The Inndawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary was Myanmar’s first eco-tourism site. Opened in 2013, this sanctuary is the result of the ministries of hotels and tourism’s efforts in environmental conservation. As of 2016, there are four villages appointed as CBT sites: Lone Tone, Haipu, Nant Mee Laung He and Nyaung Pyinat. Local residents would provide bed-and-breakfast accommodation as part of the CBT programmes. Package tours organised by organisations and travel companies are also available. Tourists can enjoy kayaking, cycling, explore villages and even discover the history of religious sites.

Irrawaddy Dolphins, Sagaing Region
This Community-Based Tourism (CBT) happens to involve six Ayeyarwady villages between Sagaing and Mandalay. This CBT programme has caught the attention of many tourists for its unique activity that showcases a special interaction between local fishermen and the famous Irrawaddy Dolphins. Visitors also gain hands-on experience in fishing and casting nets under the guidance of local fishermen/women involved in the programme. Boat trips along the Ayeyarwady River reward tourists with the splendid view of nature and wildlife. Tourists can also observe village life and learn about architecture, religion, tradition, and even handicraft skills.

Nwe Nyein Village, Shwebo, Sagaing Region
In Sagaing Region’s CBT, tourists get to experience pottery-making and learn the people’s way in local agriculture. This programme also allows tourists to explore the beauty of nature found in this region by observing dolphins discover a rare Pyu City listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.

Banmauk, Katha, Sagaing Region
CBT in Zalon Taung was initiated in 2017 but foreign tourists are not allowed entry as the area is still one of the restricted zones in Myanmar. However, there were 76,854 domestic visitors who participated in CBT programmes from December 2017 to September 2018.

Loikaw, Kayah State
In 2016, the small Kayah State (Loikaw) was offered the CBT initiative in 4 villages: Pan Pet, Hta Nee La Leh, Daw Ta Ma Gyi and Htay Kho. As the state is rich with distinctive tribes packed with diverse culture and traditions, cultural tours in this region give tourists a detailed insight into the authentic lifestyle of the villagers. This tour provides valuable experience in exploring Kayah’s breathtaking surrounding, learning about each tribe’s culture, lifestyle, handicrafts, and silversmithing skills. Locals will also invite tourists to join them in making Kayah sausages to be savoured together with Kayah rice wine on a feast-like occasion.

Sor Long Village, Kan Pet Let, Chin State
Sorlong Village has been chosen as one of Chin State’s CBT sites in 2017. The tours provide visitors with a worthwhile experience in observing the Chin people’s culture and traditions. Locals will also guide tourists to climb the Khaw Nau Sone Mountain, a crucial area for various bird species and witness the scenic beauty of Kawlong Waterfall. Visitors can also spend the night in a nearly untouched village and interact with the locals there. Tourists can also enjoy celebrating like the locals by dancing and drinking traditional Chin wine.

Kyaikthalae Village And Bio Garden, Twantay, Yangon Region
CBT in Kyaikthalae village, Twante Township allows tourists to witness the planting of the Bio-garden in Yangon. Visitors can also see how locals weave baskets, visit monastic schools and talk to the students residing in the area, and at the same time offering them harvest from the bio-garden. Tourists can also learn the interesting process of creating natural fertilizer, cultivating crops and also poultry farming.

Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park, Sagaing Region
Admire the scenic view of untouched forests packed with lush coniferous trees and observe bountiful inland bird species found in the area. In the largest National Park in Myanmar, tourists can also visit religious sites and follow the locals in paying respects to the shrines and pagodas in Alaungdawkathapa.

Kayin is famous for its tea and coffee production. Tourists have a lot to explore in Kayin State including Mt. Zwekabin, Lumbini Garden, Thandaung, Sadan Cave and other things. YANGON
Yangon is a region of importance nestled on the south-central part of Myanmar. Yangon is the capital of the Yangon region and the erstwhile capital of Myanmar. The city houses a large number of colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia and has a unique colonial-era urban core that has been maintained over the years. The area around the Sule Pagoda is more than 2000 years old and is the commercial core of the city. Yangon is a vibrant city in flux and undergoing modernisation and also one of the most attractive cities in southeast Asia. Yangon is home to the nation’s most beloved landmark, the glorious Shwedagon Pagoda. The city was founded by King Alaungpaya of the Kone Baung Dynasty when he took the village of Dagon in 1755. He named the settlement Yangon which means ‘end of strife”. It has a unique charm with tree-lined streets, serene parks and tranquil lakes combined with the hustle and bustle of street vendors and thriving markets. Recent years have seen the modernisation of the urban landscape but Yangon still boasts the highest concentration of colonial heritage in the region.

MON
Mon is a state in Myanmar which covers a narrow strip of land located between Kayin state to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west. The first recorded kingdom of Mon is attributed to Dvaravati which prospered around 1024 AD till their capital was sacked by the Khmer Empire. The region was conquered by the British in 1824 after the first Anglo-Burmese War. The Mon people helped the British in the war, in return for promises of their own leadership once Burma is defeated. Thousands of Mons had migrated to Siam earlier but returned to their homeland during the British rule. However, the promise was never fulfilled and Mon existed as a colony of the British. Mon has a tropical climate since it is located close to the sea. Currently, Mon has about 8 notable cities and two islands. It is home to the Mon people who are the ethnic group of the state. They are one of the earliest people to reside in Southeast Asia. They speak the earliest people to live in southeast Asia.

MYEIK
Myeik (also known as Mergui Archipelago) is a group of islands located in the Southern region of Myanmar on the Andaman Sea. It comprises more than 800 pristine islands of varying sizes. These untouched islands are renowned for their pristine white-sand beaches and diverse marine life. Myeik City, located in the far south of the region is a must see. Apart from being a gorgeous and remote island, Myeik also has a host of to an amazing colonial-era buildings, and boasts a 500-year long nautical history. The clear waters are also perfect for pearl cultivation. For a nature lover, Myeik is heaven on earth. The unparallel diversity of flora and fauna coupled with breathtaking underwater scenes and marine life make for an unforgettable holiday destination. DAWEI
Dawei is the capital of Tanintharyi Region, the southern part of Myanmar. It is a coastal region covering an area of over 4184 sq km. Historically, it has been an important trading port. It features some interesting colonial architecture, with many old wooden, thatch-roofed bungalows and some brick and stucco mansions. Dawei is dotted with islands and famous historical pagodas.

KAW THAUNG
Kawthaung, formerly known as Victoria Point, is the southernmost town in Myanmar. It is one of the entry ports into Myanmar and is separated from Thailand by the broad estuary of the Pakchan River. Kaw Thaung has a coastline extending for about 2800 kilometres and is characterised by estuaries, rivers, creeks and islands. The border town of Thailand, Ranong is located quite nearby, right across the river. The entire area is only 322 kilometres north of Phuket. Kawthaung retains the charming character of a prosperous fishing village. Kawthaung is surrounded by the Mergui National Reserve where one can enjoy snorkelling and diving expeditions. The key to enjoying in Kawthaung is to escape 100m back from the harbour where the town’s charming streets offer sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the harbor. Tourists can get a 360-degree view of the region from the Ngar Thone Lone Hill.

The capital city of Magway Region is Magway City. In this region, excavation activities revealed fossils of primates that are more than 40 million years old, which has become the pride of the government. One of the few Pyu cities listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site can be found in Magway. Locals living near the Ayeyarwady River use the river as their main transportation system, but those who live away from the river use the road as their major way of transport. Magway is a region packed with beautiful nature and meaningful heritage. NAY PYI TAW
Nay Pyi Taw is the administrative and political capital of Myanmar. It was declared as the capital in 2006, although most commercial activity still takes place in the former capital Yangon. It is administered as the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory. There is more to Nay Pyi Taw than only being the capital of the nation. It is close to three important states – Shan, Kayah and Kayin. The entire region has developed rapidly over the last decade. Tourists like the wide, manicured, multi-lane roads of the town which is free from traffic congestion. Nay Pyi Taw is the country’s centre for meetings, incentives, conferences and events. It houses over 50 hotels including top international brands fully equipped with luxury facilities to host VIP guests. The city has state-of-the-art systems for hosting banquets and conferences at the two large buildings of Myanmar International Convention Centres. Several prestigious events such as the World Economic Forum East Asia, ASEAN Summit and ASEAN Tourism Forum has been successfully held here. Nay Pyi Taw also has a number of tourist destinations such as museums, pagodas, gardens as well as magnificent natural views which attract tourists from all over the world.

RAKHINE
Rakhine State is located on the western coast of Myanmar. It has a long coastline on the Bay of Bengal in the west. The Arakan Mountains, rising to a height of 10,049 feet at Victoria Peak separate Rakhine State from central Burma. The state has some fairly large islands off the coast such as Cheduba and Myingun Islands. Rakhine hosts the Ngapali Beach, one of Myanmar’s premier beach destinations, located only 45 minutes by air from Yangon. Although the beach is quite popular, it is not very crowded. It is famous for its turquoise waters, wide stretches of white sand, palm tree groves and fishing village, it is relatively unspoilt. Rakhine offers a number of tourist spots such as Mrauk U, the ancient city of the Rakhine dynasty, Sittwe, Shitthaung Pagoda, Dukkanthein Pagoda, Kothaung Pagoda, Laymyatnha Pagoda, Andaw Pagoda and many more.

MANDALAY CITY
Mandalay is the second-largest city of Myanmar, located on the east bank of Ayeyarwady river. It is an important economic centre of the northern side of Myanmar and is regarded as a cultural centre of the country. The city has been named after the nearby Mandalay Hill. Mandalay was the former capital of the country and has a rich history behind it. It was founded at the foothills of the Mandalay hill in 1857 by King Mindon. The city was founded to fulfil a prophecy of founding a metropolis of Buddhism on the occasion of the 2400th anniversary of setting up of Buddhism. The city served as the capital of the country until its final annexation by the British Empire in 1885. From the ornate royal palace to breathtaking sunsets over the river, Mandalay takes days to explore. It provides a thorough glimpse of the culture of Myanmar and its people.

BAGAN
Bagan, an ancient city located in the Mandalay region is one of the most visited places by tourists in the country. The city served as the capital of Myanmar from the 9th to 13th centuries. It was the capital of the Pagan kingdom, the kingdom which unified regions that constitute the Myanmar of today. The Bagan Archaeological Zone is the main attraction of the country and is one of the richest archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River, the temples of Bagan leaves one awestruck. Bagan has approximately 2000 ancient monuments and pagodas strewn all over Bagan. The monuments are located on the land between the river bank and the Turintaung range. Although Bagan is most famous for its historic monuments, it has a lot more to offer. Tourists can visit nearby local villages and watch people weaving cotton. Bagan is famous for ancient craft, especially in lacquer. It is also famous for its mural painting, oil processing and palm sugar production.

MAGNIFICENT MONUMENTS AND PAGODAS
Bagan is famous for its historical monuments and houses around 2000 monuments from different periods. It is the most important historical site in Myanmar and is awe-inspiring. With a rich history of over 1500 years, Bagan stands evidence to achievements made by men before any technological innovation came into being. The walls of many of these monuments have historic mural paintaings which are a not to be missed site for tourists. Although Bagan has innumerable monuments, they do not look the same. In fact, the number of same types of monuments is very few, perhaps three or four. It is worthwhile to spend a day or two exploring the variety of monuments and pagodas. One of the best viewing points of Bagan is the top terrace of the Bagan viewing tower from where one can see temples literally till the horizon. A balloon ride over the temples is also a great way to enjoy the panoramic view.

SCENIC RIVER VIEWS
One of the best way to see Myanmar is to take a river on the Ayeyarwady River, the longest and the most important river in Myanmar. Tourists can enjoy a relaxing and comfortable cruise on the river. There is a range of options available to tourists – from traditional riverboats to luxury river cruises. KACHIN
Kachin State is a beautiful state located northern of Myanmar and is adorned by the king of mountains, the Himalayas. Hkakabo Razi, the highest peak of Myanmar is also located here. Kachin is also home to the largest inland lake of Southeast Asia – Indawgyi Lake and the birthplace of Ayeyarwady River. The lush green farmlands on the banks of the river interspersed with snow-capped peaks present a postcard-perfect scene for visitors to admire. The state is also famous for the abundance of jade and gold. The sight of people in groups digging a panning for gold is quite common to be seen on the sides of Ayeyarwaddy River.

SAGAING
Sagaing’s classical name, Zeyapura, means the ‘city of victory’. The region, located at the north-western part of Myanmar, was the capital of the Sagaing Kingdom. It was one of the few kingdoms that managed to rise despite the fall of the Bagan dynasty and was also known to be the princes’ province during the Ava period. The region plays an important role as a religious centre and is known to have a great many. The Sagaing Hill, one of the main places for meditation in the country, is also known to have great meditation centres. Sagaing is home to numerous Buddhist monasteries and pagodas located on hills and parallel to the river, creating a magnificent view that would awe tourists visiting the area. Sagaing is home to the famous Naga Festival where tourists from all over the world would come to witness this unique and culturally rich celebration.

CHIN
Located at the western side of Myanmar with Hakha as its capital, the Chin State/Chin Hills stands tall at 3,053 metres, attracting mountaineers and hikers to visit Chin. The state is bordered by the Rakhine State, Bangladesh, Sagaing Region, Magway Division, and India. It is best for tourists to travel to Chin from Bagan all the way to Mindat, the entrance gateway to Chin. Mindat can be reached via a boat ride along the Ayeryarwaddy River, passing Kanma, Pauk, and Kyaukhtu. Tourists can then enjoy a drive up to Mount Victoria, the highest peak of Chin Hills. The roads are cut along mountainsides and alleys, providing tourists with a picturesque view of the state’s scenery.

SHAN STATE
The capital state of Shan is Taungyi City. The Shan State was founded during the Pagan Kingdom. The Shan people prefer calling their land as ‘Muang Tai’, and they fondly go by the names of Tai or Dai instead of Shan. The Thais mostly call them ‘Tai Yai’, or ‘big Thai’. The second largest ethnic residing in Shan is the Wa people. The mountainous landscape coupled with the Thanlwin River that flows through the state provides a breathtaking view of the state. Shan is also known to house many beautiful caves that tourists would not want to miss.

INLE LAKE
Known as the heart of Shan State, Inle Lake is about 39 km away from the capital city of Shan State. The massive highland lake is located 900 m above sea level and is 22 km long. Mountain ranges that surround the area is reflected on the lake’s surface, offering an impressive view. The natural lake is untouched and clean. Its shores and islands are mostly populated by villagers called the Intha people who are famous for their unique leg-rowing method. Visitors can tour the lake by getting on motorboats or experience the one-legged rowing method of the locals by taking a tour in their canoes. The area of the lake is big enough to house a wildlife sanctuary as well as several pagodas, markets, and gardens. Tourists can enjoy visiting landmarks and villages around the impressive lake.

MARVELLOUS SCENARIES
Being the northernmost state, Kachin presents amazing natural views for tourists to enjoy. It is the birthplace of Ayeyarwaddy, the most important river of Myanmar. A short ride from Myitkina will take tourists to Myitsone, where MayKha and Malika rivers join together to form Ayeyarwaddy. The clear water and the cool climate is to be cherished. The extensive banks of Ayeyarwaddy are ideal for farming and hence, lush green farmlands are the most common view here. Kachin is also home to Indawgyi, Myanmar’s largest natural lake, a stunning and secluded destination for nature lovers. It is fairly untouched although adventure activities such as recreational fishing, kayaking, trekking and cycling are available.

SNOW CAPPED MOUNTAINS
Kachin is the only state in Myanmar which is home to the mighty Himalayas. The snowcapped mountains are the birthplace of innumerable large and small rivers, lakes, flora and fauna. Tourists looking to enjoy the cool weather need to head out to towns nestled in the lap of the hills. Khakaborazi, the nation’s highest peak at 5,882m, is found in Kachin State. A mountainous region in the far north of Myanmar. It is also considered to be the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. The peak is enclosed within the Khakaborazi National Park, a mountainous park characterised by broad-leaved evergreen rain forest, semi-deciduous forest and snowy forest. The entire region is a treat to anyone who loves mountainous terrain.

INTERESTING TOWNS
Kachin has a number of distinct towns each of which has a distinctive character to itself. Myitkina is the capital and is a busy town which is also the business centre of Kachin State. A clean city with a cool climate, Myitkina is ideal for enjoying the scenic beauty of the Kachin region. A notable town located further north is Putao which is famous for the variety of birds and rare orchids. The forests on the east and west of Putao are filled with magnificent black orchids and the area provides excellent base to view the scenic beauty of the Himalayas, included its forests and rivers.

Myitkina: Myitkina is the capital state of Kachin State and is renowned for its cultural, religious and ethnic diversity, attractive riverside or surrounds areas. A short drive from Myitkina takes a visitor to Myitsone, the largest inland lake of Southeast Asia. Myitkina has a lovely riverfront where a local market is operated regularly. A large standing and reclining Buddha image also adorn the river bank.

Myitsone: A journey of 45 kilometres to the north of Myitkina takes a visitor to Myitsone, the scenic confluence of the Mayhka and the Malikha rivers which join to form the Ayeyarwady river. The journey takes about one and a half hours and the road passes through breathtakingly scenic parts of Myanmar.

Inndawgyi Lake: Inndawgyi Lake, the largest inland lake of Southeast Asia is located in the Mohnyin Township in the Kachin State. The lake measure 13 km east to west and 24 km north to south. The lake has a wildlife sanctuary around it which contains a variety of species especially some rare mammals and birds.

Putao: Tourists looking forward to viewing some snow-capped peaks need to visit Putao, a quaint town nestled in the lap of the Himalayas. The town has a cold climate throughout the year and is characterised by people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds who are warm to tourists. Visitors will be able to see a number of flora and fauna here, especially rare species.

Shwe Mitzu Pagoda: Shwe Mitzu pagoda is an enchanting pagoda located on the west bank of the Inndawgyi lake. The pagoda consists of terraces, each of which is adorned with stone statues.

Kachin People: The hills of Kachin are inhabited by the Kachin or Chingpaw people who are characterised by a large number of tribes, sub-tribes and clans. Most numbers of Kachin people live in China and India and speak the Jinghpaw language and survive on farming on the hill.
