Scattered around the edges of East and West Falkland are many smaller islands, making up the archipelago. Most are home only to flora and fauna with no human presence. Visitors can step ashore on a small number of these amazing little islands.

Each island has its own distinct character with different experiences and wildlife to enjoy. Some feature as part of cruise itineraries, some have accommodation, some welcome both cruise and island-hopping visitors.

Wildlife experiences are second-to-none. Whichever small island you visit you will find some of the best that the Falklands has to offer. From the magnificent black-browed albatross to the tiny Cobb’s wren, tall tussac grass to the delicate Lady’s Slipper, discover endemic and native species in profusion. Sightings are guaranteed, up close and personal!

Cruise passengers begin their small island adventures with a zodiac (inflatable small craft) ride from ship to shore. From the landing point, exhilarating walks lead to wildlife colonies and sometimes a traditional Falkland home with a warm welcome to smoko.

At least one small island should be part of any longer-stay visitor itinerary. A minimum of two nights is recommended, three if time allows. This is where you will truly appreciate a sense of isolation, experiencing that wonderful feeling when you realise that as you are out-and-about you will meet no strangers; in fact it’s quite likely you will meet no-one at all. The only sounds surrounding you are those of wind, waves and wildlife.

Your adventure begins with arrival by Islander aircraft, after which you can relax and let your host take care of everything. You will soon feel like an old friend as you quickly become part of the everyday life of the island. Join in with farming activities, take tours or time-out on your own. This is the essence of the Falkland experience.

Bleaker Island
Bleaker Island, first known as Long Island then became Breaker Island after the large waves that crash on the shores. Situated in the south-east of the Falklands’ archipelago it is not bleak at all and, as there is no land of any great height, the highest point Semaphore Hill is just 27 metres (89 feet), it is very easy to explore.

Bleaker is scenically attractive with a stunning long beach known as Sandy Bay. Most of the birdlife can be found on this beach or close by on the ponds. There is a long list of birds to observe.

Gentoo penguins inhabit the north end of Sandy Bay. Heading south from here to an area called Long Gulch will take you past Magellanic penguins in their burrows, crested and striated caracara, skuas, snowy sheathbills, ruddy-headed geese and the prolific upland geese. Two small ponds and the aptly named Big Pond are home to many water-birds including silvery and white-tufted grebes, speckled and silver teal, Chiloe wigeon and black-necked swans. The keen birder will also be looking carefully for that top spot, the flying steamer duck.

At Long Gulch are rockhopper penguins and rock cormorants. Macaroni penguins sometimes blend in to the colony. Over eight thousand pairs of imperial cormorants breed in the main colony towards the centre of the island.

Look out also for grass wrens, tussac birds, pipits, finches and thrushes. Sooty shearwaters and grey-backed storm petrels also breed here.

The small settlement with its luxurious, eco-friendly accommodation is located roughly in the centre of the island and ideally placed to see the best of the wildlife and beaches, and the accommodation is serviced at Cassard House and Cobb’s Cottage.

The island is an organic sustainably managed farm, mainly sheep with a small number of cattle. These domestic animals live happily alongside the wildlife and the cattle provide tasty, locally-sourced steaks.

Carcass Island
Carcass Island is a true gem, situated in the north-west of the Falklands. Named after a ship, HMS Carcass, the island is perfectly sized for exploration with rocky ridges and steep hills to tempt the intrepid walker, gentle slopes and stunning beaches for those who prefer a sociable stroll.

Carcass Island has been a sheep farm for more than a century but, due to careful management, it is rich in wildlife with songbirds, waterfowl, penguins and elephant seals. Sea lions and dolphins are often seen. Fur seals can occasionally be found in the tall tussac grass.

Keep a wary eye on your belongings as the striated caracara, known locally as Johnny Rook, comes to investigate. Birds are amazingly tame. Southern caracara perch around the settlement, the endemic Cobb’s wren is easy to spot hopping along the shore, long-tailed meadowlarks regale you with song and the tussac bird will definitely find you. Penguins are here too, Magellanic burrows are close the settlement and gentoo are further afield.

The tiny settlement nestles into a sheltered harbour with breath-taking views to the glistening blues of the sea and the soft chalky-white outcrops of the Needles. Carcass Island House is a guest house providing homely accommodation and the chance to help out with a range of farm tasks if you choose.

Great walks from the settlement are in all directions. Choose from a quick but strenuous hike up nearby Stanley Hill or a longer ramble to the lovely Leopard Beach. Mount Byng is the highest point at 213 metres (700 feet) and has fantastic views. Continue to Elephant Flats to find the elephant seals.

Cruise visitors can also gain a taste of Carcass Island which features on many itineraries. Landings are usually a short walk away from the settlement to allow a scenic walk, taking in much of the birdlife and finishing with a tasty smoko at the farmhouse.

George & Barren Islands
This group of islands lie at the southern entrance to Falkland Sound, the channel of water dividing East and West Falkland. The land is low-lying with several ponds and many sheltered, sandy coves. Walking on each of the islands is easy due to the flat terrain. Around forty two species of birds can be seen in thee islands along with marine mammals.

Barren Island supports a large colony of juvenile sea lions and easily accessible sites to view southern giant petrels. It is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers with visitors able to tick off around thirty two species of birds, elephant seals, and sea lions on a 3 km walk. Helicopter visits to Barren Island can be organised for Mount Pleasant personnel and the island features on some cruise itineraries.

George Island is much larger than Barren but home to most of the same species of birds and colonies of juvenile sea lions. The colony at Speedwell Pass generally has over one hundred and fifty pups each year, always keen to pose for cameras. Several tussac plantations are being developed for conservation, environmental and agricultural purposes. It also appears on cruise itineraries.

Speedwell is the largest of the three islands and is the main home of the family who own and manage this island group. The owners consider themselves nomadic as they farm across all three islands and each has to be worked individually. Over five thousand sheep are bred for wool and meat along with around seventy cattle. Transport between islands is a small (12m) steel boat. Every island has a house and shearing facilities so the family can reside and work in each location as needed. Speedwell also has a range of birds with sea lions and elephant seals dotted along the coastline.

Jason Islands
The Jason Islands are located in the extreme north-west of the Falklands’ archipelago, towards Patagonia. This small group of islands, named after the survey vessel HMS Jason, forms a rocky-ridged chain with some of the most breathtaking scenery and wildlife you can imagine. Names include “Steeple”, “Grand”, “Elephant” and “Flat”, conjuring alluring and romantic images.

Unfortunately the Jasons are not easy to reach. The Falkland Island Government Air Service does not land on any of the islands and permission is needed to visit. But some small cruise vessels do offer a landing on Steeple Jason. The trip is an unforgettable experience.

Steeple Jason rises steeply from the shore to a series of dramatic rocky peaks, the highest at 290m (952 feet), with an isthmus separating two main areas of land. The island is a haven for bird lovers.

Here you will find the world’s largest colony of black-browed albatross, beautiful birds who soar gracefully on the sea breezes, occasionally performing a clumsy landing onshore. Amongst the albatross are rockhopper penguins and king cormorants.

Striated caracaras nest nearby along with skuas, both aggressive in the breeding season. Simply enjoy watching these fascinating, inquisitive birds from a suitable distance. They may even come to you! Similarly, respect the breeding areas of southern giant petrels, the largest of all petrels. These magnificent birds also fly elegantly along the shoreline but are quick to leave nests if disturbed, exposing their young to the predatory caracaras and skuas. Gentoo penguins breed on the island along with many small bird species.

It’s likely that the large numbers of birds here were noticed by early explorers who saw the penguins as an excellent source of oil. A few remnants of these dark days, such as large rusting trypots, can be found in the sheltered harbours. Today, these practices are long-gone and the island is an uninhabited nature reserve, a birding paradise.

Kidney Island
Kidney Island is a tiny island, just 16 km (10 miles) from Stanley. It is named for its roughly kidney-shaped outline and is a National Nature Reserve. The island can only be reached by boat and is just 30 minutes away from the Islands’ capital, Stanley. Visit is by permit only with a guide, so Kidney Island is a very special experience.

Landing is on a small, white sand and boulder beach on the south-west side of the island. A zodiac (inflatable boat) transfers you from your vessel. Sea lions are frequently in the water or basking on the shore. Look out for the Cobb’s wren, tussac birds and dark-faced ground tyrants which hop amongst the rocks.

Most of the 32 hectares (80 acres) of the island is covered with tall, dense tussac grass. Walking through the grass requires patience and care as it is quite likely that animals will be present. There is a small hut on the island, preserved for historic interest, which was constructed for people from Stanley who came to gather winter fodder for their animals.

Rockhopper penguins inhabit the steep cliffs of the northern coast. These feisty birds pay scant attention to humans but it is still important to keep a respectful distance as you approach through the tussac grass. Magellanic penguins have their burrows across many parts of the island and their distinctive braying sounds are heard en-route.

One of the highlights of Kidney Island comes at the end of the day as large numbers of burrowing seabirds return to the island. Up to 100,000 pairs of sooty shearwaters breed here every year. Their nests are in the west of the island and their evening home-coming is a sight to behold.

Great shearwaters, grey-backed storm petrels and white-chinned petrels also nest on the island.

New Island
Ruggedly beautiful and remote, New Island is located at the extreme west of the Falklands’ archipelago. Dramatic cliffs contrast with sheltered sandy bays and natural harbours. New Island has a large concentration and great diversity of wildlife. It is also one of the driest places with an annual rainfall of less than 40cms (16”).

The pretty settlement overlooks Coffin’s Harbour, possibly named after a whaling captain. One of the earliest residents of the island was Captain Charles H Barnard of the whaler “Nanina”. He was stranded here with four crew members for around eighteen months in 1813/14. The remnants of their rough stone shelter can still be seen.

The remains of the first and only land-based whaling station in the Falklands are in South Harbour. The station closed in 1916 as operations were relocated to South Georgia where whale catches were larger. Of course, no sealing or whaling activities are practised in the Islands today.

Some of the best wildlife experiences are just a short distance from the settlement. At Settlement Rookery, formidable sea cliffs are home to black-browed albatross, king cormorants and rockhopper penguins creating an amazing cacophony of sounds. Great views are easy to find and time drifts away effortlessly whilst watching the rockhoppers landing in the surf and scaling the rocky heights before them and the albatross soar along the coastline.

Over forty species of birds breed on New Island including four species of penguin. Thin-billed prions are a highlight along with skuas, striated caracara and peregrine falcons.

Marine mammals are also plentiful. Peale’s dolphins breed in inshore waters, sea lions are often observed and fur seal colonies are found around the island.

Some cruise itineraries include New Island. Visitors are assured of a warm welcome from the Island’s two human residents and a great wildlife watching experience.

Self-catering accommodation is available on the island itself. At present this is limited, but they plan to expand the accommodation available in the next few years. The Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) fly to New Island, although the size of the airstrip currently limits the number of passengers per aircraft to two, plus luggage, and weather conditions can sometimes prevent landings for several days at a time.

Pebble Island
Pebble Island is named simply after the unusual, translucent semi-precious pebbles found on some of the beaches. Located in the north-west of the Falklands’ group, Pebble has something to offer visitors with a range of interests including a huge variety of birdlife, great hiking opportunities and fascinating war history.

Spectacular Elephant Beach is the longest beach in the Falklands at 6.4km (4 miles) long. This lovely stretch of white sand is used occasionally as the airstrip.

The eastern end of the island is heathland with low cliffs and a large number of ponds. These are home to waterfowl and wading-birds including one of the largest concentrations of black-necked swans and occasional sightings of red shoveler and cinnamon teal. Black-crowned night-herons, imperial cormorants, rockhopper, gentoo and Magellanic penguins inhabit the coast. Peregrine falcons have been recorded. The Falkland fritillary butterfly occurs the heathlands whilst sea lions are found on Cape Tamar.

The western end is hilly, with three main peaks. First Mountain is the highest at 277 metres (909 feet), Middle Peak is 214 metres (704 feet) and Marble Mountain 237 metres (779 feet). This small chain makes an excellent walking route, in one or both directions depending on your level of fitness and how much you want to take in.

To the north of the hills is a beautiful coastline with four species of penguin. Macaroni penguins can be found amongst the rockhoppers. Gentoo and Magellanic penguins are here, along with southern giant petrels. Commerson’s dolphins are regular visitors to the shore.

A SAS raid took place on Pebble Island in 1982 to attack an Argentine airfield. This is commemorated by a small cairn. Memorials are also here for the HMS Coventry and an Argentine Learjet hit by a missile.

Pebble Island Lodge is a renovated farmhouse and provides comfortable accommodation in the settlement, conveniently situated at the centre of the island, while The Nest offers self-catering.

Saunders Island
Saunders Island in the north-west of the archipelago is the place to find some of the most iconic vistas of the Falkland Islands. Dramatic sweeping shorelines characterise the second largest of the offshore islands, named after a British Admiral.

The isthmus of the Neck is flanked on both sides with sandy beaches. The long stretch of white sand to the north is irresistible. The whole area is crowded with birds. Magellanic penguins make their way ashore, gentoos congregate and there is a small colony of king penguins.

Saunders Island is one of the few places where visitors can see black-browed albatross. The bird is graceful in flight, but amusingly clumsy in landing. Nests are small stacks, somewhat precariously balanced on the cliffs, with fluffy grey chicks, once hatched, atop waiting patiently for food. It’s easy to while away an hour on more just watching the activity.

Close by are rockhopper penguins and another birdwatching treat awaits. Along the coast is the “rockhopper shower” where the birds wait for their turn under the refreshing falling stream. Imperial cormorants breed noisily alongside.

The striated caracara is always on the look-out for a meal of any sort. Take care of your packed lunch! Also around the island you’ll find water-birds and endemic plants. There are many walking opportunities with the highest point, Mount Richards 457 metres (1,462 feet) providing great views across this unusually shaped island.

Accommodation is available at three locations, The Stonehouse and The R&R House in the main settlement, The Rookery and The Neck, and guests may opt for full board service or stay on a self-catering basis.

The ruins of the first British settlement are at Port Egmont, a short walk away from the main settlement. A plaque marks the spot and a flag can be raised in commemoration.

Sea Lion Island
Sea Lion Island is truly a natural paradise. Located in the south-east of the Falklands’ group, this beautiful island has no steep hills to climb but does have high, rocky cliffs and spectacular wildlife. On lower lying land, white sand beaches and large areas of tall, tussac grass create alternative habitats and sheltered areas.

As its name suggests, Sea Lion Island is home to magnificent sea lions. Generally seen at the foot of the cliffs or swimming offshore, these beautiful creatures can occasionally catch visitors unaware in the sheltered coves on the east of the island but pose no threat if treated with respect and care.

Sea Lion Island has the largest colony of the world’s largest pinniped, the elephant seal, with almost two thousand individuals at the height of the breeding season in October. These huge animals bask lazily on the beach, idly flipping sand, making grunting noises and occasionally opening an eye. Periodically the peace is shattered as males rear up for a fight!

This is one of the best places to look for orcas which roam offshore, hopeful for prey, throughout the summer. Their best chances for sea lion pups are from mid-November to the end of December!

Sea Lion Lodge is the only accommodation on the island and perfectly situated for wildlife observation with the elephant seals close by. Closer still are Magellanic penguins whose gentle braying sounds will lull you to sleep. Gentoos are nearby and southern giant petrels just a little further.

On the south coast is the HMS Sheffield memorial. Rockhopper penguins and imperial cormorants live side-by-side and striated caracaras enjoy the same area.

The island is no longer farmed so native vegetation predominates. Birders will find many species of interest including Cobb’s wren and Magellanic snipe. This is most definitely an island where nature is still in charge.

Weddell Island
Weddell Island, named after a British explorer, is the largest of the so-called “small” islands of the Falklands so there is plenty of land to explore. From open plains to hills, sandy beaches to rocky coves, there is a great diversity of scenery and a range of wildlife to see.

The only settlement is home to just two human occupants so you will make a significant increase to the population on your arrival. This is the perfect location to really get away from it all, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Take a 4×4 ride or a ramble over gently undulating land to Loop Head, in the north-east corner of the island, to discover sealions amongst the tussac grass, along with cormorants, gentoo and Magellanic penguins. On the way, you’ll see various native plants and may wish to sample a few of the collectable varieties to supplement your supper! Weddell Island has many endemic plants including the lovely Lady’s Slipper and Vanilla Daisies. The route includes interesting old, shepherds’ shanties and a wide range of birds. Look out for albatross, petrel, caracaras and hawks.

You may also spot an unusual Falkland resident, the Patagonian grey fox. Introduced to the island by a previous owner John Hamilton, these animals cause some controversy but nevertheless make an interesting photographic subject and a contrast to the native species.

Walking is an excellent way to get around, from simply exploring the settlement or venturing further afield. Mark Point is close to the settlement with sandy beaches, whale skeletons and a colony of gentoo penguins. Dolphins frequently swim offshore.

Weddell mountain, 383 metres (1,256 feet) offers the opportunity for an invigorating hike. At the summit is a “standing man”, a cairn built from stones to which you can add your contribution whilst admiring the lovely views.

West Point Island
West Point Island is situated off the north-west tip of West Falkland. It was initially named Albatross Island due to the thousands of nesting black-browed albatross. The island is separated from the mainland by a channel with the enchanting name of the “Woolly Gut”. Privately owned by Roddy Napier, West Point has been in the hands of his family since 1879.

West Point Island has spectacular scenery and impressive wildlife. The “Devil’s Nose” is a rocky promontory with dramatic sandstone cliffs, where rocky ledges and areas of tussac grass are home to black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins. While away your time watching the antics of both birds as the albatross soar gracefully overhead and rockhoppers squabble with neighbours or simply enjoy basking in the sun. Look carefully, you may spot something special in the crowd, such as a macaroni penguin. Whales, fur seals and sea lions are frequently observed in the waters below.

The “Devil’s Nose” is a relatively easy 2 kilometre walk from the settlement, across open, rolling countryside with wonderful scenery. If time permits, keen hikers can enjoy the walk and view from Cliff Mountain. At 381 metres (1,211 feet) this is not only the Island’s highest point but also the highest cliffs in the Falklands.

An attractive settlement is nestled into a sheltered harbour with a lovely white sand beach close by. Dolphins often visit the bay, particularly when a boat arrives. Magellanic penguins have made their burrows in the harbour area and various other birds can be seen including striated caracaras and turkey vultures. Fantastically sheltered flower and vegetable gardens are situated near the farm buildings.

Access to West Point Island is available on a day trip by boat from Carcass Island and the destination also features on many cruise itineraries. A highlight for the latter is the delicious smoko offered in the farmhouse, which dates back to 1880.

East Falkland is home to the Islands’ capital, Stanley, as well as many other interesting settlements and lots of lovely areas of coastline. Some places are easy day trips from Stanley but many are worth a longer stop-over to allow more time for exploration.

Many settlements on East Falkland have established accommodation, from remote cottages to well-provisioned lodges. Itineraries can be easily designed to include as many nights as you may need to enjoy an area that appeals to you.

East Falkland can be broadly divided into two areas separated by an isthmus. Each area is distinctly different; each has a range of attractions and activities.

“Camp” is the word used to describe all the land outside Stanley, from the Spanish word for countryside “campos”. It’s a word that visitors will often hear and helps to understand both the geography and some social aspects of the Islands.

The “North Camp” is a scenic, hilly area, characterised by beautiful white sand beaches, stone runs and a range of hills, Wickham Heights, which includes the Falklands’ highest peak, Mount Usborne, at 705m (2,312 feet). Settlements nestle along the coastline and there is a variety of wildlife.

The Great Plain of Lafonia lies to the south of the isthmus, a flat, open area of land with glorious golden hues and open skies creating landscapes of contrasting colours. Settlements are sparse and the best wildlife is at the most southerly point. Lafonia has much historical interest.

Travel around East Falkland is generally by road though some settlements do operate airstrips and can be reached using the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS). Off-roading is not usually permitted with hire vehicles but local guides provide trips to many places of interest. Their driving skills along with accompanying commentary and anecdotes bring to life trips to remote locations.

North Camp
The North Camp of East Falkland, strictly speaking, is the area north of a range of hills known as the Wickham Heights. There are many places to visit as easy day-trips from Stanley, but why not stay a while longer to soak up the experiences on offer?

Johnson’s Harbour is a pretty settlement of typical white washed, red-roofed buildings. Off-road tracks lead to Volunteer Point, home to the largest colony of king penguins on the Islands. This “must-see” wildlife site has a lovely long white sand beach as well as a fantastic range of birdlife, with the sights, sounds and scents of the king penguins a highlight.

To the north-west lie the settlements of Elephant Beach and Port San Carlos. Elephant Beach is situated on the edge of the Cape Dolphin peninsula with splendid sandy beaches, rocky shores, blowholes and caves. Ponds of varying sizes are scattered across the land. There is wildlife aplenty including sea lions, various species of birds and sometime dolphins.

Port San Carlos is an excellent place for keen hikers and birders. Waterbirds swim on Paloma ponds; gentoo and Magellanic penguins inhabit the beautiful Paloma Beach whilst rockhopper penguins are on the rocky outcrop of Fanning Head.

South of the hills is San Carlos. A small museum gives an insight into the role of the settlement in the 1982 war and the cemetery corral is a pause for quiet reflection and a chance to pay respects to those who gave their lives. San Carlos has a café and the chance to try your hand at painting ceramics.

Fitzroy and Bertha’s Beach make a great day trip from Stanley. Fitzroy has memorials for the 1982 war and the beach is a long stretch of white sand with abundant wildlife including waterbirds, gentoo and Magellanic penguins.

Accommodation is available at all the settlements and there are a variety of places at which to stay including Darwin House in Darwin, the only serviced accommodation available.

Self-catering is offered at James Cabin at Elephant Beach, White Grass Cottage at San Carlos, Racepoint Farm Cottage and Racepoint Farm Flat at Port San Carlos, and Johnson’s Harbour Cottage at Johnson’s Harbour.

Lafonia
The East Falkland isthmus is the gateway to the southern area known as Lafonia, named after the Lafone brothers, traders of the mid-1800s. In the early days of cattle ranching, the brothers set up a salting works at Saladero. Today this government-owned farm is the location of agricultural department trials. Visitors are welcome by advance arrangement and the annual ram show takes place here.

Darwin and neighbouring Goose Green are the two main settlements in the north part of Lafonia. Easily reached from the international airport at Mount Pleasant, this area is a gentle introduction for the wildlife enthusiast. Southern giant petrel, Magellanic oystercatchers, skuas, ruddy-headed geese, kelp geese, upland geese and the Falklands flightless steamer duck are easily seen and occasionally the chiloe widgeon.

For the historian there is much to see, from the carefully reconstructed stone corral at Darwin to the trail of the 1982 war including many British memorials and the Argentine cemetery. Views in all directions are glorious, to the flat plateau of Mount Usborne, the highest point at 705m (2,312 feet) and across the sparkling bays. Accommodation and food are available at both Darwin House and Goose Green café.

Travel south, across the beautiful open plains. White grass is the dominant feature but takes on a stunning array of golden hues throughout the day. North Arm settlement is located in the southern part of Lafonia. It has an excellent little museum, packed with artefacts of Falkland farming and camp life. North Arm Farm offers accommodation at Kiwi Cottage and George House for intrepid travellers who wish to get a feel of real Falklands’ life; simple, clean and comfortable.

North Arm and Goose Green are the Falklands’ largest farms. Sheep shearing takes place in summer months and can usually be viewed with the farm manager’s permission. The area is also great for casual fishing; seek advice from the farm manager first.

West Falkland has a scattered population across a number of settlements and farms. Characterised by rugged hills and spectacular coastline, the West is home to a variety of wildlife, great hill-walking opportunities and a chance to really get away from it all.

There are many places to stay on West Falkland including the comfortable Port Howard Lodge, farm-stays and homely cottages. Itineraries can easily be organised to include a range of destinations or a short stop-over to get a feel for the way of life on this island.

The Concordia Bay ferry runs from New Haven on East Falkland to Port Howard on the West. Dolphins frequently swim alongside as the boat nears a landing and there is a sense of being able to reach out and almost touch the land either side as the vessel makes its way through the narrows to Port Howard. The voyage is around two hours and can be undertaken as a foot passenger or with a vehicle.

Most international visitors are more likely to travel to West Falkland with the Government Air Service (FIGAS), landing on one of the many airstrips serving the small communities of the West. Accommodation providers will arrange a transfer service and further transportation to the various points of interest. Roads link the main settlements and farms, with off-road experiences available to more remote locations. Vehicle tours are on offer.

There is much to see. The largest settlements of Fox Bay and Port Howard are excellent jump-off points whilst smaller settlements provide an enjoyable feeling of isolation and a break from the rigours of everyday life. Take time to explore the coastline on foot, watch the wildlife, do some fishing, climb one of the West’s many hills or simply relax and admire the dramatic views.

West Falkland beckons to be part of any island-hopping itinerary.

Northern Section
The northern part of West Falkland has lovely coastline with idyllic inlets and bays offering great areas for exploration and superb views. Mount Adam, the highest point on the West at 700 metres (2297 feet) is located towards the north-west; an exhilarating hike to the top affords fantastic views. The Warrah is a short but wide river, excellent for fishing with a good reputation for the size and quality of fish. The Falklands’ largest “forest” is also situated in the north of West Falkland at Hill Cove.

Some settlements have visitor accommodation with various attractions and activities. All can be reached with the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) and are linked by a road network.

Port Howard is an attractive sheep farming settlement on the east coast, nestled under Mount Maria 658 metres (2158 feet). It is easy to explore on foot; a gentle stroll will take in the harbour area, pretty settlement buildings, a small museum with memorabilia from the 1982 war and a little further afield the local cemetery, which includes the grave of Captain Hamilton who lost his life in 1982. Mount Maria is an excellent walk providing stunning views across Falkland Sound. Guided tours and fishing expeditions can also be organised.

Shallow Bay and Hill Cove are located on the northern coast with amazing vistas of the north-west islands. Crooked Inlet Farm at Roy Cove is situated on the western shore, tucked into a picturesque bay with lovely views across to outlying islands.

These places are all perfect jump-off points for that strenuous trek up Mount Adam, exploration of Hill Cove forest, fishing expeditions and the leisurely soaking up of farm-life. Enjoy beach-combing, birding or relaxed rambles around the settlements and shores.

Tours can be organised to include Grave Cove at Dunbar to see spectacular scenery and the only black-browed albatross colony on West Falkland.

There are several accommodation options in the Northern Section of West Falkland. Port Howard Lodge in the east offers catered accommodation while in the west, Crooked Inlet at Roy Cove and Shallow Bay Cottage both offer self-catering.

Southern Section
Travel south by road on West Falkland and you will encounter changing landscapes as the route twists and turns through valleys, alongside hills and through the lakelands. Much of the landscape is hilly with lovely cliffs sweeping down to the turquoise-blue seas.

Excellent fishing opportunities are available on the Chartres and Malo Rivers and around smaller creeks and the shores. There are many wildlife watching locations and great hikes.

Settlements in the south with visitor accommodation are Fox Bay West, Port Edgar and Port Stephens. These can be accessed via the road network or a flight with the Falkland Islands Government Air Service.

Intrepid visitors can camp at the Patricia Luxton National Nature Reserve which must be reached by road. This is the perfect spot if you want to truly escape civilisation! Nearby are Hawk’s Nest Ponds, a peaceful area of flat land, ideal for easy walking and birding.

On the east coast, Fox Bay West offers access to fishing on the River Malo, and the beautiful beach and penguin rookery at Fox Bay Mountain. Across the harbour at Fox Bay East is a memorial to the events of the 1982 occupation. Black Shanty House provides visitors with self-catering accommodation.

Port Edgar is also located on the east coast in a large, sheltered natural harbour. There are fantastic walking opportunities from short strolls around the settlement to longer hikes for great views, lovely white sand beaches and wildlife.Try your hand at fishing or observe life around the farm, including sheep shearing, if happening. Self-catering accommodation is provided at Moelwyn Cottage.

Port Stephens is situated in the south-west of West Falkland, at the end of the road. The amazing coastline gives stunning views across the ocean; gentoo, Magellanic and rockhopper penguins can all be found here. Discover too, the unusual rock formations known locally as Indian Village. Visitors can stay at Port Stephens Cottage on a self-catering basis.

The unspoiled environment of the Falkland Islands is a must-visit for anyone with a yearning to discover an off-the-beaten-track pristine destination.

Incomparable and abundant wildlife
Wildlife encounters are amazing. Marvel at the sparring of male elephant seals or the majestic black-browed albatross in flight. Enjoy the antics of penguins in their colonies, squabbling raucously with their neighbours, stealing nesting materials, or simply sitting silently to soak up the sun. Many experiences are guaranteed during summer months as birds and marine mammals have established colonies at locations around the islands. Sightings of whale pods and blows, rare visitors or other notable happenings are always shared amongst Islanders and visitors alike.

Glorious landscapes, beaches, skies
The landscapes themselves, from rugged rocky coastlines to spectacular white sand beaches, boulder-scattered hills to sweeping open plains, magnificent stone runs to picturesque settlements, all set against a backdrop of ever-changing big skies are a beauty to behold.

Fabled history and traditions
The Falklands have a rich history from the days of early settlement including stone corrals and pioneer cottages through involvement in both world wars and to the establishment of economic activities that support the current development of the Islands. The Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley is an excellent place to discover aspects of Falkland life both past and present.

Some visitors arrive in the Islands to learn more about the 1982 war. Many monuments and memorials, along with museums and other memorabilia can be found in settlements across East and West Falkland and some of the smaller islands

Get away from it all
But one of the main attractions of a visit to the Falklands is to simply absorb the pace and opportunities of Island life. Enjoy the incredible experience of a stay on a remote island with just a handful of permanent human inhabitants, arriving in style on a small aircraft to a personal meet-and-greet at the airstrip. Islanders are renowned for their hospitality including hearty home-cooked meals and delicious baking. It is an experience that you will never forget.

Birds & Sealife
The Falkland Islands are the ultimate birding experience with large, easily accessible colonies of some of the world’s rarest and most enchanting birds. There are plenty of species for the amateur birder and the enthusiast alike.

A birder’s paradise
Best known for penguins, the antics of these birds never fail to delight both at sea and on shore. Majestic king, feisty rockhopper, raucous gentoo and shy magellanic penguins are easy to find with the more elusive macaroni penguin and even hybrids blending into rockhopper colonies in some locations.

Over 70% of the world’s black-browed albatross breed around the islands. Magnificent in flight, clumsy when landing but elegant in appearance, the albatross is a stunning photographic study.

Other striking seabirds include the southern giant petrel which also sweeps majestically along the shores, storm petrels and diving petrels. Rock cormorants and imperial cormorants breed in the Islands, skuas and gulls are plentiful, terns can be seen in some locations. Oystercatchers, plovers and kelp geese inhabit many shores. Black-crowned night herons pick their way carefully and quietly along the water’s edge, often sheltering under old jetties and shipwrecks.

These are just a few of the birds you will find here on the Falklands. Endemic species are the Cobb’s wren, found on a number of small islands, and the Falklands’ Flightless Steamer Duck with its distinctive call. The striking Southern Caracara has colourful plumage but it’s the inquisitive nature of the Striated Caracara that will bring this bird to your attention!

Mammals in the ocean
The Islands are home to sea lions, fur seals and the world’s largest pinniped, the elephant seal. Dolphins play in the surf and love to follow boats. Orcas are frequently seen along the coast of Sea Lion Island, on the look-out for their next meal.

Wildlife experiences are guaranteed and with only a few visitors in many locations, the up-close-and-personal experience is second to none.

Epic Landscapes
The Falkland Islands are a pristine landscape of endless horizons, colours and contrasts with stunning seascapes to match. There is plenty of space and scenery to enjoy.

Bursting with colour
Subtle hues of greens and yellows, boulder-strewn hills and tiny red-and-white settlements nestling into the land create beautiful vistas. Shimmering seas reflect the sun in an amazing array of brilliant blues and aqua-marines. Kelp forests twist and turn, in shades of subdued browns and greens, as they follow the ebb and flow of ocean currents. All set against a backdrop of ever-changing skies, from brilliant daytime blues to reds, crimsons and golds of the setting sun.

Rugged vistas
The offshore islands to the west of the archipelago are characterised by jagged cliff tops and rugged peaks, some dropping steeply, others sweeping down to long white sand beaches, inviting coves and boulder-strewn shores. Large ponds are features of open plains. Rocky outcrops and small tussac islands dot the coastline. Contrast these with small islands to the east which are flatter but no less scenic with open land and magnificent seashores.

Glorious seascapes
West Falkland has both rugged and rolling terrain with a mix of spectacular cliffs, hills, hidden valleys and flat lakelands. In the south are rock formations known as “Indian Village” due to their unusual wig-wam shapes. Impressive stone runs are found on East Falkland. These rivers of rock tumble down the hillsides, some stream-like, others very wide. Travel south in East Falkland to the Great Plain of Lafonia for miles and miles of uninterrupted golden grasslands. Both East and West boast beautiful beaches and lovely shores.

Stop awhile to watch the changing patterns and colours of the seas. Admire the shifting light as the sun sets, casting a range of hues across the hills. The Falklands are a great place to simply relax and enjoy the views.

History & Heritage
The Falkland Islands have a rich history embracing geological features, some famous visitors, maritime adventures, farming traditions and of course the events of the 1982 war. There is much to discover.

A naturalist’s wonder
Rocks and fossils tell a fascinating story dating back one billion years; the most interesting and unusual feature being stone runs, rivers of rock cascading out of the mountains to the valley floor. Stone runs are found on East Falkland, easy to view from the roadside but at their most spectacular when seen from above! The naturalist Charles Darwin spent longer on the Falklands than the Galapagos Islands and his world-changing theories were based on his discovery of a wolf-like animal called the Warrah, sadly now extinct, and his fossil-finds.

Early settlers
Stone corrals and turf walls were constructed by early settlers in the Islands and splendid examples can still be explored at Darwin and Stanley. Stone buildings survive at a number of locations, though later houses were built from wood due to the ease and cost of importation of light-weight materials.

Pioneer cottages on Drury Street and Pioneer Row are now mainly privately-owned houses but can be seen and photographed on a guided or self-guided tour of the Islands’ capital. Cartmell Cottage, on Pioneer Row, is owned by the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust and open to visitors. It depicts life at various points in time through donated exhibits.

Maritime tradition
Over one hundred ships have been wrecked off Falkland shores, due to gales and hidden rocks. The Lady Elizabeth survives at the eastern end of Stanley harbour and a few remains can be found elsewhere around the Islands. A mizzen mast from the SS Great Britain is displayed on Victory Green in Stanley. Artefacts from some of the ships and interesting anecdotes are in the Historic Dockyard Museum. Cape Pembroke Lighthouse, at the extreme eastern end of the Stanley peninsula is another reminder of times past.

Farm life
Farming heritage is on display at the excellent little museum at North Arm as well as through memorabilia at the Historic Dockyard Museum. Travel around the Islands, in summer months particularly, gives an insight into continuing, daily farm life with opportunities to view sheep shearing and through conversations with farm workers.

Plenty of sunshine and blue skies provide the perfect setting for many outdoor activities in the Falklands. Vast open landscapes, rolling hills, sheltered harbours and hidden coves offer a range of opportunities.

Personal encounters with inquisitive residents
Wildlife encounters are up-close-and-personal; sit down, wait patiently by a penguin colony and it is quite likely that a penguin will come to look at you! Small birds, such as the tussac bird and dark-faced ground tyrant are equally curious and will want to know what you are up to. But most inquisitive of all is the striated caracara, known locally as the Johnny Rook is who is bold enough to steal from you! These are just a few of the wildlife delights that await.

Walking and fishing are popular outdoor pastimes and can be enjoyed in the company of others, with a local guide or you can choose to go-it-alone. Advice is freely given to get the best from a hiking route or fishing location.

Stunning photographic opportunities
The Islands offer perfect opportunities for professional and amateur photographers alike with stunning scenery and amazing animal antics easy to capture. Ever-changing landscapes provide specialists with a range of photographic opportunities.

Ideal location for outdoor sports
Other outdoor pursuits can be enjoyed around the Islands including geo-caching, water-sports, shooting and golf. Sailing is gaining popularity and yachts are warmly welcomed to travel around the archipelago.

Stanley has an annual half-marathon and is also home to the world’s most southerly certified full marathon. Running is enjoyed by many Islanders, some of whom pitch themselves again horse-riders in the “Man versus Horse” race.

Get out and explore for a whole day to really appreciate the feelings of indulgence when you return to a homely welcome or a cosy cottage of your own. Should you want to spend some time indoors, look out for art and craft activities, bring or buy your own materials and enjoy some down-time – you will have earn it!

Wildlife Watching
The Falkland Islands are one of the best places in the world for wildlife watching. With just a few exceptions, there are no barriers between watcher and wildlife and most days you are unlikely to share your wildlife watching spot with other humans.

Mischievous penguins
Soak up the sights, sounds and scents as you sit alongside a penguin colony watching gentoos steal nesting materials from their neighbours, rockhoppers scale impossibly steep cliffs or young, fluffy kings behaving like petulant teenagers making whistling noises and stomping their feet!

Look carefully for a stray macaroni amongst the rockhoppers. Sit a respectful distance from Magellanic burrows and you may be rewarded by the sight of their young. The joys of penguin watching cannot be overstated as there is always something happening.

Spectacular birdlife
Across the archipelago there are many and varied birding opportunities. Birdlife proliferates everywhere but if you are hoping to see a particular species, research your destination to be sure you will find it. Cobb’s wrens are on rodent-free islands. The inquisitive striated caracara, found on most offshore islands, is a delight to behold but keep a keen eye on your belongings. Black-browed albatrosses are numerous in some places.

Follow the Countryside Code, find an observation spot around 6 metres (20 feet) from the birds and you may find that they come to take a look at you.

Basking seals and sea lions
Seals and sea lions are also found at many locations. Floating in the shallows, basking in the sun, lazily flipping sand, nuzzling young, contesting a favourite location or a female, there is always something to observe. Sea Lion Island has the added chance of spotting an orca (killer whale) on the hunt for the next meal.

Whale watching
Trips out to sea afford the opportunity to try to spot the spectacular blows often exhibited by various species of baleen whale. Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins are frequently seen in the shallows and often accompany boats. Tours can be arranged to include the viewing of penguin colonies and sooty shearwaters on the ocean surface as dusk falls.

Gypsy Cove is the closest penguin colony to Stanley and all other destinations have wildlife watching opportunities. Spend as long as you wish and simply enjoy.

Photography
The glorious golden hues of open plains contrast with vast, open skies whilst rocky cliffs and hills form dramatic backdrops for a delicate flower or feisty tussle in a penguin colony. Whatever your level of skill with a camera of any kind, there is no reason to leave the Islands without a collection of inspirational images to remind you of your adventures. You may even choose to visit on a specialised photographic tour. Described as “a photographic extravaganza”, there really is something for everyone.

Wildlife is the most obvious theme and even without a telephoto lens, the birds and marine mammals make fascinating subject material. The opportunities are endless. Huge elephant seals basking in the sunlight, lazily flicking sand with their enormous flippers; sea lions rearing their heads amongst the tussac grass; gentoo penguins carefully stealing nesting materials from neighbours; Magellanic penguins peering from burrows; seabirds graceful in flight; a stunning striated cara-cara simply looking straight at you. With even the smallest zoom, young birds are brought into sharp or fuzzy focus to create an amazing image.

Ever-changing light conditions, big blue skies, aquamarines of the sea and soft white sands create the perfect conditions for spectacular landscape photography. Rolling hills, rocky ridges, open plains and seascapes provide fantastic settings and subjects in their own right. Early morning hues and nighttime fiery reds, crashing cascading waves and tranquil, reflective waters are favourite themes.

Colourful settlements nestle into foothills and straggle attractively along shorelines. The capital city, Stanley, has many buildings of interest from pioneer cottages to Christ Church Cathedral, the striking Cape Pembroke Lighthouse and iconic Whalebone Arch.

The Islands are truly a photographer’s paradise. Whatever your length of stay you cannot fail to capture a magnificent view, the entertaining antics of the wildlife or that simple special moment that sets the Falklands apart.

Walking & Hiking
The Falkland Islands must surely be considered amongst the best places in the world in which to walk. With such a sparse human population it is rare to meet anyone else outside Stanley. This is the essence of the walking experience, choose your own company then enjoy a very personal relationship with just the wilderness and wildlife.

An unparalleled great outdoors
With a gloriously unpolluted atmosphere the views on a bright, clear day are truly fantastic and there’s fresh, clean air to inhale deeply. And all to the accompaniment of the natural sounds of birdsong, the sea lapping the shore, a brisk breeze in the hills or the simple sound of silence.

Hiking routes are still under development which means that walkers must have a sense of responsibility and an understanding of the natural environment. But this is also part of the adventure of the Falklands, the feeling that you may be discovering a sheep track, sheltered cove, a wildlife-spot or even a rare plant where no human has previously trod.

Sea views from the lighthouse
Around Stanley there are plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding hills along with beautiful beaches to discover. Cape Pembroke is a lovely area with small ponds, coves and a charming lighthouse. Take a taxi to get started or begin at your accommodation to incorporate Stanley’s heritage into your walk.

Elsewhere on East and West Falkland and on smaller islands, accommodation providers will be ready with suggestions of walks from short scenic strolls to strenuous hikes, recommending particular points of interest and wildlife hot-spots. Some have sketch-maps or leaflets with walking information.

Geocaching
Keen geocachers will find themselves busy as they seek out geocaches in various locations around the archipelago. A local group can offer advice if needed.

Stay safe by telling someone where you are going, take water, food; wear strong walking boots and layers of clothes.

Fishing
Few places can offer wilderness fishing akin to the Falkland Islands. There are no crowds in the Falklands, just remote locations to enjoy the privacy of estuaries, rivers and streams. Add a backdrop of rugged hills or a beautiful beach and of course the fish, to create an experience regularly described by anglers as outstanding.

Truly wild fishing
Brown / Sea Trout and Mullet are noted for their size. The record for the largest sea trout caught in the Islands is held by Alison Faulkner at 22lbs 12.5 oz (approx 10. 3 kg). Local enthusiasts describe Falklands fishing as “world class”, “extremely good fun” and “in pristine condition”; “sea-trout fishing in the Falkland Islands is amongst the very best in the world. The isolated, wild locations, the beautiful rivers with picturesque pools and above all the number, size and willingness of the fish have spoiled me for fishing in the UK”.

The trout season runs from 1st September to 30th April. The best months are September/October and February/March with larger fish usually caught during the latter period. Few fish run in December/January, a better time for estuary fishing. The ideal time to fish is when a river is clearing after a spate. Mullet can be fished for all year round.

West Falkland offers a number of opportunities for fishing. On East Falkland the San Carlos River is an ideal location. If you want to come to fish, seek advice in advance from a tour operator or the Falkland Islands Tourist Board.

You don’t need to be an expert to catch fish! Even non-anglers can have fun and perhaps discover a new talent. With a little advice from a local, a fishing rod and appropriate bait, throw your line in to see what happens. A tasty evening meal may await!

Sailing
With around 1,300 kilometres of coastline, the Falkland Islands can be explored by yacht and are the perfect setting for a sailing adventure. Turquoise blue seas and white sand beaches, home to an amazing array of wildlife, are the essence of any sailing experience.

A small number of companies offer Falklands’ expeditions or include the Islands as part of a wider itinerary. Visits can usually be tailored to the requests of passengers and access destinations that would normally be unavailable to larger and deeper drafted vessels.

Landings will include walks and shore excursions to various places of interest. Enjoy the thrill of a zodiac (inflatable boat) ride then take things at your own pace, or on a tailor-made trip agreed with your Captain. Time ashore and aboard will offer the opportunity to taste delicious Falklands-sourced foods including home-grown vegetables, locally-reared meat and the delights of smoko.

Falklands’ travel agencies can connect you with local vessel owners and offer itinerary suggestions. Add on the Antarctic or South Georgia and you are definitely destined for the holiday of a lifetime.

Private yachts are warmly welcomed to the Islands but are requested to give at least 24 hours’ notice of their intentions to both Customs and Immigration and the Harbour Authorities. Stanley must be the first port of call for visiting yachtsman who wish to further explore the Islands.

A Seafarers’ Centre is located at the eastern end of Stanley providing various services to sailors. Showers, laundry facilities, opportunities for rest and recreation, internet access including skype and wi-fi along with a café service can be obtained.

Arts & Crafts
To balance the outdoor activities or during inclement weather, you may wish to spend some time indoors. Falkland Islanders pursue many hobbies with arts and crafts as popular pastimes.

Skills workshops
Algernon Asprey painted tiny, colourful settlements beneath huge skies. Falklands’ artists continue to capture these magnificent views. Changing light conditions, rugged mountains and spectacular shorelines provide inspiration along with everyday farming life and the incredible wildlife. Occasional art workshops are held in the Islands. Artists can bring their own materials, or buy supplies in Stanley, to create their own landscapes or portraits of the flora and fauna.

Visitors interested in wool-crafts are easily catered for. Try your hand at spinning or weaving the local wool at the Spinners and Weavers Guild in Stanley. The Guild meets on Monday evenings and Thursday afternoons and welcomes visitors, with advance planning. Other workshops are held from time to time, including felting and dyeing, usually in Stanley or at Darwin House. The Guild also display their skills at events such as the Craft Fair which is held every September in Stanley. The Rookery at Dunnose Head, West Falkland, is home to a beautiful purpose-built studio overlooking the sea where Rosemary Wilkinson welcomes day visitors, by prior arrangement, to experiment with embellishing machines.

Falklands’ handicrafts
The annual Craft Fair provides the best opportunity for all local artists and crafters to display their creations. Islanders of all ages contribute spun wool, knitted, crotched and felted items, woodwork, hornwork, leatherwork, paintings, photographs and a large variety of models. Prizes are on offer and standards are always high. A visit to the Craft Fair is highly recommended.

Craft sales (sometimes advertised as craft fayres) are held periodically and are great places to seek out craft buys. As well as collecting souvenirs, take home some local materials and try out the crafts you see for yourself, an ideal reminder of your stay.

Sports
Land-based Sports
A number of sports take place in the Islands which can add interest to your time in the Islands or may even form the main purpose of your visit.

Ruggedly beautiful and challenging, the Stanley Golf Course offers the opportunity to play on one of the most southerly courses in the world with a striking backdrop of the Two Sisters and Tumbledown mountains. The 4,500 yard long course has 12 greens and 18 tees and has been developed and maintained to a high standard by dedicated members over the years.

The club welcomes visitors, you can play a full or part round for just £5. The course may look easy at a glance, but with the brisk winds typical of the Falklands it will test the skills of even the most experienced golfer to the limit.

Rifle shooting in the Falkland Islands dates back to the 1880s. The Falklands’ Rifle Club offers full bore rifle shooting at a 1000m range based at Rookery Bay, Stanley. The Falkland Gun Club offers practical pistol, precision pistol, small bore rifle (.22), all air disciplines and all clay target disciplines. The Phillips Point Range, Stanley is set up for Skeet (Olympic, English and American), Trap (ABT/Wobble and DTL) and English Sporting (simulated game and FITASC). Limited game shooting experiences are available and must be accompanied by a local guide.

Both clubs welcome visitors and have club firearms available to hire. A small temporary membership fee means you can shoot without need for a local licence.

The Stanley marathon is the world’s most southerly AIMS-certified marathon. Organised by the Standard Chartered Bank to raise money for charity, the marathon takes place each year in March and welcomes participants from overseas to join the locals in this challenging race.

Water Sports
Water-sports are not yet offered on a commercial basis but with a little advance planning it is possible to make the most of the beautiful shorelines and experience the cool temperatures of the South Atlantic in the company of our fantastic wildlife.

The surfing is described as “an adventure in magnificent settings,” by local enthusiasts and the Falklands beaches and coastline have barely been explored to date. There are no crowds and on most occasions the water is shared with Peale’s Dolphins whilst giant petrels and other seabirds fly overhead.

The most commonly surfed spot is Surf Bay just a few minutes’ drive from Stanley. With more than 1,300 kilometres of rugged coastline on both East and West Falklands there are many areas which have rarely been surfed and others yet to be discovered. A 5mm wetsuit is recommended as the minimum requirement with hood, booties and gloves. A standard surfboard is adequate.

Windsurfing and kayaking are also enjoyed by residents. There have been a number of kayaking expeditions made by visitors in recent years, the most successful of which was a 22-day circumnavigation of the Islands by New Yorker, Marcus Demuth. Marcus particularly enjoyed the hospitality he received from Islanders as well as the journey.

The Shallow Marine Surveys Group regularly dive at sites around the Islands. The Group describes the shallow marine environment as “the most diverse habitat of the Islands” and believes that there are many new species waiting to be discovered. Over one hundred shipwrecks lie on Falkland shores, also of interest to divers. Marine mammals frequently enjoy interacting with divers as they explore the coastal environment.

There are no shops selling or renting equipment in the Falkland but enthusiasts of water-based activities can make contact the Falkland Islands Tourist Board to connect with locals who will advise you about your chosen sport.

Shopping in the Falklands
A visit to Stanley would not be complete without spending some time in the shops to take home the perfect reminder of your time in the Islands. Gift shops stock many locally made products which are sought after by visitors and residents alike.

Beautiful items are created from the sumptuously soft Falkland wool. Crafted into felted and knitted products, from tiny baby bootees to chunky scarves, eye-catching bags to pretty key-rings, delicately-designed flower brooches to simple soaps, there is a gift to be found for everyone. Unique jewellery pieces are made from Falkland pebbles (a semi-precious, translucent stone) and Falkland coins. Salvaged wood from shipwrecks is up-cycled, the local newspaper has been re-fashioned into purses and fabrics re-purposed in a variety of imaginative ways.

Falkland artists, designers and photographers are continually inspired by their surroundings, producing a whole range of high quality artwork in different media and a range of other goods. Look out for pottery, clocks, clothing, lampshades, placemats, wallets and gift cards all with Falkland themes.

And if you are keen to take a penguin home with you, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from! Soft toys are the obvious choice but of course penguins feature on many souvenir items. Or capture a taste of the Falklands with a jar of diddle-dee jam.

Collectors will enjoy perusing the stamps and coins on offer from the Falklands and South Georgia. Stamps depict many aspects of Falklands’ life past and present, special events, anniversaries and wildlife.

Shopping experiences are not entirely limited to Stanley though it is here you will find by far the largest range of choices. Around the Islands, there are opportunities to pick up that special souvenir, so look carefully at cabinets and wall hangings if you are visiting a guest house or lodge to be sure to not miss out.

Cruise visitors are able to choose from a variety of Stanley shore excursions including town and nature walks, bus tours, farm visits, trips to wildlife destinations and battlefields. Discover the social and natural history of the Islands, learn about life on a Falklands farm or travel to the memorials of the 1982 conflict. Visits to the smaller islands of the archipelago will include spectacular wildlife colonies and often the experience of a Falklands “smoko” with delicious cakes and cookies that just have to be tasted.

If you are here for a longer stay, you will find many opportunities to tempt you to travel around. Spend a few hours in the company of penguins at Volunteer Point, soaking up the sights, sounds and smells that make this a special place. Visit Bertha’s Beach or Cape Bougainville, Cape Dolphin or Kidney Island to discover many more marine mammals and birds including southern sealions, rockhopper penguins and the delightful Cobb’s wren.

Historic Dockyard Museum
The Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley contains many exhibits of social and maritime interest as well as displays of natural history and links with the Antarctic. Temporary exhibitions celebrate anniversaries and events happening in the Islands. The museum is a must-see for all visitors, providing an insight into Falklands’ life, past and present.

Traditional Falklands’ life and history
The special lifestyle of the Islands is celebrated through farming tools, children’s bone toys, fretwork, a recreated kitchen with a peat stove, cutlery and crockery including Goss China, various musical items of which the most impressive is a grand mechanical “jukebox” from the late 1800s and much, much more.

Maritime exhibits include models, figureheads, artefacts and relics from sailing vessels. Read quirky stories of mariners and their exploits in the Islands’ waters. Learn also about the modern day fishing industry, the main contributor to the Falklands’ economy.

The world’s oldest remains of the Warrah, a fox-like animal which once inhabited the Islands, form part of the natural history display which includes fascinating skulls and bones from marine mammals. Many of the Falklands’ familiar species are brought to life by taxidermy; an amazingly realistic exhibition of wildlife is set against a backdrop of a recreated seashore. Explore the geological past through rocks, fossils and timelines.

Many visitors want to learn more about the impact of the 1982 war on Islanders and their lifestyles. Listen to audio recordings which tell stories from the perspective of children of those difficult days.

The Falklands are a gateway to Antarctica. The Reclus Hut, a genuine Antarctic refuge, takes you back to the 1950s and to the heart of the explorers’ harsh living conditions as you experience the sounds of the winds and really feel the isolation of the deep south.

New beginnings
The newly opened Dockyard complex is made up of a number of buildings, each with an historical significance. The main museum is housed in an old “storehouse”. The smithy, boathouse and gaol are part of the legacy of the area whilst the R/T station & telephone exchange was moved here from a previous site. These smaller buildings provide additional areas to explore. Look at tools used by blacksmiths, cobblers, carpenters, farmworkers and horsemen. Discover the history of radio and telecommunications to the present day. See early printing equipment used for everything from newspapers and wedding invitations to proclamations of war.

A visit to Cartmell Cottage can also be included as part of your museum entry. This is one of the oldest houses in Stanley and Falklands’ lifestyles of the 1850s, 1940s and 1970s have been carefully recreated.

With so much to take in, set aside at least half a day to make the most of this great attraction.

1982 Battlefields
The war between Britain and Argentina in 1982 is of interest to many visitors to the Falklands. Memorials are placed around the Islands and small museums contain artefacts from both British and Argentine military.

San Carlos
Visit the British military cemetery at San Carlos for a poignant view across San Carlos water where the British troops landed and a fierce battle ensued. Today the atmosphere is notably peaceful and a small corral protects the graves of the few British soldiers buried on the Islands.

Ajax Bay, a disused meat-freezer plant, was utilised as a field hospital and can be visited with permission from the landowner.

Goose Green and Darwin
Around the Goose Green and Darwin area are many significant sites with memorials to British casualties. One hundred and fourteen Falkland Islanders were held prisoner by the Argentines in the community building at Goose Green. The Argentine cemetery at Darwin has a memorial wall partly surrounding simple white crosses, hung with rosaries and flowers, marking out each grave.

Stanley and Fitzroy
Around Stanley are hilltop memorials for the last battles fought before the final surrender. HMS Glamorgan is remembered at Surf Bay and the Atlantic Conveyor alongside the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse. Memorial Wood and the Liberation Monument on Ross Road commemorate the 255 British servicemen who gave their lives. Fitzroy settlement, also on East Falkland, has monuments to the Welsh Guards and seamen who lost their lives from the Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram.

Memorials and memorabilia
Elsewhere in the Islands are other memorials. HMS Sheffield is commemorated on Sea Lion Island. Pebble Island, temporarily requisitioned by the Argentines then recaptured by a daring SAS raid, has memorials including HMS Coventry.

Port Howard museum contains war memorabilia and the remains of crashed aircraft are situated a short drive from the settlement.

Falklands Flora
The Falkland Islands are home to a surprising number of beautiful plants. Around 350 species have been recorded of which 171 are native to the Islands and 13 are endemics which do not occur naturally anywhere else in the world. Introduced plants have arrived both deliberately and accidently. Colourful garden flowers around the Islands are usually imported but there is a growing interest in creating “native species gardens”.

The Falklands’ National Flower
The Pale Maiden is a native species and voted the national flower of the Falklands. This elegant plant has slender stems with bell-shaped flowers, the petals white with distinctive violet stripes. The yellow pale maiden is closely related but much rarer. Both flower mainly in the months of spring and early summer.

Tussac grass is one of the most important plants as it provides a valuable habitat for many creatures, great and small. Tussac grass is found along the coastline and dominates some small islands.

Attractive endemic flowering species include the delicate coastal naussauvia with tiny but prolific white flowers and a sweet smell of nectar on a warm summer’s day; the woolly and smooth daisies with bright yellow flowers; the lady’s slipper, an orange-yellow flower named for its fascinating shape; the snake plant which slides its way through stone runs; the vanilla daisy with beautiful white petals and a very distinctive eponymous scent.

Edible berries
Many native plants can be eaten and offer up a range of tastes. The ubiquitous diddle-dee is renowned for its bitter-sweet red berries; bitter when picked but deliciously sweet when made into jam.

Teaberries are enjoyed picked straight from the plant or baked into buns and pavlovas.

Scurvy grass produces pretty white blooms with a delicate yellow middle and all parts have a lovely citrus flavour, perfect for cordials on a hot summer day. Fachine leaves have a strong “herby” taste.

There is plenty to enjoy – a treat for all senses.

Falklands Life
The essence of the Falklands experience is perhaps that feeling of simply getting away from it all. Life feels almost “in the raw” in many remote locations and an adventure in itself.

The adventure begins by travelling in a twin-propeller Islander aircraft to land on a grass airstrip. Here you board a 4×4 vehicle to be transported to your accommodation. Everything is taken care of by your hosts, who will be on-hand throughout your stay.

Accommodation outside Stanley is farm-based and provides an understanding of how day to day activities are driven by the farming calendar.

Most farms offer the chance to view and some to participate in farm life first-hand. Sheep shearing and sheep herding using dogs happens almost everywhere. Orphaned lambs may need feeding – a treat for a child of any age!

Some farms continue to cut peat for fuel and may be keen for any helper to cut or rickle (build stacks of peat sods to dry). A few farms also keep cattle; some carry out daily milking by hand. If you can get up early enough, you may be invited to have a go!

For many families, home baking and bread making are the norm with a few still making their own butter. Vegetable gardens can be extensive with the produce pickled and preserved at the end of summer. Gardens are great to explore and the tasty products are regularly enjoyed at the table.
