CHATHAM ISLANDS
The Chatham Islands are a remote ocean-bound wilderness and are most famous for plentiful fresh seafood and fascinating marine and wildlife. With outstanding scenery and welcoming hosts, these islands will leave a lasting impression on you.

The Chatham Islands consists of two main islands, Chatham Island and Pitt Island located approximately 800 kilometres east of New Zealand.

A far-flung adventure
When you visit the Chatham Islands you are at the remotest eastern point of New Zealand and the furthest internal flight possible.

Here are some handy things to know:
– There are only 660 local residents.
– The islands get approximately 2,000 visitors per year.
– The time zone is 45 minutes ahead of the mainland.
– There is no cellphone coverage on the Chatham Islands.
– Passports aren’t required to fly to the Chatham Islands.
– The currency on the islands is the New Zealand dollar.

As most goods, including fuel, must be transported to the island by ship or plane, expect your visit to be a little more costly than on the mainland. You can be sure that is well worth the extra investment.

Accommodation and transport are limited on the islands and with most of the land privately owned, is it essential to book tours well in advance.

Home of the Moriori
The Chatham Islands were first inhabited by the Moriori people. European sealers and whalers were the next to arrive, followed by Māori from the New Zealand mainland. Descendants of Moriori still live in the Chatham Islands and visiting Kopinga Marae will give you great insights into the culture.

The overall shape of the uniquely designed marae represents an albatross in flight, a bird that has great cultural significance to Moriori. It is the base for the revival of Moriori language, cultural traditions, wānanga (meeting together to learn) and community and school events.

Visitors will hear stories of the Moriori people and their ancient covenant of peace and view intricate carvings and artwork. A trip to view the statue of Tommy Solomon (Tame Horomona Rehe), the last full-blooded Moriori, at Manukau east of Owenga, is also worthwhile.

SUBANTARCTIC ISLANDS
New Zealand’s remote Subantarctic Islands are a region of wild landscapes, unique wildlife and forgotten beauty.

Located south of New Zealand in the remote Southern Ocean, the wild and beautiful Subantarctic Islands are a forgotten paradise. They are home to some of the most abundant and unique wildlife on earth, with many species of birds, plants and invertebrates found nowhere else in the world.

These remote islands have UNESCO World Heritage status and the highest protection of any nature reserves in New Zealand.

Although a strict management plan restricts the number of people allowed ashore each year, some tour companies such as Heritage Expeditions and Wildlife and Wilderness operate tours to the islands at various times throughout the year.

The Snares

Lying about 100km southwest of Stewart Island/Rakiura, the Snares, is one of the most untouched and pristine areas in New Zealand.

Forests of large tree daisies cover the islands and hundreds of birds, seals and invertebrates inhabit the steep cliffs.The Snares are home to several endemic species including three land birds and a number of invertebrates.

The Auckland Islands
The Auckland Island group are the largest of New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands. The islands are an important breeding ground for many seabirds, including the rare yellow-eyed penguin, white capped mollymawk, Gibson’s wandering albatross, the sooty shearwater and the endemic Auckland shag.

Campbell Island
English botanist Joseph Hooker described Campbell Island as having a “flora display second to none outside the tropics.” It is particularly known for its megaherbs; giant perennial wildflowers, which have developed as an adaptation to the harsh weather conditions on the islands.

The island has been severely affected by human activity, but since 1954, a process of pest eradication has allowed the native wildlife to return and flourish.

STEWART ISLAND – RAKIURA
Stewart Island is New Zealand’s third largest island, situated 30 kilometres south of the South Island, across the Foveaux Strait.

In the Māori language, it’s known as Rakiura which means ‘the land of glowing skies’. You’ll get an inkling why when you see the Aurora Australis which often appears in these southern skies.

Over 85% of the island is National Park, and most people come here for the hiking and birdwatching. The island has just 28km of road, but 280km of walking tracks suited to short walks, day walks and multi-day hikes. Walk the three-day Rakiura Track and you will get the full experience of Stewart Island’s wild beauty.

Stewart Island is a haven for brown kiwi or Tokoeka, which outnumber humans on the island and are active day and night. Blue penguins and the rare yellow-eyed penguins waddle among the rocks. Offshore on Ulva Island, you’ll find a predator-free bird sanctuary with dozens of native species.

The 400 or so Stewart Islanders are a proud and independent bunch, but they’re friendly too. There’s only one settlement of any size on the island – Halfmoon Bay, sometimes called Oban, which offers a wide variety of accommodation.

If you’re walking the tracks, the Department of Conservation provides huts for overnight hikes. DOC has a visitor centre on the island where you can find out more.

One of the best ways to experience Stewart Island is with a boat cruise. You’ll explore secluded bays and beautiful inlets – and, if you’re lucky, you may see penguins, dolphins or even an albatross.

Stewart Island, New Zealand, can be reached by ferry from Bluff, or by light aircraft from Invercargill. Ulva Island is accessible by water taxi.

GREAT BARRIER ISLAND
Great Barrier Island is a large island with a small population. The forests, beaches and bays provide scope for all kinds of wilderness adventures. The island is entirely off-grid relying on renewable solar power and collection of freshwater. With a population of around 1000 people, the locals are sure to welcome you to their vibrant, self-sufficient community.

Great Barrier Island is the largest and most seaward of the Hauraki Gulf islands in the Auckland region. For thousands of years, it has sheltered Auckland’s harbour from the relentless swells of the Pacific Ocean, creating a boating paradise.

The 90 kilometre journey from Auckland city takes about 4.5 hours by fast ferry or you can catch a 30-minute flight with Fly My Sky(opens in new window) or Barrier Air.

The eastern shore of Great Barrier Island faces the ocean with high cliffs and long white surf beaches; the western side offers deep sheltered harbours and calm sandy bays.

More than 60 percent of Great barrier Island’s 285 square kilometres is public land administered by the Department of Conservation. The native forest is laced with beautiful walking tracks, which lead to secluded natural hot springs and a historic Kauri dam. These wilderness areas, foreshores, and estuaries are home to several unique plant and bird species. Rising 627 metres above the sea, Hirakimata (Mount Hobson) beckons the hiker with the promise of incredible 360-degree views.

There are several ways that you can get around Great Barrier Island while visiting. Shuttle and transfer companies operate throughout the island or there is a wide range of rental cars, vans and electric motorbikes available for daily hire. It is best to pre-arrange transport before your arrival.

Great Barrier Island is a popular destination for diving, fishing, surfing, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, camping and star gazing. Accommodation options range from tent sites to luxury eco-lodges.

Tryphena is the largest settlement on the island and is situated on the west coast. Home to a number of picturesque family-friendly beaches, dolphins are often spotted here close to the shoreline.

A number of events are held on Great Barrier Island every year, including the delicious FitzRoy Mussel Fest, which celebrates the mouth-watering mussels the area is known for. Other settlements include Whangaparapara and Tryphena on the western side; Claris on the eastern side.

ISLANDS
Shrouded in forest or speckled with farms and holiday homes, islands have a special charm that kicks in the moment you step ashore. Not counting the North and South Islands, our largest island is Rakiura – known to most as Stewart Island. This southern paradise is home to our newest national park. LAKE TEKAPO
Picturesque by day and dazzling by night, Lake Tekapo is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, making it the perfect spot for stargazing.

Lake Tekapo is about three hours drive south-west of Christchurch in the Mackenzie Basin. The township faces north across the remarkable turquoise coloured lake to the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps. Lake Tekapo gets its intense milky-turquoise colour from the fine rock-flour (ground by glaciers) which is suspended in the water.

Church of the Good Shepherd
On the shores on the lake you’ll see the beautiful Church of the Good Shepherd, where the altar window frames a perfect view of the Southern Alps beyond the lake. The church was built in 1935 for the pioneer families of the Mackenzie district and is still used as a place of worship. The church is a popular photo spot for visitors – please note that when you visit the church, weddings and services may be taking place, respect is needed from visitors.

Close by is the “sheepdog monument” – a bronze statue sculpted to recognise the district’s debt to the sheepdog “without the help of which the grazing of the mountainous country would be impossible”.

There are walking tracks following the lake shore. For huge views of the Mackenzie Basin you can hike up to Mount John Observatory (1031 metres) or Cowans Hill.

The Southern Lights
The southern hemisphere’s equivalent of the Northern Lights, Lake Tekapo is one of the best places in New Zealand to see this symphony of colour come to life. Best seen between April and September, Lake Tekapo is known for it’s clear nights and lack of light pollution, making it a great viewing destination. Head to Mount John Observatory – perched high in the mountains and south-facing – for your best chance of experiencing this spectacular natural light show.

Mackenzie Basin History
The first people to live in the Mackenzie Basin were Māori. They quarried stone for tools, fished for eel, hunted birds and established summer camps along the rivers and lakes. European settlers didn’t really know about the area until the mid 1800s, when a Scottish shepherd named Jock Mackenzie was arrested for sheep stealing. He ventured into this high country to hide his stolen flock from the eyes of the law.

KAIKŌURA
The picturesque coastal town of Kaikoura is the perfect place for marine life encounters, coastal walks, and tucking into a plate of crayfish.

Kaikōura is a base for wildlife experiences of all kinds – it’s also a great place to eat crayfish (in the Māori language ‘kai’ means food, ‘kōura’ means crayfish). An easy two-hour drive north of Christchurch, Kaikōura makes for a great day trip or a fun stop on your way to Marlborough.

Kaikōura’s environment is truly spectacular – the village is caught between the rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range and the Pacific Ocean. In winter the mountains are covered with snow, adding to the drama of the landscape.

Kaikōura’s special talent is marine mammal encounters – whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters. Whale watching trips leave the town several times a day and the local seal colony is always entertaining. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants and shops to explore.

Must-do activities in Kaikōura:
– Go whale-watching by boat or air at any time of the year.
– Swim with or simply watch beautiful dusky dolphins on a dolphin encounter.

MATAMATA
Matamata is a must see if you’re a Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fan. Take a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set and enjoy the town’s fabulous cafes.

Two hours south of Auckland lies the lush farmland of Hobbiton Movie Set(opens in new window); it has more than 44 unique hobbit holes, including Bag End (Bilbo’s house). As you wander through the heart of the Shire, you’ll get to hear the fascinating commentary about how it was all created.

Along your journey you’ll see the mill, the double arched bridge and the famous Party Tree before stopping for a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Evening tours are also available, and they include a feast fit for a hobbit!

A number of great farmstays are also on offer in Matamata. Just east of town you can discover the North Island’s highest waterfalls, Wairere Falls, which are a spectacular sight plunging 153m. The Wairere Falls walking track showcases a diverse range of natural scenery and from the lookout you can enjoy magnificent views over the valley and the Waikato Plains.

Matamata is situated 2 hours’ drive from Auckland, 45 minutes from Hamilton and 1 hour from Rotorua.

MILFORD SOUND
Situated on the west coast of the South Island, Milford Sound is a fusion of spectacular natural features with amazing visual cues around every corner.

Described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’, Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. Breathtaking in any weather, the fiord’s cliffs rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade downwards from as high as 1000 metres. When it rains in Milford Sound, and it often does, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect.

Boat cruises – during the day or overnight – are an excellent way to experience the Sound. Adventurous types might also like to head out sea kayaking, diving or flightseeing. To learn more about the local marine life, visit the underwater observatory at Harrison Cove and marvel at the black coral, 11-legged sea stars and delicate anemones.

If you enjoy hiking or trekking, the Milford Track is for you. The track begins at the northern end of Lake Te Anau and winds its way through some of the world’s most vivid wilderness. Your journey ends with a boat trip from Sandfly Point to the Milford Sound wharf.

Many people visit the Sound on a day trip from Te Anau or Queenstown. The small village of Milford Sound also has limited places to stay so pre-booking is advised or choose from the many options in Te Anau or Manapouri. If you’re hungry there’s a café in the village, or you can enjoy food and drink onboard your boat cruise.

WAITOMO CAVES
Under the green hills of Waitomo lies a labyrinth of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers. The area’s name comes from the Maori words wai (water) and tomo (hole).

The easiest way to see the Waitomo Caves is with a walking or boat tour. If you’re into adventure, try the unique experience of Black Water Rafting – you’ll crawl, swim and float through the caves on a rubber tube. Or you could abseil or zip-line through the darkness. However you choose to explore Waitomo Caves, you’re bound to agree they’re a wonder of nature.

There is as much to see and experience above ground as there is below.

Enjoy good cafes and walks as well as natural wonders inclduing the beautiful Marokopa Falls and limestone Mangapohue bridge. A walkway beginning near the Waitomo Museum of Caves leads through farmland where you’ll see fascinating rock forms.

For a quirky insight into rural New Zealand life, take in one of the local farm shows, or go exploring on a guided horse trek. If you’d like to visit some New Zealand’s rarest birds, including our national icon, the kiwi, head to Otorohanga Kiwi House in Otorohanga.

Nearby, the Pureora forest provides some great short and long hikes suitable for all levels. Hunting and fishing tours are also on offer in the area.

AORAKI / MOUNT COOK
Aoraki Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain, with a height of 3,754 metres.

At the foot of the mountain sits the village of Mount Cook – a comfortable haven in one of the most unforgiving parts of New Zealand. On every side, the Southern Alps scrape the sky. Even in summer, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. The region is only 44 kilometres from the coast, so storms can arrive suddenly from the Tasman Sea to create dangerous conditions for climbers.

Despite the sometimes difficult conditions, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is an exceptionally beautiful place to visit. You don’t have to be a mountaineer to interact with the stunning scenery; there are various alpine walks beginning near the village, all about three hours return. Flightseeing, tours to the Tasman Glacier and stargazing are other ways to optimise your time here.

NAPIER
Beautifully preserved 1930s architecture is Napier’s special point of difference.

Street after street of stunning and beautifully-restored Art Deco buildings have made Napier famous as one of the most complete collections of Art Deco buildings in the world. In 1931 a massive earthquake rocked Hawke’s Bay for more than three minutes, killing nearly 260 and destroying the commercial centre of Napier.

Rebuilding began almost immediately, and new buildings reflected the architectural styles of the times – Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco. Napier is often referred to as a 1930s film set, and one of the best ways to enjoy the streetscape is on a self-guided walk – ask for a map at the information centre or at the Art Deco Trust. Guided walks around the city are also available every day rain or shine (except Christmas Day!). Every February, Napier celebrates its heritage with the Art Deco Festival – a stylish celebration of all things 1930s, including vintage cars, fashion and music.

Napier is home to many fine wineries, fabulous restaurants, bars and cafes. The boutique shops are a must-visit, as is the Sea Walls collection of magnificent murals painted on more than 50 walls around the city. Grab a map and walk or ride around the city to see them up close.

The beautifully restored Marine Parade serves as a scenic and popular bridge between the city and the Pacific Ocean, with a wealth of family-friendly activities sure to keep the kids entertained for hours. Napier’s iconic Norfolk Pines, Deco Soundshell, Tom Parker Fountain and ‘Pania of the Reef’ statue are a visual reminder of the city’s past. Drive just outside the city centre to the historic fishing village of Ahuriri to check out the growing list of cafes, bars, restaurants, galleries and boutique stores.

For the perfect photo opportunity, visit the Viewing Platform located on the Marine Parade foreshore, just down from the Pania statue. Napier is also the perfect base from which to explore the wider Hawke’s Bay region.

SNOW ACTIVITIES

RAFTING
From a quiet drift through forest wilderness to a white-knuckled, wide-eyed journey down turbulent rapids, rafting covers the full adventure spectrum.

The mountains of New Zealand’s interior feed a myriad of fast flowing rivers that run through the forests to the sea. Grade 1 rivers offer relatively tranquil waters, while grade 5 is regarded as an extreme sport. Trips ranging from a couple of hours to five days are led by qualified rafting guides who comply with established safety codes. All gear and special clothing is provided.

Rafting rivers in the North Island are mostly found in the central and east coast areas of Lake Taupo, Bay of Plenty and the Hawke’s Bay. Lake Taupo’s Tongariro River is home to three sections of white water, ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 4. In the South Island, you’ll get the chance to try rafting around the resort town of Queenstown, Christchurch and on the wild West Coast.

Some experiences include a combined helicopter and rafting experience. You can also try black water rafting through underground caves.

CAVING
Waitomo is often top of mind when thinking of caving in New Zealand, however there are many awesome caving sites throughout the country for you to explore.

Spelunkers (cavers) say that New Zealand has some of the most challenging and spectacular caving systems in the world, but even first-time cavers can enjoy our underground scenery. Caving experiences range from a dreamy drift through a glow-worm grotto to a rip-roaring, rope-dangling, action-packed subterranean adventure.

In the North Island the best known caving area is Waitomo Caves in the Waikato region. There are caves that you can simply walk through; there are caves you can float through (this is called black water rafting); and there are caves that require abseiling, climbing and squeezing. Experienced operators here know how to turn you into a caver in a single day.

The South Island has several caving areas – you’ll find guided underground adventures in Nelson, Fiordland and on the West Coast. Harwood’s Hole, just off the main Motueka-Takaka road in the Nelson region, is the deepest sinkhole in the southern hemisphere. You can look into it, but be careful you don’t fall in – it’s 180 metres straight down.

CANYONING
Canyoning is the ultimate adrenalin adventure. Leaping off waterfalls, sliding down rocks and experiencing forest and river areas that few ever get to see. The fine art of canyoning uses every part of your body and requires all kinds of skills – scrambling, climbing, jumping, sliding, abseiling, swimming and shouting “yeehaa” as often as you dare.

It’s a wet business, but you’re equipped with a tough wetsuit that provides warmth and a useful amount of padding (rocks can be sharp!). Under the watchful eye of your guide, you’ll make the journey down natural rock canyons, water-polished chutes, waterfalls, pools and streams.

ABSEILING / RAPPELLING
Abseiling, or rappelling, is an adventure activity suitable for all skill levels. Get a thrill rappelling down a rock face, waterfall or even into a cave!

Controlled descent is an enthralling way to interact with the landscape. And the great thing about abseiling, is that it’s quite easy to learn. After a few lessons, you’ll be slipping down the rope like a master.

In some cases, abseiling is a mode of transport – a way to reach an unknown world. This is certainly the scenario in Waitomo, where it’s necessary to drop 100 metres down a huge tomo (hole) in the earth to reach the Lost World.

Other adventures are focused on the trip down, like abseiling waterfalls in Egmont National Park or descending the rungway on Queenstown Hill. 

CLIMBING
Climbing – whether it’s on rock faces or mountain peaks – is a popular outdoor pursuit and New Zealand offers a range of options for all levels of climber.

For the world’s mountaineers, New Zealand is well and truly on the map. Our Southern Alps were Sir Edmund Hillary’s training ground for his historic Everest climb in 1953. With 30 peaks taller than 3000 metres, and Aoraki/Mount Cook scraping the sky at 3753 metres, there’s no shortage of challenging summits to conquer.

Even if you don’t come to New Zealand with a suitcase full of crampons, carabineers and ice picks, mountaineering is not out of the question. If you’ve always wanted to join an expedition and knock off a summit or two, or complete a mountain trek like the Ball Pass, experienced climbing instructors and guides are ready to help.

Rock climbing is another way to embrace New Zealand’s geology in an up-close-and-personal way. There are crags, boulders and cliff faces to ascend in Wanaka, Taranaki, Canterbury and Wellington. Various indoor rock climbing venues provide a chance to practice your technique.

OFF-ROAD DRIVING
A wonderful by-product of New Zealand’s agricultural heritage is our comprehensive network of back-country roads and tracks. Some off-road driving tracks are gravel, some are dirt and others are not much more than a sheep trail up the hillside.

Off-roading in New Zealand could be anything from a chauffeur-driven safari in a luxury Land Rover to a self-drive scoot around the forest on a quad bike. Experiences vary enormously according to where you are in the country. In Northland you can traverse colossal sand dunes on Ninety Mile Beach; Waikato four-wheel-driving could be a blast in a rally car or a quad bike farm tour; Marlborough might see you chasing the good life on a high country sheep station; and Canterbury could mean an alpine adventure in the foothills of the Southern Alps.

So buckle up, start your engine and hold on tight, the scenic wilderness is waiting.

ZIP LINING
The growing trend of zip lining involves an exhilarating mix of adrenaline, speed and nature. Today, zip lining is primarily an adventure thrill ride, but it wasn’t always that way. Originally created out of necessity, zip lining was invented as a method of fast transportation across canyons, rivers and other impassable areas. To create a zipline, cables and pulleys are threaded between two points at a slight angle; gravity then provides the momentum to pull the rider from one point to the next.

New Zealand is home to a number of spectacular zip lining experiences, where visitors can glide through spectacular native forest, across rivers and canyons.

In the North Island, make your way to Waiheke Island, where you’ll zip your way past stunning views of Auckland Harbour, or head to Rotorua for an immersive 3-hour wilderness experience.

In the South Island’s Queenstown you can take a gondola up to the top of Bob’s Peak; then fly through the treetops while gazing out at the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. On the West Coast, you can combine zip lining with river tubing and twinkling glow worms.

JET BOATING
Jet boating is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness and can be enjoyed the whole year round. Sit back, buckle yourself in and feel the acceleration.

The jet boat was developed in the 1950s by New Zealand farmer William (Bill) Hamilton, to allow navigation of the shallow Canterbury rivers. However, enterprising New Zealanders soon realised its potential as an adventure activity.

A New Zealand jet boat ride will take you powering through narrow river gorges, almost brushing against sheer rock faces; or skimming across the surface of water channels that weave through the shingle banks of braided rivers. Some of the most exhilarating trips are available near Queenstown and Canterbury. Other areas include the Buller and Makarora regions in the South Island and the Rangitaiki, Whanganui and Waikato Rivers in the North Island.

BUNGY
For many visitors, bungy jumping in New Zealand has almost become a rite of passage, that they take that heart-stopping leap of faith while they’re here.

In the 1980’s, a couple of young kiwis, AJ Hackett(opens in new window) and Henry van Asch, set up New Zealand’s first commercial bungy jumping operation, with a jump from the historic Kawarau Bridge(opens in new window) near Queenstown. Since then, New Zealand has become the home of bungy, with numerous other operators starting up.

All over the country you can leap from bridges, climbs, rail viaducts, specially made platforms perched on the edge of cliffs, and stadium roofs. The Nevis bungy is the highest and involves an incredible 134-metre plunge. You can also take a leap off the Auckland Harbour Bridge against the backdrop of the beautiful Waitemata Harbour.

In the Central North Island, just upstream from the Huka Falls, lies the Taupo Bungy – 47m above the Waikato River. You can choose to be dunked in the Waikato River below at the end of your jump. Every day of the week locals and tourists alike enjoy the experience of a bungy among stunning landscapes. Bungy jumping remains one of New Zealand’s most popular and renowned leisure activities.

A great way to get to know New Zealand when you’re short on time, fitness, or don’t want to carry a heavy pack, these trails are well formed and signposted, and usually easy to reach from major highways.

New Zealand’s Great Walks
The ten Great Walks are two to six-day adventures on well-formed and signposted tracks. There’s plenty of easy walking, but some steep, challenging terrain means a moderate to high level of fitness is required for them all. Their length and topography combined with New Zealand’s unpredictable weather make it essential to understand outdoor safety.

Each Great Walk has been selected for unique combinations of cultural significance, exceptional scenery, and accessibility. Over the Great Walks season between October and April, huts along the tracks are equipped with flushing toilets, cooking gas, and other comforts that aren’t typically seen in DOC huts. As these walks are popular, will need to book these huts in advance.

Multi-day walks

Where can you camp in New Zealand?
There are many different types of camping in New Zealand.

Campgrounds and holiday parks
Campgrounds or holiday parks are commercial operations that provide a safe and well-equipped camping experience. You will usually find tent sites as well as powered and unpowered van/motorhome sites, and sometimes cabins or ‘units’. A tent site may be a specific marked patch of grass or a ‘take what you can find’ arrangement where you can pitch your tent anywhere. The cost of your tent or van space will include the use of the campground facilities.

Department of Conservation campsites
The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages over 250 public camping areas on conservation land throughout New Zealand. Located in some of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions, these campsites usually don’t have an on-site manager and are operated on a trust basis. Tents, vans, motorhomes and caravans are all welcome on DOC conservation campsites. Facilities are typically minimal and basic, but fees are very reasonable – sometimes free.

Freedom camping or ‘free’ camping
There are certain areas in New Zealand where you can pull over, park your campervan or motorhome or set up your tent and camp for the night, free of charge.

When freedom camping in New Zealand you must always:
– Use public toilets or the portable toilet in your vehicle.
– Leave no trace.
– Dispose of all rubbish responsibly, or take it with you.
– Keep detergents, soap, toothpaste etc. out of waterways.
– Only use approved dump stations to dispose of motorhome waste.

New Zealand is located where two tectonic plates of the earth’s crust meet. This causes a large amount of geothermal activity, allowing warm water to bubble up through the earth’s crust to form hot pools. These pools often contain minerals dissolved from the rocks they seeped through.

For centuries locals have enjoyed these hot pools, with some believing that sitting in mineral water helps with medical problems. Some hot pools have been developed to include day spas, which means you’ll need to pay admission. Others are still ‘wild’ and free-of charge.

Rotorua
In Rotorua, a city built on top of an active volcanic zone, nearly every accommodation establishment offers private, exchange-heated spa pools. You’ll also find a selection of hot pool complexes, including Hells Gate and the Polynesian Spa.

Near Reporoa is a hot spring called Butcher’s Pool. Rated highly by regular soakers, this free-of-charge pool is owned and maintained by the Rotorua District Council. It has sealed walkways, toilets and changing rooms. A free treat near Lake Rotowhero is Kerosene Creek, which has a hot waterfall and a clean pool with a sandy bottom. There is a good old Kiwi corrugated-iron changing shed here, which adds to the rustic ambience.

Lake Taupo
Lake Taupo is home to a range of naturally-heated hot pools – perfect for a relaxing soak after a busy day of exploring. Long time local favourite, Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs(opens in new window) offers heated indoor and outdoor pools while Tokaanu Thermal Pools offer private and public hot pool experiences.

If you’re looking for a thermal soak and massage in a quiet setting, head to Wairakei Terraces and if you’d like to explore some of the region’s thermal pools without pulling out your wallet, head along to either the Lake Terrace or Spa Park.

South Island – Hanmer Springs
There are fewer hot springs in the South Island, which has very different geography to the North Island. However the huge Alpine Fault that created the Southern Alps has done the world a favour with Hanmer Springs(opens in new window), an all-seasons hot spring resort that regularly wins awards for its facilities. At Hanmer you’ll find thermal mineral, sulphur and freshwater pools, as well as a large children’s activity area with water slides. Beauty and massage treatments put the finishing touches on your relaxation.

If you’d like the unique experience of bathing in heated glacial waters, head to Tekapo Springs(opens in new window). Or soak in fresh mountain water and glorious alpine views at the outdoor Omarma Hot Tubs, just 90 minutes from Aoraki/Mount Cook.

The most southern free soak can be found at Welcome Flat in Westland, but you’ll have to work for it. Beginning south of Fox Glacier, follow the Copland Track for seven hours until you come to a Department of Conservation (DOC) hut and campsite (you’ll need to make a booking with DOC to stay the night). The pools are a short walk from the hut and have one of the best wilderness views in New Zealand. During the spring thaw you can lie back in the hot water and watch avalanches cascading down the mountains.

Coromandel
The Lost Spring(opens in new window) near Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula harnesses crystal clear water that flows from a hot water spring 600 metres below the earth’s surface. With sculpted pools and soothing waterfalls framed by native forest, the Lost Spring promises a very picturesque soaking experience.

Down the coast from Whitianga is Hot Water Beach, where heated water bubbles up through the sand. A couple of hours either side of high tide, you can dig your own spa pool then lie back and watch the waves breaking on the beach. Amazing! This hot soak is totally free-of-charge, unless you need to rent a spade from the local store.

Great Barrier Island
East of Auckland in the farthest reaches of the Hauraki Gulf is Great Barrier Island, where you can hike to a magical free-of-charge hot pool experience deep in the forest. Just follow the Kaitoke Hot Springs walking track from Whangaparapara Road.

Te Aroha
Te Aroha Mineral Spas are located south of Auckland, beneath Mt Te Aroha. Modernised to resort standard, these pools retain the charm of the Edwardian era. A drinking fountain lets you ‘taste the waters’, which are believed to promote wellbeing (the fountain of youth?) and the town’s domain features the world’s only hot soda water geyser.

Hot pool safety
When swimming in natural hot pools, where the water comes out of the ground, keep your head above water because there is a small risk of contracting an illness called amoebic meningitis. While very rare, this illness is serious. New Zealand’s larger cities offer luxurious day spas that make an ideal addition to your holiday. There are also quiet retreats in the countryside or deep in the forest that combine relaxing therapies with picturesque landscapes. In a day or two you’ll feel and look like a new person.
