Pattaya is a popular Beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand, just 150 km southeast of Bangkok –a mere two-hour drive. Pattaya’s pulsating nightlife is well known, but local authorities have, in recent years, improved the quality of the beaches and reinvented the resort as a more family-friendly destination.

Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors are drawn each year to Pattaya to windsurf, water ski, swim, sunbathe, snorkel, sail, or take trips to nearby Islands. Other activities include Bungee jumping, Cycling, skydiving, go-Karting, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), and Paintball. Golfers, both novice and expert, are well catered to as well, with a wide selection of golf courses around Pattaya. Another major draw for visitors to Pattaya is the wide selection of restaurants serving some of Thailand’s freshest Seafood. Due to the high number of expatriate foreigners in Pattaya, there is also an excellent selection of authentic foreign eateries serving French, Italian, Swiss, German, Hungarian, Scandinavian, English, Indian, Arabic, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine.

The image of Buddha sat cross-legged, with one hand resting on his knee and the other in his lap, is engraved into the northern face of Khao Chi Chan. The solitary limestone hill was once used to supply the local construction industry with materials. In 1996, to commemorate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s golden jubilee, the 109-metre-tall and 70-metre-wide image was carved into the rock and then marked out in gold on the recommendation of the then Supreme Patriarch, who felt it was otherwise a waste of a perfectly good (and particularly beautiful) mountain.

The image was designed using computer software and then drawn onto the side of Khao Chi Chan using a laser. This was done entirely at night, so that the light of the laser could be seen more clearly. During the day, the image would be fixed and adjusted. Finally, with the drawing completed, gold was used to fill in the sculpture.

Ubon Ratchathani province features plateaus and mountain ranges with the Mun River running through the middle. The region where Ubon Ratchathani borders both Cambodia and Laos has been coined “the Emerald Triangle” in recognition of its magnificent green landscapes. Adding to Ubon Ratchathani’s natural appeal, Phu Chong Nayoi and Pha Taem national parks are two of Isan’s most unspoiled and unvisited natural preserves. Ubon Ratchathani, the north-east’s largest city, is also a wonderful place to witness the annual candle festival, a charming Buddhist celebration.

Ubon Ratchathani has many interesting and beautiful places to visit such as Pha Taem National Park, which is famous for its prehistoric rock paintings, Sam Pan Boak or the Grand Canyon of Thailand, Huai Sai Yai Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Northeastern Thailand, Kaeng Saphuee Public park, Wat Tham Khuha Sawan, and Wat Phrathat Nong Bua.

For those who are enthusiastic about local festivals, the Candle Festival on Khao Phansa Day is the most important event of the province, in which huge and elaborately carved candles are paraded throughout the city.

Hat Khu Duea

Hat Khu Duea is a sand beach on the bank of the Mun River. It is located in Jaeramair Sub-district, Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, which is around 12 kilometers from the city center. There are a lot of restaurants on the raft around Hat Khu Duea. It is a place where people in Ubon Rathchathani Province and tourists like to hang out. This is not only because the food here is fresh, tastes good, and has many dishes to choose, but also because the surrounding view is nice and pleasant, especially during the drying season, when the tide of the Mun River is on the ebb, revealing a long orange beach along the bank. There are many famous dishes in Hat Khu Duea.

The first recommended dish is Goong Ten (dancing shrimps). It is said among the tourists that those who visit this beach but do not order this dish have not actually arrive at Hat Khu Duea. Small and big fresh shrimps jump and dance as if they want to invite the tourists to try its delicious taste mixed with sharp flavoring. The next dish is grilled fish. Big snake-head fish are mixed with spices before being grilled until they are perfectly cooked.

Those who taste the grilled fish will feel the nice smell of spices, together with the fish’s sweet taste. This dish is so nice to try. The other recommended dish is baked shrimp and vermicelli. Big fresh shrimps are hidden in sticky but soft vermicelli with the smell of galangal and lemongrass. It can be eaten with warm rice or with alcohol drinks.

Kaeng Sam Phan Bok

Kaeng Sam Phan Bok or the three thousand holes is located at Ban Song Khon, Amphoe Pho Sai. They are the rapids under the Mekong River eroded by the swirling water in the flooding season until they turned to have more than 3,000 holes or Bok. Bok is a Laotian word which means a deep hole of the rapids under the Mekong River. These rapids can be noticed in the dry season when there is no water. It presents a wonder of nature in the middle of the Mekong River, which was later called by the villagers the “Mekong Grand Canyon”. The most suitable period to visit Kaeng Sam Phan Bok is during December – May.

It has a beautiful rock whose shape looks like a dog’s head. One of the fables told is that in the past a city ruler was impressed with these gorgeous rapids, so he had an aristocrat conduct some research. After that, a gold treasure was found so they let a dog protect the entrance before the city ruler came out of the hole. When discovering the treasure, the greedy city ruler was afraid that the aristocrat would take a part of it, so he got out through another exit and let the dog wait until it died.

Some other fables told were that the son of the Naga in the Mekong River excavated the land to build another creek and assigned a dog to protect the entrance while digging until it died and turned into stone.

After spending a day out on the easy Bang Saen Beach, a visit to Chon Buri province, a pit stop for tasty delicacies is quite an excellent idea.

Less than a mile from the relaxing beach, this small section of Sukhumvit Road is always busy with cars moving. Parking space is quite rare here, but people keep coming anyway. It is Nong Mon Market, the old charming Shopping venue in town.

You will be amazed by a wide array of merchandises offered here. Most of them are processed seafood such as sun-dried squids, dried shrimps, dried razor clam, shrimp Paste, and fish sauce. Take a stroll, and you will be lured by the mouthwatering smell of freshly cooked dishes such as deep-fried fish, Hor Mok (Thai curry fish custard, fish cake, and Hoi Jo Pu (deep fried crab meat roll). Tons of Thai-style snacks ranging from sweet banana crisps, sweet taro crisps, sweetened fruit preserves to other typical desserts will pick you up promptly, for sure.

The signature desserts offered at Nong Mon is Kanom Chak (grilled sweet sticky rice flour in nipa palm leaves) and Khao Lam (sweet custardy sticky rice in bamboo trunk). Kanom Chak stalls can be noticed from smoke billowing from stoves while rows of the bamboo trunk are the mark of Khao Lam. If you buy Khao Lam, do not forget to ask the vendors to crack them open with a hammer or a knife for the ease of opening the bamboo and digging the treasure kept inside.

Phuket province is located in Southern Thailand. It is the biggest Island of Thailand and sits on the Andaman Sea. The nearest province to the north is Phang-nga and the nearest provinces to the east are Phang-nga and Krabi.

Phuket has a large Chinese influence, so you will see many Chinese shrines and Chinese Restaurants around the city. A Chinese Vegetarian Festival is held there every year. While the Chinese community is quite big, there are many other ethnicities bringing all their traditions and festivals from all over the world to Phuket.

Being a big island, Phuket is surrounded by many magnificent Beaches such as Rawai, Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata Yai, Kata Noi, and Mai Khao. Laem Phromthep Viewpoint is said to feature the most beautiful sunsets in Thailand.

It isn’t all just beaches though, there is also fantastic classical architecture such as the Goom Restaurant. That and the very welcome atmosphere and the famous Phuket nightlife, you can see why the island is a hotspot for tourists in Thailand.

Two Heroines Monument

Time for a bit of Phuket history. Yes, history.. Phuket has a rich cultural heritage, although it’s not so apparent if you’re staying in a hotel by the sea. Until tourism arrived on the scene around 30 years ago, hardly anyone lived at the beaches except some fishermen and farmers. The main towns of Phuket were at Phuket Town and Thalang. Phuket Town only became the main town in Phuket in the late 19th century. Before that Thalang had been the biggest population center. Almost every visitor to Phuket will pass through Thalang on the way South from the airport, and about 6km south of Thalang you can see the Phuket Heroines Monument – in the middle of the main road on a traffic circle – you know, it’s that statue of 2 ladies holding swords.

Having driven past the Heroines maybe 1,000 times I decided last weekend to actually stop and have a closer look at the monument. Stopping and getting to a statue in the middle of the busiest road in Phuket is not easy! I was coming from town, heading North.. there’s not a lot of parking since this is the main road. I passed the monument, u-turned and found a parking spot outside the Tesco mini-store about 100m North of the circle. It then took 5 minutes to cross over the road to the Heroines! Phuket has been called “Bangkok by the Sea” and on the main roads you can see why! But eventually a gap came in the traffic and narrowly avoiding a large truck I got across to the Heroines monument.

In the old quarter, Wat Phra Sing and Wat Chedi Luang are lighted up and allow their sacred architectures to glow out of the dark deep blue sky. You will see the ancient Temples, which differ from during the day time. Wat Umong, known for its tunnels under the temple complex, will be covered by a magical atmosphere during twilight. If you go a little further to the adjacent doi suthep, you will certainly be amazed by the magnificent view of Chiang Mai at night with fewer tourists.

While making your way through the darkness, you may find many food stalls come to life. Sundae Ice Cream in Ton Lam Yai Market offers Ruammit – chilled sweet coconut milk and tapioca noodle, with jackfruit and tiny boba.
THE ADVENTURE THROUGH BANGKOK’S CHINATOWN

Bangkok’s Chinatown is known as a bustling Shopping district and a popular street food destination. Although the busy enclave is usually chaotic during the day, which always frustrates visitors, things get a bit easier in the evening.

From Hua Lamphong MRT station, you can take a stroll to Wat Traimit and pay homage to the country’s biggest gold Buddha statue. Your Yaowarat (Chinatown) excursion can start from the nearby Chinatown Gate. Then, you are wandering through a mazy district which is crowded with people and vehicles and has a lot of retail shops to offer.

After the business hours, Yaowarat turns more vivid when street food vendors set up their stalls and welcome you into the world of street food. Try the iconic dishes like Yen-Ta-Fo, a sweet noodle soup with sweet Red Sauce, Seafood barbeque, sweet noodle of J Muay, Nai-Ek roll noodle, etc. Complete your food excursion with some Chinese dessert at Kia Meng or Sweettime@Chinatown.

Between these yummy stops, visit the Chinese cultural landmarks such as Wat Kangkorn Kamalawat, Guan-Yin Goddess at Thian Fah Foundation, or Guan-U Shrine at the Old Market.

Walk south and you will be among a flower market at Pak Khlong Talad. Although the city’s biggest flower market has moved, the remaining flower shops and stalls are still vivid enough.

At the foot of the Memorial Bridge, you can see the Monument of King Rama I who founded Bangkok seated on the throne. Rest your legs at the park, and watch the city glows at night. You may even love the atmosphere during the night more than at the day.

How to get there: Take Bangkok’s MRT to Hua Lamphong. You can either walk from there or catch a taxi or Tuk-Tuk. Yaowarat is a short ride away.

GET A GLIMPSE OF BANGKOK’S LOCAL SHOPPING AT KHLONG SAN MARKET

After spending a while in Bangkok, you may notice the customary lifestyle of local ladies and gentlemen. They prefer a common thread of fun, affordable and a bit casual clothing. An excellent place to observe the local trend of fashion is probably Khlong San Market.

Situated next to Khlong San pier by the Chao Phraya River, Khlong San Market is a local shopping area operated by the locals for the locals. It does not especially cater to tourists but exploring it is fun. You will also get the authentic experience to see the latest fashion trend in town. Long rows of clothing and garment shops and boutique outlets run from the river bank all the way to Charoen Nakhon Road, offering trendy jeans, colorful outfits, knock-off shoes, and bags. Although the stuff is not pricey, make sure you bargain first.

After done with shopping session, you might head for the food section. At dusk, the market turns busy when the locals pick up dinners to home or enjoy the street food right there. Though there is nothing special for fashion items, the market is outstanding especially for the food.

Get ready to be lured by local delicacies like Bua Loy Khai Khem (the rice flour balls with salted egg in coconut milk), steamed chives dumpling or Kui Chai, Hainan rice noodle, coconut milk ice cream, and Hoy Tod.
