ISLA MAMEY – Isla Mamey is part of the Portobelo district, which is a historic port in the province of Colón and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you visit the pristine Caribbean island of Isla Mamey, you’ll find palm-lined beaches and warm turquoise water. Make time to visit the other areas of Portobelo, as well, for a glimpse at the area’s rich history and cultural traditions, such as the Festival of the Black Christ.

SAN BLAS – Guna Yala is an indigenous territory governed by the Guna indigenous group. The territory consists of a narrow strip of land on the Caribbean side of the country, as well as an archipelago of 365 islands, of which only 50 are inhabited by Guna people. The islands in Guna Yala are also known as the San Blas Islands, which are considered a top destination in Panama due to their well-protected natural beauty, as stewarded by the native Guna people.

The Gunas are known for crafting the famous Molas, a traditional textile made from layers of colored fabric crafted to form patterns and pictures inspired by their cosmogenic beliefs. The molas, which recreate the Guna vision of a colorful and mythological world, make incredible, one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

A trip to Guna Yala won’t look like any commercial vacation you’ve experienced in the past. Instead, you’ll get to embrace the local customs and cuisine. Keep in mind, there’s no internet access, or credit card payments, and US dollars are the only acceptable form of payment. Expect to lodge in thatched huts without heated water, or go the camping route, by renting tents or hammocks. One of the most popular places to stay, however, is aboard a sailboat. This option will allow you to sail from island to island, rather than just choosing one.

ISLA CARENERO – Take a day-trip to Isla Carenero, a small, forested island just 2 minutes by boat from Bocas Town. CINTA COSTERA – La Cinta Costera, or Coastal Beltway, is a massive public space comprising 64 acres of ocean front land, and offering incredible views of both the city and bay. The land reclamation project provides a gathering point for locals and tourists alike, with plenty of space for exploring, eating and lounging.

If you’re looking for a place to work out, this is the spot. With ample bike lanes, running trails and green space, La Cinta Costera is the ideal place for outdoor exercise. Plus, the beltway is partially closed to cars on Sundays, providing real estate for biking. Depending on the time of year, you may encounter a party such as Carnival or the Pride Parade, which happen at the Beltway. For family-friendly activities, consider renting bikes, or exploring the Seafood Market where you can get some of the best, freshest seafood in the city. (We recommend the ceviche!)

BARRO COLORADO ISLAND – Barro Colorado Island is famous for being the most intensely studied tropical forest in the world. It is an artificial island of 1,560 hectares that was created during the construction of the Panama Canal. When the Chagres River was dammed to form Gatún Lake, a vast valley was flooded and one of its hills was cut off by water and became Barro Colorado Island. In 1923, at the request of a group of scientists, this island was declared a Biological Reserve, the first Tropical Rainforest Reserve in America, and a research laboratory was installed. In 1946, Barro Colorado was turned over to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and in 1979, five peninsulas were added on the mainland to declare it a Natural Monument. For more than 100 years, thousands of scientific studies have been carried out in Barro Colorado that have helped us better understand the functioning of the world’s tropical ecosystems and the importance of their inhabitants.

CASCO ANTIGUO – Experience the historical, charming and vibrant neighborhood of Casco Antiguo. Casco Antiguo, also known as Casco Viejo, or the ‘old quarter,” is Panama City’s historic district. Considered a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site, the district dates back to 1673, and features vibrant plazas and picturesque brick-paved streets surrounded by colorful buildings. The area is ideal for walking, discovering history and enjoying a variety of fine cuisine. Come for some of the city’s best gastronomy, culture and photo opps, and stay to mingle with the locals in the heart of the nightlife scene.

TABOGA ISLAND

Located on the Pacific side of the country in the Gulf of Panama, this majestic island is a short 20 kilometers from the capital, making it the best one-day getaway from Panama City.

PANAMA CANAL
Arguably the most famous attraction in Panama is the Panama Canal. As one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal is a must-see for anyone traveling in the country. Built to dramatically decrease the travel time for ships between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, the Canal has seen over 900,000 vessels and counting. At one point this engineering miracle was considered impossible to build, but today, you can see it for yourself.

Did you know that the The Canal uses a lock system to lift ships up 85 feet to the elevation of the canal? How about the fact that it takes 8-10 hours for each ship to make the transit through the canal? Learn about all of this and more at the visitor center at Miraflores, where you can watch an IMAX documentary of the history of the canal narrated by Morgan Freeman. At Miraflores, you’ll also be able to watch the ships in transit just a few meters away.

For another vantage point, visit the Agua Clara Visitor’s Center on the Atlantic side of the Canal in Colón. Here, you’ll be able to see both the ships and the canal. Agua Clara is also where the brand new, larger locks are housed. Consider making a day of it, by canoeing The Chagres river afterwards, where you can visit the indigenous Emberá community in the Panama Canal watershed. Want the full Canal experience? PANAMA VIEJO
Venture to the eastern suburbs of Panama City and you’ll find the remaining parts of the original Panama City, and former capital of the country. Now a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site, the settlement dates back to 1519, when Pedro Arias Dávilla and 100 other inhabitants made it their home. The area now known as Panama Viejo was the first permanent European Settlement on the Pacific Ocean.

When you get there, explore the archeological site of Panama Viejo to see the Old Panama Cathedral, as well as various historical ruins. Next, climb atop the iconic bell tower and look at the Panama City skyline from the city’s original “skyscraper.” As you wander, keep in mind that the layout and scale of Old Panama remains largely unchanged from the original form, and no architectural renovations have been made—this means you’ll have the rare opportunity to walk through history. AGUA CLARA VISITOR’S CENTER
25 minutes from the city of Colon, the Clear Water Locks waits for you and all those who want to know the functioning of a modern engineering work that unites the world, “The Panama Canal.”
From the visitor center you can see a panoramic view where two scenarios are contrasted: Gatun Lake and the extension work already completed.

BOQUETE
Boquete is a natural setting with cool temperatures that invite you to enjoy its exquisite award-winning delicacy worldwide: coffee. The fluttering and chirping of the birds, calls you to walk the paths while mother nature invades your senses. Its hanging bridges and relaxing walks, its crystal clear waters, and its abundant and diverse flowers become part of your experience in Boquete.

PORTOBELO
Portobelo was the most important colonial port in the Panamanian Caribbean and today it is the capital of the Congo culture. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, Portobelo received the galleons from Spain and loaded them with the gold and silver of the Americas. The arrival of the richest fleet in the Caribbean made it the commercial hub of the region and the target of enemy nations, pirates and corsairs. Many of them, such as Sir Francis Drake, met their end and are still in this place. The Spanish soldiers are gone, but the culture-rich Congo community remains. Their dances and songs are now Portobelo’s greatest wealth, and the old forts are Portobelo’s greatest stages.

Together with San Lorenzo, Portobelo was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

SAN LORENZO
San Lorenzo guards the ruins of the most powerful Spanish fort in Panama, between the jungle and the sea. Built in 1601 by orders of the King of Spain, the Castillo de San Lorenzo el Real guarded the entrance and exit of the main route of the Americas. Countless riches were transported by the Chagres River, which, together with Camino de Cruces by land, formed a vital communication route between the two oceans. Its massive walls did not stop the attack of Welsh privateer Henry Morgan, who captured it in 1671 before heading to Panama City. Today its ruins are part of an exuberant setting of tropical rainforest, which also surrounds the remains of the old Canal fortifications.

EL CAÑO ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
El Caño Archaeological Park shows what Panama’s ancient societies were like before the conquest. The archaeological site, where excavations and studies are still being carried out, includes an extensive necropolis with funerary mounds and a ceremonial center with alignments of basalt columns that were used between the years 700 and 1000 CE. A new site museum presents the most recent archaeological discoveries , which include tombs of chiefs dressed in gold and thousands of pieces in polychrome ceramics. The largest tomb contained at least 25 bodies: the most important was covered with pieces of gold and copper, and pieces carved in stone, bone and ivory. The abundance and quality of the finds have made El Caño the most important archaeological site in Panama.

PANAMA RAILWAY
The Panama Railway traverses the Isthmus of Panama and it was the world’s first transcontinental railroad. It was inaugurated in 1855 before the Canal was built, and it transported thousands of people and tons of cargo between the city of Aspinwal (present-day Colon) and Panama City. During the Gold Rush, it was boarded by countless adventurers and settlers from the east coast of North America bound for California. Seduced by the promise of fortune, these travelers made the railroad the most profitable of all time. Each adult had to pay an exorbitant fee of 25 dollars (more than 800 dollars today) for just a four-hour, 50-mile trip. The railroad later played an essential role during the construction of the Canal, and today it moves containers between the Atlantic and Pacific ports. In its passenger train, it is possible to make the journey between the two oceans in one hour, through the forest of Soberania National Park and bordering Gatun Lake and the Panama Canal.

Panama is the isthmus connecting Central America and South America, and offers access to both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. In fact, because of its snake-like shape, you could feasibly start your day watching the sun rise on the Caribbean, and end, watching it set on Panama’s Pacific. Despite its name, Isla Grande is a small island off of Panama’s Caribbean coast in the province of Colon. The beautiful and peaceful island is home to around 1,000 inhabitants, mostly of African descent. Adding to the relaxed vibe of the island is the fact that there are no roads, only foot paths. Come to enjoy a truly Caribbean atmosphere, as well as local Afro-Caribbean cuisine characterized by flavorful ingredients and spices such as curry, coconut, fresh seafood and local vegetables. You can also expect to find remote beaches surrounded by palm trees, white sand, and turquoise waters.

Plan for a relaxing beach experience when you come to Isla Grande. During certain times of year, you’ll find excellent surfing waves on the northern and western side of the island. Other times, you’ll find an ideal setting for diving, snorkeling and spearfishing on the southern coast. Choose to buy a day pass for the more populated beaches, or venture further out for the chance to have a beach all to yourself.

PEARL ISLANDS
Once a popular tourist destination for the rich and famous, the Pearl Islands have become more accessible for others who want to experience the tremendous natural beauty of the area. The Pearl Islands archipelago consists of over 200 islands and islets—mostly uninhabited—off the Pacific coast in the Gulf of Panama. The largest of the islands is Isla Del Rey, but tourist favorites include Contadora Island, with over 13 beaches, and Isla Saboga. On a trip to the Pearl Islands, you can expect to find beautiful white sand beaches, opportunities for scuba diving and whale watching,
as well as well-preserved nature and marine life.

There are many ways to enjoy the picturesque beaches of the Pearl Islands. Whale watching tours during whale mating season between July and October are popular in the area, as well as windsurfing and paddle boarding. For those who enjoy snorkeling, expect to see massive schools of fish in the crystal clear waters—like, up to 50,000! For a traditional beach day of swimming, restaurant-hopping and lounging, check out the resort area of Cantadora Island with more than 13 beaches and a wide array of hotels, resorts, condos and villas. While there, you can also visit one of the sailing schools to go for a sail, or enjoy premium fishing all year around. Next, head to one of the more remote islands for a different experience. In less-developed Saboga, for example, you can hike jungle trails and interact with the local people that live in the Saboga village.

GOLFO DE CHIRIQUÍ
The Gulf of Chiriquí extends along Panama’s Pacific coast from the Costa Rican border to the Azuero Peninsula. It offers abundant vegetation, charming white-sand islands and one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific, making it one of the best destinations for big-game fishing, diving and snorkeling. The gulf is also home to one of Central America’s densest mangrove forests, as well as Panama’s largest island, Coiba Island. On your visit, you can tour within the islands and mangrove areas of the National Marine Park. Plus, due to the rich biodiversity of the gulf, you’ll also find lots of conservation projects that research and protect the area.

The Gulf of Chiriquí National Marine Park comprises all of the islands in the gulf, as well as the reefs, mangroves and animal life. This protected area of the country is one of the best sites for birdwatching in Panama. In addition, the gulf is known for being one of the world’s most prolific big game and sport fishing grounds, especially on Hannibal Bank and Isla Montuosa.

That said, the area is growing thanks to the incredible surf and beaches. Surfing is the main event in Playa Venao. The south-facing beach is situated perfectly for south swells. But if you’re not into surfing, there’s still plenty for you here. You can go deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, diving, stand-up paddle boarding, and whale watching. For land-based activities, you’ve got opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, yoga and eco-spas, or visit the nearby weekly Pedasí market.

TABOGA ISLAND
Isla Taboga, or the Island of Flowers, is a volcanic island characterized by rich tropical plant life, as well as beautiful beaches and soft sand. Located on the Pacific side of the country in the Gulf of Panama, this majestic island is a short 20 kilometers from the capital, making it the best one-day getaway from Panama City.

Take in the beauty of the island by starting your trip with a hike to one of Isla Taboga’s highest points, Cerro Vigia or Cerro de la Cruz. Next, explore the colorful and historic Spanish-founded town, which is also home to the second oldest church in the Western hemisphere. After all that exploration, take a load off at one of the laid-back Taboga Island beaches, or grab a drink at one of the quaint beach bars nearby.

SANTA CATALINA
Once a small fishing village with relatively few visitors, Santa Catalina has become a world-renowned surfing destination for pros and beginners alike. Located on the Pacific coast of the Veraguas province, Santa Catalina is the place to be if you like to surf—or, if you’ve ever wanted to learn. Just keep in mind, the village is still minimally developed, with just a handful of restaurants and accommodations, as well as a grocery store and surfing schools.

Experienced surfers should head to the black sand beaches of Playa Santa Catalina, where you’ll find powerful waves that can surpass nine meters and feature great tubes. Punta Brava is another must-visit for experienced surfers, offering strong breaks and great tubes. Beginners, and those who want to give surfing a try, should head to Playa Estero, where the waves are smaller. You can also hit up one of the area’s surfing schools to rent boards or take lessons. Besides surfing, Santa Catalina is also the departure point for most tours to Coiba National Park.

ISLA BASTIMENTOS
Isla Bastimentos is one of the largest islands in Panama, and provides a laid back alternative to the busy streets and bars found in the center of Bocas Town. Just a ten-minute water taxi ride from Isla Colon, Isla Bastimentos is home to many wonderful beaches including the picturesque Wizard Beach, which you can reach by jungle path, as well as coral-ringed Polo Beach, where the water is calm and visitors are few. For one of the best places to snorkel, check out Coral Cay. Red Frog Beach, named after the population of small red frogs that inhabit the nearby forest, is also home to a popular bar where you can grab a beer and spend the day by the beach. Then, on the western tip of the island, between the forest and the sea, you’ll find Old Bank, home to the Afro-Caribbean Guari community.

Also part of Isla Bastimentos are the Cayos Zapatillas—two beautiful uninhabited islands. One of the cayes, Cayo Zapatilla II, is open to visitors, and it’s definitely worth a visit.

ISLA COLON
Isla Colón is the most populated island in the Bocas Del Toro archipelago, and home to some of the area’s top destinations for ecological wonder and beach travel. Isla Colón is also where you’ll find the main city and hub of the province: Bocas Town. If you decide to stay on another island in Bocas, you’ll want to come back to this area for ATMs and access to groceries stores.

In Isla Colón you can find Playa Estrella, also known as “Starfish Beach,” a protected eco-tourism destination, where you can also experience the area’s Afro-Caribbean culture and food. (Just remember not to touch the starfish, please.). Next, head to Playa Bluff, for world-class surfing and a chance to learn about the local sea turtle conservation efforts. PORTOBELO
Portobelo was the most important colonial port in the Panamanian Caribbean and today it is the capital of the Congo culture. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, Portobelo received the galleons from Spain and loaded them with the gold and silver of the Americas. The arrival of the richest fleet in the Caribbean made it the commercial hub of the region and the target of enemy nations, pirates and corsairs. Many of them, such as Sir Francis Drake, met their end and are still in this place. The Spanish soldiers are gone, but the culture-rich Congo community remains. Their dances and songs are now Portobelo’s greatest wealth, and the old forts are Portobelo’s greatest stages.

Together with San Lorenzo, Portobelo was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

ISLA IGUANA WILDLIFE REFUGE, PEDASÍ
Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge has 40 hectares of reefs that surround the island and protects a colony of approximately 5,000 frigates. Among the activities you can do here are hiking, whale watching (humpback whale), scuba diving, snorkeling, bird watching, camping, swimming, picnicking and sport fishing. CAYOS ZAPATILLA
The Zapatilla Keys are part of the 13,226 hectares that make up the Bastimento Island National Marine Park. You can find 8 different species of coral reefs, variety of colored fish, hiking and turtle nesting.

RED FROG BEACH, ISLA BASTIMENTOS
Known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, the name of this beach is due to the amount of red frogs that can be observed on the way down the path to the beach. CONTADORA ISLAND IN PEARL ISLANDS

Iconic Experiences

COIBA NATIONAL PARK
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, Coiba Marine Park is a marine reserve located off of Panama’s Pacific coast in the Gulf of Chiriquí. Once a penal colony, access to the island was historically limited, allowing much of the area’s natural resources to survive untouched. Today, the marine park boasts some of the greatest biological diversity in the world.

Coiba is a world-class diving destination on the same corridor as the Galapagos Islands, offering access to Bahia Damas Reef, the largest reef on the western coastline of the American continent. A dive there means you’ll have the chance to see manta rays, whales and hammerhead sharks. If you come between December and April, you might just see some of the biggest fish in the ocean, the whale sharks!

Not into diving? You can still experience the local wildlife by taking a whale watching tour, or a hike through the island’s untouched rainforest. Look out for over 147 bird species, as well as monkeys, crocodiles and iguanas. And, if surfing’s your thing, you’ve come to the right place. Coiba’s surrounding beaches offer some of the best, most consistent waves in Central America.

ANCON HILL
Enjoy the best panoramic views of both the capital and the Canal from Ancon Hill, the highest point in Panama City. This is also where you can behold the true essence of Panama: a city enveloped in nature. Ancon Hill is the remnant of the eroded core of an ancient volcano that served as a quarry during the construction of the Canal. Today, it’s completely covered by the rainforest and home to keel-billed toucans, green iguanas, geoffroy’s tamarins and other amazing wildlife.

Ancon Hill is 199 meters (650 feet) from base to summit, and will take you about 30 minutes to hike. When you get to the top, you’ll be able to see the old, rebuilt and modern cities, all from one point—plus views of the Panama bay! Besides the incredible views, a climb to the top means you’ll also get to see the largest flag in the country. The massive flag was installed there in 1979 to celebrate the treaty that returned the Canal Zone to Panama, and has been flying there ever since.

After you check out the permanent and temporary indoor interactive exhibits, venture into the many outdoor spaces such as the Garden of Microdiversity, The Garden of Evolution and The Garden of Crops. While you’re out there, you may even be able to catch a view of ships passing through the Canal and under the Bridge of the Americas.

SANTA FE
Santa Fe sits in the highlands of Veraguas, an ecological paradise, home to a wide variety of animals and plants including orchids. Our rainforest is ideal for backcountry hiking and birdwatching. This beautiful place has over 50 waterfalls to explore, swim, and reconnect with nature.

SAN SAN POND SACK
San San Pond Sack is one of the most important wetlands of the Caribbean Mesoamerican coast. NATIONAL PARKS
It is interesting that a city like Panama that has execcionales natural areas a few kilometers from the center, where you can from sports activities such as hiking trails, fishing, observe birds of the tropical humid forest, make an expedition in the waters of the Lake Gatun, go camping on the Espiritu del Bosque trail in the Soberanía National Park or simply appreciate the scenic beauty of the natural areas bordering the Panama Canal full of colonial history, the railroad and the construction of the Panamanian maritime route El Canal.

EL CAÑO ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
El Caño Archaeological Park shows what Panama’s ancient societies were like before the conquest. The archaeological site, where excavations and studies are still being carried out, includes an extensive necropolis with funerary mounds and a ceremonial center with alignments of basalt columns that were used between the years 700 and 1000 CE. A new site museum presents the most recent archaeological discoveries , which include tombs of chiefs dressed in gold and thousands of pieces in polychrome ceramics. The largest tomb contained at least 25 bodies: the most important was covered with pieces of gold and copper, and pieces carved in stone, bone and ivory. The abundance and quality of the finds have made El Caño the most important archaeological site in Panama.

SOBERANÍA NATIONAL PARK
Soberanía National Park is the most accessible national park from the city, and protects forests that include some of the most acclaimed sites for bird watching in Panama. It is situated along the Canal and crossed by the Chagres River, and offers excellent opportunities to explore the tropical forest. Its 22,300 hectares are home to more than 500 species of birds, including toucans, hummingbirds, parrots and even the powerful harpy eagle. The trails of Plantation and Pipeline roads are the perfect places to get into the tropical nature of Panama and marvel at its exotic inhabitants, as are the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center and the Summit Municipal Park.

BARRO COLORADO ISLAND
Barro Colorado Island is famous for being the most intensely studied tropical forest in the world. It is an artificial island of 1,560 hectares that was created during the construction of the Panama Canal. When the Chagres River was dammed to form Gatún Lake, a vast valley was flooded and one of its hills was cut off by water and became Barro Colorado Island. In 1923, at the request of a group of scientists, this island was declared a Biological Reserve, the first Tropical Rainforest Reserve in America, and a research laboratory was installed. In 1946, Barro Colorado was turned over to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and in 1979, five peninsulas were added on the mainland to declare it a Natural Monument. For more than 100 years, thousands of scientific studies have been carried out in Barro Colorado that have helped us better understand the functioning of the world’s tropical ecosystems and the importance of their inhabitants.

ANTON VALLEY
El Valle is the crater of an ancient volcano. At the bottom of this crater, 1,900 feet above sea level, is the town of El Valle. The presence of this village makes it one of the few permanently inhabited volcanic craters in the world. Here it is possible to meet the tiny and unique Panamanian golden frog, an amphibian found nowhere else in the world which is studied and protected in a local scientific center to save it from extinction. Here you can also walk trails through the forest, discover waterfalls and climb the hills that form the edge of the immense crater. From them, you get spectacular panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains.

BARU VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK
The Baru Volcano National Park has the highest peak in Panama and is the best place for mountain hiking. The imposing Baru Volcano emerges from the park’s 35,000 acres, exceeding in height all the mountains of the country. Its slopes, from top to bottom, are surrounded by 5 different ecosystems and are crossed by numerous streams. Its trails offer the opportunity to go deep into the cloud forest and to find through the mist the natural inhabitants of the park. At the end of the route, there is the cusp of the volcano: 11,400 feet above sea level. The summit is the perfect place to try to get a view of both oceans, camp under the stars and marvel at a glorious sunrise over the clouds, from the rooftop of Panama.

LA AMISTAD INTERNATIONAL PARK
La Amistad International Park is an extensive jungle located at the top of the central mountain range and is home to the mythical resplendent quetzal. Its 991,000 acres are shared by Panama and Costa Rica, through a great international effort to preserve the incredible natural wealth of this jungle. This territory is crisscrossed by mountain trails that go deep into mist-covered forests. This is also home to the endangered tapir and 600 other species of birds. Three indigenous groups, the Naso, Bribri and Ngäbe-Buglé, also live within La Amistad. These groups reside in small towns and maintain a traditional lifestyle, in tune with the exuberant nature of this unique place.

La Amistad International Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

CHAGRES NATIONAL PARK
The Chagres National Park is the forest that shelters the source of the most important river in Panama and is the perfect place for the most daring hikers. Its 309,000 acres are crossed by countless streams and waterfalls, which lead the water to the mighty Chagres River and to Lake Alajuela, formed when a dam was built on the river. Its rugged terrain is crowned with hills and peaks covered in cloud forest.

One of them is the 3,300 feet tall Cerro Jefe, which offers spectacular views of the Canal and, with a bit of luck, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This forest also holds the remains of 30 miles of the Camino Real, the colonial route where gold and silver were carried through the Isthmus during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

BOCAS DEL TORO
Representing Panama’s vibrant Caribbean culture, the Bocas Del Toro province comprises part of Panama’s mainland, as well as a chain of islands in the Caribbean Sea. In Bocas, expect to find a relatively undeveloped landscape, and a friendly, laid-back vibe. Bocas is also home to a tropical rainforest, some of the area’s indigenous cultures, like the Ngöbe and NasoTjerdi, as well as many of the country’s most popular beaches. There are three main islands in Bocas Del Toro: The main island, Isla Colon; Isla Bastimentos, which is one of the largest islands in Panama;
and the small island of Isla Carenero.

Bocas Del Toro is home to a natural laboratory for evolutionary study and climate change, as well as Panama’s first Mission Blue Hope Spot, a program that focuses on the rehabilitation and preservation of the marine ecosystem.

For more accessible marine activity, head to Isla Bastimentos National Park, where you can surf, snorkel and dive.
