Day Trip to Temburong
Located just a 45-minute boat ride away from the Bumbungan 12/Kianggeh Bandar Jetty, disconnect from the busy fast-paced city life and enjoy a day out by immersing yourself in nature. From a canopy walk adventure at the Ulu-Ulu Temburong National Park to a river tubing experience with Sumbiling Eco Village, there’s plenty for you to do. Alternatively, you could even just sit back, relax, disconnect and just bask in the sounds of the wild at Trandie Resort. There are plenty of day trip packages and operators to choose from to suit your travel needs!

Day trip to Waterfalls
Located 2 hours away, at the very end of Jalan Labi in the Belait District lies the verdurous Teraja jungles. Famed for its scenic beauty and pristine rainforests, Teraja is also known for its beautiful waterfalls (all 40 of them!), wildlife spotting and hiking trails. Make sure to register yourself at the Teraja Longhouse or the Teraja police station before you go into the jungle, and it is highly recommended to hire a trekking guide from the longhouse prior to the start of your trek. There are three waterfalls usually frequented by the public — Teraja, Belulok and Geratung. It would take an entire day to visit all three waterfalls, so be sure to be fully rested for the trek as the challenging terrain requires a whole lot of stamina!

Hiking
Surrounded by pristine jungle, Brunei has many different hiking trails for different levels of endurance and stamina. Enjoy a scenic hike at Tasek Lama Recreational Park in the capital up to Bukit Sarang Helang (Eagle’s Nest Hill) where you can catch treetop glimpses of the vast expanse of Brunei’s jungles, or reward yourself with views of the coast and seaside from the top of the hills of Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreational Park, or for a more exciting day trip, take a 2-hour drive to Labi in the Belait District for a wildlife hike to the Wong Kadir Waterfalls!

Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas
The Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, formerly known as Eco Corridor provides a beautiful course for inline skating, skateboarding or jogging. The 12-hectare riverfront park with its beautifully manicured landscape boasts a 7-kilometre trail to and fro the newly opened RIPAS Bridge and has been flocked by many with their skates for a little cityscape adrenaline adventure. Best time to indulge in this outdoor activity is during sunset, as the park then becomes picturesque with the sun setting at the water village and the golden rays hitting the golden domes of the nearby Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Remember to be mindful of where you skate and be careful not to litter or cause any damage, as local government authorities can impose fines.

ATV Adventure at Katimahar Agripark
30 minutes away from the capital, you can find Katimahar Agripark – a 250 acre park with an offroad track that is sure to give you an experience like no other. You can rent an ATV and get a guided tour which lasts 2 hours, going through muddy trails and a challenging terrain. Make sure you’re dressed appropriately and be prepared to get muddy all over!

Jerudong Park
Brunei’s famous amusement park, and the largest in Borneo – Jerudong Park boasts beautifully landscaped playground with all kinds of amusement rides for all ages. With a kids waterpark and some adrenaline inducing activities, one can enjoy a whole day with the family out in one place. You can also find an outdoor food court to curb all your hunger pangs after an eventful day! Do make sure to check out the entrance fees and operating hours before heading there to avoid disappointment.

Archery
Do you think you can be the next Robin Hood? Try this low impact activity, suitable for both beginners and professionals – you can drop by Ar-Rafi Archery at their centre in Kilanas for some indoor archery, where you can test your accuracy skills and practice hitting a bull’s eye with a bow and arrow!

Kampong Ayer Walking Trail
Seen Kampong Ayer from the water taxis and the river banks? Why not experience Kampong Ayer on foot? Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, take a peaceful stroll along the walking trail and see everyday life in Brunei’s centuries-old water village. The trail is designed to be visitor-friendly so you can explore it with or without a tour guide, and explore the unique homes of the residents. If you’re lucky, you may even get invited in to have a look around! Take a water taxi and asked to get dropped off at the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery (this should only cost about 50 cents per person) and begin your trail from there!

Fishing in Tutong
Fancy fishing for your dinner? Look no further than Pangkalan Waris. Located in Kampong Penapar, this charming little fishing site is a hidden gem in the Tutong District. Fishing enthusiasts normally go to try catch the giant river prawns, or locally known as udang galah – a favourite delicacy of many. It is also a hub for local woodcrafting and fruit picking. It is normally busy over the weekends so it is highly recommended to give them a call prior to visiting to avoid disappointment!

Water Sports and Activities Around Brunei

Snorkeling
A 45-minute boat ride from Serasa Beach, try snorkeling at the beautiful Pelong Rocks! With the right water temperature and visibility, Pelong Rocks has many shallow corals making it an ideal place for a family adventure and to be enjoyed by all. A snorkeling session is usually accompanied by a picnic and barbecue by the beach. WILDLIFE
While trekking along our rainforests, you’ll find that Brunei is no short of its rich diversity of wild creatures. Taking residence across various areas of the country, these critters are inherently shy and especially hard to spot.

Fret not though, as our tour guides know their routines inside out and will lead you to the best places you can spot them.

OUR EXOTIC ANIMAL
The Rhinoceros Hornbill
Due to the strategic location of the Brunei rainforests, it acts as a common stop to a slew of migratory birds, including some incredible ones. One of which is the Rhinoceros Hornbill, an endangered hornbill species that inhabits the vast expanse of Ulu Temburong National Park. Found also in Peradayan Recreational Forest and certain areas of Kuala Balai, the distinctive avian is extraordinarily rare and holds a special place in Sarawakian native cultures – being closely associated with the god of war in Iban legends and folklore.

The Bornean Horned Frog
Known for its intelligence and wit, this small amphibian is endemic and indigenous to the Bornean rainforests. Capable of camouflaging itself using surrounding leaves for protection against predators, the Bornean Horned Frog is also known for its prominent pointed stout which comes in handy for catching prey when hiding in the undergrowth. The long-nosed frog can sometimes be found rummaging the wetlands of Ulu Temburong National Park.

The Proboscis Monkey
One of the most endangered creatures in the world and perhaps the most sought-after primate in Brunei’s wilderness, the Proboscis Monkey is a traveler’s favourite. Native to the island of Borneo, the animal thrives in the tidal lowlands – particularly in the mangroves and swamp forests. With luck, the monkey can often be found munching on fruits and leaves by the river on the way to Ulu Temburong National Park. Many people find the monkey’s odd, bulbous nose to be unattractive, but it is actually used to attract and impress other female Proboscis Monkeys. What a fellow.

The Sunda Clouded Leopard
Let’s be honest, the chances of catching a glimpse of the rare Sunda Clouded Leopard in the wild are pretty slim, even for a native. But that’s what makes it all the more rewarding when you do spot it. Both nocturnal and notoriously elusive, it was only recognized as a unique species of its own back in 2006. Despite its name, the cloud-spotted feline is actually of a separate genus to leopards and other cat species, and is more likely to be a wildcat. Some say it was once spotted in the hilly rainforests of the Belait district, as well as near Sungai Ingei Forest.

The Flying Lizard
Hard to spot even when it’s in your hotel room, the Flying Lizard is another remarkable little creature that resides in the rainforests of Brunei. Best found within Ulu Temburong National Park, these reptiles are most famous for their ability to open their “wings” and take to the skies, inviting you to test your skills of spotting for these covert lizards in the air above.

The Saltwater Crocodile
Found in the backwaters along the coast of Brunei Bay, this mighty reptilian marvel is extremely rare and dangerous. Referred to as ‘buaya katak’ by locals, the Saltwater Crocodile can grow up to 7 metres long in size – making it the world’s longest and largest crocodile species. A sight to behold for sure, but perhaps not the safest one. The fearsome beast is also notorious for leaping out of the water and attacking humans.

FAUNA
Crested Fireback
At first glance, un-experienced bird-watchers might call the Crested Fireback a much smaller-Peacock, they’re technically not wrong. The Swanky forest-pheasant can be bird-spotted around the lowland forests of Borneo and Sumatra, found primarily at the Ulu Temburong National Park, Peradayan Recreational Forest. This medium-sized feathery-friend of ours however is facing a threat from bird-hunting and deforestation.

Grey-headed Fishing Eagle
Can you guess this Eagle’s favourite prey? The Grey-headed Fishing Eagle nests around large pools of water, such as Sungai Seria, and Sungai Tujoh. Though satirically given the nickname ‘Tank Eagle’ due to its long and large wings it uses to dive for fish, it is often confused with the Species of White-bellied Fishing Eagles, which are also excellent fish hunters. The calls of these Predatory-birds tend to be a gargled “awh-awhr” 5 to 6 times in a row.

White-breasted Waterhen
These birds are a common sight, found primarily in and around Brunei, from short grasses to low bushes. The White-breasted Waterhen has long bony-legs which allows it to run when agitated; also when alarmed, the alert-bird makes a frog-like sound that notifies surrounding flocks of predators. The Malays in Brunei have named it “ruak-ruak”, from the noise it makes.

Sun Bear
This fierce behemot is often seen tip-toeing, like a shy ballerina, scrounging a clawful of honey, and occasionally, insects for lunch. The Sun Bear can be heard with a fierce roar in most tropical-rainforests around South-East Asia. However, sights of these short jet-black furry bears are depleting quickly, the global-population of Sun Bears have declined a worrying 30% from constant deforestation and bear-hunting. So do keep in mind that glimpses of Sun Bears can and should be rare.

Bornean Slow Loris
With a distinctive flat-face, round head, and large eyes, like all other species of lorises, the Bornean Slow Loris was recently given its own name and status after a study concluded that the lorises found in Borneo had facial markings not found on other loris families. They prey on insects, fruits, and nectar; but the Bornean Slow-Loris themselves have been a prey to illegal trafficking and loss of habitat.

FLORA
Simpor
Big, bright and beautiful are words that best describe Brunei’s National Flower, the Simpor! Beautifully illustrated on the one-dollar note of Brunei, the Simpor can also be found most commonly alongside rivers, particularly the Temburong River. There are 8 locally known species of Simpor and some species are used to cure wounds and stop bleeding like the Simpor Bini. Resilient in nature with the ability to grow and survive anywhere, the Simpor flower is significant to Brunei as it symbolizes the country’s success and development.

Pitcher Plant
The insect-eating pitcher plant, also adoringly known as ‘monkey cups’ takes root on Brunei soil and can be spotted along jungle tracks, and the highlands of Temburong. But it isn’t the poor plant’s fault for resorting to eating insects or whatever falls into it. The plant’s carnivorous ways are because of nutrient-poor soil. So a plant has got to do whatever it takes to stay alive. Just don’t stick your finger in there or its highly acidic digestive enzymes might just make you its next meal.

Livistona Exigua
A solitary palm that rests on gentle slopes below the forest canopy, it wears an ovoid crown and stands unapologetically fanning it’s leaves adorned with thorns to ward off predators.

Dryobalanops Rappa
A swamp plant usually found at Tasek Merimbun, the species’ name is actually derived from the Iban word ‘kerapa’ which means a shallow swamp and refers to the habitat of the plant.

Temburongia
A genus of bamboo that can be found hugging the banks of the rivers in Temburong, this evergreen perennial flowering plant creates a lush forest foliage.

LOCAL DELICACIES
Carried down from generation to generation, if there’s one thing that has survived the test of time in Brunei, it’s definitely our food and our love for it. Live our culture in the best way possible, through your sense of taste.

Ambuyat
Brunei’s proud national dish. Derived from the interior trunk of the sago palm tree, ambuyat consists of a mix of starchy, solid whites (similar to tapioca starch) and water. Served sticky with a dip called cacah (usually sour and spicy), ambuyat is completely edible without chewing it. In fact, it’s normal to just swallow it; it’s the savoury taste that people yearn for.

Ambuyat is also one of the dishes that has a specific method of consuming it. Using a V-shaped bamboo stick called candas (think chopsticks, except one end is adjoined together), the way you eat it is to twirl some of the sticky texture onto your tips and then dip them in the cacah . It’s a satisfyingly fresh way of eating that you just won’t expect!

Nasi Katok
Nasi means rice and katok literally means knock. The story of how this name came about is that people used to have to knock on the nasi seller’s doors to make an order. Gradually, the name stuck and now we have one of the most beloved dishes of the country.

Though there many variations of the dish spread throughout Brunei, the basic contents remain the same: one serving of rice, one piece of fried chicken and the best part, the sambal (dip). Ultimately, the most remarkable thing about nasi katok has always been that it’s so affordable: at only BND1 per pack!

Kelupis
Essentially rice cakes made from glutinous rice, kelupis is one of Brunei’s all-time favourite snacks wrapped in Nyirikleaf. Traditionally, in the Bisaya culture, they’re served as light refreshments during a wedding or a special occasion. There are many varieties of the kelupis; some served with dried shrimp, some served with anchovies. But on its own, it’s still a sweet delicacy, especially when eaten with peanut or curry dip.

Pulut Panggang
Brunei is also well-known for their pulut panggang, a similar snack which is prepared by having its wrapped contents grilled instead of steamed, like it is done with kelupis. For some of the best tastes of pulut panggang, we recommend stopping by a long-standing Chinese restaurant called Mei Fang in Tutong. Be wary though as they’re so delicious there, they can even run out as early as 8:30 am in the morning!

Bamboo Chicken
Unique to the culinary arts of Borneo, this rich and aromatic dish has long been a secret recipe to the Iban longhouse communities. Now that it’s out in the open, everyone gets to sample a taste of its succulent flavour.

Prepared by stuffing marinated chicken into bamboo poles, onions and other spices are stuffed along with it and wedged shut with bamboo leaves. Next, it’s nestled atop an open fire, and this is where the aroma begins to fill the air as the chicken is slowly cooked to perfection. Pair it with a platter of rice, and you’ve got a signature dish that will forever be a favourite here in Brunei.

Selurut
The Selurut, a dessert of many names! So soft, your teeth practically slides through the steamed rice cake, with a sweet aftertaste left at the tip of your tongue. This traditional yet popular cone-shaped snack, is made with a floury brew of rice and sago, then drenched in salted water with a dash of coconut milk. The concoction is then poured inside a cone-rolled coconut leaf and left to steam.

Penyaram
Have you ever seen a UFO up-close and personal? Well, have you eaten a UFO before? In Brunei, you’ll get that chance. The Penyaram, or also known as Kuih UFO, a creation by the Bruneian Malay and the Bajaus. Take some rice flour, or corn flour, sprinkle in some coconut milk to mold the dough, before throwing it into a pan-full of hot cooking oil for a bite of Brunei’s very own UFO!

Tapai
Fancy a wrap of Bruneian Tapai? A very lengthy process follows in making this traditional Malay snack, but with great effort forms a mouth-watering sweet-sour rice snack. It is made with rolling a mix of Siam rice with “laru” and sugar. Laru (or ragi) is the yeast starter which helps kickstart the fermentation process. The mixture is then wrapped with nipah leaves, kept in a cool place for fermentation, then Voila! You’ve got your hands on a much-loved Bruneian snack.

Kuih Cincin
Fun fact! The word ‘Cincin’ translates to ‘ring’, and why would you ever want to eat a ring? Well in Brunei you will ‘want’ to eat a ring! Made with both red-palm sugar and brown-sugar, and coated with rice flour ready for a deep fry finish. If you haven’t already noticed, in Brunei, everyone loves rice flour!

Keropok Udang
A staple snack for both local dwellers, and foreign holidaymakers, the Keropok Udang is a traditional snack that is shared all across Borneo, including our Kalimantan neighbours. The shape of each Prawn Cracker vary from artisan-to-artisan, but by default, it has a yellowish-white hue. A blend of minced-prawn and starch; garnished with garlic, salt & pepper, and baked under the sun before frying in hot oil to crispy perfection!

RESTAURANTS
Depending on what you might want for a Saturday night dinner, Brunei boasts a fine selection of restaurants offering the most diverse cuisines, ranging from traditional Malay to Chinese and Japanese food.

Might want to book a table in advance during the weekends. These places tend to get real full, real fast.

Excapade
One of the most popular chain restaurants in the country specialising in Japanese cuisine, Excapade Restaurant has several branches in the capital, with an extensive menu that’s sure to satisfy your sushi cravings.

Old Time Kopitiam
Whether you’re in search of a simple, hearty breakfast, or tea with local snacks, Old Time Kopitiam has it all. The place is always bustling with local families in the morning, so if you’re planning to have a meal here to start the day, make sure you get there early!

Gurkha Palace
For a unique and diverse dining experience, don’t forget to stop by Gurkha Palace if you’re visiting Seria in the Belait District, which is known for its Nepalese cuisine. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with the cuisine; the menu has helpful descriptions for each mouth-watering dish!

The Horizons Seafood Restaurant
One of the finest restaurants in the capital, the Horizons Seafood Restaurant is best known for their grand selection of succulent seafood dishes spanning across Asian and Western cuisines while offering guests a breathtaking view of Kampong Ayer (the city’s historic water village) by day, and a beautiful riverside filled with reflections from the city’s skyline by night.

Burgers & Grill
Step back in time at Burgers & Grills, specifically to the 80s, and have yourself a merry time! With its black and white tiles and a jukebox to boot, this retro diner is a sight for sore eyes. Take a bite of their signature burgers like ‘Slap the Bass’ and ‘Notorious BLT’ with a side of golden fries and wash it all down with a sweet ol’ mikshake to complete the ideal meal!

Sapphira Cake House
Plan a tea time feast at family-run restaurant Sapphira Cake House and feast on delectable traditional malay delicacies that are freshly baked every day! Enjoy mouth-watering local cakes like the dual color ‘Kuih Talam’ with a taste of green pandan and coconut cream, the famous layered cake, also known as ‘Kuih Lapis’ and wobbly ‘Kuih Kusoi’ with fresh coconut shavings on top! But cakes aside, the cafe also serves savoury dishes like Nasi Lemak Ayam and Mee Mamak.

Dynasty Restaurant
A welcoming Chinese restaurant located on the ground floor of Centrepoint Hotel, nicely designed in a modern concept and oriental elegance. Dynasty Restaurant is known as one of the best halal Chinese restaurants in Brunei serving an expansive menu of 50 dim sum pieces and Chinese cuisine. The extensive menu focuses on Cantonese fare, but also strays into south-east Asia with the likes of Kway Teow and Fish Fillet with Butter Milk Sauce.

Lao Di Fang
An ode to the kopitiam culture that we hold dearly, Lao Di Fang is decorated with nostalgic ornaments that can really bring a sense of comfort and familiarity. From coke bottles that date back decades to old-fashioned telephones that made every connection more meaningful – the time capsule of a restaurant boasts a wide menu of delicious dishes. Some of their most memorable ones are the grilled chicken wings and an array of classic noodles with a twist like their Penyet Kway Teow!

Amsarra Lebanese & Mediterranean Grill
Specialised in whipping up delicious Lebanese and Mediterranean grills with a touch of local flavor, Amsarra Shawarma is a true delight to visit! And if you come at the right time, you’ll be able to catch their huge Sungkai buffets that happen during Ramadhan each year. With the likes of flavorful hummus and tabouleh as well as persian jeweled rice that come with fresh pomegranates, dried cranberries and sometimes a whole salmon tarator. Now if that doesn’t tickle your tastebuds, we don’t know what will!

CAFÉS
Over the past decade, Bruneians have taken an interest in the coffee culture and the art of brewing sophisticated cup profiles. The café scene may be relatively new here, but you’re bound to discover a few bona fide sips that stay true to the bean in your travels here.

Perfect for a brunch meet up with friends, a lunch do with colleagues and a classy eatery place. Little Audrey’s, despite what the name suggests, brings much more than a little class to the table. With a versatile menu of elegant high-tea choices as well as healthier options that are just as scrumptious.

Tasanee Fast Food
They specialize in one thing and we’re so glad they do because it’s the bomb! Tasanee Fast Food serves a mean plate of Fried Kuey Teow that can satisfy any palate. Their specialty flat rice flour noodles are so tasty and quick, it seems like an effortless process to get it out of the kitchen and onto our tables. But the history behind it is as rich as the highly requested extra sunny side up with runny yolk that comes on top of it. The story goes that the recipe came from Seria in the Kuala Belait District. And this coffeeshop proves that if you’re just serving one dish, serve it well.

Flour & Butter
Albeit small in space, this cafe shows that a little flour and butter can go a long way!
Of heavenly durian cakes and delicious western cuisine with an Asian twist, Flour & Butter knows how to merge creativity with rich flavour! Inspired by the tastes of the world and the internet, like their Mac and Cheese Burger which they got from Buzzfeed, dining here can be an experience like no other. Not only do they serve savoury food, but there’s something for the sweet tooth as well. If you’re an adventurous foodie looking for a memorable dish, you must try their Musang King Durian cake.

High Frequency

With baby blue exterior and big wide windows, it’s like an open invitation for people to visit the High Frequency Lifestyle Cafe. From all-day brunch items like creamy eggs benedict served on crispy brioche and dinner dishes like steak or seafood, this cafe is an all-round delight anytime of the day. And if you’re a coffee lover, then you need to stop by for a cuppa of warm or iced coffee to jumpstart your day.

Collective Wildflower

With faux grass carpet and beautiful illustrations of wildflowers painted on the wall, The Collective Wildflower boasts colorful sights with delicious food and drink. The quaint cafe also doubles as a florist, hence the theme, and is ideal for foodies who want to experience the culinary wild side of things! Albeit a small menu, each item on it was crafted out of imagination and good taste. One must try item on the menu is their line of Superfood Lattes – deliciously healthy, caffeine-free and available in 3 flavours, it’s just the thing to make that Instagram photo pop!

STREET FOOD
More of an eat-and-go kind of person? The street markets of Brunei may just be right up your alley with an incredibly diverse range of tasty street food and flavorful snacks, and a wholesome and hospitable crowd to top the whole experience off.

Pasar Malam
Brunei’s legendary night market right on the outskirts of Gadong, with some dishes being sold for as low as BND1. Thanks to a seemingly endless variety of local snacks and dishes, from grilled meat on skewers, rice topped with chicken and sambal on the side and a whole lot more of Bruneian favourites, this is undoubtedly Brunei’s busiest and most buzzing night stop on any day. Just be ready to handle the smoke from nearby stalls though, as it can get quite hot and hazy at times.

Tamu Kianggeh
Possibly the best place for a quick, affordable breakfast and a casual morning stroll, absorbing the sights and sounds of a thriving market. Located just along the Kianggeh River, Tamu Kianggeh sees daily visitors coming from all over Brunei for their fresh ingredients and homemade delights. But it’s the calm and relaxed atmosphere that they keep coming back for. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can even catch a live cultural performance of the gulingtangan(traditional brass musical instruments) on happenstance, when the hawkers are in a good mood or just looking to drum up some business.

The Box
Newly established and creatively constructed to captivate the attention of basically everyone! With its eclectic array of trending food and drinks and random contraptions here and there, the ambience is hard to resist for more than one Instagrammable photo to encapsulate one’s presence there.

Sumbangsih Mulia Complex
A bustling hub of numerous food stalls under one roof, one is absolutely spoiled for choice at Sumbangsih Mulia Complex! Nestled in the busy Beribi industrial area, the place is akin to a large food court with numerous offerings from local snacks like penyaram and celurut, to more filling dishes like the incredibly affordable nasi katokand soto, noodles cooked in beef broth.

Jerudong Park Food Court
Just across the Jerudong Park Amusement Park is the country’s arguably largest food court! The Jerudong Park Food Court, which is open from early afternoon until midnight, definitely won’t disappoint when it comes to its incredibly delicious offerings. Take a stroll along the many food vendors selling a variety of delicacies, such as satay and an assortment of grilled meats, including chicken tail, known as tongkeng ayam. The food court also offers Malay, Korean, Western and Mexican cuisines to satisfy your palate!

HISTORY
As the world’s oldest reigning monarchy, Brunei is home to centuries of royal heritage, with the current Sultan’s family line dating back over 600 years. Walk through time and discover relics from an ancient shipwreck, take a stroll around the surroundings of a royal tomb, and experience history all over again through numerous exhibits and displays.

Royal Regalia Museum
This museum houses the Sultan’s full royal regalia, as well as exhibits commemorating the Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations of the present monarch’s reign. Visitors are greeted with the very same golden chariot used to bring the Sultan through the city streets during the Silver Jubilee celebration in 1992.

Brunei History Centre
Dedicated to the research, collection, publication and exhibition of Brunei’s history, the centre offers a fascinating look into the nation’s past, including elaborate displays of antique cannons and intricate daggers. There’s also a gallery showcasing treasures unearthed from shipwrecks off Brunei’s coast!

Belait District Museum
The Belait District Museum, the only one outside of the Brunei-Muara District was once the residence of a Deputy British Resident. Built in the 1930s, it still has nearly all of its original structures – an elemental combination of Malay and colonial architecture. The museum displays the history, ethnicity, and even wildlife found in the district.

Sultan Bolkiah Mausoleum
Sultan Bolkiah was widely regarded as the monarch whose reign brought upon Brunei’s ‘Golden Age’ of power and influence. As much as Borneo, the Southern Philippines and Manila came under his rule. The site of the memorial is also scenic, overlooking the Brunei River and surrounded by green nature.

Sultan Sharif Ali Mausoleum
Not too far from the Sultan Bolkiah Mausoleum is the resting place of Brunei’s third Sultan, Sultan Sharif Ali, who added the phrase ‘Darussalam’ to the country’s name. A sense of historical importance is palpable here, and for good reason: this area was the ancient capital of Brunei’s maritime empire.

Batu Tersilah
It might be easy to miss this four-foot tall stone in the shadow of the grand Royal Mausoleum, but that doesn’t diminish the importance the Batu Tersilah has on the country’s history in the least. Constructed due to the request of Brunei’s 14th and 16th Sultans, Sultan Muhyiddin and Sultan Husin Kamaluddin, the names of the country’s rulers, from the first, Sultan Muhammad Shah to the nineteenth monarch, Sultan Tajuddin are carved on the stone. Batu Tersilah can be found outside the Royal Mausoleum and a replica of it can also be found in the Brunei History Centre.

Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum
In 1997, a shipwreck off the coast of Brunei was discovered and unearthed over 13,000 valuable artefacts, giving a peek into the nation’s maritime history and role as a leading trading power. The awe-inspiring skeleton of the vessel can be found in the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum, along with an exhibition on the history of the country’s ancient capital.

CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS
Brunei is a tightly-knit, conservative community filled with warm politeness, evident in the way we speak, dress and carry ourselves. There are also hidden wonders in the vast expanses of the rainforests!

The Community
A phrase that Bruneians are very familiar when it comes to community is ‘gotong-royong’, which essentially means working together. There are regular events for ‘gotong-royong’ to help with the upkeep of community-based places, such as cleaning campaigns for schools, mosques and town halls.

Brunei Arts and Handicraft Training Centre
The centre was established to preserve and revive the traditional arts and handicraft industry, and possesses some of the best examples of the nation’s handicrafts. Don’t miss the chance to view Brunei’s famous brocades, the ‘kain tenunan’, woven with golden and silver threads.

Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery
Located in, you guessed it, Kampong Ayer, this unique gallery, which was opened in 2009, provides a glimpse into the village’s past and focuses on the history, lifestyle and crafts of the Kampong Ayer people.

Malay Technology Museum
This museum offers an in-depth look at the traditional lifestyle of Brunei’s ethnic groups and their ways of old. Showcasing multifarious exhibitions including model houses of the Murut, Kedayan, Dusun and Penan people as well as ancestral weaponry, hunting tools and crafts that are still being practised in Kampong Ayer.

RELIGION AND MIB
According to Chinese historical records, Islam has been present in Brunei since the 10th century, and by the reign of the third monarch, Sultan Sharif Ali, Brunei grew into an Islamic empire. With Islam as the state religion and the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept as the national governing philosophy, Brunei flourished spiritually and through the people’s material well-being.

Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque
A timeless architectural work of art, the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, or fondly known as SOAS mosque to the locals, is the highlight of any visit to the capital. Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
This mosque is definitely a must-see for any traveller, with its colourful mosaic tails and eight-pointed stars, it’s no less grand than the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque! It was built to commemorate the present monarch’s Silver Jubilee, and is surrounded by finely manicured gardens and fountains.

Brunei Arts & Handicraft Training Centre
Built along the banks of the Brunei River, Brunei Arts & Handicrafts Training Centre is a great retreat from the heat of the capital to get a feel of the country’s traditional art. Established mainly to preserve traditional handicrafts and facilitate the training of young Bruneian artisans, many artifacts made by current students and graduates can be viewed or even purchased here in the centre. From hand-woven baskets, brassware and silverware to gorgeous wood carvings, brocades and asymmetrical daggers, take a step back from the modern age and appreciate the fine arts that have carried a country’s heritage for centuries. The centre is located on Jalan Residency – by the river, 600m east of Sungai Kianggeh.

Dermaga Diraja (The Royal Wharf)
More popularly known as the ‘Waterfront’, the Royal Wharf is situated by one of the Brunei River banks and was recently redeveloped into a scenic promenade that now also leads to the Mahkota Jubli Emas Park. This is a perfect place to enjoy those long strolls at night without ever being too far from some of Brunei’s finest eats (check out Kaizen Sushi or The Horizons Seafood Restaurant). One of the best viewing spots of Brunei’s heritage site – Kampong Ayer, a historic water village. If you require additional help navigating Brunei, a Tourist Information Centre is just around the corner too.

The Islamic Calligraphy and Art Study Centre, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah

SPECIAL OCCASSIONS
Each year, Brunei goes through a cycle of long-awaited events that either highlight the nation’s achievements or a traditional pastime, which are then met with a nationwide celebration that is often both quaint and extravagant in nature.

Considered to be some of the best times to visit the country, here’s a list of yearly occasions invigorating Brunei each time it happens.

Brunei’s National / Independence Day
On February 23rd, Brunei celebrates the day the country first gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. And every year, thousands of people would gather in the nation’s capital to pay tribute to this day with coordinated marches and mass performances from all sections of society. If you love fireworks, the celebration often culminates in a grand burst of colours at night as lustrous fireworks take to the skies, delivering a fitting end to a momentous day.

His Majesty the Sultan’s Birthday
The celebration is often followed by two weeks of outdoor food bazaars that line the streets and parking lots of the capital that come with performances of traditional dances and local music. For a city that usually takes a quiet turn in the evenings, it truly is a charming experience that can’t be missed.

Hari Raya AidilFitri (date varies each year)
Hari Raya AidilFitri is an Islamic holiday that’s celebrated by Muslims all over the world. In Brunei, it is our most wholesome holiday of the year and most shops and restaurants will be closed for the first three days of the month-long occurrence, so people get to spend uninterrupted quality time with their families and friends. If you’re considering visiting at this time (first 3 days), bring a fancy modest outfit that covers your arms, shoes that cover your toes and a hijab (for ladies). This is one of the few occasions His Majesty’s grand palace, Istana Nurul Iman, is open to the public and you’ll get to meet members of the Royal Family in person! There’s a long line to get in, but if you’re curious what His Majesty’s palace looks like, this is your chance to get in. Once inside, men will be able to meet and greet male members of the Royal Family, including the Sultan, while women will meet female members of the family, including the Queen.

Harvest Festival
The Harvest Festival is a holiday that is celebrated by various ethnic groups in Brunei such as the Dusun and Murut communities. In Dusun tradition, it’s referred to as Adau Gayoh and it’s celebrated on May 1st every year, where the padi farmer with the most plentiful harvest will host the event – showcasing traditional games such as the Uwod Yompok (spinning top), and symbolic dances such as the Ancayau – along with traditional food and drinks prepared from the rice harvest. In Ibanese culture, the Harvest Festival is referred to as Gawai and is celebrated on June 1st every year. It is during this special time that Ibanese families prepare and serve portions of homemade rice wine to their neighbours and guests, in commemoration of the cultural festival. It is even considered an auspicious sign, if the rice wine prepared by each family could be finished right before the end of Gawai. Recipes for a long, merry night, indeed.

COASTAL BEAUTIES
Known for their picturesque sunsets and scenic shorelines, the sun-kissed beaches of Brunei are definitely a leisurely destination not to be missed in your stay here.

Sporting both smooth sand and clear waters, take a quiet stroll along these beaches or engage in exhilarating watersports; you’re bound to find all sorts of delightful memories here. Off the coasts of Brunei is also a diver’s paradise undiscovered to most, with vast coral reefs domineering the ocean beauty with gorgeous marine life. Whether it’s exploring rich, diverse reefscapes or uncovering treasures from a shipwreck – if you’re an adventurous diver looking to cover some new grounds, chances are you’ll probably find them here.

 

Diving in Brunei
Brunei is famous for some of the best macro diving and wreck diving experiences. The coral reefs are mostly pure and untouched, and you’ll find no shortage of magnificent sea life in your travels here – from leopard shrimps, barracudas and octopuses to lionfishes, moray eels and seahorses; if you’re lucky enough, you might even get to spot a whale shark or a dolphin idly passing by. Scattered between Brunei and the Malaysian island of Labuan, you’ll also find a glorious collection of wrecks, each laced with its own tale and history to tell – including several World War II (WWII) wrecks such as the infamous Aussie wreck. We recommend diving between March and October and if possible, between May and mid-July to make the most out of all these incredible sites.

1) Abana Reef – colourful reef with warm waters and a visibility of up to 20 metres; perfect for beginners or advanced divers
2) Pelong Rocks – massive reef surrounding island with shallow waters, ranging from 1 metre to a maximum of 18 metres
3) Australian Wreck – century-old passenger and cargo ship sunk during WWII with a maximum depth of 34 metres; best suited for advanced divers
4) American Wreck – U.S. WWII minesweeper sunk during a pre-invasion sweep of Brunei Bay in 1945, with a depth of 32 metres; recommended for advanced divers
5) Oil Rig Reef – oil rig jackets designed as an artificial reef, holding numerous types of hard and soft coral with a shallow depth of 19 metres; another ideal spot for beginners

 

DIVER’S DUTY
Brunei is home to some of the most well-kept and unspoilt natural ecosystems, especially here in our underwater backyard. As we exchange cultures and share with you nature’s most pristine treasures, we only ask that you abide to these codes of conduct and courtesy as a fellow diver:

Refrain from touching the corals, if at all possible. (this includes anchoring and stepping on them, as you may introduce bacteria that could destroy the fragile organism)
– Do not collect or bring back pieces of the corals, as well as any live or dead marine life.
– Do not take anything from the seabed, not even a seashell as a creature could have crawled or be living inside.
– Do not litter the sea or leave anything behind as rubbish.
– Ensure all your gauges and equipment are properly secured and not dragging behind you.
– Do not feed the fishes or any other marine creatures. (this may inadvertently cause them to be dependent on humans)

Beaches in Brunei
Brunei’s coastline stretches about 161 kilometres long and with it constantly being swept by a series of rivers and canals, you can never go far without a body of water to chill out by. Most popular beaches are located in the Brunei-Muara district, each offering its own unique set of perks and facilities. The Muara Beach, for instance, is a classic weekend spot filled with picnic amenities, changing rooms and even a children’s playground. For a more personal touch with unspoilt beaches and rolling waves, visitors may enjoy Meragang Beach, along with its magnificent sunset views. Hit these beaches on a weekday and chances are you’ll probably have the sand and water all to yourself.
