Cycling in Cyprus
With perfect weather conditions, varied and challenging terrain and beautiful scenery, it is no wonder that Cyprus is a firm favourite for leisurely and competitive cycling – all year ­round. Enthusiasts love the island’s rugged character, which can go from rocky to clay, and steep to flat, all within the space of 10km. And whilst you will enjoy the feel of the balmy Mediterranean breeze through your hair, unlike other destinations, the island’s wonderful climate lacks strong headwinds… the ideal setting for exploration by bike! Whether venturing out on your own adventure, or following one of the myriad of routes, the roads ahead unfold across scenic urban, rural, mountainous and coastal terrain, with plenty to discover along the way. You will find all manner of sights whilst on two wheels; streams, forests, quaint villages, the natural, the cultural and the historical, and it is easy to end up somewhere delightfully unexpected.

The most popular months for cycling are those of spring, which also welcome high-calibre cycling events, including The Sunshine Cup and The Volkswagen Tour. The courses of the events are designed in a way to suit the abilities of top elite riders, whilst also providing leisure bikers with a fun and testing experience. In the months between, the island is considered to be a first­rate training location, as well as a cyclist’s dream environment just for the sheer love of the sport.

Climbing in Cyprus
Whilst still an emerging destination for climbing sports, Cyprus has all the elements of a great location for climbing, hiking and orienteering, thanks to its favourable weather conditions, stunning rugged backdrops, complex rock types, and the quality, variety and diversity of its climbing routes (both traditional and sport). All the relevant information for climbing sports on the island, along with the calendar of events, and important guidelines can be found on the website of the Cyprus Mountaineering, Climbing and Orienteering Federation of Cyprus (KOMOAA). As the national governing body for the sports in Cyprus, KOMOAA is a member of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC), and the International Mountaineering Climbing Federation (UIAA). Its members include several climbing clubs, along with schools that provide accredited courses, guided group excursions, equipment hire and maps.

Although a sport still in its infancy, orienteering is also a growing activity on the island, thanks to its suitability for the pursuit.
The official organization for orienteering on the island is Orientaction, which promotes the sport under the auspices of KOMOAA. The club organizes several events a year in parks, forested areas and built up areas, mostly in traditional villages, and owns several maps of traditional villages, national forest parks, forests and mountainous regions.

Nature Trails in Cyprus
According to tradition, the best way to really know a place is to walk it. And despite its petite size, the island of Cyprus encapsulates an impressive 10,000 years in its natural environs and diverse landscape that are ripe for exploring and discovering.

With a favourable climate all year round, the great outdoors of the island is easily accessible, and offers a myriad of opportunities to take a journey through nature, history and culture, thanks to the numerous sign­ posted paths and nature trails. A total of 52 designated walking trails have been created to highlight the beautiful landscapes and strong Mediterranean character of the island. By walking them, you can see a treasure trove of varied fauna and flora, as well as the remnants of the island’s mining heritage and other interesting monuments.

Whilst some trails are more challenging than others, they are all a delight for the senses ­ especially in the springtime months, when you can experience the sights, sounds and smells of nature in full bloom, and in all its vibrant glory.

Flora
There are 1908 different plant species, subspecies, varieties, forms and hybrids that have been recorded in Cyprus to date. This number includes native and alien plants (exotic plants that are naturalized), but excludes cultivated plants. There are 142 endemic plants in Cyprus (found exclusively in Cyprus), which comprise the most important part of the island’s flora. Cyprus’ forests are mostly natural woodlands of great biodiversity and major ecological significance. Many of them have been classified as National Forest Parks and protected areas for flora and fauna, covering more than 70 percent of the Natura 2000 network of the island.

The Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia) is the main forest tree found from the coastal area until an altitude of up to 1,200­ – 1,400 metres, whilst the Black pine (Pinus nigra ssp. pallasiana) dominates in the higher reaches of Troodos. In large rivers and the areas surrounding them, the dominant trees are the oriental plane (Platanus orientalis) and the alder (Alnus orientalis), whilst there are other tree species found on the island on a smaller scale, such as the Cyprus cedar (Cedrus brevifolia) and the Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens).

Bush and shrubland also dominate the landscape. In middle and high elevations, the common bush species of golden oak (Quercus alnifolia) can be spotted on its own, in unmixed forests, or together with pines. In the lowlands you will find maquis shrubland, with dominant species the Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), the (wild) olive tree (Olea europaea), the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) and the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), as well as the Calabrian pine. Whilst walking along Cyprus’ nature trails you will encounter some of the many endemic plants that are in danger of extinction ­ most of which have been included in the Berne Convention’s list of protected plants.

Among these are:
– The skilla ­ a species of plant of the Hyacinthaceae family (Scilla morrisii)
– Loch’s Glory­ of­ the­ snow (of Τroodos), (Chionodoxa lochiae)
– Lefkara’s ankle (Astragalus macrocarpus ssp. Lefkarensis)
– Kotschy’s orchid (Οphrys kotschyi)
– The Cyprus tulip (Tulipa cypria)

Fauna
Cyprus also has a wonderful variety of habitats suitable for many species of animal due to the variety of landscapes on the island ­ each with their own particular microclimate and topographical features ­ and the variety of terrains and geological substrates, as well as the diversity of forest and agricultural vegetation.

Among the noteworthy mammals found on the island are:
– The mouflon (Ovis gmelini ophion) ­ a wild sheep species, found only in Cyprus. It is also the largest wild mammal that exists on the island.
– The fox (Vulpes vulpes) ­ Cyprus’ only carnivorous mammal.
– The hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus dorotheae) ­an endemic subspecies and a shy and reclusive animal.
– Bats ­ a remarkable feature of Cypriot fauna, and one of the most peculiar types of mammals, with 19 different species found on the island.

Cyprus’ geographical position makes it one of the most important migratory natural habitats and international birdlife organisations consider it among the most important areas in the world for its biodiversity of birds. It is also a unique location in Europe for endemic birds.

The butterflies of Cyprus, which belong to the order leptidoptera, are also considered of particular interest, with 52 species on the island ­ nine of which are endemic to Cyprus.

Sights of Interest
Aside from the natural bounty you will find on the walking trails, some of the routes have been designed to give visitors the chance to discover Cyprus’ cultural heritage through various monuments that include Byzantine churches (UNESCO World Heritage Sites), Venetian bridges, mosques and other interesting sites.

Degree of Difficulty
All nature trails are divided into three categories of difficulty:
– Category 1: Easy trail, with gentle gradient. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
– Category 2: Average degree of difficulty, suitable for adults with fair­good fitness levels. Sudden changes in gradient (uphill and/or downhill), and/or course along narrow or rough terrain.
– Category 3: High degree of difficulty. Route with difficult terrain such as sudden changes in gradient (uphill and/or downhill), course along particularly rough and/or slippery, and/or narrow and/or steep terrain. Suitable for adults with very good­ to excellent fitness levels. Unsuitable for young children

Birdwatching in Cyprus
Tourists are not the only visitors that ‘flock’ to Cyprus… a variety of feathered friends – both migrating and indigenous – also favour the island, making it a birdwatching (or birding) haven, and of particular significance on a conservation level for both the Mediterranean and Europe.

Thanks to its unique location on the migratory route from Europe, Asia and Africa, Cyprus is a key breeding spot that sees around 250 million birds passing through the island each autumn and spring, including bright pink flamingos in their numbers and wild fowls that frequent the salt lakes of Larnaka (Larnaca) and Akrotiri [Lemesos (Limassol)]. Predatory birds, sea gulls, herns, nightingales, hangbirds, ravens, chickadees and carrion buzzards – amongst others – also soar through in all their flighting glory.

Aside from the salt lakes, the lake of Voroklini in Larnaka is a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive, and a Site of Community Importance (SCI) under the EU Habitats Directive. A total of 190 bird species have been recorded at the site, but it is especially important for two bird species, the Black­winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus (which favours the lake as its nesting site above any other area on the island), and the Spur­winged Plover Vanellus spinosus that nest there. Other migratory birds include herons, flamingos and glossy ibis, as well as the pelican, which is a rare sight at the lake for only a handful of days on its way to Africa.

And all across the island, birdwatchers delight in spotting over 350 indigenous and endemic species ­ in addition to the migrating species ­ and in documenting and sharing their sightings.

Religious Routes in Cyprus
An ethereal and blessed land, Cyprus’s religious roots are both sacred and humbling, as evidenced by the impressive number of monuments of religious devotion that tell the story of the island’s path to Christianity and its deep faith, from inception to the present day. It is no coincidence that Cyprus ­ the island of beauty, where according to Greek myth the goddess Aphrodite was born ­ was chosen as the first place to receive the great message of the new faith on the advent of Christianity. The island became the gateway through which the message of the Gospels spread throughout the length and breadth of the Ecumene. The first mission of the apostles Paul and Barnabas (the latter of Cypriot descent) occurred here in accordance with the will and wish of God: “…being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus” (Acts 12, 4).

This divine ‘choice’ – at the same time an ornament and endowment for the country – is expressed through the many monuments dedicated to prayer and devotion, but also through the plethora of holy men connected with the saintly island, thus endowing it with the expression ‘Cyprus the island of saints’.

A Stroll in Neapolis, Nemesos, Limassol… Lemesos
The Walking Tour (City Route) of ‘A Stroll in Neapolis, Nemesos, Limassol… Lemesos’ is designed to acquaint visitors with one of Lemesos’ most important features – the seafront area known as ‘Molos’ or ‘Embankment’.

Traditionally a meeting point for the locals (Lemesiani), this area was turned into an open-air Sculpture Park, which exhibits works of art by Cypriot, Greek and international artists.

The tour also takes participants past the old port, and Lemesos Castle, which is now a museum on the Medieval history of Cyprus. It continues through the surrounding area – home to interesting stone-built warehouses, many of which have become restaurants and exhibition halls.

The walk then visits the sites of Great Mosque or Kepir Mosque, the Cathedral of Agia Napa, the Municipal Market and the traditional shopping centre of Agiou Andreou – now a quaint, pedestrian area.

Commandaria Wine Route
Take a trip back in time and discover the secrets of the island’s most ancient and famous wine – the sweet dessert wine of Commandaria – that has been praised and world-renowned for centuries.

The route through 14 Commandaria villages goes back to 1192 AD when the knights of St. John were perfecting the production of the world’s first named wine. The sweet wine took its identity from the place it was mainly produced – ‘La Grande Commanderie’ – which is the area now known as Kolossi. So famed was Commandaria that it even won in the first recorded wine tasting competition – the ‘Battle of the Wines’ – which took place in the 13th century, and was held by the French king Philip Augustus.

Indigenous Mavro (red) and Xynisteri (white) grapes are picked late in the season and dried in the sun to intensify their natural sweet flavours, giving the drink its distinctive taste. The dried grapes are then pressed, with the run-off collected and fermented in tanks or huge earthenware jars – much like those used in bygone times.

There are four wineries on this route, and a visit to the region is not complete without stopping by the refurbished wine press of Laneia, which has been maintained throughout the centuries, and serves as a reminder of the land’s glorious winemaking past. A further popular site is also the Medieval Castle of Kolossi – or ‘La Grande Commanderie’ as it was once known.

The villages themselves can all be found at an altitude of 500 to 900 metres. Their vines share the landscape with thick, bushy wild growth and sparse woods, whilst the rich flora and fauna are quite impressive – as are the historic and archaeological monuments of the vicinity. The area is also home to the Kouris Dam, the biggest in Cyprus, and an important wetland.

This historic route passes through: Lemesos (Limassol), Kolossi, Erimi, Monagri, Agios Georgios, Silikou, Doros, Laneia, Trimilkini, Agios Mamas, Kapileio, Zoopigi, Kalo Chorio, Agios Pavlos, Agios Konstantinos, Louvaras, Gerasa and Apsiou.

Discover the old Lefkosia (Nicosia) and its walls
Lefkosia, the only divided capital in the world, is situated practically in the centre of Cyprus and constitutes a rich cultural hub. The history of the city dates back to the Bronze Age. In antiquity and in early Christian times it was known as Ledra. It has been the capital of Cyprus since the Late Byzantine period (11th century). The Lusignans transformed it into a splendid city, with royal palaces and churches. The city centre, the old “Chora”, surrounded by 16th century walls, with museums, old churches and medieval buildings, maintains the leisurely atmosphere of yesteryear.

Krasochoria of Lemesos (Limassol) Wine Route
The Lemesos (Limassol) winemaking villages are renowned for their deep-rooted history of viticulture, as well as their excellent local wines and the stunning scenery of the area that produces them.

Located on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountain range, nowhere else in Cyprus can such a great presence of wineries be found! Collectively, the villages are known as ‘Krasochoria’, which is comprised of the two Greek words for ‘wine’ and ‘villages’ – a name that tells the story of its rich winemaking history in itself.

The route is outstanding; a dry climate combined with a unique geology results in first-rate wines, made mostly from the local grape varieties Xynisteri (white) and Mavro (red), as well as some imported varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Grenache and Syrah among a total of 23 different varieties.

A total of 20 charming, unspoilt villages comprise this route with 16 wineries between them. The villages are well worth visiting, not only for their wineries, but also their traditional architecture, cobblestoned narrow passages and delightful surroundings. They are also home to some of the best-known tavernas on the island.

This scenic route passes through: Lemesos, Kolossi, Erimi (Cyprus Wine Museum), Kantou, Souni-Zanakia, Pano Kivides, Agios Amvrosios, Lofou, Vouni, Koilani, Pera Pedi, Mandria, Kato Platres, Omodos, Vasa, Malia, Arsos, Pachna, Anogyra and Avdimou.

Byzantine Route: 10 Painted Churches of Troodos Religious Route
Discover the island’s deep religious roots and its significance in the history of Christianity as you follow a path that takes in sacred churches and monasteries, all revered and priceless in their evidence of faith, and humbling to behold.

A genuine Byzantine treasure trove is nestled in the mountain range of Troodos, and reveals the island’s religious heritage through Holy buildings that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. With the island situated at crucial crossroads of the Eastern Mediterranean, the land is characterised by one of the greatest concentrations of churches and grandiose monasteries of the former Byzantine Empire.

With 10 of these beautifully painted churches included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, days out can be spent driving through the areas of Pitsilia, Solea and Marathasa to uncover the stories of their origins, which are as fascinating as the structures themselves. Unique steep-pitched timber roofs shelter chunky wooden doors that open up onto an array of vivid icons and frescos depicting saints, Apostles and stories from the Bible in all their colourful glory.

The sequence of churches dedicated to the Holy Cross is particularly significant. They pay tribute to Agia Eleni, Mother of Constantine the Great, who passed through Cyprus when returning from the Holy Land and was integral in paving the path of Christianity on the island.

Diarizos Valley Wine Route (Rural)
Take a fascinating journey along the Diarizos River, through beautifully unspoiled green landscapes dotted with picturesque vineyards, where you will discover the lesser-known wine-producing region of the Diarizos Valley, located east of Pafos (Paphos).

Unassuming in status, but breathtakingly lush, the route passes 14 hilly villages, with an opportunity to visit just two – yet significant – wineries that are placing the area firmly on the island’s wine-producing map.

Situated at a lower altitude than the other main winegrowing areas, the wines produced in the area are remarkable. Climbing upwards, you will come across 18 different types of vines, with the predominant being that of the local Mavro (red) grape variety. This verdant route passes through: Pafos, Acheleia, Kouklia, Nikokleia, Choletria, Stavrokonnou, Kelokedara, Salamiou, Mesana, Arminou, Filousa, Agios Nikolaos, Praitori, Kedares, Agios Georgios, Mamonia and Fasoula.

Antiquity Cultural Route (Rural)
Discover the rich, historical wonders of an island that has seen many visitors through the ages, and bears the unique mark of each of them. As you follow a route of ancient ancestors, the insight and revelations they offer will transport you back to the adventures of bygone eras and heroic times. From the oldest settlements to grand architectural feats, a vast choice of archaeological sites can be explored, with so many paths leading back to the glorious past.

Begin your journey on the east coast with the ancient city of Kition in Larnaka (Larnaca). The site provides the first clear evidence that the Mycenaean Greeks arrived in Larnaka in the 13th century BC, and the Phoenicians in the 9th, and features temples dating back to these times.

Thereafter, head for new heights between Larnaka and Lemesos (Limassol), where the Neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia stands proudly on the hillside, distinctly marked out by cylindrical stone and mud dwellings that lay claim to the earliest permanent human housing on the island. The site is remarkably well-preserved and has been a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.

Further down the southeast coast, the ancient Greco-Roman Kourion stands as one of the island’s top ancient highlights and was an important city-kingdom in antiquity. Its magnificent theatre was built in the 2nd century BC and extended in the 2nd century AD. Today, the theatre has been completely restored and is used for open-air musical and theatrical performances during the summer months, commanding breathtaking views of the surrounding patchwork land and sea.

As you follow the coastline towards Pafos (Paphos), history further comes to life, with the whole town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its world-famous archaeological sites that stretch out from Palaipafos (Kouklia) to the heart of Kato Pafos. Included are ancient villas of stunning mosaics and numerous sites associated to the cult of the Ancient Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty, Aphrodite, whom legend tells was born of sea foam in the region.

Laona – Akamas Wine Route (Akamas region)
Travel through an evocative region of rugged coastlines and charming little villages, abundant with culture and lush vines and possessing a unique character that is both rustic and contemporary.

Situated in the north-western shores of Cyprus, quaint villages and wineries invite you to visit their windswept vineyards, where you will discover the indigenous Xynisteri (white) grape variety that grows in a climate tempered by the sea breeze.

The wines produced here are cool yet solid, with a fine aroma and among the best white wines produced on the island. When it comes to red wine, the region also produces some of the best, thanks to the rare and ancient grape variety of Maratheftiko.

Aside from a visit to four wineries, the area offers a host of traditional tavernas, elevated views, intense natural beauty and the opportunity to visit the stunning Akamas Peninsula.

This rugged route passes through: Pafos (Paphos), Mesogi, Tsada, Stroumbi, Kathikas, Akourdaleia, Pano Arodes, Kato Arodes, Ineia, Drouseia, Polis and Pegeia.

Enjoying a break on a beautiful Mediterranean island with the added benefit of learning English is an idyllic vision… and yet Cyprus combines the two beautifully to offer a sunshine or activity holiday with a quality learning experience. As part of the British Empire for over 80 years, the island has a very high proportion of English speakers, with 80% using English as their second – and fluent – language. The standard of English language schools is also very high with students from all over the world choosing Cyprus for their studies, and many Cypriot educational institutions have a British university affiliation. Another option is the Intensive English course that prepares students for the IELTS exam for the purposes of higher education, immigration and employment, or a Business English course, which is aimed at professionals who make use of English in their work, and who want to increase their fluency and confidence in speaking for social and day-to-day business activities.

Alongside the above, there are also a variety of courses designed for professionals in specific careers who want to increase their knowledge of terminology within their chosen fields, such as English for sports, actors, photographers, and the agrotourism or hotel industries.

Some schools offer the option to choose either a family programme or an individual programme, where students can stay in a hotel, or at a quaint and traditional agrotouristic house in one of the island’s picturesque villages.

High Course Standards
As all schools must be accredited by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, the quality of English language schools is high, as is the calibre of teaching staff, which consist of qualified native English speakers. Moreover the ELSAC oversees the provision of lessons and ensures that all language schools provide tuition of the highest standard.

As a general rule, classes usually start around 09:00, and finish around 13:00. After lunch, schools can arrange activities or field trips in the local area, or all over Cyprus. Depending on the school, weekends can be spent freely, or could include more activities and field trips.

Cyprus has always been a popular holiday destination for families, and children between the ages of 10-17 can also return home with a special ‘souvenir’ – the skill of speaking the English language!

The ELSAC has created special English language courses for one, two and three week durations, which fit in perfectly with a family holiday, or can enjoyed alone for the older age group. Children attend the English lessons from around 9am until 1pm, then have the rest of the day to enjoy the island and all it offers. The residential summer camps are the perfect way to combine a fun-packed trip with the lasting and useful gift of studying English, which in turn will open doors for future prospects in further education, employment or global travel.

Krasochoria of Lemesos (Limassol) Wine Route – Rural
The Lemesos (Limassol) winemaking villages are renowned for their deep-rooted history of viticulture, as well as their excellent local wines and the stunning scenery of the area that produces them.

Located on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountain range, nowhere else in Cyprus can such a great presence of wineries be found! Collectively, the villages are known as ‘Krasochoria’, which is comprised of the two Greek words for ‘wine’ and ‘villages’ – a name that tells the story of its rich winemaking history in itself.

The route is outstanding; a dry climate combined with a unique geology results in first-rate wines, made mostly from the local grape varieties Xynisteri (white) and Mavro (red), as well as some imported varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Grenache and Syrah among a total of 23 different varieties.

A total of 20 charming, unspoilt villages comprise this route with 16 wineries between them. The villages are well worth visiting, not only for their wineries, but also their traditional architecture, cobblestoned narrow passages and delightful surroundings. They are also home to some of the best-known tavernas on the island.

This scenic route passes through: Lemesos, Kolossi, Erimi (Cyprus Wine Museum), Kantou, Souni-Zanakia, Pano Kivides, Agios Amvrosios, Lofou, Vouni, Koilani, Pera Pedi, Mandria, Kato Platres, Omodos, Vasa, Mallia, Arsos, Pachna, Anogyra and Avdimou.

Trooditissa – Foini (Linear) – Lemesos (Limassol) District, Troodos Forest Nature Trail
Points of interest: The route follows a forest road that connects Trooditissa Monastery with the beautiful village of Foini, with exceptional views towards the village along the way. The trail crosses the Trooditissa River and leads you to the route’s main attraction, the Chantara waterfall (eight metres high), then passes by vertical cliffs before the journey ends on the Foini – Agios Dimitrios road, right outside Foini. The entire trail is located within Troodos National Forest Park, which is a Natura 2000 area.

Flora: While hiking you can study (amongst other plants) the indigenous plants: Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia), strawberry tree (Arbutus adrachnae), and the endemic golden oak (Quercus alnifolia).

Local Archaeological Kourion Museum, Episkopi
Kourion Archaeological Museum is housed in a traditional building that was once the private residence of the late George McFadden, Assistant Director of the University of Pennsylvania, who led extensive archaeological research at the ancient city of Kourion and its environs from 1934 -1953.

The museum opened in 1969 and consists of two exhibition halls that showcase finds from the nearby archaeological sites, including red polished ware of the Early Bronze age, pottery and golden jewellery of the Mycenaean era, and a large number of offerings from the nearby Sanctuary of Apollon Hylates.

The skeletal remains of inhabitants of the city who lost their lives in the 4th century earthquakes constitute one of the most impressive exhibits of the museum, and were found in situ in a Roman house.

Machairas Monastery
Located on the slopes of Kionia, in the valley of Machairas mountains, Machairas Monastery is one of the three Royal and Stavropegic of the island and houses the miraculous icon of Panagia (the Virgin Mary) of Machairas, which is attributed to Agios Loukas (Apostle Luke) the Evangelist.

According to tradition, an unknown hermit sneaked the icon into Cyprus during the iconoclasm years (between the 8th and 9th century AD) and kept it in his cave until his death. Blessed with the divine grace, the hermits Ignatios and Neophytos around 1145, discovered the cave – which was obscured by bushes – and were able to reach it by cutting down the undergrowth with a knife given to them by divine hand. As a result, the revealed icon was given the name ‘Machairiotissa’ from the Greek word for ‘knife’ – ‘machairi’. The monastery was built on the same spot, also taking the name.

Today, the renovated vestry basement houses a collection of old books and manuscripts, icons and other religious artefacts.

The brotherhood at the monastery is extremely devout, keeping vows as strict as those of Mount Athos in Greece.

Kourion Archaeological Site
The archaeological remains of Kourion – which was one of the island’s most important city-kingdoms in antiquity – are of the most impressive on the island, and excavations have unearthed many significant finds, which can be viewed at the site.

The city-kingdom was built on the hills of the area, and overlooked and controlled the fertile valley of the river Kouris. According to archaeological finds, evidence suggests that Kourion was associated with the Greek legend of Argos of Peloponnese, and that its inhabitants believed they were descendents of Argean immigrants. The once-flourishing kingdom was eventually destroyed in a severe earthquake in 365 AD.

The magnificent Greco-Roman theatre – the site’s centrepiece – was built in the 2nd century BC and extended in the 2nd century AD. The theatre has been restored, and is now used for open-air musical and theatrical performances – mainly during the summer months – making it one of the most popular settings for high-calibre cultural events.

East of the theatre are the remains of a prominent building, the ‘House of Eustolios’, which was originally a private villa that was turned into a public recreation centre during the Early Christian period.

Whilst the villa was modest in size, it was well equipped and richly adorned. Its remains consist of four panels of beautiful, 5th century mosaic floors in the central room, and a bathing complex that is located on a higher level, accessed by steps, north of the building. A roof structure allows visitors to enjoy the site all year round, and explore its remnants.

The baths themselves originally opened off the central room to the north and east, where there were cold baths (frigidarium). Before each is a shallow foot-bath; while on the west, the remains of the hypocausts – which heated the medium room (tepidarium), and the hot room (caldarium) – can be seen. In the latter, the built-in basins for hot baths have survived, as have the firing chambers, where hot air was carried through the hypocausts, travelling up through specially-cut flues, through the walls, and beneath the terracotta tiles of the floor.

Along with the House of Eustolios, there are further impressive mosaic floors in the ‘House of Achilles’ and the ‘House of the Gladiators’, with the villas named after the scenes depicted on the mosaics.

The remains of the Roman Agora are also visible at the site. The structure dates back to the early 3rd century, with additions made later on, during the Early Christian period. The Roman Agora is built on the remains of an earlier public building, which was in use from the end of the 4th century to the end of Hellenistic period.

The Agora of the city is surrounded by porticos with marble columns on both sides, whilst on its northwest side, is an impressive public bath and a small temple, the Nymphaeum, dedicated to the water nymphs.

An early Christian basilica at the site dates back to the 5th century, with separate baptistery on the external northern side.

The Stadium of Kourion lies 1km to the west, on the right side of the road towards Pafos.

Birthplace of Aphrodite – Petra tou Romiou
Aphrodite’s mythical birthplace ‘Petra tou Romiou’ is an interesting geological formation of huge rocks along one of the most beautiful coastlines on the island, located on the southwest coast of the Pafos (Paphos) district.

According to the legend, the Ancient Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty – Aphrodite – was born of the sea foam here. Legend tells that she rose from the waves and was escorted on a shell to this particular beach.

The giant rock formations, which are seen at the same location are linked with another – more recent – legend which tells that the Byzantine hero Digenis Akritas heaved them there to keep the Saracens Arabs (7th-10th centuries) at bay. The name of Petra tou Romiou (‘rock of the Greek’ in Greek) comes from the hero.

It is said that in certain weather conditions, the waves rise, break and form a column of water that dissolves into a pillar of foam. With imagination, this momentarily looks like an ephemeral, evanescent human shape. Other popular myths tell that swimming around the rock three times will bring various blessings, including eternal youth and beauty, good luck, fertility and true love.

The site is linked to the Aphrodite Cultural Route.

Agia Paraskevi Byzantine Church – Geroskipou village
Located in the village of Geroskipou, this interesting 9th century Byzantine church is a five-domed, three-aisled, barrel-vaulted basilica, making it one of only two such churches on the whole island, and a significant example of Byzantine architecture.

The beautiful interior wall paintings date to various periods, from the 8th-15th centuries. A monochrome reddish cross, painted directly on the stone, is of an earlier type and was revealed during restoration works. This type of cross is usually dated to the Early Christian period, up until the 8th-9th century.

Apart from its frescoes, the church also contains a rather significant portable, double-sided icon, dating to the 15th century. The Virgin Mary is depicted on one side, and the scene of the Crucifixion on the other.

According to tradition, the name Geroskipou (‘sacred garden’ in Greek) derives from the sacred gardens of the Goddess Aphrodite, which were located to the south of the village towards the sea, at the point where the ancient pilgrims began their journey to the sanctuary of Palaipafos (old Pafos). As such, the church may stand on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Aphrodite, although it could also originally have been dedicated to Timios Stavros (the Holy Cross). Today, it is dedicated to the Christian martyr Agia Paraskevi.

3rd Local Route of Pafos (Paphos) – Religious Route
Like in the case of the other routes of Pafos (Paphos), this route also starts from the Palaiochristian Basilica of Chrysopolitissa in Kato Pafos, the church that is connected to Apostolos Pavlos, since in its yard lies the column on which he was tied and whipped.

The Church of Agia Kyriaki, also in Kato Pafos, dates back to the 15th century. Τhe Βyzantine Museum of the Holy Bishopric of Pafos is considered to be one of the richest museums in terms of significant exhibits, and its collection can easily be compared to that of the Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Lefkosia.

The next stop is at the Bishopric and at the Church of Agios Ilarionas, with only the south aisle of the original building salvaged today. The Church of Panagia tis Eleousas in Nata village is a church of large dimensions, which has been under reconstruction in the past years.

The Μonastery of Panagia tou Sinti, in Pentalia is assumed to have been built in 1542. While originally it was autonomous, it later became, under Turkish rule, a glebe of Kykkos Monastery.

The last church of this route is the Church of Agios Nikolaos in Galataria with beautiful frescoes of the first half of the 16th century.

The Pafos (Paphos) Region
An air of romance and history carries through the naturally abundant and culturally rich region of Pafos (Paphos).

Comprised of its old and new towns, rural villages and picturesque resorts, the region is home to some of the most stunning areas of natural beauty on the island, whilst its many archaeological sites are historically invaluable, with Katos Pafos declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a whole.

Centered around the quaint harbour and impressive Medieval Castle, Pafos’ environs then stretch to incorporate the tourist resort of Polis Chrysochous. The pretty and tranquil area – known simply as ‘Polis’ – has expanded to become a sub-district in its own right, and encompasses the beautiful Akamas National Park, Lara beach – which is a breeding site for turtles, and the traditional fishing shelter of Latchi.

Whilst visiting the area, pass by the Baths of Aphrodite, which is located near Polis. Greek mythology tells that the Goddess of Love and Beauty bathed here, and it is one of the enticing sites in the region that trace her story. Her connection with Cyprus begins at the landmark rock formation of Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s Rock/birthplace), where she rose from the waves. From there, make a pilgrimage to her sanctuary at Kouklia.

Further out, the monastery of Agios Neofytos is located in a secluded valley, and was founded by the Cypriot ascetic Saint Neofytos around 1200. The monastery of Panagia Chrysorogiatissa, next to Panagia village, is also significant for its well-preserved buildings dating back to 18th century.

Nestled within Pafos Forest is the breathtaking mountain locality of Cedar Valley. The area is crossed by a country road that unfolds into Stavros tis Psokas, an additional mountain locality that is home to the rare and shy Mouflon (Ovis gmelini ophion).

A myriad of outdoor pursuits can also be enjoyed, further enhanced by religious monuments, wineries and museums, making the Pafos region a haven of nature and culture.

The Lemesos (Limassol) Region
Legends of kings and kingdoms, and the origins of the island’s wine making industry characterise the Lemesos (Limassol) region, which embodies both the ancient and the modern.

Known as the region of wine, celebrations and ancient realms, Lemesos is comprised of its main city – which sits between two important archaeological sites; the ancient city-kingdom of Amathus to the east, and the ancient city-kingdom of Kourion to the west – along with rural areas and charming mountainous villages, where old traditions and crafts are still practised.

Lemesos is the second largest city of Cyprus, the home of the island’s main port, and a bustling holiday resort. From its jewel of a marina and impressive archaeological monuments, to the vast 15 km coastal strip lined with restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and entertainment establishments, the main city is thriving and colourful.

The region also encompasses two unique wetlands. Germasogeia Dam is a peaceful place to relax, take a stroll, or enjoy a spot of angling, whilst Akrotiri Salt Lake is perfect for observing nature and wildlife (especially birds). The environmental significance of the Salt Lake and its surrounding area are showcased at the new installations of Akrotiri Environmental Centre.

The region then trails up the sun-kissed southern slopes of the Troodos mountains, with vineyards forming a pleasant green backdrop to the city. The hillside villages here are known collectively as the ‘Krassochoria’ (or wine villages), and keep their old traditions of viticulture alive, producing the island’s best wines even today, and especially one of the oldest named wines in the world – the sweet dessert wine of Commandaria. Here, visitors will find a tranquil, rural retreat where hiking and cycling can be enjoyed in the unspoilt countryside.

With its viticultural pedigree and a magical history, the region of Lemesos simply sparkles with opportunity from coast to hillside.

Troodos Region
With pine-scented air that feels more invigorating the higher you climb, the Troodos mountain range is the island’s ‘green heart’, and a refreshing oasis that is immersed in endless vistas of forests, valleys and orchards.

Comprised of many different, traditional villages, every twist and turn of the mountain roads leads to something different. The chain of winemaking communities has practiced viticulture for centuries, whilst others are famous for their intricate handmade folk-art, from lace and silverwork to pottery and basket weaving. The Ammochostos (Famagusta) Region
Sparkling, crystal waters and powdery, golden sands are one of the defining features of the region of Ammochostos (Famagusta), with its scenic landscape further dotted by quaint windmills, and its mineral-rich earth growing some of the island’s tastiest, fresh produce.

Weddings Practical
Celebration of Civil Marriages
The contracting of civil marriage in Cyprus has been valid since 1923. As the procedure is simple, many couples from all over the world come to Cyprus in order to get married and combine their wedding with a holiday or honeymoon.

Under the provisions of the Marriage Law 104(I) of 2003, anyone wishing to get married in Cyprus may only apply, in person upon arrival in Cyprus, to the Marriage Officer of the Municipality of their choice, in order to go through certain formalities which are necessary prior to their wedding.

Procedure to be Followed
(a) As a first step, the interested persons – who should be in possession of legal identification (passports and birth certificates) – have to fill in, sign and submit to the Marriage Officer a joint application called ‘Notice of Marriage’ indicating their wish to marry each other, and containing their particulars on the basis of their passport.

(b) At the same time, each of the two parties must make a declaration on oath or affirmation before the Marriage Officer that they know of no impediment or other lawful hindrance to their marriage, and that any necessary consent required for the marriage has been obtained, or that no such consent is required.

(c) The interested persons should also furnish an official certificate indicating that they are not married. If however the Marriage Officer has any doubt as to the accuracy or genuineness of the certificate furnished by the interested persons, or if the interested persons are unable to produce such an official document (eg. British citizens) they will be called upon to make a sworn declaration before the Registrar of a District Court that they are single and have never been married before. However, divorcees have to present the ‘Decree Absolute’ of their dissolved marriage and widows/ers have to present the ‘Certificate of Death’ of their late partner. Furthermore, they both have to make a sworn declaration (affidavit) that they have not married since. For any further clarifications about the certificates that the interested persons have to present, please contact the Marriage Officer of the Municipality at which you choose to be married.

(d) When these formalities have been completed, the marriage must be celebrated within 15 clear days at the earliest, or within three (3) months at the latest, from the date the notice is given. If, for any reason, the marriage is not celebrated within three (3) months, the notice given and all proceedings arising therefrom are considered null and void. Interested persons, in order to have a civil marriage by notice, should stay in Cyprus for about 20 days.  

(e) In urgent cases, however, or if they so wish, the interested persons may apply to the Marriage Officer to fix an earlier date, by paying advance fees. In this case the marriage can be celebrated within 2-3 working days. The formalities prescribed in paragraphs 2(a)(b) and (c) above also apply in this case.  

Persons Under 18 Years of Age
If either party to the intended marriage, not being a widower or a widow, is under 18 years of age, the written consent of the father, or if he is dead or incapable of consenting, of the mother or, if both are dead or incapable of consenting, of the lawful guardian of such party, must be produced to the Marriage Officer on their application.

Penalty for a False Statement
It should be pointed out that any person who willfully makes or inserts any false statement in any declaration, certificate or other document required by Law, is liable to imprisonment.

Religious Ceremony
A civil marriage may be celebrated either by the Marriage Officer, or by a Registered Minister of Religion at his church. In this case all the same procedures should also be followed at the municipality, but the religious ceremony can be held at a church. All necessary arrangements with the Registered Minister and the church should be carried out by the interested persons.

It should be noted that the ministers of any religion or any other denomination must be registered/recorded in a special register (upon their application) kept by the Ministry of Interior.

Certificate of Marriage
The couple is supplied with a certificate of marriage by the Marriage Officer, but if they want to secure one or more certified copies of the certificate they can apply to the Marriage Officer or to the Ministry of Interior. Prescribed fees: €13.67 for each certified copy, which may be subject to change or slight fluctuations.

Copy to be Forwarded to the Embassy
It should also be pointed out that, according to the Law, if either of the parties to the intended marriage is a subject of a foreign country having an Embassy or a Consulate in Cyprus, the Marriage Officer shall forward to the Embassy or the Consulate of such country in Cyprus a certified copy of the certificate of marriage.

INTERESTED PARTIES CAN APPLY FOR ANY FURTHER INFORMATION OR CLARIFICATIONS AT THE MUNICIPALITY OF THEIR CHOICE.

Eléa Estate Golf Club
Located in the Pafos (Paphos) region of Gesroskipou – 8 km from Pafos and its airport – the Eléa Golf Club is part of the prestigious, award-winning Eléa Estate, and is a challenging 18-hole golf course, designed by the legendary British golfer Sir Nick Faldo.

Commanding breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, the par 71 course of 6775 yards (from the black tees) incorporates numerous rugged features of the natural landscape, including endless, rolling countryside, mature carob and olive trees and weathered outcrops of limestone that strikingly contrast with the dark green paspalum grass fairways and semi-rough. A number of holes are fringed by Mediterranean grasses and an abundance of wild herbs and native flora that allow local wildlife to thrive.

Open since 2010, Sir Nick carefully designed the course of the Eléa for each hole to pose a ‘strategic riddle’ for ‘thoughtful’ golf. The course is further supported by the Elea Golf Academy and its PGA Professionals, and features a full-length driving range – complete with target greens and bunkers, a short game practice area, and a stunning putting green that boasts an impressive location overlooking the whole course. The course is walkable, with buggies available to hire.

Amathus Mountain Biking Basic
The route starts from Ancient Amathous and heads towards Moni, passes under the bridge and continues straight to the road leading to Agios Georgios Alamanos. Continue down the dirt road to reach the Governor’s Beach. Take the coastal dirt road to Moni Power Station, turn left and reach the starting point.

Green Bay Diving Site
Location: Protaras
Type of dive site: Rock
Depth: 10 metres
Visibility: 25 metres
Access: By land from a walk-in shore
Qualification Required: Open Water (OW)

Features: There are fragments of ancient amphorae on the seabed, along with a variety of different fish at the famous ‘fish rock’ feeding station, which includes bream, cuttlefish, parrotfish and starfish, as well as octopus.

Interesting Facts: The popular site of Green Bay is considered to be one of the easiest dives on the island and is perfect for beginner divers and snorkelers as a first introduction to the island’s marine life. It has been approved by PADI and other dive associations as a confined water training area for its courses.

Secret Valley Golf Course
Nestled in a scenic valley in Pafos (Paphos), by Petra tou Romiou – the place where legend says Aphrodite, the Ancient Greek Goddess of Love was born – Secret Valley Golf Course offers a stunning setting with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and sheer playability.

Hans-Georg Erhardt and Snorri Vilhjalmsson of Golf & Land Design are the course architects, with Tony Jacklin – four times Ryder Cup Captain and Winner of the British Open and US open – providing his signature for the golf course’s new visage.

With the course carefully laid out in the natural landscape, and with mature vegetation in the lower part of the valley, the setting is distinctly a Cyprus one with a unique Mediterranean feel. Utilising the steep hillside terrain, the course offers spectacular tee locations and long views towards valley and ocean.

Recently rebuilt and opened in 2013, the par 71 course of 5.700 metres unfolds through rolling Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens. It is further supported by an academy that offers tuition from a PGA Professional. The modern practise area boasts 22 covered bays; large putting, chipping, and pitching greens, plus indoor solutions. A floodlight 3-hole loop for evening play is conveniently located at the lowest end of the golf courses, where the beach development links with the golf course.

The elegant clubhouse is decked out in wood and stone with cosy seating areas and fireplace, as well as valley vistas from two balconies and a menu of fine international cuisine at its restaurant. The golf club also boasts a luxury development of villas and apartments – Venus Rock Resort.

Lady Thetis Vessel (Artificial Reef) Diving Site
Location: Lemesos (Limassol)
Type of dive site: Wreck
Depth: 18 metres
Visibility: 15-20 metres
Access: By boat
Qualification Required: Open Water (OW)

Features: The reef attracts large numbers of damselfish and parrotfish as well as local sea bream and groupers. jacks can also be spotted seasonally.

Interesting Facts: The recreational cruise ship Lady Thetis was built in Germany, and was sunk in 2014 as part of the Lemesos Marine Park along with the fishing vessel Costandis.

Akrotiri Peninsula Diving Site
Location: Akrotiri, Lemesos (Limassol) region
Type of dive site: Rock
Depth: 9-20 metres
Visibility: 15-30 metres
Access: By boat
Qualification Required: Open Water (OW)

Features: The area features the Akrotiri Fish Reserve and the dive sites of Shark Coves and Twin Rocks. Collectively, they are home to groupers, moray eels, bream and bass, as well as octopus. You can occasionally spot Green and Loggerhead turtles at Sharks Coves and Twin Rocks, along with the occasional Mediterranean Seal.

Interesting Facts: The visibility of the area’s waters is always excellent, and there are often good currents for drift diving.

Fishing Vessel Costandis (Artificial Reef) Diving Site
Location: Lemesos (Limassol)
Type of dive site: Wreck
Depth: 25 metres
Visibility: 15-20 metres
Access: By boat
Qualification Required: Advanced Open Water

Features: Amongst the varied sea life that can be seen, large numbers of damselfish and parrotfish are most prevalent, along with seasonal jacks and local sea bream and groupers.

Interesting Facts: The bottom trawler Costandis was built in the USSR in 1989 and brought to Cyprus in 1997. It was sunk in 2014 to create an artificial reef with the aim of encouraging the increase of marine life to the area.

Amphitheatre Diving Site
Location: Coral Bay, Pafos (Paphos)
Type of dive site: Shore
Depth: 4-12 metres
Visibility: 20 metres
Access: From the shore just past the headland at Coral Bay, a short walk down the rocks
Qualification Required: Open Water (OW)

Features: There are interesting rock formations, holes, arches and overhangs to explore, and an abundance of marine life that includes groupers, eels, trumpet fish and cuttlefish.

Interesting Facts: The dive takes its name from the natural formation that was cut out of the rock by sea currents, and resembles an amphitheatre in its shape.

Take a stroll to a backdrop of sea and bobbing boats at one of the quaint piers, marinas and harbours…. try your hand at reeling in the ‘catch of the day’ on a fishing trip, or discover the coves and caves of the different coastal areas on a boat trip. Pissouri Beach – Blue Flag
The naturally stunning resort of the greater Lemesos (Limassol) area.

Located 30km west of Lemesos [midway between Lemesos and Pafos (Paphos)], Pissouri Bay is the tourist resort of the village of Pissouri. The coast has seen its popularity soar thanks to its stunning, natural beauty and the resort facilities now found in the area.

The beach has fine, golden sands, multicoloured small pebbles, and its clean waters are relatively calm. Its surroundings are further enhanced by the spectacular white cliffs of Cape Aspro (Cape ‘white’) on either side, making it one of the most picturesque coastlines on the island.

Facilities on the beach include toilets, showers, sun beds, umbrellas, water sports and a beach volleyball court. There are five public footpaths, with two of them offering disabled access.

The west end of the bay leads to the headland of Asprorotsos (‘white rock’) that protrudes from the sea. At its end, there are small, sandy coves. The views from the top are spectacular, whilst you may also get a glimpse of the wild birds that visit the area, including falcons. The beach is often a breeding ground for sea turtles.

The nearby area has a variety of restaurants, cafes, kiosks and shops. The village of Pissouri itself is also worth visiting and retains its charming, traditional character.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October.

Access is easy by foot, bike, bus or car with car-parking facilities available.

Santa Barbara Beach – Blue Flag
A beach that offers snorkelling and ancient history.

Located at the famous coastal resort of Agios Tychonas in the Lemesos (Limassol) district, the beach of Santa Barbara is peaceful and chic.

Comprised of sand with some rocks, the clean seawaters are further enhanced by an artificial reef, with the ancient Amathounta port offering excellent opportunities for snorkelling. There is a scenic footpath that leads westwards, passing the ancient city and the port of Amathounta.

Facilities on the beach include toilets, showers, changing rooms, sun beds and umbrellas. There are a variety of accommodation, restaurants and kiosks in the general area.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October.

Access is easy by foot, bike, bus or car with car-parking available.

Vrysoudia A Beach – Blue Flag
Pafos’ (Paphos’) main, organised coast.

Located in the heart of the tourist area of Kato Pafos – off of the main road of Poseidonos Avenue – the 300-metre long beach of Vrysoudia A is one of the main organised beaches of the area.

The sands are deep, golden and the clean seawaters here are calm and shallow, making it a popular choice for all, including families with children.

Facilities on the beach include toilets, showers, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas, dustbins, recycling bins and water sports. There are also a variety of restaurants, fish taverns, cafes, bars, kiosks, convenience stores and accommodation in the area.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October.

The beach is a great starting point to explore some of the area’s most famous attractions, including the Medieval castle and its picturesque harbour, Pafos mosaics and the archaeological site of Tombs of the Kings.

Access is easy by foot, bike, bus or car, with car-parking available and a bus stop nearby.

Amphitheatre Diving Site
Location: Coral Bay, Pafos (Paphos)

Depth: 4-12 metres

Visibility: 20 metres

Pyla Beach
Located in the Larnaka (Larnaca) district of Pyla, along Dhekelia Road, the beach of Pyla offers a complete day out for all the family, thanks to a host of facilities and the amenities of the surrounding area.

Set amidst an expanse of greenery, the sands are fine grey and the clean waters are calm and shallow, making the beach popular with all, including families with small children.

Facilities include toilets, showers, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas, a children’s playground, beach volleyball and beach tennis courts, beach bars and water sports. Beach tennis tournaments are held on the sands, and beachgoers can watch the regular summer events – and sometimes participate in them. There are also a variety of restaurants, bars, cafes, kiosks, convenience stores and accommodation along Dhekelia Road.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from June – October.

Access is easy by foot, bike, bus or car, with car-parking facilities.

Konnos Beach – Blue Flag
A little piece of island paradise.

Situated 4 km east of the centre of the popular resort of Agia Napa – on the road between Cape Gkreko and Protaras – the 200-metre long beach of Konnos is one of the most picturesque on the island.

The last beach delineating the boundaries between Agia Napa and Paralimni, Konnos is small and idyllic, and covered in fine golden sand. Its calm and crystal clear seawaters are sheltered from heavy winds.

Facilities on the beach include toilets, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas, a beach bar with music, and water sports facilities. There is also a transit point for small boats as the adjacent beaches provide bays for anchoring boats and diving. There are high-end hotels overlooking the beach, and restaurants and convenience stores nearby.

The path towards the beach takes you through pine trees and greenery, whilst the view from the top is truly breathtaking. The beach offers access to all that the National Forest Park – which is on the Natura 2000 network of European protected sites – offers, including hiking and diving.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October.

Vathia Gonia Beach – Blue Flag
Coast of calm seawaters with a lack of winds.

Located 2.2km west of the centre of the popular resort of Agia Napa, the 300-metre long beach of Vathia Gonia is a beautiful coastal stretch that is located 400 metres east of the more crowded Nissi Bay.

As a sandy beach with a natural rocky bay, it is covered in fine, golden sands, and its crystal-clear seawaters are relatively calm. There is a complete lack of headwinds at the beach.

Facilities on the beach include toilets, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas and water sports facilities, whilst there is accommodation and a variety of restaurants located close by. An innovative system (Seatrac) that offers autonomous full access to the sea for the disabled, is installed on the beach.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October.

The coast is separated by a pedestrian path, which links the beach to Agia Napa’s picturesque harbour in one direction, and Makronisos beach in the other, where the Makronissos Tombs (archaeological site) can be found.

Access is easy by foot, bike or car, and there are car-parking facilities.

Agia Thekla Beach – Blue Flag
A beautiful natural beach.

Located 6,5 km west of the centre of the popular resort of Agia Napa, the 300-metre long beach of Agia Thekla is a beautiful coastal stretch that is located within the SPA (special protected area) of the Natura 2000 network.

As a sandy, natural beach, it has a rocky bottom covered in fine, golden sands, and its crystal-clear seawaters are relatively calm.

Facilities on the beach include toilets, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas and water sports facilities, whilst there is a convenience store located close by, and the general area has a variety of restaurants and kiosks.

Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October. The beach offers a special wheelchair at the lifeguard tower to help disabled persons enter the sea with assistance from the lifeguards.

The beach is named after the saint Agia Thekla, to whom the nearby carved temple and the new white church are dedicated. A pedestrian path takes you on a leisurely stroll from the beach either to the picturesque fishing harbour of Potamos tou Liopetriou in one direction, or the beach of Vathia Gonia in the other.

Blessed with the beauty of nature’s best palette, the scenery of Cyprus unfolds across glittering coasts, rolling mountains, fragrant forests and rugged headlands. From the warm shores of the mainland to the unspoiled and cool oasis of the Troodos mountain range, nature lovers, artists, photographers and explorers will all delight in meeting shy creatures, and discovering rare plants that peep out amidst waterfalls, coves, woodland, winding trails and secluded sandy beaches. Exotic and rare forms of wildlife also give Cyprus a special touch. Green and Loggerhead turtles breed on the island’s sandy beaches in summer, while the Mediterranean Seal and dolphins have also been seen swimming in the warm, calm, crystal clear seas of the island.
Botanists and herbalists will equally appreciate the island’s green side, with a large number of local herbs and endemic plants, including the Cyprus orchid, tulip and crocus waiting to be stumbled upon along winding nature trails and paths less travelled.

Lemesos 2 – Ancient Amathous – Governor’s Beach Cycling Route
This excursion is for mountain bike fanatics who will appreciate the technical difficulties involved. Although there are few level changes, the fact that a large part is on rocky ground calls for a good sense of balance and technical skills.

This route starts where the Lemesos-ancient Amathous route ends and goes in the same direction along the old Lemesos-Lefkosia road for 5km until it reaches the Moni flyover. There it turns off onto a dirt road to the right and heads south towards the coast. It goes past a number of industrial units as well as the Moni quarry where it turns left heading east.This part of the route is full of cycling thrills, ending up at Governor’s Beach.

Difficulty rate: Hard and uneven surface.It requires a good quality mountain bike with 24 speeds and front fork suspension.
Road condition: Apart from the first 5km of paved roads, the rest of the route is on an uneven surface.

Main 13 – Stavros tis Psokas – Pyrgos Cycling Route
The route starts at the Stavros tis Psokas forestry station. It climbs a little to the north until it reaches a fork. The right-hand road leads east to Kykkos, while the road to the left heads west to Pomos and Kato Pyrgos. The latter is a winding downhill road, which emerges at the military camp of Agios Georgios above the Turkish enclave of Kokkina. From there the route turns right heading east to reach the coastal road and Pyrgos 6 kilometres later.

Difficulty rate: Quite a easy course. It requires a road bike with at least 18 gears.
Road condition: Good quality paved road throughout.
Route Description: This excursion is another alternative from Stavros tis Psokas instead of going to the village of Panagia and Pafos. This excursion leads to Pyrgos in the Tilliria region.

Aphrodite (Circular) – Pafos (Paphos) District, Akamas Forest Nature Trail (Rural)
Of special interest on this trail are the Loutra tis Afroditis (Baths of Aphrodite), where, according to legend, the Goddess of Love and Beauty used to take her baths. You will also pass by the ruins of Pyrgos tis Rigainas (Queen’s Tower), which are believed to belong to a Medieval monastery. Also noteworthy is a 500­ year­ old oak tree, which is located near the ruins of the tower. Along the trail you can enjoy excellent views of Cape Arnaoutis, Polis Chrysochous and Pafos (Paphos) Forest. There are two non­ potable water fountains along the trail; one near the ruins of Pyrgos tis Rigainas, and another between the Loutra tis Afroditis (Baths of Aphrodite) and Kakoskali. The trail connects with the Adonis trail, whilst at its starting point you can visit the Botanical Gardens of Akamas.

Xyliatos (Circular) – Lefkosia (Nicosia) District, Adelfoi Forest Nature Trail
The trail begins at the overflow of the dam and runs alongside the highest water level point of the dam. It then crosses the artificial bridge over the dam. The uphill trail takes you to the Xyliatos – ­Lagoudera road, which leads you to the starting point if you follow through the dam’s embankment. The trail connects with another 200-metre trail, which starts from the picnic site ‘Fraktis tou Xyliatou’ (Xyliatos Dam) then follows a small section of the Xyliatos – ­Lagoudera road, joining with the circular path at the dam’s embankment. The dam itself is also of interest. A section of the path passes through a pine forest where you will encounter varieties of the golden oak tree, strawberry tree, myrtle, oriental alder and rockrose.

Flora: While hiking you can study the endemic plants: Shrubby knapweed (Ptilostemon chamaepeuce var. cyprius), Purple Rock ­ Cress (Arabis purpurea), ‘Manouthkia’ (Pterocephalus multiflorus subsp. multiflorus – an evergreen small shrub with pale pink flowers), Cyprus skullcap (Scutellaria cypria subsp. elatior), Thyme (Thymus integer), Wild garlic (Allium willeanum).

Avakas Gorge (Linear) – Pafos (Paphos) District, Akamas Forest Nature Trail
The Avakas Gorge Trail is located in the homonymous gorge, within Pegeia state forest with the end of the trail located inside the gorge. It follows the course of the Avgas River, from where the gorge gets its name and resulted from constant erosive activity on the erodible, sloping limestone rocks composed of loams, chalks, reef and grain limestone and bentonitic clays. The gorge is also a Natura 2000 area. The trail firstly follows a dirt road (closed to private vehicles) through an open valley, then takes you into the gorge. In its last section, the trail is in the stream, in which water usually flows throughout the year. The route through the gorge is characterised by thick vegetation and a particularly attractive, shady and moist environment.

Flora: While hiking you can study the indigenous plants: lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus), Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus), thorny broom (Calycotome villosa), common smilax (Smilax aspera), oleander (Nerium oleander), storax (Styrax officinalis), and the endemic endangered Akamas centaury (Centaurea akamantis).

Adonis (Circular) – Pafos (Paphos) District, Akamas Forest Nature Trail
This trail offers beautiful views of Polis Chrysochous, the Pafos (Paphos) Forest and the Akamas peninsula. The path runs past Pyrgos tis Rigainas (Queen’s Tower) and connects with the Smigies trail at Kefalovrysia (where there is a fountain of non­ potable water), and with the Afroditi trail at Pyrgos tis Rigainas. Also noteworthy is the 500 ­year­ old oak tree, which is located near the ruins of the tower. To return full circle, the trail follows the main road that connects the Loutra tis Afroditis (Baths of Aphrodite) with Polis for about 400 metres. At the starting point of the trail you can visit the Botanical Gardens of Akamas.

Flora: While hiking you can study the endemic plants: Cyprus Bosea (Bosea cypria), Shrubby knapweed (Ptilostemon chamaepeuce var. cyprius), Entire – Leaved Horehound (Acanthoprasium integrifolium), Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana var. tenuifolium), Cyprus Golden ­ Drop (Onosma fruticosa), Cyprus sage (Phlomis cypria var. occidentalis).

Athalassa National Forest Park Cycling Route
Located south of Lefkosia (Nicosia), and to the east of the Lefkosia – Lemesos (Limassol) motorway, the Athalassa National Forest Park has a 16km bicycle path that was created at the initiative of the Forestry Department. It is a popular area for locals who go there for exercise and recreation.
