GUAM MUSEUM
Take a walk through Guam history by visiting the brand new permanent exhibit at the Senator Antonio M. Palomo Guam Museum and Chamorro Educational Facility in Hagåtña. This 6,200 square foot (576m²) gallery, located on the second floor of the Guam Museum, is the first of its kind on the island, featuring interactive, state-of-the-art technology and the most complete display of Guam’s history and culture in the Chamorro language to date.

The exhibit is designed to educate and entertain audiences of varying ages, backgrounds, and languages. Over 300 curated artifacts, thousands of images, multiple audios, and short films have been carefully pieced together in seven different galleries to guide visitors through the historical, Chamorro narrative of Guam. Descriptive panels are written in English and Chamorro and are accompanied by QR codes that translate the text into Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Korean.

In Galleries 1, 2 and 3, the journey through time begins in the Queuing Room. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling mural of “Fo’na Creating the People of Guam”, is a gallery filled with local artwork, in various mediums, depicting notable eras from Guam’s history, culture, and society. A video of Governor Eddie Calvo greets visitors as they make their way through the artwork toward the Orientation Theater. The short film shown in the mini theater transports you instantly into ancient Chamorro past, beginning with an animated creation story of Guam, and then transitions to live action, to show how the seafaring Chamorros came to settle on the island.

THE HISTORY OF THE GUAM MUSEUM
STARTING A MUSEUM.
The idea of creating a museum for Guam started many years ago. In 1926 the Guam Teachers Association, led by Dr. Ramon Sablan, a physician and teacher best known as the author of the “Guam Hymn,” asked residents and friends of Guam to start collecting their antiques and other artifacts for a museum that would protect their history and Chamorro culture. The editor of the Guam Recorder, one of the earliest publications printed and circulated on Guam, also called for the opening of a museum.

From 1924 to 1926, the Honolulu-based Bishop Museum employed amateur archeologist Hans Hornbostel to collect specimens from Guam and the northern Mariana Islands. Hornbostel shipped many artifacts—some over 3,000 years old—including pottery, fishhooks, latte stones (stone pillars) and even human skeletal remains to Hawaii. A Guam museum was seen as a way to ensure that these items could be returned and that the documents and objects important to the history and pre-history of the Chamorro people could be protected for future generations.

Established in 1932 when Governor Edmund Root authorized the use of a small building at the Paza de Espana in Hagatna, the Guam Museum was operated by the Guam-based American Legion Mid-Pacific Post 1, which opened the doors of the museum the following year. Hiram Elliott served as the first director and Joaquin T. Aguon as the first curator. Elliott appealed to the public to see “the most interesting and curious artifacts of the ancient Chamorro civilization.” Around this time the Bishop Museum returned a portion of the skeletal remains and artifacts originally collected by Hornbostel. The Legion operated the museum for three years, offering tours for transient visitors to Guam until 1936 when the museum was formally turned over to the naval government. The Navy then recruited Margaret Higgins, a naval officer’s wife, as the museum’s curator. From 1937 to 1941, Agueda Iglesias Johnston was the museum committee member in charge of the ancient Chamorro collections. From these simple beginnings the museum underwent several transformations.

The onset of World War II and the occupation of Guam by Japanese Imperial forces saw many of the artifacts removed from the museum and taken to Japan. The building itself was destroyed from heavy bombing during the American liberation of Guam in 1944. The postwar reconstruction of the island saw the recovery of some items from the museum’s collections, but no immediate plans to rebuild the museum itself.

Fish Eye Marine Park
Step onto our pier and out into spectacular Piti bay. Our 1000-foot long wooden boardwalk has covered rest areas where you can stop and watch the fish and enjoy the fresh ocean air. Down below tropical fish dart through the coral reefs. Blue waters in every shade of aqua highlight your jaunt out to Micronesia’s only undersea observatory. And in late afternoon, you can also marvel at the beauty of the western sunset.

Once at the observatory, the 360-degree upper deck allows you to enjoy see the ocean, the coral reefs, outer barrier reef and Guam’s majestic mountains. The air-conditioned inner vestibule has a selection of marine art. You can then walk down our spiral staircase to the lower deck. You are now safely beneath the sea and can view the ocean world from 24 windows (16 rectangular and 8 round). Here, dry and comfortable, you will see Piti’s amazing marine life and underwater coral gardens.

Watch as our divers attract some of the 200-plus species of fish that call our location home. Brilliant yellow butterflyfish, silvery jacks, curious snapper and odd trumpetfish all pass by the windows. This is one of the most important places on the island for fish to mate, hatch, grow in the protection of the corals and also get cleaned. Undersea cleaning stations can be seen from many of the observatory windows. Here small fish preen parasites from larger fish, an important act on the reef.

After watching the fascinating reef action, you can again enjoy the upper deck and stroll back at your leisure. Just across the street is our restaurant. Marvel at the natural setting and waterfall and pile your plate high with our buffet lunch. Set next to a cliff line and melodic waterfall, the island ambiance is soothing. Come visit our special Pacific gift shop full of crafts, T-shirts, photographer Tim Rock products and great souvenirs.

The friendly and welcoming people of Guam love to celebrate, and nowhere is that more visible than during our village fiestas (or gatherings) and at Chamorro Village in Hagåtña every Wednesday night, with both events featuring great food, live music and a vibrant display of local culture.

On the south-western spur of the Gissar range, in the Surkhandarya region, there is the world-famous Baysuntau range, which attracts adventurers with its huge caves, deep canyons and Alpine meadows. By the way, the huge fossilized dinosaur tracks were found here and the notorious Teshik-Tash cave, where the burial of a Neanderthal girl was discovered in the last century, is located there.

After crossing the hot steppes of Baysuntau, you find yourself in the fantastic, magical settlements, the names of which are so full of magic: Kafirun, Derbend, Padang, Rabat. Walnut groves are replaced by juniper forests, alpine meadows delight the eye with their bright green, spreading like a carpet on the slopes. The crystal water of the rivers breathes life into all living things around.

The locals cultivate the land in the old way – drawn by horses and plows. Here the houses are decorated with handmade carpets, bright suzanas, and local clothes and shoes with a variety of embroidered ornaments. Almost all houses have a tandoor – an oven, where bread is baked. Everything in this region is done manually. Blacksmiths masters of Surkhandarya are famed for their skills.

Tumon is undeniably the center of Guam’s fashion and shopping universe, with a numerous collection of boutiques within several stores including The DFS Guam Galleria, The Plaza along The Pleasure Island strip and the Tumon Sands Plaza.
World War II Sites
Guam is home to more than a dozen World War II sites. Each offers a unique perspective on the war. Many are accessible only on foot via hiking trails, so make sure you are prepared with suitable clothing, footwear, sunscreen, and water. And of course, a camera can be one of the best ways to capture history, allowing you to share this special part of your vacation for years to come.

Historical Background
Although Guam is now an island territory of the United States with a significant military presence, it has not always been an American stronghold. During World War II, its location about 900 miles north of the equator in the Western Pacific made Guam immeasurably valuable to both the Axis and Allied Powers. Guam played a pivotal role in the war and remains a great place to explore history firsthand.

The island has been a possession of the United States since 1898, except for a brief period beginning when the Japanese seized control in December 1941. In July 1944, U.S. Marines landed on both sides of Guam, and by early August their counterattacks had taken a serious toll on Japanese troops, solidifying the U.S. forces’ trek to victory.

Overview of Diverse Sites
History buffs and novices alike could spend days or even weeks delving into Guam’s past as a crucial battleground in World War II.

Dive to explore underwater shipwrecks, or walk a grassy hillside to discover intact weapons shelters. Visit solemn memorials to Japanese and U.S. soldiers. Pay your respects at the sites of the Tinta and Faha massacre that claimed the lives of nearly 50 Chamorro men and women. Guam is also home to the only National Park Service facility dedicated to the Pacific Theater of World War II.

Please be aware, there are two facilities (Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Station Historic Sites) that can only be toured with valid military identification or through a sponsor.

July 21 is Liberation Day, but the whole month is marked with parades, fireworks, and other commemorative events. Guam crowns a Liberation Queen, and families and friends get together to enjoy festive spectacles around the island and to share in the spirit of remembrance.

On December 8, 1941, almost simultaneous with the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese bombers launched a series of air raids on Guam. Guam’s small forces were outmatched, and the island was surrendered to the Japanese after two days.

The occupation was marked by close controls on access to media, transportation, and food. Suspected supporters of an underground insurgency were subject to persecution including torture.

In early 1944, the threat of an American invasion loomed and thousands of Chamorros were marched to concentration camps in the central and southern jungles of the island.

The Americans retook Guam beginning with the landing of 55,000 troops on the island’s beaches on July 21, followed by a three-week march to Ritidian Point in the north. Nearly 25,000 American and Japanese troops lost their lives in the fighting.

This now-peaceful park was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the closing days of World War II. This was the site of the last Japanese garrison under the command of General Obata. In a desperate fight with American forces in 1944, General Obata was killed trying to maintain control of Guam. The park was set aside in memory of the more than half million Japanese soldiers as well as American soldiers and local people who lost their lives in the Pacific War between 1941 and 1945. It symbolizes the determination of the two nations to promote friendship and seek world peace. A 15 meter-high tower is a representation of hands praying for eternal peace.

Hikers will need a guide to lead them through the thick jun- gle atop Nimitz Hill. A steep climb down a ledge ends with an impressive 100-foot drop into a rocky pool. This sanctuary is a sample of Guam’s beauty in the wild.

Talofofo
The municipality of Talofofo is located in south-central Guam on the eastern coast of the island. The area extends from the shore and deep into the interior valleys along the Ugum and Talofofo Rivers. The name of the ancient village of Talofofo probably has its origin from the phrase “entalo’ i fe’fo’,” which means “between the cliffs,” or even from the word “fo’fo’,” which means a bubbling stream.

Archeologists believe most of the pre-Spanish era inhabitants lived in settlements along the Ugum and Talofofo Rivers. Artifacts in the Talofofo Caves indicate these sites were occupied and used as well, if only seasonally or for short periods at a time.

After the Spanish reducción of the late 1600s which displaced the Chamorro natives from the northern villages and the other Mariana Islands, the residents of Talofofo were presumably shifted to Inarajan and the main village was abandoned.

Years before the first American administration of Guam in the early 1900s, people had already been moving back into the Talofofo area to farm and hunt. Small plantations had been set up along the valley of the Talofofo River. Latte sites, however, still were visible in different parts of the valley, but were largely avoided. In 1912, a chapel supposedly was built close to the mouth of the Talofofo River. By 1918, the Naval governor William Gilmer appointed a commissioner for Talofofo, and the residents decided to move their village up to the plateau.

Although Talofofo was previously considered part of Inarajan by January 1931, Inarajan was divided into two districts. Talofofo was designated north of the Talofofo, Ugum, As Mulato and Atate Rivers, while the district of Inarajan was to the south. However, the area remained largely unoccupied, with few houses, and used mostly as ranch land.

During World War II, Talofofo Bay was one of the landing points for the invading Japanese forces on 10 December 1941, although the original landing site was supposed to be Ylig Bay. By 1944, the Japanese had begun to fortify the island in anticipation of the arrival of American forces, and built gun placements and pillboxes in the cliffs near the bay.

After the war, the American military government built the new community of Talofofo in the hills where it now stands.

Tourist attractions in Talofofo include the jungle riverboat cruise which transports visitors inland from Talofofo Bay to a cultural village display and latte site. The inland hills are also popular for hiking and off-roading activities.

Sumay
Sumay’s history dates before the Spanish colonial period, although not much is known about its pre-contact history. When the Spanish proclaimed Guam as theirs, Sumay’s chieftain was supposedly among those who held strong opposition to the Spanish colonizers, although the Spanish government eventually gained control. Sumay, like other villages, was centered around the Catholic church.

The Spaniards kept a settlement at Sumay, and its easy access to San Luis de Apra Harbor made it a favorite anchorage town for whalers and other sailors. Sumay grew into a thriving little port town in the 1800s.

Much of the naval shipping operations were situated along this coastal village when the American government took over. The Trans-Pacific Cable Company anchored its station at Sumay in 1903, linking Guam with both Asia and the United States. Pan American Airways landed its China Clipper at Sumay in 1935, and built Guam’s first hotel there.

Because military shipping and communications centered around Sumay, it was one of the first areas to be bombed when the Japanese attacked on December 8, 1941. The people of Sumay fled and scattered inland to their small ranches in the jungles.

After World War II was over the Navy did not allow the Sumay residents to reclaim their home, saying they needed the property for U.S. Naval Base, Guam. The former Sumay residents were eventually relocated to the newly created village of Santa Rita.

In order to protect Spain’s interests in Guam and its Pacific trade routes, several fortifications were constructed to defend the island. Beginning with the first stockade in Hagåtña in 1671 and ending with the semi-reductos (half-enclosed parapets) in 1835, the Spanish administration built fourteen fortifications of various types and dimensions on Guam. Most of these defensive structures were open batteries designed for cannons to fire through embrasures. Six fortifications were constructed in the village of Hagåtña. Four fortifications were built to protect Umatac Bay. Three fortifications were built to defend Apra Harbor and one unnamed battery was assembled in Merizo to protect the anchorage outside the village.

Historic accounts from the early Spanish era mention that the village of Haputo (sometimes spelled Apoto) was burned in 1678 by Spanish soldiers. In 1680 the surviving residents of Haputo and all the other northern villages of Guam were forced to relocate to Hagåtña.

Although the village was abandoned, it still was recognized by name and located on early European maps of Guam.

If the daytime scene isn’t convincing enough, the sunsets will take your breath away. Shades of orange and pink contrast against the deepening shade of the ocean to create the perfect ambiance for a romantic walk on the beach.

Guam’s world-renowned beaches are famous for the perfect temperature of the waters. It isn’t too hot or too cold. You can comfortably enjoy swimming in the cool waters as you take in the gorgeous view of palm trees and ocean.

It is no question that Guam’s waters are riddled with an active sea life. If you want a deeper experience of life beyond Guam’s beaches, consider venturing into the world of dolphins. Dolphin watching is a popular activity on Guam. A boat will take you along the currents of the ocean to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. The trip out to dolphin watching sites only takes a few minutes and during this time, you can take in the view of the breathtaking horizon.

Several outfits bring guests out on dolphin watching adventures. If you are in the mood to bask in the glory of these soulful animals, this is one of many boats that can take you to see these graceful creatures.
Dolphins are a gentle species so it’s safe to bring children along too. Your kids will love to see the pods of dolphins glide through the waters.

Not many people can say they’ve had the opportunity to dolphin watch out on Guam waters. It’s a great experience and you will be taking unforgettable memories away with you.

Guam’s tropical weather provides an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the various waterparks the island has to offer. Grab your sunscreen and swim gear and get ready to explore the adventures each waterpark has in store.

Tarza Waterpark has the largest array of waterslides. Depending on how brave you are, you can choose from a slide with a 50-foot drop to other less gutsy options like the MasterBlaster black. Onward Waterpark is another waterpark that offers a variety of activities. The Manta is a popular ride that takes passengers, both solo and in groups, back and forth on a 50 foot slide. As your heart sinks into your stomach, the rush of the ride convinces you to do it over and over again.

One of the things these two parks have in common is their lazy river. It is the perfect place to sunbathe or to simply sit back and relax on your inner tube as the water pulls you along the river. Pacific Islands Club also has a lazy river to lounge around in the sun. One thing that sets PIC apart from the other two parks is that it also has a large river for kayaking.

Whether you are in the mood for adventure or just in the mood to relax, waterparks are always a fun option when you vacation on the beautiful island of Guam.

Waterfalls
A paradise island would be incomplete without a cascading waterfall or two, and Guam has dozens to explore. While some waterfall sites such as Talofofo Falls have been developed for visitors, the vast majority of the island’s natural waterfalls are very much in the pristine condition today as they were when the Ancient Chamorro people inhabited the island.

Guam has some of the most stunning beaches you might ever see but the island’s natural beauty extends beyond white sand beaches and sparkling ocean waters. Set aside some time to explore Guam’s natural spaces and learn about the island’s culture and wildlife.

Tarzan Falls
Ranked by travelers on TripAdvisor as Guam’s best waterfall, Tarzan Falls is a natural stunner that makes for an easy half-day activity. The trail can be quite muddy and tricky to navigate after the rain, but the panoramic view of the falls from the bottom of the trail is worth the effort.

Priests Pools
Though technically not a waterfall, Priest’s Pools is the site of eight cascading infinity pools that are named after the Spanish-era priests who often visited to bathe and refresh in the late 1600s. It’s an easy walk to reach the top pool, although climbing down to explore all of the pools will require some aide for little ones.

San Carlos Falls
The pristine San Carlos Falls and Swim Hole are quintessential hidden gems that are tucked away in the lush foliage of central Guam. This hike is rated difficult by local hiking experts and it is recommended that inexperienced and novice hikers hike with an experienced guide such as the Guam Boonie Stompers group.

Guam Boonie Stompers
One of the safest and enjoyable ways to see many of Guam’s hidden natural gems is to go boonie stomping – what islanders call hiking – with an experienced guide or with a group such as the Guam Boonie Stompers. Every Saturday morning, Guam Boonie Stompers leads groups to remote beaches, snorkeling sites, waterfalls, mountains, caves, and cultural and historical sites.
