DIVING
With excellent year-round visibility, some of the healthiest coral reefs in the world and dozens of WWII ship and plane wrecks, including the world’s only diveable aircraft carrier, the flagship of the Japanese World War II Armada, and an amazingly intact B-26 bomber in only 5 foot depth, just to name a few of the discovered wrecks, the Marshall Islands offers unparalleled wreck diving and coral sightseeing throughout. Divers can enjoy steep drop-offs, coral pinnacles, channels, and reef points. Certain dive spots are abundant with fast moving pelagic schools, while others boast rich varieties of hard or soft coral.

MAJURO
Majuro is the most accessible dive site in the Marshall Islands. An array of dive types can be enjoyed: walls/dropoffs, lagoon pinnacles, and channels. Diving in Majuro, one is most likely to find schools of pelagic and inshore fish, various sharks, rays, turtles, and a variety of coral including fan and table coral.

FISHING
With its 29 coral atolls spread out over 750,000 square miles of tropical Pacific Ocean, the Marshall Islands is literally one of the fishiest countries on earth! Over 1,000 species of fish (860 inshore/reef, 7 freshwater/brackish, 67 open water and 125 deep sea fish) offer an incredible array of fishing opportunities within the lagoons, on the reef flats, and in the open ocean. Anglers can enjoy flyfishing, jigging and bottom fishing, trolling, casting/whipping, and more.

Fishing Areas All 29 atolls in the Marshall Islands offer excellent fishing. From the capital, Majuro Atoll, anglers can easily venture out to neighboring Arno atoll by boat or to other atolls via Air Marshall Islands, the domestic carrier. Fishing Season Wind and sea conditions are most favorable during the May-October period.

CULTURE
Learn more about Marshallese tradition and history at the Alele Museum, which features authentic tools and artifacts, WWII relics, 19th century photographs of the Marshall Islands from the Joachim deBrum collection and more. The Peace Park Memorial constructed by the Japanese government commemorates the soldiers who fought and died in the Pacific during WWII. And the 1918 Typhoon Monument commemorates the victims of a rare typhoon in the Marshall Islands and pays homage to the Japanese Emperor for his generous contribution of private funds for rebuilding Majuro.

Learn about Marshallese canoe construction and how ancient Marshallese navigators “saw” islands by feeling the waves beneath them at the Waan Aelon in Majol canoe house, where you’ll find canoe builders hard at work and ready to guide you on a lagoon cruise aboard these “Canoes of the Marshall Islands.”

The Marshallese have a prodigious amount of knowledge and skills ranging from traditional medicine and massage, astronomy and social order, dendrology and horticulture to non-instrument navigation and seafaring. Among these is the skill which symbolizes all of the great seafaring nations: canoe building, a technology which even today has received the admiration of modern day sailors. Even today’s aerodynamic engineers are in awe of the design technology of the outrigger canoes still sailing today. These are the designs which plied the waves and have evolved through and survived for 50 generations.

RRE CLAM FARM
This clam holding and raising facility on Majuro features a number of different species and sizes of clams (for the aquarium market).

LAURA BEACH PARK
Located at the western end of Majuro is Laura Beach Park, a popular picnic site. Here you’ll find a sandy beach, picnic areas, and fresh water shower.

THREE BAG ISLAND KAYAKERS
Camp out overnight or spend the day at this secluded coral island, across the lagoon. Kayak, snorkel, barbecue or just hang out!

ENEKO ESCAPE
Go on a day trip or an overnight to this small island 7 miles across the lagoon from Majuro, and experience the outer islands feeling within easy access of civilization.

The first real economic mainstay of most Pacific Islanders, including Marshallese, was copra production (copra is the dried out meat of coconuts). Today, copra production remains an important source of income for locals and at the Tobolar Copra Processing Plant, you can see copra made into coconut oil, soaps, body oil, coconut feed, and even state of the art diesel fuel substitute.

GEOLOGICAL HISTORY
The Marshall Islands first emerged 70 million years ago when volcanic cores erupted at presently extinct hotspots south of the equator. Around 40 million years ago, while the Pacific plate continued to move in a northwesterly direction, the volcanoes began to subside. The islands were initially high, volcanic islands, but over the course of the ensuing 40 million years, they slowly sank back into the ocean from which they came, propelled by their own weight. Microscopic organisms called polyps, which thrive in warm waters with high salinity, salvaged the remaining rim of what was once a volcano to the extent that, with botanical seeds transported by birds and ocean currents, 3,000 years ago small islets had taken form on the reefs, capable of sustaining life. These islets formed circular rings encircling sheltered lagoons, namely our beautiful atolls we today can share with visitors.

PACIFIC COLONIZATION
The predominant theory on the colonization of the Pacific postulates that the initial settlers moved out of Southeast Asia, notably Southeast China and Formosa approximately 5,000 years ago. Over hundreds of years, and with successive advancements in maritime and agricultural technology, migration progressed southeastward along the northern coast of what is now New Guinea, then southeast into what are now the Melanesian island groups of Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia, and sometime between 2,000 to 3,000 years ago, into the Central Pacific: Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and probably Eastern Micronesia. According to linguists, the migrants who first moved out of Southeast Asia spoke in the Austronesian language family and today, nearly all languages in the Pacific are categorized as Austronesian. Over the last several decades, successive developments in different fields such as archaeology, linguistics and biology have shaped, strengthened and won general consensus on this theory.

UNIQUE CULTURAL SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGIES
Over the last 2,000 or so years, Marshallese have developed, refined and perfected a number of unique skills and technologies, all of which illustrated their keen adaptation to the atoll and oceanic environment.

Fishing technology, for instance, developed into one with very high specialization. The wide range of fishing environments coupled with the great variation in fish species led to a diverse and highly specialized range of fishing techniques. Few other cultures in the world have developed as many fishing techniques and styles as the Marshallese.

Marshallese canoes, or wa, which range from small rowing canoes to massive high-speed voyaging canoes have amazed Westerners from Otto Von Kotzebue, who visited the Marshalls in the early 1800s, to modern day world-class sailing enthusiasts. Marshallese canoes are recognized and revered throughout the Pacific for their advanced technical refinements, including the asymmetric hull, the lee platform, and the pivoting midship mast.

Traditional Marshallese navigational skills were equally sophisticated. When the initial settlers of the Marshalls arrived, they were already equipped with complex navigational skills- otherwise, they could not have found their way to these low-lying islands. As time progressed, these skills were only sharpened. Ultimately, Marshallese learned to literally read nature’s faint and subtle signs. Stars, clouds, waves, currents, winds, birds, and even the color of the ocean, bore recognizable clues which were easily read by trained navigators. These advancements in both maritime knowledge and canoe design allowed Marshallese to commonly sail as far as Enenkio (Wake Island) to the north, Pohnpei to the west and Kiribati to the south.

While all islanders in the Pacific possessed some sort of navigational technology, Marshallese developed perhaps the most advanced methods of teaching this skill. Young apprentices spent much of their training feeling the waves beneath them as they lied on their backs in the ocean, in the process gaining the skill of seeing the island causing that wave pattern beneath them. In addition, navigational stick charts of various size and shape were devised to depicted complex wave and wind patterns in relation to individual islands, atolls and atoll groups. With these charts, elders were able to more easily explain and teach complex navigational concepts such as wave refraction and swell pattern identification.

The Marshall Islands consist of two archipelagic island chains of 30 atolls and 1,152 islands, which form two parallel groups—the “Ratak” (sunrise) chain and the “Ralik” (sunset) chain. The Marshalls are located in the North Pacific Ocean and share maritime boundaries with Micronesia and Kiribati. Two-thirds of the nation’s population lives in the capital of Majuro and the settlement of Ebeye. The outer islands are sparsely populated due to lack of employment opportunities and economic development.

The country is located about one-half of the way from Hawaii to Papua New Guinea. The archipelago includes the atolls of Bikini, Enewetak, Kwajalein, Majuro, Rongelap, and Utirik.

The total area of the islands is equal to the size of the City of Washington, DC. The largest atoll with a land area of 6 square miles (16 km2) is Kwajalein.[1] The terrain consists of low coral limestone and sand islands. Natural resources include coconut products, marine products, and deep seabed minerals. Current environmental issues are inadequate supplies of potable water; pollution of Majuro lagoon from household waste and discharges from fishing vessels.

Bikini and Enewetak are former US nuclear test sites; Kwajalein, the famous World War II battleground, is now used as a US missile test range; the island city of Ebeye is the second largest settlement in the Marshall Islands, after the capital of Majuro, and one of the most densely populated locations in the Pacific.

Climate
Tropical; hot and humid with a Koeppen-Geiger classification of Af.[3] The wet season lasts from May to November and the islands border the typhoon belt. Typhoons do pose an infrequent threat from July to mid November.[3]

Due to their low elevation, the Marshall Islands are threatened by the potential effects of sea level rise.[4] According to the President of Nauru, the Marshall Islands are the most endangered nation on Earth due to flooding from climate change.

Majuro
Majuro is the main island of the Marshall Islands. Here you can find restaurants, cinema, bank, post office, diving- and fishing tour operators, accommodation and one of the Islands’ two airports. You can even find nightclubs and a bowling alley. You will not be bored on Majuro.

Bikini Atoll
There are great opportunities for diving and snorkeling in the blue waves around the Marshall Islands. But there are not just beautiful fish and corals to look at. The U.S. has used selected areas around the Marshall Islands for nuclear testing in the postwar period. You can still find remains of the USS Saratogaon on the seabed off the Bikini Atoll as an eternal memory of the devastation the blasts caused. It is reportedly the only aircraft carrier wreck in the world that can be explored with regular sports diving equipment.

The Bikini Atoll is on the UNESCO world heritage list because it represents the dawn of the nuclear age. But the island is also known for something more “uplifting” – the two-piece swimsuit the “bikini” is named after the island.
