Athens

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. Visit Thessaloniki’s Archaeological sites
The ancient forum (dated to the late 2nd or the early 3rd century AD) with squares, porticoes, additional buildings and odeum (293-395 AD), the palace complex of Galerius Maximianus (4th c. AD), the thermae, the hippodrome, the temples and other monuments and moveable finds (among them mosaics of exquisite art) brought to light in excavations and surveys. In the south square, is the famous Stoa of the Idols, which was two-storeyed and lavishly decorated.

The Triumphal Arch of Galerius (Kamara), built in AD 305 to commemorate his military successes in general in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire.

The Rotunda is an early 4th century building which later was converted into a Christian church.

Crete

Honey
Greek honey is famous for its high quality, aroma and outstanding taste. Its many variations in taste and aroma is due to the rich Greek flora. Mastic
A product that is unique in the world, as it is grown exclusively on the Aegean island of Chios. It is produced from the resin of the mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus) and can be consumed untreated without chemical or industrial processing. The father of medicine, Hippocrates, had noted the many therapeutic properties of mastic, especially for stomach disorders. These properties have been adopted by modern medicine.

Crocus Kozani
The Crocus, the “gold from Greek soil” as it is called, is included among the most precious and valuable spices from ancient civilizations, for its aromatic, colour, pharmaceutical and aphrodisiac properties. Cleopatra used it in her cosmetics, the Ancient Phoenicians in their offerings to the goddess Asparte, Homer referred to it in his writings, while we even come across it in the Old Testament.

Traditional liquors
Local liquors cannot but be included among the protagonists in Greek gustations or tastes. Products such as roses, cranberries, plums, mint, mastic, walnuts and many more “lend” their aromas and their tastes to alcohol with exciting results.

Sweet Preserves (spoon sweets)
Linked to the sweet welcome of a visitor, it is the foremost traditional treat in Greek homes. When served, it usually fills a teaspoon, hence its name. Apricots, peaches and nectarines, or “fruits of the sun”, are always “prêt-à-manger”, they have high nutritious effects, they make delicious jams and juices, and they are popular with confectioners and pastry cooks.

Small in size but great in taste: cherries. Ranging from light red to almost black, they fortify your natural defense, either fresh or in pastry. Very renowned are those coming from Macedonia and Agia in Larissa.

Famous for their mouthwatering figs are the areas of Kalamata and Evia. White or black, figs are equally tasteful fresh and dried (or in salads).

Grapes have been intrinsically linked to Greece since the times of Homer. Vast vineyards cover the Greek territory and decorate it with white, red, and pink little juicy balls. As an aperitif
Sun-dried sweet wines originated from every part of Greece. Taste the worldwide famous Santorinian Vinsanto, made by blending together the varieties of Assyrtiko and Aidani.The famous Vinsanto, a luscious sweet wine, is made from sun-dried grapes and aged by law for at least three years.

A good Vinsanto, however, can easily age for more than 100 years. Vinsanto wines (the name means “wine from Santorini” and not “holy wine,” as in the case of the similarly named vinosanto from Italy) have a caramel- and toffee-like aspect, with a dried- fruit dimension that makes them great partners to all sorts of sweets, especially chocolate. But what is really unique about Vinsanto goes back to the individuality of the Assyrtico grape to begin with.

In comparison to other sweet Greek wines, Santorini’s Vinsanto wines have a characteristic freshness, thanks to all that natural Assyrtico acidity.

• Ksinomavro: The finest red variety of the Northern Greece. Depending on the time of maturation, it covers a wide range of tastes and nuances of red. Ksinomavro variety is one of the great divas of the Greek vineyard. It is capricious, demanding, and difficult to deal with, both in the vineyard and in the winery. The grape is capable of producing wines of stunning character and individuality and extraordinary complexity, with a seamless combination of intense extract and sheer finesse.

• Ayioryitiko or Mavro Nemeas: Coming from Peloponnese, it is the red wine that was supposed to be the favourite of the mythical king Agamemnon. Thanks to its deep red colour, rich aroma, and velvet taste it is the ideal wine for red meat and sauces. With pronounced cassis and blackberry flavor and a rich, mature, velvety, luscious texture, the supple young Ayioryitiko wines are fruit-forward and are enjoyable early. However, there is enough big structure to support long-term cellaring (5-10 years).

• Mavrotragano: An old red variety of Santorini, which has been brought back to life fairly recently. Fruity in taste, deep in colour and medium in acuity, it is marked by its high proof.

• Athiri: The white delight of the Aegean Sea. Its yellowish colour with the reflections of green and its distinctive, subtle fruity taste render it suitable for many kinds of dishes. Its lovely floral aromas and mouthwatering attack wakes up the palate. Common to the islands of the southern Aegean and Halkidiki, in eastern Macedonia.

• Assirtiko: Although cultivated in many other islands, Assirtiko reaches the apex of its originality on Santorini, but has successfully migrated to Halkidiki, Epanomi, Drama, and Mount Pangeo in Northern Greece as well as to the Peloponnese. Bearing the island’s volcanic DNA, it is delightfully rich of aromas, ranging from citrus and apple to honey, raisin and incense. It maintains a high acidity even in fully ripeness. With crispy acidity and excellent minerality, its wines are rich and refreshing. The aromas suggest citrus, lemon blossom, orange zest and grapefruit.

• Moshofilero: archeological findings prove its age-long relation to the district of Arcadia and its plateau. It is a versatile variety used for making a whole series of wines, from dry to fruity sparkling ones – also known as a blanc de gris variety, meaning that its skin color can range from light pink to deep purple. The dry white Mantinia is the most renowned of them all.

• Robola: One of the most elegant Greek varieties, this relatively high-proofed and acute white wine smells of citrus fruit and it is best served fresh. Combine it with seafood, preferably at its birthplace, the island of Kefalonia (Cephalonia).

• Savvatiano: Maybe the most widespread Greek wine variety with a history of over 2.500 years. The yellow-green white it produces leaves on your tongue the pleasure of peach, lemon, kiwi, banana, melon and strawberry in a rather low amount of acidity. It is the basis for the famous Retsina.

• Malagousia. This subtle Greek white variety is possibly related to the renowned “Malvasia” wine dating back to the Middle-Ages. It was rescued from obscurity thanks to the foresight of certain Greek producers who believed in the wine. The accolades of the critics and the enthusiastic response of the consumers did more than justify their acumen. The Malagousia wines have a strong bouquet and a musk aroma, while leaving a mild peppery taste in the mouth.Savvatiano: A variety from Mainland Greece, with its cultivation centered in the Attica region. It produces wines with the aromas of yellow fruit and low acidity.

As desserts
• Muscat: Although Muscat (Moschato in Greek) is cultivated in several places, the grape is historically associated with the straw-colored sweet wines of Samos. Samos muscats are full-bodies, dense and concentrated, with aromas of apple and pear.

• Mavrodafni: After 2 to 8 years of maturation, this red wine comes from Patra and Kefalonia. Vanilla, cherry, dried fruits and chocolate are the true spirit of this extensively exported wine variety.

Zythos – The Greek Beer

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, considered beer to have valuable medicinal qualities. Homer gives us a vivid description of how Alkinoos, king of Phaeacians, kept in his palace gold and silver kraters filled with wine made of barley (beer). Zythos, the greek word for beer, also comes up in texts of the ancient Greek geographer Strabo as well as of the ancient Greek historian Diodorus (from Sicily). The word comes from the verb zeo which means to boil and it appears that zythos was the name of an Egyptian drink made of barley.

How was the first modern Greek beer born?
When Otto, the first king of Greece, settled in the country in 1833, he brought with him scientists and beer specialists from Bavaria – his native land, with a view to boosting the domestic beer industry. So, in 1840, according to reliable sources, the first manually operated brewery was set up in Greece, to cater for the needs of the Bavarian officials and military men who were stationed in the country at the time.

However, it is not quite clear who among Melcher, Fischer, Waweck and Seel was the first to run this particular brewery, as they had all opened up beer businesses during the 1840’s in Athens. Ioannis Fix (Fuchs) came to Greece in 1850; he stayed and worked as an apprentice in Melcher’s brewery which he bought from his heirs in 1866. He is the maker of one of the best and oldest Greek beers. The factory he built in 1893 was later enlarged by his son Karl. On the site of the old installations a newer building was constructed which still stands in present-day Syngrou Ave. Works are currently under way to house the National Museum of Contemporary Art in the premises.

Breweries in other parts of the country were also created by Greek beer makers, such as Lorentzos Mamos who opened his business in Patras (1876); others followed, namely K. Lampros, Damianos, Kostis and M. & E. Klonaridis Bros in Athens, Stelios Tsokaropoulos in Piraeus and Mangiolos-Karampetsos and Petros Mamos – the first Greek certified beer maker – in Patras.

Another modern – for its time – brewing facility was set up in 1892 in Thessaloniki by Josef Misrachi and Solomon Fernandez. In time, factory installations grew bigger and its name was changed to Olympus Brewery. Later on it got merged with Naoussa Brewery, thus creating the Olympus-Naoussa Brewery. In 1928, the Fix Company absorbed it. The brewery was kept running until the mid-80s when it was finally closed down.

As soon as you try it, you will find that apart from being very tasty, the variety and body of Greek beer clearly differentiates it from the standard choice of “non-alcoholic refreshment”. This means that as an accompaniment to a meal it will pass the test with flying colours.

Greek beer will allow more successful combinations with food than wine does, it will accompany many tasty Greek dishes and mezedes [titbits].

There are tasty combinations which bring out the flavour of beer, and beers which enhance the gastronomic relish of certain dishes. The following have passed our taste test:

• Chicken next to a lager beer
• Veal next to an ale
• Salads and grilled vegetables next to a Weiss
• Mouth-watering ladera (vegetables or pulses cooked in olive oil) typical of the Greek cuisine, pasta, and hors d’ oeuvres such as eggplant salad will have a red beer as an accompaniment.

Last but not least, Premium beer is a special category in itself as it is quite a particular type with regard to taste, aroma, alcohol content, complexity, shelf life, and gourmet combinations. Usually an evening drink, it is consumed from autumn until the first warm months; it is the right choice of drink for a full-course dinner but you can also enjoy it on its own during a night out.

Pausanias is without doubt, the greatest traveller in antiquity. His many-volumed, multifarious work is the archaeologists’ ‘bible’, as by following his descriptions they have managed to excavate significant ancient cities and bring to light unique treasures.

Pausanias journeyed throughout Greece. He was the archetypal travel writer, collecting myths, legends, traditions, folklore, as well as information on the everyday life of the places he visited. At the same time he recorded in great detail the layout of cities, important sanctuaries and major architectural works, along with administrative arrangements and social relationships. In honour of this great social scientist, the National Trail 031 in the Peloponnese is called the ‘Pausanias’ trail’. It is an exceptional route that starts from Patras and ends in Olympia, passing through some of the most beautiful areas of Achaia, Arcadia and Ileia. Many societies organize trips to walk the trail and in this way one can enjoy the route – especially in spring or autumn – with other nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.

Flavours, colours and aromas
Travelling around the Greece of Dionysus and fine wines is a trend that has conquered the hearts of tourists. Lovers of fine wines and spirits follow the wine roads, combining their acquaintance with the Greek natural world and the ‘hunt’ for that splendid, liquid treasure.

Greek caves – the depths of nature
The Greek land is scattered with caves exceeding 8500 in number. Major geological processes have endowed the bowels of the Greek earth with true monuments to nature, filled with charm and mystery.

Some of the caves are renowned all over the world for their significant anthropological findings, such as Petralona cave in Chalidiki and Franchthi cave in the Peloponnese.

Human history has been linked to these mystical caves. Many of them were refuges for primeval man; others were important places of worship. The power of nature, manifesting itself in the silence, unseen by human eyes, has captivated all cultures. Great chthonic deities were regarded as the protectors of caves in Greece, like the mythical “Pories”, beings with great intelligence and bodily features both human and serpent-like.

Greek caves, like Melissani on Kefalonia, those at Alistrati and Prosotsani in Macedonia, the Perama cave in Ioannina, Epirus, the famous cave of Paiania in Attica, the caves of Limnes and Diros in the Peloponnese, Diktaion Antron (Diktaean Cave) in Crete, fascinate visitors with their inner, complex decoration. Stalactites and stalagmites of incredible beauty, an ‘architectural’ structure that forms halls similar to those in royal palaces, underground waters, crystal-clear and mystical, create unparalleled underground landscapes.

Many caves have been linked to religious tradition, like Mega Spilaion in the Peloponnese and of course, the famous Cave of the Apocalypse on the island of Patmos. There are also many small caves that were always considered sacred places, which have been converted into Orthodox churches, like Agios Konstantinos in the Peloponnese at Pellini .

Apart from being one of the special sights to see when travelling around this country, a visit to a Greek cave is a deeply mystical experience.

Sightseeing by bicycle is an activity that allows the rider to discover the environmental and cultural wealth of a region in the most pleasant and ecological manner. At the same time, he feels happy that he himself is contributing to the cultivation and development of an ecological conscience. This is an alternative, environmental-friendly transportation philosophy. Another athletic-tourist activity that is recently gaining more and more friends is mountain-biking. The mountain bike can be used both in the city as well as in the countryside, for a stroll or to exercise.

Sightseeing through nature by bicycle is in great demand and has developed accordingly. Biking allows the sightseer to travel greater distances than by hiking. The route that an interested cyclist can follow is characterized by its degree of difficulty, with respect to his physical condition and his experience.

Mountain bike programs are offered in many regions in the country throughout the year, covering all levels of difficulty.

On Foot

In previous years and before the integrated highway network was built in Greece, transportation and communication was carried out along the main road arteries that bisected the country, but mainly along paths which the older residents of the highland villages still call “dimosia” (dimosios = public road), because for them this was the main road access. Even though some of these older paths and the stone-paved cobbled roads –which are real works of art- have been converted into asphalt-surfaced roads, most of these still “slither” between the asphalt roads and continue to exist by crossing mountains, scrubs and ravines.

Thus, in recent years and with financing from various bodies (Municipalities, mountain-climbing clubs, private individuals, etc), many sections of these “road-paths” throughout Greece were serviced, restored and road-signs added, and in this manner created a broad network with a total length of approximately 3,500 km. The major part of this network is extensions to the European Long Distance Walking Paths, Ε4, Ε6 and categories Ο (3,000 km), while another 500 km of smaller walking paths have been created, which are also of comparable interest.

E6 Walking path
The Greek section of this Path has two branches: The first begins from the area of Prespes, passes through Kastoria, Ioannina and Dodoni, and concludes at the city of Igoumenitsa. The second branch begins from the region of Florina, bisects the highland regions of Western, Central and Eastern Macedonia , travels along the borders of Greece with FYROM and Bulgaria, and ends at the city of Alexndroupolis, in the region of Thrace.

E4 Walking path
This begins from the Pyrinaia Mountain Range and reaches Greece via former Yugoslavia. The Greek section of the E4 bisects Northern and Central Greece, the Peloponnese, arrives in Gythio and continues onto the island of Crete. The hiker or mountain climber thus has the opportunity to enjoy the whole extent of Greece’s landscapes and the riches of nature. The highest elevation of the total route is the Olympo Skolio peak (2,911 m).The ideal period for hiking along the Ε4 Walking Path is from May 15th to the beginning of October, because some villages along the route are inaccessible during winter, which therefore limits the places where a hiker can stay overnight. Frequently the opening of new forest roads confuses the hiker-sightseer. The climate is Mediterranean, very dry in summer with high temperature variations between day and night. Snow will be encountered along the route from November to June. The route to the southern section of the Walking Path (the Peloponnese and Crete) is more “walkable” than the northern section, as the hiker can walk here throughout the year since the climate is milder.

Wine Routes in Greece

The tradition of wine-making is a long and rich one in Greece, as is the case with all Mediterranean countries. Wine – the gift of god Dionysus – is associated not only with the nutritional habits of Greeks, but also with religious and popular traditions connected with their cultural heritage.

The Wine Routes are a special form of agritourism created to maintain and promote this heritage. There are selected routes for visitors to follow, which pass through the most picturesque viticultural areas and wineries. Much like silk back in the old times, winemaking too follows particular routes which pass through the major grapevine regions and wineries. Along these routes, you will be invited to sample local organically grown wines produced in limited quantities, some of which have won awards in international competitions. The winemaking areas of Northern Greece are known for their quality wines. In the region of Thrace wine routes stretch by River Evros, they are on Samothrace Island, in Rodopi and Xanthi areas. In Macedonia visit the wine vineyards in Kavala, Drama, Serres, Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Kilkis, Pella, Florina, Kastoria, Grevena, Kozani, Pieria and Imathia regions. In Thessaly, there are viticultural zones in Larisa, Magnesia, the Sporades Islands, Karditsa and Trikala areas. In Epirus, you will find wine-producing fields in Ioannina, Arta, Preveza and Thesprotia. The Ionian Islands of Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos (Zante) all have their quality vineyards.

The region of Central Greece comprises viticultural areas in Aitoloakarnania, Fokida, Evrytania, Fthiotida, Voiotia, Evia, Skyros Island and Attica. In the Peloponnese the wine routes run along Corinthia, Achaia, Ileia, Messinia, Laconia, Arcadia, Argolida and Kythira Island. The Aegean Islands of Lesvos, Limnos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, the Dodecanese Islands, the Cyclades and the island of Crete are all wine-producing areas.

“The Routes of the Olive Tree” is a cultural travelogue that was established through the initiative of the Messinia Chamber of Commerce in 1999. It was continued with routes to 22 Mediterranean and European olive oil-producing countries, while it was recognized as a World Cultural Route. It should be noted that “The Routes of the Olive Tree” was even able to open the closed Algerian-Morocco border.

It is a ramble that symbolically begins every year from Nestor’s Palace in Ancient Pylos, where clay tablets of Linear B script was discovered, with the ideogram of the olive tree, and continues by road around the Mediterranean to draw closer the people of the Mediterranean – the people of the olive tree. The olive tree that embraces them, and has fed them for centuries and today opens new communication links through the trails of its own culture and its own history.This is an endeavor to promote the culture of the olive tree and the timeless value of olive oil-based products for mankind internationally through cultural events and other activities inspired by the history of the olive tree and its future, which plans to create viable conditions for the development of the olive-oil producing regions.

“The Routes of the Olive Tree” was recognized by UNESCO in 2003 as the “2nd Cultural Route in the World” and by the Council of Europe in 2005 as the “Great European Cultural Route”.

Caving

Exploring caves in Greece is a unique adventure that offers explorers the opportunity to acquire and to enrich their knowledge with the essentials of geology, paleontology, anthropology, hydrology, topography, physics, biology and archeology. Greek caves are among the most beautiful in the world. Visitors are enthralled with the splendors of the geological formations, the subterranean waters, the colors that are out of this world and the sounds of the earth.

Many Greek caves have been explored and quite a few of these have been exploited and are now open to the public. There are still many caves that have not been fully explored, nor exploited. Tours of these caves are carried out but only under certain conditions, and of course with the necessary license.

In addition, the aspiring explorer of a non-exploited cave must realize that sightseeing in a cave is not an endeavor for just anyone, as special knowledge and nimbleness are required, as well as being in good physical condition. Special tools, clothing, gloves and light sources are needed, while at least three people must be in the group that enters the cave. Aspiring explorers must also be aware that caves constitute unique treasures of the land, as well as man’s civilization in quite a few instances. Therefore all visitors must respect the environment and not leave behind any litter or other traces of their presence.

Greek legislation does not permit private individuals to explore caves, unless they are members of a speleological society and have received permission from the Ephorate of Paleontology and Speleology of the Ministry of Culture.

Natural therapeutic springs are found in many different places in Greece, and the water from specific springs differs from ordinary water owing either to its high temperature, or to the presence of rare active components.

Supermarkets operate a continuous shift up to 9:00 p.m., while all the stores are closed on Sundays.

However, you will come across various stores (mini-market, wholesale cigarette stores, kiosks) that remain open almost day and night -even on Sundays- especially those situated in tourist regions.

Greece, birthplace of the Olympic Games, is ideal for participating in a sport or taking part in events or games (sports tourism). In the recent past the country has frequently organized many large sports/athletic events (world championships, Pan-European games, significant international tournaments, etc), with the crowning event being the 2004 Olympic Games that were held in Athens.

Greece offers an endless choice of land sports and activities: Mountaineering, climbing, trekking, mountain biking, spelunking (caving), canyoning, horseback riding, skiing, snowboarding, etc, are just a few of the sports that you can enjoy in Greece throughout the year as the climate is ideal for outdoor activities and sports.

Air Sports

The attempt of man to fly and slip the surly bonds of Earth is reflected in an absolute way in the adventurous sky sports. Like the legendary hero Icarus, sky sports enthousiasts in Greece get excited by the thrill of flying that offers them unique freedom in conjunction with spiritual tranquility and absolute concentration. This is an adventurous, authentic and quite romantic way to see the natural beauties of Greece from above, moving with the air currents as your guide.

Greece has the ideal climate for gliding, hang gliding and parapente (paragliding) flights, since the drier the climate of a region or a country is, the better it is for the development of the above-mentioned sports, which utilize the upward currents in the atmosphere to help the glider, the kite-glider or the parapenter to fly for quite a while. The period between April and October is the best time to fly.

Gliding (also known as soaring) is a sports activity in which the pilot seeks to maintain or gain altitude in unpowered flight (aided by the rising air) by flying unpowered aircrafts – the gliders or sailplanes. When soaring conditions are good enough, experienced pilots can fly hundreds of kilometres before returning to their home airports. Gliding has been active in Greece since 1935, pioneered by the Athens Gliding Club under the auspices of the Hellenic Aero Club, while one of the oldest and more experienced is the Tripolis Air Sports Center that has been operating since 1956.

In hang gliding, the pilot “hangs” (tied in a special harness) underneath the glider (a flying machine consisting of Dacron fabric and aluminium tubes of aircraft alloy), in such a way that his/ her body hangs in the air like a pendulum. By shifting his/ her weight in the appropriate way and by taking advantage of the rising air currents, the pilot follows the desired direction moving along three axes: longitudinal, transversal and vertical. Depending on the degree of training, the pilot can reach a height of 5,000 metres and stay in the air for up to 10 hours.

The sport started in the ‘70s in the USA and Australia where it became quickly popular. In the years to follow, it became known all over the world; in Greece hang gliding first appeared in 1978 and in 1999 was incorporated into the Hellenic Air Sports Federation (HASF). The sport today is very popular, and the result is that many Greek clubs are now involved in training any and all interested parties.

Parapente (paragliding) acquired its name from the French words “parachute” and “pente” (mountainside), since it was established in the mid 1980’s in France.

This sport requires good physical condition, excellent technical, psychological and metal alertness, perceptiveness, as well as knowledge of meteorology and aerodynamics which are taught by special instructors. Taking into account weather conditions, the parapente can reach a height of 4,000 m and can travel a distance of 2.0-2.5 km. Flights may last several hours, with speeds ranging from 48 to 60 kph. It was introduced in Greece in the early 1990’s mainly by persons involved in hang gliding -flying by kite-, which was already quite popular as a sport.

The first competitions took place in Plataies in the beginning of the 1990’s. A national championship has been organized and a national team has been created, while local competitions are being held in many regions throughout Greece, organized by the Hellenic Paragliding Committee, which is part of the Hellenic Air Sports Federation

Parapente (paragliding) flights take place in Attica (Kandili, Megara), Viotia (Plataies Thivon), as well as in many other regions in Greece, such as Konitsa, Agrinio, Arta, Ioannina, Edessa, Thessaloniki, Patras and Crete). Training requires around 4-5 weekends and includes flight theory, meteorology lessons and a practical exercise. However, when flying, the beginner will be accompanied by an instructor for a period of time.
