the great Riffa Fort which has amazing crenulated bulwarks and antique court rooms.

You will also find winding shopping streets as well as authentic Arabic bazaars which make this a great spot to pick up some trinkets like pearl necklaces and Middle Eastern spices.

As you would expect, the modern mixes with the ancient here, and one of the most famous golf courses in the Middle East is also found in Riffa.

Juffair
The Amwaj Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Bahrain and present a lesson in Middle Eastern opulence.

The islands are made, as is often the way here, from 100% reclaimed land and you will find spectacular whitewashed towers here as well as luxury apartments.

There are billionaires’ yachts bobbing on the private jetties and some of the best beaches in Bahrain are found here.

These include the enclaves around Tala Island which feature pristine sands and azure lagoons that are perfect if you want to take a dip while enjoying the moneyed surroundings.

Amwaj Island
The district of Juffair is sometimes thought of as just another extension of the urban sprawl in Manama, but actually this used to be a completely separate part of Bahrain.

One of the main reasons to come here however is to see how rapidly this city is developing as new towers pop up here every year and you will find some top class eateries as well as a wealth of accommodation options.

It is also the home of American Alley which, as the name suggests, is an expatriate area of Manama famed for its bars and fast food restaurants.

Muharraq
Muharraq dates from the Dilmun Civilization but it was the Greeks that brought real prosperity to this northern city in Bahrain when they began a series of powerhouse trade routes here.

It used to be the capital of Bahrain but nowadays Muharraq is the entry and exit point of Bahrain as it is also the home of Bahrain International Airport.

As well as being the main transport hub however, this city also has its own distinct charm.

This can be found in the traditional souk area where you will find a wealth of cafes with hookah pipes and mint tea, and this is also a great place to pick up some Middle Eastern trinkets.

As an aside, the local football team in Muharraq is reportedly the best in Bahrain.

Hawar Islands
The Hawar Islands sit at the southernmost point of the Bahraini archipelago and are just across the coast from neighboring Qatar.

These islands are uninhabited, although this is mostly due to the fact that this is one of the most arid parts of Bahrain and as such sourcing water is difficult.

One reason to come here however is for the birds as this is the home of the rare and endangered Socotra cormorant which can often be found wandering along the shorelines.

As well as birds, wildlife lovers can also spot the occasional Arabian Oryx.

Isa Town
Isa Town, at first glance, may look like it is simply made up of whitewashed villas and luxury homes.

Scratch below the surface however and you will find an active marketplace full of colorful bazaar stalls selling fabrics and traditional Bahraini handicrafts.

This is also a great spot to pull up a chair at a local cafe and enjoy a glass of mint tea and listen to the locals chatter away.

If you like football, then this is also the home of the colossal Bahrain National Stadium, the largest football venue in the country and it gets very crowded on match days.

Hamad Town
Some of Bahrain’s cities are ancient wonders, while others are more modern, such as Hamad Town which dates from the 1980s.

Located 18 kilometers outside of Manama, it was meant to serve the crowds of commuters working in this already crowded capital city, so with that in mind it is easy to make the trip out here.

The town is famous for its wacky roundabouts that dot the horizon as well as the Bahraini Formula One circuit which is located close by.

Zallaq
Zallaq hugs the western coastline of Bahrain and you will find limpid turquoise lagoons and date palms dotting the shore.

This part of Bahrain is famous for the white sands of Al Jazaer Beach and here you will find a shimmering arc which is also one of the best-loved public beaches in the region.

Water sports are popular here including jet skiing and kite surfing and there are barbecue pits all along the beach.

A’Ali
Located between Isa Town and the western coast of Bahrain is the lovely little backcountry village of A’Ali.

The village is known for being the arts and crafts hub of the region and is particularly famous for its pottery.

One of the best things to do here is to wander down to the local bazaar and explore the ceramic shops while watching the locals work on this stunning craft.

Once you have picked up some souvenirs, make sure to head out of town to the famous Dilmun burial mounds that are located nearby and date back 5,000 years.

Al Jasra
You can keep searching for gorgeous handicrafts at the village of Al Jasra which sits at the crossroads of King Fahd Causeway and the straits of the western coast of Bahrain.

This area is known as one of the heritage heartlands of the region and is a great arts and crafts hub long with A’Ali.

Here you will find weavings, pottery, and other traditional crafts that make great souvenirs or gifts.

After you have finished shopping, another key sight here is the Al Jasra House which was the former summer residence of Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and is known for its glowing coral stonework.

Qal’at Al Bahrain
This UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bahrain pokes it head above the dusty desert dunes to the west of Manama.

Much of the fortress dates from a 6th century citadel that was used by the Portuguese but some of the larger mounds that have been excavated show that the site was occupied as far back as 2,300 BC. If you are a history buff then this is definitely one place in Bahrain not to miss.

Sitra
The island of Sitra sits in the Persian Gulf and is located on the eastern edge of Bahrain.

The island is used by oil companies as well as local fisherman, so it is an interesting place to witness two sides of Bahrain working in unison.

There are agricultural villages here like Al Kharijiya and Mahazza and you can also use this spot as a stepping stone to the Al Dar archipelago which has palm-fringed beaches and little seaside eateries galore.

Saar
Saar is close to Manama but also far enough away to give off a peaceful and less hectic atmosphere.

The area is known for the summer houses of the rich and famous of Bahrain but this is not the only thing of note here.

The area is also known for its delicious cafes and coffee houses as well as a host of fine dining options.

If you are looking for some historical sites, then you will also find these in Saar in the form of early Dilmun settlements which are famous for their metalwork and copper ore artifacts from millennia gone by.

Al Areen
The area of Al Areen is covered in hotels and boutique resorts, but accommodation is not the only thing that it has to offer.

Instead, it is also known for its wildlife reserve which sprawls over seven square kilometers and is nestled in the southwest of Bahrain.

Here you will find a wealth of fauna including Arabian camels, springbok, Nubian gazelles, and Arabian Oryx.

There are also Middle Eastern falconry shows held here regularly.

Lose yourself in labyrinthine Manama Souk in Old Manama
I haven’t ever actually watched Aladdin and I don’t know where he’s meant to be from, but I’m pretty sure I found his cave in Bahrain.

Manama Souq – behind Bab Al Bahrain – is a tight knot of narrow streets and alleyways with traders selling a wealth of goods, from heady spices and perfumes to gold and sheesha bottles.

But it’s impossible to navigate if you’re a tourist. Which is where the terrific Local Ppl guides come in. Founders Zain and Hessa are Bahrain locals and passionate about showing what Bahrain travel has to offer.

They run a handful of tours – one of which covers Manama Souq – which will also include a visit to the spectacular Shrinathji temple. They’ll show you the best spots and also help you out if you want to buy something. Just don’t forget to haggle!

Feed adorable (and strong!) baby camels
I’m really just a humble camel girl at heart. Pictured are two year old babies and they are already big and very strong, almost pulling me off my feet when I was feeding them leaves (main image)!

This was at The Royal Camel Farm in Bahrain, which is not officially advertised as a tourist spot but it’s open to the public every day from 8am to around 5pm and it’s free to enter.

The workers are happy to show the camels owned by the royal family and you can feed these babies too. They’re not sold or bred for eating or production, merely preservation.

The place exists purely for the royal family to preserve the heritage of camel rearing in Bahrain (when cars started to outnumber them as a preferred method of transport), a cultural connection which goes back centuries. But do drop the workers a little tip as they don’t earn much.

Go souvenir crazy at the Bahrain handicrafts center
You can buy some really beautiful items at the arts and crafts centre in the village of Al Jasra. And what’s great is you can watch them being made and see the skill that goes into each item.

There are individual shops showcasing crafts that many of the villages in this Middle Eastern country have historically produced. Such as musical instruments, beautiful cloth, metal work, baskets and pottery.

Don’t miss the music shop where the really lovely owner is a proper showman and will likely play you a tune. I even got to try my hand at the pottery wheel myself, something I’ve wanted to do for ages! Great fun. I feel I might take it up back home.

Close by is Al Jasra House, one of the several historic homes around Bahrain that’s been restored to its original glory. I absolutely loved the architecture, such beautiful arches. It’s constructed from coral stone supported by palm tree trunks. Al Jasra House is also the birthplace of the Late Amir His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

Sweet tooth? Then you’ll love halwa Bahraini
You may well have come across halva before, a dense sweet you find in many a Middle Eastern country. But you’ve unlikely had halwa Bahraini unless you’ve been there. Unlike many Asian countries where halwa is prepared with semolina or flour, the halwa from Bahrain uses corn starch and rapeseed oil.

The end product has a gel like consistency similar to soft nougat and as well as crunchy nuts, you’ll detect cardamom, saffron and nutmeg. Friendly Bahrain locals will offer you some at every possible opportunity, usually served with Arabic coffee.

Most halwa stores in Bahrain bear the name of the Showaiter family, a dynasty that has been synonymous with halwa in Bahrain for over a century. This is the place to try it and buy it. I was even allowed to pop into the factory to see the stuff being made – it takes a lot of skill!

I’ll be honest, I much prefer the solid and brittle versions of halwa you can find in other countries in this part of the world. I found the Bahrain version to be far to sweet (it’s essentially pure sugar) and I wasn’t sold on the texture. But it’s certainly worth trying and if the seriously sweet stuff is your bag, you’ll probably love it.

Marvel at the kaleidoscope of local fresh produce at the Farmers’ Market
Not much can grow in the desert, right? Think again. There are a load of farmers in little Bahrain and they sell their beautiful wares at the island’s gorgeous farmers markets – they are an absolute must visit.

Visit the one in Salmabad, open every day from 8am – 3pm. It’s in a pristine and air conditioned building run by the government to support local farmers. Crammed full of gorgeous colourful produce, it’s perfect for a visit at any time of year and a great place to have breakfast too.

Cook and eat with a lovely Italian chef expat in her Bahrain home
Wonderful Chef Susy Massetti from Milan! As my dad said, he’s never met someone who speaks so passionately about a country they’re not actually from. This lady really loves Bahrain and is Head Chef at high-end restaurant there called Masso. So understandably, she is a mean cook.

She has a beautiful big house with a few ducks and chickens, several dogs and a gorgeous kitchen where she hosts her fabulous cooking classes. She’s effervescent and a real joy to be around. Her classes really are a must for anyone who visits Bahrain, whether you’re skilled in the kitchen or not.

Beach culture in Bahrain comes in the form of Beach Culture itself, a natural water sports centre. None of their activities are motorized, meaning they’re environmentally friendly and work with the elements.

You can go paddle boarding, kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking and even SUP yoga (on a paddle board!). Their certified instructors offer different types of lessons and if you’re already an expert, you can hire out the gear from Beach Culture to go off on your own.

If water sports aren’t your thing, they also offer awesome ‘chill’ beach sessions. We had a little kayak exploration by sunset, followed by an awesome beach BBQ at Nurana Beach.

It’s a great way to round up a group of friends or family, eat some tasty food, listen to some live traditional music and laze about under the stars until the small hours.
