Flora & Fauna
Montserrat boasts a wide variety of plants and wildlife, several of which can be found nowhere else in the world. An experienced trail guide will be able to point out many of these unique species to you. Depending on your location and the trail’s elevation, you will encounter many different forest types, from drier and scrubbier vegetation in the lowlands to wet tropical rain forest at higher elevations. The tops of the tallest peaks, such as the challenging Katy Hill, are home to rare elfin woodland.

There are numerous orchid species in Montserrat, including one found nowhere else in the world – Epidendrum Montserratense. Many species of trees have long been a source of traditional value to Montserratians including the national tree (“Hairy Mango”), national flower (Heliconia), banana, cassava, cocoa, mammy apple, and many others.

Keep an eye and ear out for one of the 100+ bird species found in Montserrat, including humming birds, the forest thrush, or the national bird – the critically endangered Montserrat Oriole. Along the ground or in the trees, you might be fortunate to see one of our thirteen species of reptiles and amphibians, such as the Mountain Chicken (the world’s second-largest frog), the harmless Montserrat black snake, tree frog, Dwarf Gecko, or perhaps the highly elusive Galliwasp Lizard. Montserrat is also home to ten species of native bats, though you are not likely to encounter any of these in the daytime!

There are hundreds of species of insects around, including many colourful butterflies and beetles. Generally hikers are not bothered by insects, but the occasional mosquito, ant, or gnat can be warded off with insect repellent.

Art & Craft in Montserrat
Montserrat’s history and culture is proudly reflected in its rich tapestry of art and craft. This can be seen in our national wear that features the madras fabric and is symbolic of our African and Irish heritage. Local artisans create amazing pieces from the calabash fruit and other materials, while our painters and sculptors are inspired by nature and the magnificent views available from almost anywhere on the island.

Cuisine of Montserrat
There are those culinary adventures which can only be found off the beaten track, tucked away in tiny unassuming corners of uncommon places. So it is with Montserrat’s indigenous cuisine and fusion dishes. There’s so much to sample in just 39 ½ square miles.

Montserrat’s cuisine is a blend of different culinary traditions ranging from local to international. Foods are flavourful and colourful. Choose from take-aways and casual dining at some of the local eateries or enjoy fine dining at some of the cozy full-service restaurants.

WEDDING & ROMANCE IN MONTSERRAT
FOREVER BEGINS IN MONTSERRAT
Getting married is one of the most important and memorable moments of your life, so celebrate your special day in an unforgettable destination. From magnificent black sand beaches to the breathtaking mountainous views of the Soufrière Hills volcano, our island is tailor-made for you to say “I Do!”

For non- nationals wishing to get married in Montserrat, a minimum stay of 3 working days in the country is required before an application can be made to obtain a special or Governor’s Marriage License. Applications for the license are made through the Office of the Deputy Governor.

Hiking is one of the most popular recreational activities in Montserrat. There are numerous foot paths that crisscross the island, many of which have been in use for centuries by persons seeking access to distant villages and agricultural land. There is opportunity for hikes of varying difficulty, length, and scenery.

Big River
Duration: 1.5 hours one-way
Distance: 0.7 miles
This is a strenuous section of trail connecting the agricultural lands at Upper Blakes to a narrow upland saddle. It twists, ascends and descends several times, crossing and then rising up the rocky ghaut of Big River before a steep ascent to the eastern ridge approach to Katy Hill.

Blackwood Allen
Duration: 2 hours one-way
Distance: 1.2 miles
This trail follows a series of steep climbs and descents through a lush portion of the Centre hills, including a formerly active agricultural village known as Underwood. There are two sections, east and west. Both are often done together, or you can shorten the journey by exiting the forest via the Underwood trail which bisects the eastern and western portions of the Blackwood Allen near the half-way point.

Dry Waterfall
Duration: 3 hours round trip
Distance: 1.2 miles
This trail is often wet and slippery with dramatic cliffs rising on either side. There are several moderate gullies to cross, and some of the trail climbs directly through the rocky bed of Soldier Ghaut. The actual waterfall is about 100 feet high, but only runs in the rainy season or after heavy rainfall. It is still worth the hike even when the weather has been dry! The return journey retraces the same path by which you entered.

Duberry-Cassava
Duration: 45 minutes one-way
Distance: 0.5 miles
This can be done on its own or serve as connector between The Cot and the Oriole Walkway trails. It is a short hike with mostly gentle slopes through the dry forest. There is a marked picnic area in a clearing in the forest near to the remnants of the arrowroot factory and not far from the southern end of the trail.

Hope Ridge Trail
Duration: 5 hours
Distance: Depends on where you finish Level
One has three options from which to start and end this hiking trail. You can start at MVO, The Cot, or Oriole Walkway. This trail takes you into the heart of the Centre hills. It takes you to Elfin Forest at Baker Hill Mountain. Cloud forest, elevations of 2300ft, nice panoramic views, prime forest vegetation. Only for fit Avid hikers.

Jackboy Hill
Many people make the return journey up and down Jack Boy Hill, however those seeking a longer and even more strenuous experience may also continue on from the summit to Katy Hill and points beyond.

Jackboy Hill Visitor Centre
Duration: 2 1/2 hours
Distance: 0.8 miles
The trail begins just above the Jack Boy Hill Visitor Centre and rises steeply up the western slope of Jack Boy Hill. There are several opportunities to look towards the Tar River Valley in the southeast. From the summit, unless you are planning to continue on to Katy Hill, turn and retrace your steps along the same path that you ascended.

Katy Hill South
Duration: 3.5 hrs one-way
Distance: 1.6 miles
Connecting Barzeys to the Blackwood Allen trail, this offers a short hike through former agricultural lands and enters the dense forest. Although affording mostly modest slopes, there are a couple of sections that can get slippery. At the junction with the Blackwood Allen trail turn and retrace your steps along the same path that you ascended unless you plan to continue on the Blackwood Allen and end your hike elsewhere. Enjoy panoramic views of Montserrat’s eastern regions.

Katy Hill Trail System
Duration: Duration and level depends on where you start or wish to end hike
This is a trail system where you will definitely need a guide, as the trail becomes quickly overgrown due to almost constant moisture and it is easy to lose one’s way. Note also that it is easy to become lost or disoriented high up in the fog that is often present at the summit. Hikers should be prepared for a very strenuous experience, as well as mud and moisture in the Katy Hill cloud forest. Be sure to pack snacks and plenty of water to keep your energy up. There are several route options to choose from.

Oriole Walkway
Duration: 2 hours one-way
Distance: 1.3 miles
This is the most popular hiking trail in Montserrat. With a guide, you are very likely to see and/or hear the national bird from this trail. From either direction, the trail ascends gently then steeply to the top of Lawyer’s Mountain. A short spur to a clearing at the highest point of the trail (1287 ft above sea level) affords breathtaking views of the island to the north and south.

Rendezvous Beach
Duration: 2 hours round trip
Distance: 1.3 miles
Take a modest hike to Rendezvous Bay, where wonderful swimming and snorkeling opportunities await you at Montserrat’s only white-sand beach. Use the same trail to go and return, which originates behind the concrete block company in Little Bay and climbs steeply over a saddle, descending steeply into the Rendezvous Valley and taking you directly to the beach. There are no facilities at the beach, just you and nature. Snorkeling gear can be rented from Scuba Montserrat in Little Bay. Water, a hat and sunscreen are advised, as there is very little tree cover. Although this is a moderate hike, there are some dangerous parts and you should take extra precautions.

The Cot Duration
Duration: 1.5 hours one-way
Distance: 1.6 miles
The trail begins just south of the National Trust on an unpaved road heading uphill. The path winds up a gentle slope broken occasionally by small farms. From the top follow the arrow and trail northwards through ferns and fruit trees. You will then descend to a point where you can either rejoin the main road at Runaway Ghaut or a short walk southward to the National Trust.

Underwood
Duration: 45 minutes
Distance: 1.2 miles

Upper Blakes to Katy Hill North
Duration: 3 hours one-way
Distance: 1 mile
From Baker Hill, the first part of this trail rises moderately, traversing dense forest. Farther along to the east approaching Katy Hill, the terrain becomes steeper and more uneven with a very challenging final ascent to Katy Hill’s northern summit.

There’s something sexy about an ebony sand beach that’s not always easy to describe. All but one of Montserrat’s beaches boast an unusual colour palette ranging from sparkling black to different shades of gray. Now…picture yourself on one of these beaches with the gentle waves lapping at your feet.

FOX’S BAY
A gorgeous, long stretch of beach that starts just beyond Isle’s Bay to the north up to Bransby Point in the south. At one end, you can see Old Towne in the distance, and at the other, the Plymouth pier. Even though this beach borders (but is outside of) the Exclusion Zone, it’s still a favourite for many.

ISLE’S BAY
Formerly a popular spot where fishermen from Salem and Cork Hill came to catch and sell fish, it is ideal for swimming. Shaded seating also makes it a good group picnic spot. Grab a specialty pizza or order the beer battered fish ’n chips at Isle’s Bay Beach Bar before you go. A perfect end to a wonderful day.

LIME KILN
This small beach is good for shore dives and sea turtle watching. The walk thru the picnic area under the almond trees to approach the beach is just as breathtaking.

LITTLE BAY
Great for stand-up paddle (SUP), kayaking and snorkeling and the added bonus of being just next to the always lively Marine Village, with its restaurants and bars.

NEW BEACH
As its name suggests this beach was newly created as a result of the volcanic activity near Bottomless Ghaut – Nature in all her awesome glory! Getting to it is a bit of an adventure, as you’d have to climb down a rocky slope leading to the beach. Currents are usually strong here so it’s not the best swimming option.

RENDEZVOUS BEACH
This is the ivory to the other beaches’ ebony – Montserrat’s only white sand beach. It’s accessible by kayak or a short hike from Little Bay, but it’s so worth it. Plentiful schools of fish and a vibrant reef make here a fun time for snorkelers, or if you’re not that inclined, a beach picnic or chilling out with your favourite book is just as enjoyable.

WOODLANDS
Although this is a fairly large stretch of beach, it’s still an intimate setting where you can chill out by yourself or with someone special. The reef makes for great swimming and snorkeling – but the currents can be strong at times, so don’t venture out too far, especially if you’re not a good swimmer. The sea turtles like it here too and they come to nest between May and December. There are two barbecue grills at the facilities overlooking the beach, so you can have a fun-filled day with the entire family.

Montserrat’s bar scene can be anyway you’d like it to be. Enjoy a quiet drink with friends, where you can chat the night away or try to solve the world’s problems. Or groove to the pulsating rhythms of soca, reggae, dance hall or merengue until the wee hours of the morning.

WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN
Each village has its own character, from the always lively Marine Village in Little Bay, to Salem (known for its bush rum), St John’s, which has a more traditional and rustic feel, St Peter’s (a place for the people), Cudjoe Head, steeped in history and Davy Hill, where the bars and night spots have a more Latin vibe.

MONTSERRAT IDOL
The Montserrat Idol Competition started in 2011 by Tom Walker, owner of Soca Cabana Bar in Little Bay. This fun-filled event gives residents the opportunity to showcase their singing talent and so, every Saturday night from the third week of January until the first week of April, the Soca Cabana Bar comes alive for the showdown. Both locals and visitors look forward to the weekly meet-up where they too secretly judge their favourite artiste. Weekly eliminations leaving the cream of the crop to vie for the title of Montserrat Idol during the Grand Finale at the Montserrat Cultural Centre!

THE SOUFRIÈRE HILLS VOLCANO
The Soufrière Hills Volcano is a composite volcano characterised by dome-building eruptions. Its last major eruption, prior to the current one, is thought to have been about 400 years ago. The current eruption began in 1995 and continues to the present day. Two-thirds of the island was rendered uninhabitable, with over 50% of the population opting to emigrate to the UK, US and Canada. Enjoy breathtaking views of the summit from safe vantage points, cloud cover permitting.

PLYMOUTH
The deserted town of Plymouth is Montserrat’s star attraction – the only volcanic-buried town in the Americas. Its ghost town feel is attributed to its eerie quiet, the absence of animals and birds, the subtle usurping of the town by the volcanic ash, even in its resting phase. Most poignant are the belongings left behind: in businesses – typewriters, invoices and stationery; in homes – aging toys, cradles, books, clothing.

MONTSERRAT VOLCANO OBSERVATORY (MVO)
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is responsible for scientific monitoring of the Soufrière Hills Volcano. It was established in response to the current volcanic eruption which began in July 1995. A team of experienced scientists and technicians continually monitor the volcano using a variety of techniques, including seismology, ground deformation and gas emissions. A 20 minute video is shown about the eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano.

JACK BOY HILL
Jack Boy Hill serves as the vantage point for panoramic viewing of the volcano, the hidden town of Trants, including what remains of the island’s old airport, and the Atlantic Ocean. Here the landscape is at its grittiest and harshest. An on-site telescope allows you to examine it close up. Although small, the park’s bountiful bougainvillea and seating throughout give it a romantic feel. Make a day of it by planning a picnic or a serenade.

CENTRE HILLS
The Centre Hills forest is home to several globally endangered bird, reptile and plant species. In some cases, the entire population can only be found within this small ecological system. Species near extinction include the Montserrat Oriole, Montserrat Galliwasp, the Mountain Chicken, the Forest Thrush and two bat species – the Yellow-shouldered Bat and White-lined Bat. Eight out of the nine major hiking trails are found in the Centre Hills.

HILLTOP COFFEE HOUSE AND WELCOME CENTRE
If you ever wondered about the pop music scene in the ‘80s, this is a great place to get some interesting stories. So many of the iconic albums from that era were recorded right here in Montserrat at the famed Air Studios. View memorabilia of the artistes like The Police, Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and Montserrat’s national hero, Arrow, who sang Hot! Hot! Hot! Stop by and spend some time with David Lea over some good coffee or a cold fruit drink. Waffle Saturdays are always a treat!

BAT CAVE
From Little Bay, you can either kayak or take a 30 to 50 minute hilly hike to discover the island’s only white sand beach. There is rich coral and marine life that make for good snorkeling. From here, with a tour guide, you can access our colony of Antillean fruit-eating bats. Thousands of bats are on display, divided into two caves: one with females with their young, the other with males. Sounds like a romantic date!

THE MONTSERRAT NATIONAL TRUST
The Montserrat National Trust located in Salem is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the island’s historical sites and natural environment. It houses a café, gift shop, history centre and library and is home to the island’s botanical garden, which is dedicated to conserving indigenous plants and trees. It also features a nursery, orchid house and medicinal garden.

GARIBALDI HILL
One of the most breathtaking and dramatic views of the Soufriere Hills Volcano and Plymouth is from atop Garibaldi Hill. From the other side of this high perch you can see Isle’s Bay and Old Road Bay, as well as Old Towne and Salem. Don’t forget your camera!

BRANSBY POINT
The earliest records that show the existence of a gun battery at Bransby Point were from 1693. Located northwest of the capital, Plymouth, it was destroyed by the French in 1712 in one of their many skirmishes with the British – common at that time in the Caribbean. When Montserrat was restored to Britain in 1783, the French spiked the cannons and destroyed the guardhouse. The battery was never reactivated, but it was restored 200 years later in 1983, only to be damaged again in the volcanic eruptions in 1995 and 1997. Bound on either side by Fox’s Bay and Barton Bay, Bransby Point provides amazing views of Old Towne to the north and Soufrière Hills Volcano and Plymouth to the south.

NATIONAL MUSEUM
Located in Little Bay within walking distance from the Ferry Terminal, the Montserrat National Museum displays artefacts and exhibits on the island’s history and culture from the pre-Columbian era to modern day.

HIKE TO THE PETROGLYPHS
The most amazing thing happened in 2016. Hikers on the Soldier Ghaut Trail discovered Petroglyphs credited to the first known people on Montserrat, the Amerindians. These markings in the rock are thought by archaeologists to be between 1000 and 1500 years old. They are a must see!

RUNAWAY GHAUT
Montserrat has some of the purest water you can hope to find anywhere. Make a stop at Runaway Ghaut and take a drink of the natural spring water to form that unbroken bond with the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. Also enjoy a short 10-minute hike to explore the flora and fauna, just beyond the seats. Rent a car or ask your taxi driver to make sure you get to live the legend.

DAY OF DISCOVERY
This tour lasts 6-7 hours, and it is a fabulous way to see Montserrat for a day or to begin your holiday. In addition to the regular guided tour, your guide will show you other points of interest at your request. The tour includes admission to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory and the National Museum, complimentary drinks and door to door service from your accommodations.

Bird & Turtle Watching
Despite its small size, Montserrat has a wide variety of bird habitats, which increases the range of species found on the island. The Centre Hills are of significant global importance and is one of the best places to go birdwatching in the Eastern Caribbean. Heading the winged cast of characters is the Montserrat Oriole, our national bird, made up by a range of hummingbirds, bridled quail-doves and other species. Binoculars and a camera are definite must-haves!

TURTLE WATCHING
From May to December, turtles can be seen lumbering their way to several beaches to release their eggs – truly a sight to behold! Popular nesting beaches for these gentle giants include Isle’s Bay, Old Road Bay, Lime Kiln Bay, Woodlands Beach and Bumkum Bay. Among the species that frequent the shoreline are Green, Leatherback and Hawksbill turtles.
