Pictures of Fjord Norway reveal stunning scenery with deep blue fjords, flowing waterfalls, and sharp, snow-capped mountains that tower high above the water. Here, the seals and eagles reign, and the whales and fish patrol the deep fjords.

The striking landscapes of Fjord Norway were created by a succession of ice ages, and the characteristic landscape hasn’t changed a great deal since people started living here. Fjord arms and waterfalls are accessible virtually everywhere you go, and UNESCO has included the west Norwegian fjord landscape, exemplified by the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord, on its prestigious World Heritage List.

In Fjord Norway you’ll find everything from solitary islands to some of Norway’s largest cities. A short drive is all it takes to go from urban life to quiet countryside or prime wilderness. Along every fjord, you will find small communities and villages with their own culinary specialities. The local traditions reflect what was possible to grow in each place.

Many of the region’s fertile valleys are ideal for growing fruit, and apples, pears, cherries, and strawberries are popular and common crops. Wild game, fish, or locally reared sheep form the base of many a special dish from Fjord Norway.

Tourists all over the world have Fjord Norway on their wish list, and for a good reason. If you prefer to visit the region and its many attractions without the crowds, be sure to go in autumn, winter or spring during the so-called Viking season.

EASTERN NORWAY – AN EAST SIDE STORY
The Norwegian east is booming
Ambitious architects and hard-working chefs are taking Oslo to new heights. And if that doesn’t peak your interest, try hiking to the top of Norway’s tallest mountain Galdhøpiggen and see Eastern Norway from 2,469 metres above sea level.

Combine cool city culture with wildlife experiences in raw nature. In a surprisingly short time you can get from charming coastal towns in the Oslo region via huge forests populated by moose to Norway’s absolute highest and mightiest mountains in the Jotunheimen national park, where you can even walk on smaller glaciers – on guided trips, of course.

Many kickstart their holiday in the capital of Oslo, which is also the country’s main hub for international and domestic travel. The urban vibe is boosted by new architecture, exciting food, and a lively music and art scene. The city is also a good base for day trips around the region.

Even though Eastern Norway is by far the country’s most populated region, there are vast areas of almost untouched nature and plenty of things to do outside. Why not start with compact island hopping, a boat ride on Norway’s largest lake, or fly-fishing in one of the famous salmon rivers?

The hiking possibilities are endless, with the Besseggen ridge as only one of many popular mountain routes. Cycling enthusiasts can choose between classic tour routes, internationally renowned bike parks, or leisurely biking along national cycle roads. The scenic mountains and valleys of Eastern Norway are perfect for skiing and other winter sports.

COSY TRØNDELAG
The Trøndelag region is the very heart of Norway. Placed right in the middle, with veins stretching out in every possible direction. From here, you can travel to the wild west. The Arctic north. The deep east. Or the happy south. Or you could just stay. For this is the perfect place to learn how to master the noble art of the Norwegian favourite pastime – “kos”.

Time just seems to pass a bit slower here, and many of the locals appear to move at a more laid-back pace. In Trøndelag, “kos” is just a way of life.

But what is “kos” exactly?
It can be the time you spend with your friends exploring the old wooden neighbourhood of Bakklandet in the pulsating student town of Trondheim. The region’s main city is the very capital of “kos”.

And also of jazz, cool contemporary art and funky festivals, cheesemaking monks and guys with big moustaches called “trønderbart”. Not to forget some of the most innovative tech-savvy engineers in Europe.

You might even meet some of the pilgrims that have hiked the famous St. Olav Ways – the main pilgrim path through Norway. The route is becoming one of the most popular long-distance hikes in Northern Europe.

Foodies from all over the world are also heading towards the culinary epicentre that is Trondheim.
The city is known as the “home of the Nordic flavours” – and for good reasons!

A few years back, Trøndelag became a driving force behind the Norwegian local food boom.

In Trondheim, you can try some of the most exquisite examples of this, for instance in Michelin-starred restaurants like Speilsalen, Credo and Fagn or at the annual food festival Trøndersk Matfestival.

But there are plenty of local gems to discover in the rest of the region as well. And yes, it is “kos” to share locally produced delicacies.

Get a taste of grandma’s hearty recipes and indulge in the local cheeses. A good start is the Munkeby Monastery – a heavenly combination of fresh Norwegian milk and traditional French cheese crafting.

SVALBARD – The realm of the polar bear
The Svalbard Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Here, you will find untouched arctic wilderness and unique wildlife in a setting that is both rugged and fragile at the same time.

Svalbard has fascinated travellers for a long time. Rich wildlife, arctic nature, and old mining towns are all found on the islands, which have a stark and eerie beauty that’s all their own.

In addition to a few thousand polar bears, the islands are home to almost 3,000 human inhabitants, over 2,000 of which live in Longyearbyen, the administrative centre and largest settlement of the islands. This small and colourful community has gone from a typical village town to a modern community with different kinds of businesses and industries, and with a surprisingly wide range of cultural activities and opportunities, such as concerts, shows, festivals and exhibitions.

Arctic food is served at a wide range of places to eat and drink of higher standards than you might expect from a small community, among them the world’s northernmost sushi restaurant. Svalbard also has a local beer brewery.

“Svalbard” means “cold coasts” and was first mentioned in Icelandic texts in the 12th century. However, the archipelago has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas at the same latitude. In Longyearbyen, the average temperature ranges from -14°C in winter to 6°C in summer. The most common way to travel to Svalbard is by plane.

Historically, both whaling and trapping have been major activities in the archipelago, but now sustainability is the guiding principle in every way: Nearly two thirds of the surface of Svalbard is protected and consists of several nature reserves, national parks, bird sanctuaries and even a geotopical protected area.

The glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls are all about raw, sublime power. On the other hand, natural wonders such as the northern lights, the midnight sun, the fjords, and quiet national parks highlight Norway’s serene qualities.

In contrast, four of the national parks are defined as marine, which means that 98 percent of the preserved area in these parks are underwater. People have been exploring many of these areas for about 10,000 years, and now it’s your turn.

Waterfalls – CHASING THE PERFECT FLOW
Seeing hundreds of thousands of litres of water cascading down a cliff can be a strangely fascinating and humbling experience. Some of the world’s tallest waterfalls are found in Norway.

According to the World Waterfall Database, 10 of the 30 tallest waterfalls in the world are in Norway. Many of them provide a link between the mountains and the fjords whilst others reside in rivers, and they are all an integral part of the variation in the Norwegian landscape.

Several of the most scenic waterfalls can be seen in the south-western parts of Norway, and the best time to experience them will be in May and June, when the ice and snow from the mountains is melting and the water levels are at their highest.

Vettisfossen, with its single drop of 275 metres, is the tallest unregulated free-falling single-drop waterfall in Norway. It was also voted Norway’s most beautiful waterfall by the readers of the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet in 2014.

Langfoss is another sight to behold, as its waters cascade 600 metres down the mountainside into the Åkrafjord. The tallest waterfalls in Norway drop over 800 metres, and by total overall height, Vinnufallet is the tallest according to World Waterfall Database. It is located in Sunndalen in Northwest, an area with many beautiful waterfalls, including Åmotan and Mardalsfossen.

Other attractions include Vøringsfossen in Måbødalen valley and The Seven Sisters (“De syv søstre”) in Geiranger – named so because it may look like the hair of seven women. The mighty Kjosfossen is one of many highlights on the Flåm Railway, where, during the main tourist season in the summer, actresses dressed as the mythological creature Huldra dance and sing in front of the waterfall.

For Norwegians, waterfalls represent more than a nice photo opportunity. A majority of the waterfalls in the country are, sometimes controversially, used for energy purposes, and powers a lot of local industry.

Glaciers – WITH POWER TO SHAPE THE EARTH
You may climb them, hike them, marvel at them – even ski on them in the middle of the summer. But you can’t fail to feel the massive, untamable power inherent in the glaciers.

Sometimes you need a reminder of the vast forces of nature – that there are some things, even in our modern society, that cannot be tamed. Glacier hiking makes for one of those moments.

Mighty mother nature
Glaciers like the mighty Jostedalsbreen make you feel small in the landscape and can be as unforgiving as they are magnificent. Always be careful when experiencing a glacier or one of its branches up close.

Due to deep crevasses, avalanches, and the constant and unpredictable movement of the ice blocks, you should never go out on a glacier on your own. With professional guides and equipment to ensure your safety, though, hiking a glacier in Norway is an unforgettable experience – a true adventure.

Even when hundreds of meters deep, the ice is always on the move and is strong enough to literally shape the Earth. It was the Ice Age glaciers that carved out Norway’s characteristic fjords, valleys, and steep mountainsides. Remnants of those prehistoric glaciers remain.

EXCITING CAVES AND CAVERNS
A hole through a mountain, underground labyrinths, and a mysterious cave by the sea! Explore Norway’s most impressive caves – with or without a guide. Some are like mountain cathedrals. Others are long and narrow – so narrow that you have to wriggle your way on your stomach in some cases. All of them are pretty awesome.

Zarafshan reserve

Located along the right bank of the Zarafshan River, in the southeast of the Samarkand region, the Zarafshan Reserve has a large territory – more than 2 thousand hectares of land. The tugai forests and the rare Zarafshan pheasant on its territory are strictly protected by the government of the country.

Although the entire area of the reserve is tugai forests, in addition to tugai, fruit trees, willow, poplar, comb, sea buckthorn, reed, licorice, broom, goof and much more can be found here.More than 24 species of mammals make up the local fauna, including fox, badger, jackal, toll hare, porcupine and various rodents.

SWIMMING, WHITE SAND, AND WATER ACTIVITIES
As most coastal areas are free and open to the public, you can combine days of happy beach life with activities like hiking, biking and fishing, Arctic fun under the midnight sun, space enough for everyone, booming urban culture, fjords, and untouched nature – and perhaps some whale spotting.

About 1,800 kilometres separate the sandy beaches of Lista in the southernmost part of Norway from the dunes near Vadsø in the far north.

The world’s second longest shoreline has numerous beaches that are as diverse as the rest of Norway. And if that’s not enough, you have free access to the many lakes covering around three percent of the mainland as well.

While some Norwegian beaches are well-known leisure spots where you’ll meet everyone from local families to foreign surfers, far more just happen to appear in front of you when you’re not even looking – like a paradise you stumble into and get the sense that only you have found.

Gentle climate
The climate and water temperatures are often surprisingly mild in the summer season, thanks to the Gulf Stream that heats up the whole Norwegian coast, even the northern parts. It all depends on what you are used to, of course – some beautiful beaches that face the open sea in Northern and Western Norway are not for wimps – but in Southern Norway, the water temperatures can reach 23 degrees Celsius in high summer.

Warmer temperatures open up for many water and beach activities. Managing the waves on a surfboard or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) is excellent exercise before a hearty picnic in the sand or on the sloping smooth rocks.

Swim in the city – or far away from it all
If you are planning a city break and would like to spend some time by the water, many urban areas have upgraded their beach facilities or created new ones to boost the quality of city life.

On the other hand, at a selection of northern beaches, you can expect to see lots of wildlife, and you might find yourself in the middle of a spontaneous and unexpected whale or sea eagle safari. With 239,057 islands along a shoreline that equals two and a half trips around the globe, relaxing Norwegian beaches will probably never stop to surprise you.

Canyoning – Wet, wild and tons of fun
Take the plunge and jump in! Whizz over steep gorges and blue-green mountain ponds with a zipline. Once you take a seat by a natural waterslide in a wild spa, there is only one way to go – straight down a giant cauldron. Give canyoning a shot. A local guide will take you to deep, dramatic river gorges, where you’ll move forward by swimming, climbing, rappelling and – if you dare – jumping from cliffs into crystal clear pools.

Equipped with a wetsuit, a helmet, shoes, a life jacket and climbing equipment, you will enter a world of pure magic. You won’t get closer to the elements than this and at the same time get the chance to really challenge yourself.

Adrenaline kick guaranteed!

Thousands of years of erosion have created beautiful gorges that are just waiting to be explored.

In Valldal you can go canyoning in the spectacular gorge just below Gudbrandsjuvet, in Trysil, you can marvel at the five waterfalls of Røafallene, in Uvdal you’ll discover the hidden gem of Ølmosjuvet, and in Oppdal the adventure goes to the most exciting parts of Festajuvet. These are just some of the possibilities – you’re never far from a gorge in Norway.

In some places, the season for canyoning lasts from May to October. The trips usually take three to six hours, so you can pick a tour that suits you. And most of the time you can avoid jumping if it’s too much for your nerves.

1. Vestfjorden

Tønsberg is also home to the recreation area Verdens Ende.

3. Arendal to Tønsberg
The charming seaside town of Arendal is located in Southern Norway and it’s a popular summer holiday spot. The stretch from Arendal and northwards to Tønsberg will take you past other cosy towns as well, like Tvedestrand, Risør and Kragerø. “It is a long trip from Arendal to Tønsberg, but you can camp almost anywhere along the route, catch your own fish to eat, and enjoy life and nature.”

4. Hidra
Off the coast of Flekkefjord, the island Hidra offers a beautiful coastal and cultural landscape. Around 600 people live here permanently, but in summer people come here to enjoy lazy days by the sea. “A region known as Norway’s riviera, where you can paddle around the entire island and take in its idyllic settlements along the edge.”

5. Flekkefjord
“The small town is sheltered from the wind by the tall mountains on all sides, and you can kayak the fjord right through Flekkefjord.” Southern Norway’s westernmost city is located midway between Kristiansand and Stavanger. In addition to the lovely seaside vibes, Flekkefjord is known for the Dutch Quarter, charming wooden houses and funky street art.

6. Skipnes in Vesterålen
Located on a car-free island between towering mountains, the quaint fishing village Skipnes has been a popular kayak spot for years. They even host the annual Arctic Sea Kayak Race here. “Lodge in an old fisherman’s cabin and take your time in the unique coastal landscape of Vesterålen.”

The ideal location close to a big city makes it a very popular paddling spot.

9. Finnøy
“An easily accessible area between Haugesund and Stavanger, known for its opportunities for birdwatching – as long as you enjoy the view from the distance, and are careful not to disturb the birds.” The area consists of several islands, 16 of them are inhabited. However, if you hit the trails during weekdays you will probably meet fewer people and get more space for yourself. Or you can take the trip when the landscape get painted in red, yellow, and orange during late summer and autumn. At this time, you can enjoy the scenic surroundings practically undisturbed.

High mountains, steep downhills, and rough terrain – at first sight, Norway may seem like a cycling destination reserved for hard-core road cycling or mountain and downhill biking. And sure, if you want a challenge on two wheels, we can help you with that.

On the other hand, there’s a lot more to Norway than hair-raising peaks. Thanks to a remarkably varied topography, even the more inexperienced couch cyclists among us can find suitable routes. It is a wonderful way to get closer to nature, discover hidden gems in the countryside, and perhaps even experience an extra amount of goodwill from the locals.

Where no-one would believe that someone could live is the title of a Norwegian documentary series that has been one of the most popular tv shows of the last decade. That may sound a bit odd, but keep in mind that a surprising number of Norwegians still live in rural areas, near steep hills connected to the fjords, in the forest or close to large rivers.

The fact that most parts of the country are inhabited and largely accessible opens up a myriad of possibilities for fishing adventures in Norway, both for freshwater and deep sea fishing. Inland, for example in Hemsedal and Gjøvik, you will find some of the finest spots for freshwater fishing in general and fly fishing in particular. Thousands of lakes, rivers and streams are waiting to be explored for wild trout, salmon, grayling, pike, powan and arctic char, to name a few common species.

Skiing
Glide silently through a snow-capped forest, zip down a world-class piste, or find your very own powder paradise in the mountains. Skiing like a Norwegian can be deeply rooted in traditions and rituals. Or you can forget all about that and just focus on the adrenaline­ surging drops and big jumps.

Coming to Norway, you will probably be told the history of legendary Norwegian Sondre Norheim, the inventor of the world’s first relatively stable ski binding and often credited as the pioneer of modern skiing.

However, the world of skiing has moved on since the mid­ 19th century (thank goodness!), and skiing in Norway today could just as well be about snowboarding or twin tip terrain park action – or even snowkiting.

At the high mountain ski resorts the season lasts from autumn through spring, and – if based at a glacier – some are even open through the summer. Whilst there are cross­-country tracks and alpine resorts all over the country, the largest and most popular destinations are located in the mountains in central and eastern Norway. In addition to lifts, slopes and trails, these will offer accommodation, good foods and nightlife.

Of the world’s about 9,000 bird species, around 300 have their natural habitat in Norway, and an additional number of around 200 rarer bird types are found at certain places and times of the year.

“The joy of birdwatching is to explore nature that you would normally miss. The more you delve into this hobby, the more you discover”, he says. “To locate and find a rare specimen is like catching a really big trout. It’s all about tactics, knowledge, and endurance.”

It’s safe to say that the king of the forest is a special part of our wildlife. Chances are you’ll find several items with a moose on them if you visit a tourist shop. And if you embark on a road trip that takes you through the municipality Stor-Elvdal, you’ll get to see one of the world’s largest moose statues.

The silver moose stands in the Bjørå rest area along the road Riksvei 3, about 110 kilometres north of the city Elverum in Eastern Norway. It was built to wake up sleepy drivers and draw attention to the moose living in the area.
