The area’s abundant flora and fauna, which make it perfect for ecological tourism, are evident in places like the Los Ocarros Bioparque and the Manacacías River, where you can observe a number of fascinating species, including unusual pink dolphins.

The impressive natural wealth of this region is accompanied hand-in-hand by an equally fascinating cultural tradition cultivated by the “llaneros,” workers who raise cattle and are known for wearing “liquiliquis” (an outfit generally comprised of a button-down shirt and matching pants). These herders tell ghost stories, participate in “coleos” (an event in which the “llaneros” pursue cattle on horseback), and dance the “zapateo” to “joropo” music.

There’s no festival that celebrates “llanero” culture better than the International Joropo Tournament. At the tournament, you’ll have the opportunity to sample authentic “llanero” cuisine, which is comprised of capybara, cachama (a type of fish), hallaca (corn dough filled with a stew of meat and other ingredients like raisins, capers, and olives), guarapo (a traditional Colombian cold drink), and, of course, mamona (a traditional dish using barbequed veal).

As if that weren’t enough, the Eastern Plains, which make up no less than 28% of Colombia, also happen to be home to what is jokingly known as the country’s “ombligo,” or bellybutton. The Obelisco de Puerto López, an obelisk that indicates the country’s exact geographic center, can be visited in the department of Meta.

There are over 126,000 square miles of plains ready for you to explore. Don’t miss out on this magnificent adventure—come enjoy the culture, nature, and incomparable views of the Colombian Eastern Plains.

Villavicencio, home of the llanero tradition
In Villavicencio, capital of the department of Meta, the mountains of the Cordillera Oriental give way to Colombia’s expansive Eastern Plains. This stunning, picture-perfect scene is made even more beautiful as the day draws to a close, the sun sinking over the horizon in a perfect “llanero” sunset.

“Villavo,” as the city is affectionately called, is characterized by llanero folklore and traditions like coleo (an event where small groups of llaneros, Colombian cowboys or herders, pursue cattle on horseback) and joropo music, which uses instruments like harps and maracas to get everyone on their feet and dancing the zapateo.

Don’t miss your chance to sample some famous llanero dishes like mamona (a dish based around veal, which is generally either barbequed or cooked over a fire), gallina criolla (a chicken dish), sancocho de gallina (a type of chicken soup), pan de arroz (rice bread), tungos (different types of filling wrapped in a corn or rice dough), beef or fish pisillo (a dish usually composed of salted meat and hogao, a savory blend of onions, garlic, tomatoes, and other ingredients), cachama (a type of fish), mojarra (bream), hayacas (meat filling wrapped in corn dough and steamed or cooked), and cachapas de maíz tierno (a type of pancake made with corn).

Villavicencio has many different places of interest to tourists that you can enjoy during your stay, like the Parque los Fundadores. This beautiful park, which covers nearly 15 acres of land, is the largest in the city.

In the park’s plaza you’ll find a majestic monument dedicated to the Founders, created by famed artist Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt. The park also has a plaza with local food vendors and foot paths where you can take a stroll or play sports.

There’s also the Parque La Llanura, previously known as Parque Sikuani, which has areas for playing tennis, squash, basketball, and football.

In the city, you’ll also be able to visit the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral, a temple consecrated to the Virgin Mary. This beautiful structure is a popular destination for both tourists and pilgrims.

The Casa de la Cultura Jorge Eliecer Gaitán is another interesting place you can visit. Founded in 1971, it houses a museum dedicated to displaying different cultural pieces from around the city.

During your stay in Villavicencio, you should also make time to visit the Germán Arciniegas Municipal Library. This National Monument is a complex of over 45,200 square feet that includes a main hall for celebrating important events.

In the outskirts of Villavicencio, you’ll find the Mirador Piedra del Amor, an observation site heavily frequented by tourists and hikers who come to enjoy a change of pace. The site offers a peaceful, natural setting and panoramic view of the bustling city below.

Unique experiences
To make your trip to Villavicencio truly memorable, dive into llanero folklore and culture. You can start by attending the International Joropo Tournament, which is held between June and July.

The International Joropo Tournament is an annual event that attracts approximately 500,000 national and international spectators.

Throughout the event’s nearly 50 years of history, it has solidly secured its reputation as the best way to truly experience the llanero way of life.

The International Coleo Convention, which is held each October of each year, also takes place in Villavicencio. Coleo requires great expertise and skill working with livestock and consists of riders on horseback pursuing steers and pulling them, often by their tails, in an effort to tip them over. The convention and the accompanying traditional activities such as joropo music and dancing bring in over 200,000 visitors each year, making this event one of the most significant “cowboy”-style event in the Americas.

Activities you won’t want to miss out on
One of the biggest tourist attractions in Villavicencio is cycle tourism. For that reason, there are many bike paths you can use to explore both the urban and natural areas of Meta’s capital.

To fully appreciate the area’s abundant wildlife, we recommend that you visit the Bioparque Los Ocarros, a zoological park located about 2 miles from Villacencio on the way to Restrepo. The park consists of about 13.5 acres and was named for a type of giant armadillo native to South America.

Los Ocarros is home to about 1,200 animals from 193 different species and displays all of the rich, natural beauty of the Eastern Plains.

You can also participate in cultural tourism in the Parque Las Malocas, which has a fascinating trail you can follow to learn more about the myths and legends of the Plains, like the stories of el Patasola, el Silbón, Florentino and the Devil, la Llorona, Juan Machete, la Bola de Fuego, el Ánima de Santa Helena, and la Madremonte.

And, if you’re interested in learning more about the area’s indigenous communities, you can visit Maloca Maguaré, where the HUITOTOS themselves relate the most relevant aspects of their culture.

Recommendations
Villavicencio has a warm climate, with an average temperature that ranges from about 68 to 109°F. You should bring light clothing; however, the primary source of Villavicencio’s beautiful plant life is its abundant rainfall, so don’t be surprised if you experience some heavy showers.
It’s easiest to reach the city by land, but it can also be reached by air. There are some Airlines that offer flights to Villavicencio, including ADA, Avianca, Easyfly, and Satena.
Villavicencio also has a wide range of accommodations available within and in close proximity to the city, including hotels, ranches, hostels, hosting services, resorts, and camping areas.
If you plan to travel from Villavicencio to more remote areas, we strongly recommend that you verify whether you need to be vaccinated against yellow fever.
With these recommendations, you’re ready to enjoy Villavicencio and its fascinating llanero heritage. Come explore this marvelous destination in the Colombian plains!

The Amazon, a truly unique and majestic place
The longest river in the world preserves a wealth of natural resources and ancient ways of life.

A significant part of Colombia’s rich cultural diversity and impressive natural wealth is rooted in the Amazon. The area is named for the magnificent river that winds through its thick, green jungle, giving life to the area’s unparalleled ecosystem.

The Amazon river, which also passes through Brazil and Peru, is the longest and widest river in the world. Not even the Nile, Yangtze, or Mississippi rivers combined have it beat. This powerful body of water doesn’t just nourish and sustain the land around it—it has helped forge an identity, and a way of being in the world.

The Amazon region is made up of the departments of Amazonas, Putumayo, Caquetá, Guainía, Guaviare, and Vaupés, as well as sections of the departments of Cauca, Meta, and Vichada.

But what does the Amazon have to offer tourists? Without a doubt, it provides a unique, authentic opportunity to experience a virgin territory filled with native communities living off the land and practicing beliefs and rituals still relatively unknown to the western world.

The indigenous communities inhabiting this area include the ticunas, the huitotos, and the yucunas. There is a total of 185 reservations where these communities’ history, traditions, worldviews, and ancient ecological wealth are preserved.

In fact, the Amazon is home to no less than 212 species of mammals and 195 species of reptiles. You can also find many types of birds there and, with a little luck, you might even be able to see peculiar pink dolphins gliding through the water.

Plant life flourishes in the area, which is blessed with a warm, balmy climate with frequent showers. Among the many plants that can be found in the Amazon region are the medicinal plants used in ancient traditions and giant mahogany and cedar trees.

The Amazon’s unique ecosystem has endowed the region with a wealth of natural resources perfect for ecotourism and community-based tourism. You can climb enormous trees, hike through the jungle, ride zip lines, sail the Amazon river, admire the local flora and fauna, or take a trip down the river to remote places in the heart of the jungle.

You can even interact with indigenous communities and try local dishes like mojojoy worms, farina (a dish similar to Cream of Wheat) and freshwater fish.

Come visit the Amazon—dare to explore this land full of natural wealth and ancient wisdom. We’ll see you there!

Unique Experiencies
Life in the Amazon is so different to that of the rest of the world, it can sometime seem like a dream. There is a mystical quality to witnessing the world’s largest lily pad, the Victoria Regia, floating on a lake. Bird watchers travel from across the world to witness the region’s bird species in their natural habitat, in Colombia’s far south, and some visitors opt to ‘float’ from the tops of the rainforest’s highest trees.

Leticia is the capital of the Colombian Amazon. It’s a comfortable and hospitable city that, besides being a busy center of commerce, offers easy access to the dense forest and secluded sites where visitors practice adventure and eco-tourism amid the stunning Amazonian scenery.

Leticia’s tourist dock sits on the imaginary line between Colombia, Brazil and Peru, which means it’s easy to organize trips to interesting places in each of the three countries.

Visitors can purchase handicrafts produced by talented local artisans, sold on the various indigenous reservations and at local fairs. These intricate crafts are marked by their attention to detail and their designs, created with seeds, bark, feathers, hemp, fish scales and other materials gathered deep in the Amazon rainforest.

Can’t miss activities
Witness the world’s biggest water lilies in the Amazon jungle and wander the streets of a village that has no cars. These are just two of the unique and interesting activities that make every trip to the south of Colombia special.

Visitors who want to test themselves have come to the right place. The Amazon is the region to climb thirty-five meter high trees, slide across a canopy for more than eighty meters, spend the night in a Ceiba tree and explore the jungle by the light of the moon. The lungs of the earth is certainly the setting for a unique adventure.

The region’s national natural parks preserve the rainforest and offer some of the best places to admire the Amazon’s flora and fauna. Cahuinari, Río Puré and Amacayacu are three of the most popular protected zones and are great places to hike jungle trails, take boat trips and go bird watching.

Monkey Island and Puerto Nariño are excellent places to visit. Monkey Island is the natural home of thousands of monkeys, and visitors to Puerto Nariño may spot pink dolphins, black alligators and the Victoria Regia in full bloom. This lily pad has been known to reach up to 1.5m in diameter, making it the largest on the planet.

Such is the case with the city’s biggest attraction: the Minor Basilica of Our Lord of the Miracles, which is the fourth oldest in the country.

The basilica, which took 15 years to build and was inaugurated in 1907, has a museum that has become a true pilgrimage center, as it has a profound symbolic meaning that continues to narrate human searches for meaning and encounters with faith.

The basilica is also an architectural jewel in and of itself.
The novelty and tradition of the Andes region
In the Andes region, you’ll find vast cities, charming villages, and a wealth of ecological diversity.

Located in the heart of Colombia, the Andes region is one of the most populated areas of the country. Its geography, water resources, and great cultural and natural wealth will leave you wanting more.

The three branches of the Colombian Andes—the Cordillera Occidental, Cordillera Central, and Cordillera Oriental—are home to valleys, canyons, and plateaus that fill the area to the brim with breathtaking beauty. Among these majestic mountain ranges, you’ll also find a river system composed of the two most important rivers in Colombia: the Magdalena and the Cauca.

In addition to these stunning natural resources, the number of important cities in the Andes region also help set it apart. For example, Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia, is located in this area. With a population of over 7 million, Bogotá is currently one of the most popular places to do business in Latin America. In fact, in 2018 alone, the city registered a 3% growth in its GDP.

The capital is also known for its varied cultural offering and sites of tourist interest, like Monserrate, an enormous hill in the city’s center that houses a 17th century church and shrine, or the Plaza de Bolívar, a square found at the heart of Bogotá’s historic center.

Medellín, another noteworthy Colombian city, is also found in the Andes region. Medellín, which has recently been characterized by rapid social and economic growth, was named “Innovative City of the Year” by The Wall Street Journal in 2012. It has become a captivating tourist destination with over 800,000 visitors in 2018.

Known affectionately as the “City of Eternal Spring,” Medellín brings together regional traditions and culture to charm visitors with one of Colombia’s most important celebrations: The Flower Festival.

Important cities like Bucaramanga, Cúcuta, Manizales, Neiva, and Ibagué are also located in the expansive Andes region, which is the most economically active area of the country.

The Andes region’s diverse ecosystem is another of the area’s attractions. This ecological diversity is reflected in its numerous natural parks such as Los Nevados National Nature Park, El Cocuy National Nature Park, and the Galeras Volcano Wildlife Sanctuary, home to hundreds of plant and animal species.

And if the Andes region’s outstanding selection of cultural, architectural, and natural attractions aren’t enough to ensure your trip will be an absolutely unforgettable experience, just wait till you try the food. Sample delicacies like ajiaco (chicken and potato soup), tamales (seasoned meat wrapped in cornmeal dough and steamed or baked), lechona (stuffed pork), and bandeja paisa (a mixed platter of crispy pork belly, beans, beef, chorizo, plantains, cornmeal cheese bread, and other dishes typical of the Paisa region).

So, come explore the Andes region! Enjoy the blend of flavors and textures of different local dishes. Feel the rhythm of a region that brings together innovation, novelty, and tradition. We’ll see you there!

Bogota
The city where the past and present meet

Bogotá is the capital of and largest city in Colombia. It is a place of convergence for people from all around the country and is therefore diverse and multicultural. Within this city, the past and present come together.

The city is also very green thanks to its parks and the hills that extend along its eastern boundary, dwarfed by their two highest points, Monserrate and Guadalupe. The landscape that the people of Bogotá enjoy daily—the sea of green that makes up the Andes mountain range, rising up in the east—would be nearly impossible to find in any other large city.

But Bogotá also has the colors of modern buildings and authentic colonial roof tiles that are a true historical treasure from the colonial era.

Thanks to this fusion of the past and present, Bogotá is an ideal location with history, entertainment, delicious cuisine, culture, business, and much more.

Bogotá’s location in Colombia or where Bogotá is a simple answer. The capital of Colombia is located in one of the six regions of the country, the Andean Region, which is located throughout the center of the Colombian territory. In the Cundiboyacense plateau and on the savanna that bears its name at an altitude or elevation of 2,600 meters above the sea level.

Bogotá is the melting pot of Colombia. Here, all the cultures from different regions of the country have a place, from the cuisine of the Coffee Triangle to the exhilaration and joy of the Caribbean, or the artisanal heritage of Boyacá and the Valle de Cauca Festival. Bogotá brings together the best of Colombia, and for that reason, it should be at the top your list of places to visit.

The weather or temperature that you can find in Bogota has a lot to do with the strategic location of the capital of Colombia in the territory. Being a city surrounded by mountains, its weather or temperature ranges between 8 and 20 degrees Celsius (46.4 to 68.0 °F.) Autumn clothes are perfect to enjoy the weather in Bogota. Of course, always carry an umbrella with you, since rains are frequent in the capital.
Keep in mind that Bogota has an impressive altitude of 8,530 feet above sea level. This doesn’t usually cause any problems for tourists; however, try to make a habit out of drinking a lot of water, eating well, and resting properly.
To make sure you don’t lose any time, remember that Bogotá is located in the GMT-5 time zone, and doesn’t adjust its time in the spring and fall as many other countries, like Spain and the USA, do.
As far as public transport goes, Bogotá uses an Integrated Public Transport System (SITP for its initials in Spanish). You can plan your trip beforehand using the TransMilenio website and Moovit app, available for iOS and Android.
There are many ways to get to Bogota. Because the capital of Colombia is in the center of the Colombian territory, which is, in turn, the gateway to the South American continent, many flights include a stopover at Bogota’s airport El Dorado. Some of the airlines that arrive to the city are Iberia, Avianca, Air France, Air Canada, Lufthansa, British Airways, and American Airlines. Another way to get to the capital of Colombia if you are on the continent is by bus from countries like Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru.
If you take a taxi, it’s best to order one over the phone or using a mobile app from a known company like Easy Taxi or Taxis Libres. Apps like Beat, Uber, and Cabify are also used in Bogotá, and can help you get around without any complications and make the most of your visit.
With these recommendations, you’ll be ready to enjoy the wonderful capital of Colombia. Bogota, the city with a perfect mix of traditional and modern styles, awaits your discovery in the most welcoming place on Earth.

During your stay, you’ll enjoy a modern city with beautiful architecture where new structures blend in with the well-preserved buildings of the colonial era.

In the capital of North Santander you mustn’t miss a stroll on the boardwalk to enjoy the cooling breeze of the Pamplonita River, and a wander along the broad sidewalks of Avenida Cero.

The boardwalk, also known as the “Paseo de los Próceres” (or the promenade of the founding fathers), is located on the banks of the river, on Avenida Los Libertadores, a place where locals and visitors mingle and enjoy the evenings in the city. Built in 1980, it immediately became the hub of this north-eastern Colombian city, offering a wide variety of restaurant options and an exciting nightlife.

Another must-see is the Clock Tower, which was declared a National Cultural Heritage site in 1982. An interesting fact about the clock tower is that when the hands of the clock strike the hour it chimes to the tune of the Colombian national anthem; this is also a venue for exhibitions and artistic and cultural events.

The Cathedral of San José is also worth a visit. You should also make time to visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Fatima, located between the city’s San Miguel and Loma de Bolívar neighborhoods. The monument is 40 meters high and is one of the city’s main vantage points.
Cúcutan gastronomy is a major draw for all visitors. Some of the most popular dishes include “mute” (corn soup), “hallacas” (tamales), “cabrito” (suckling goat meat), “dulce cortado de leche de cabra” (sweet goat’s milk slices), and “solteritas” (rosette cookies).

Unique experiences

They feature shows by international and local performers and showcase genres from traditional “vallenato” to electronic music. The city also holds processions, beauty pageants, comedy festivals and a host of other activities.

Another important highlight of the year are the Easter passions, celebrated with great fervor in the churches and on the streets of Cúcuta.

Activities you won’t want to miss out on

Another popular attraction in Cúcuta is the open air “Cielo Abierto” Shopping Mall, the largest of its size in Colombia.

Situated in the center of the city, it offers a whole host of options, including big brand department stores, a food hall and a movie theater, all in a pretty setting that blends urban and natural elements and where you can enjoy a pleasant stroll in the warm climes of Cúcuta.

Another awesome activity you really won’t want to miss is an excursion to “Pozo Azul”. This natural pool characterized by its intense blue waters can be found out in the beautiful wilderness of San Cayetano. To get there, you’ll have to walk a beautiful ecological trail from Cúcuta for about an hour and a half until you reach the pool itself.

You should also make it your business to visit Villa del Rosario, a picturesque neighboring district steeped in history. This was the birthplace of Francisco de Paula Santander, a hero of Colombian independence who became the second president of Colombia.

In Villa del Rosario, you can view the house where Santander was born, and also visit the historical complex where the country itself was literally founded.

You’ll also be able to listen, dance, and sing along to the famous “Sanjuanero,” a song that is as much a part of Ibagué as its beautiful scenery.

Another celebration held in Ibagué is the National Colombian Music Festival, created in 1987 as homage to the duet, Garzón and Collazos. The building exhibits colonial baroque architecture and still has its altarpieces carved from wood and covered in gold.

If you leave the historic center of the city, you can also find other attractions, such as the Museo Prehistórico, which has sculptures of dinosaurs and fossils that were found in the area.

There’s also the city’s paleontology museum, the Museo Paleontológico, which has fossils from the Cretaceous period. It has 2,425 pieces in its collections and 441 exhibited pieces. The building that houses these treasures is itself an architectural gem from 1570, during colonial times.

Villa de Leyva also has a fossil museum, the Museo El Fósil, founded in 1977 by the initiative of local farmers after a pliosaur specimen, Kronosaurus boyacensis hampe, was discovered during agricultural work. This specimen is currently the most complete pliosaur fossil ever found in the world.

Lastly, we recommend you take a tour of the desert area to reach the marvelous Pozos Azules (blue pools) which are just a little over a mile from Villa de Leyva.

The Pozos Azules are two man-made pools that, although they are on private property, can be visited for an entry fee.

This location offers an incomparable view, as the greenish-blue of the pools changes depending on the temperature, and serves as a striking contrast against the desert and nature. It is, undoubtedly, one of the places you should visit while you’re in Villa de Leyva.

Unique experiences
Villa de Leyva is an ideal place to visit any time of year because it has so many things to offer. However, it’s always good to jot down a few specific festivals on your calendar that are particularly worth attending.

One of them is the Festival del Árbol (Tree Festival), whose main theme is the protection of the environment. Those dedicated to environmental work and the cultivation and preservation of different types of plants help display and sell a variety of ornamental, exotic, native, and medicinal plants. This event also offers cultural activities.

Two very important events are the Villa Film Festival and the International Independent Film Festival, events dedicated to the art of filmmaking, including screenings, workshops, conferences, and recreational experiences.

There’s also the National Wind and Kite Festival, which is celebrated in August and lets you enjoy the region’s strong winds by flying kites and enjoying shows full of color and creativity.

In December, the Christmas lights in Villa de Leyva offer an incomparable view, and are accompanied by an alternating program that offers painting exhibitions, choirs, and other activities.

Thanks to the favorable conditions of Villa de Leyva’s night sky, the municipality is an exception place for star gazing. In fact, the municipality holds an Astronomy Festival, which give the public an opportunity to admire the stars using telescopes installed in the Plaza Mayor.

Activities you won’t want to miss out on
In addition to all the aforementioned activities, Villa de Leyva offers countless alternatives, such as strolling through town, and letting go of all your cares to enjoy shopping and sampling local cuisines. In fact, the municipality’s different ways of preparing meats like suckling pig and rabbit are very famous.

Villa de Leyva also has many options for hiking and extreme sports enthusiasts, such as rappelling, rappelling down waterfalls, and zip lines.

You should also visit the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, where you’ll find the sacred Lake Iguaque which, according to Muisca mythology, is the cradle of humanity. The Muisca’s mother goddess, Bachué, is fabled to have emerged from the lake, for which reason the Muisca believe that pilgrimage to the sacred lake cleans the soul purifies the spirit.
