Time for leisure to explore the charming town of Qaqortoq on your own, which is considered a sub-arctic Riviera. You can join one of our wonderful optional excursions:

Excursion to Hvalsoy Church
Hvalsoy or Whale Island is the location of a church that was probably built in the 14th century and is the best-preserved church in Greenland from that period. People gathered there from far and wide to attend Christian festivals throughout the year. The fells and the fjord which surround the church have not changed at all over the centuries and are very scenic. Southern Greenland holds the ruins of the Norse Settlements and their Inuit neighbours. Recently, UNESCO inscribed this old Viking farming landscape as a world heritage.

In the afternoon transfer by zodiac boat to Narsaq, the third most populated town in South Greenland, with about 1500 inhabitants. You will have free time to visit the local market, fur shops, hunters harbour and the Greenlandic folk museum or go for a walk to do some shopping.
Overnight in Hotel .

Day 04:Qalerliq adventure glacier camp & walk on ice – Narsaq B-L
In the morning we set off for Qaleraliq camp, towards the Inland Icecap. We will arrive at a cosy, enchanting camp set on a sandy beach, which contrasts with a spectacular view of three glacier tongues.

We navigate on a RIB boat along the glacier fronts, admiring the beauty of their vertical ice walls and numerous icebergs along their 10 kilometers descent to the sea. The glacier fronts extended in only one, but the dramatic progress of climate change divided it into three glacier tongues. From there, we start the glacier hike. An impressive trek using crampons, suitable for all travellers, takes us on one of the oldest masses of ice on the planet. We explore its crevasses, drains, caves, seracs and other ice formations, which give an incredible labyrinthine quality to this glacier.

An expert mountain guide and glacier specialist will be in charge of the excursion to ensure the right equipment and the safety of the group, while he shares with us his knowledge about the characteristics of the glaciers in the South of Greenland. A unique experience, exciting and original surprising both for first-timers and more experienced glacier hikers. This is one of the most impressive sights and one of the best excursions in all of Greenland. Picnic lunch on the ice or at the camp depending on conditions.

In the afternoon, transfer by zodiac boat to Narsaq. We will be surprised by enormous icebergs falling off from the Eqaloruutsit Glacier and floating through the Sermilik Fjord. Sometimes they are blocking access to Narsaq ports.

Overnight in Hotel.

Day 05:City of Narsaq and Igaliku (Gardar) B-D
In the morning we have time off to walk around the city of Narsaq and discover the beauty of its colourful buildings or visit the local market, fur shops, hunters harbour, the Greenlandic museum. Surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes, you can enjoy a drink with the local people and discover the modern Inuit’s way of life.

After that, we will navigate by zodiac boat to Itilleq. Once we disembark from the boat we start an easy hike across the “Kongevejen”, or Path of the Kings. Our destination will be the idyllic Igaliku, a small Inuit settlement inhabited by no more than 40 people. This place is famous for being the most beautiful settlement in South Greenland, and know by the unique architecture of the Igaliku stone houses. We discover the ruins of Gardar, the archdiocese and religious capital of Viking Greenland. The area has been recently declared part of the UNESCO world heritage list. You see the Norse bishop’s farm, the largest in all of Greenland, and the setting of Anders Olsen’s farm.
Overnight in Hotel.

Day 06:Excursion in Igaliku & boat trip to Qooroq Ice Fjord B
In the morning, we can enjoy the spectacular views of Einarsfjord, a surprising fjord which is one of the few in Greenland that can’t impress visitors with big icebergs. However green hills provide guests with a warm relaxing and quiet environment. We hike back to Itilleq where we embark in the RIB boat and start a sea excursion to Qooroq fjord. This is probably the most spectacular glacier in the South of Greenland. We will navigate among blocks of ice until the density of ice is such that we can no longer continue. It’s an incredible sight of ice floating around us. We continue our navigation by zodiac boat to Narsarsuaq. Car transfer to Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Overnight in Hotel.

Day 07:Qassiarsuk, the Viking Greenland and Tasiusaq “the iceberg bay” B-L
Transfer in RIB boat through the Tunulliarfik Fjord, usually covered by icebergs, to Qassiarsuk. Visit of the church ruins and the settlement of Eric the Red comprising the old Brattahlid, capital of Viking Greenland, and where Erik the Red settled in 985. Walk through the village of about 50 inhabitants, mostly farmers. This Norse and Greenlandic core farming area was inscribed in 2017 on UNESCO’s world heritage list under the title: Kujataa Greenland, a Norse and Inuit farming landscape on the edge of the ice cap.

Qassiarsuk area represents the most comprehensive and rich example of both Norse and Greenlandic farming history. It contains ruins of large cattle-based Norse farms and their numerous satellite sites including, not least, Erik the Red’s Brattahlid. It was also here that Otto Frederiksen in 1924 established the first sheep farm after Igaliku, founding today’s settlement of Qassiarsuk.

Later on a 4×4 trip to the beautiful Tasiusaq farm, where seven people live in notable isolation next to the Sermilik Fjord, which is almost always blocked by icebergs coming from the Eqaloruutsit glacier. Picnic at Tasiusaq farm.

Optional Excursion: Kayak Excursion in the “iceberg bay”, a 2-hour sea kayaking trip for beginners among icebergs and ice in one of the safest and most delightful places in Greenland.

On our way back we pass the old wooden Zion church. Overnight in Ilulissat.

Day 2 Ilulissat Icefjord and Sermermiut
It is a big day today. You came here to see glaciers and icebergs. And you do not mean the small ones, you mean the massive ones . Standing in front of the enormous Ilulissat Icefjord will make you feel small and humble. An endless amount of ice pushing down from the glacier Sermeq Kujalleq towards the sea, where ice is calving constantly creating those majestic icebergs floating in Disko Bay. Here, at the Ilulissat Icefjord World Heritage Site, we also stop at Sermermiut, an abandoned Inuit settlement, which had been used by Saqqaq, Early Dorset and Thule cultures. Our guide will give you insights of the Inuit culture and will answer your questions.
Overnight in Ilulissat.

Day 3: Ilulissat – Disko Bay – Ilulissat (By Boat)
Today you will head out by boat into Disko Bay and visit the gigantic floating icebergs, so have your cameras locked and loaded. These frozen giants have calved from the most productive glacier of the Northern Hemisphere, the Sermeq Kujalleq. It annually calves 35 km³ of ice into the UNESCO Icefjord – a sheer unimaginable amount. If we are lucky we might even spot a whale or two.
Overnight in Ilulissat.

Day 4: Ilulissat

Day 1 Kulusuk – Tasiilaq (By Flight)
Shortly after arrival in Kulusuk you will either go by boat or by helicopter to Tasiilaq – the main town on the East coast of Greenland with about 2,000 inhabitants.

Either way, it will be a beautiful experience flying above or sailing in between spectacular icebergs to the neighboring island. You will be taken to your guesthouse where you will be staying the next 4 nights and later there in the day there will be an information meeting and dinner with the other participants. If the weather allows it, the chef will prepare a lovely barbeque on the terrace.

Day 2 – Tasiilaq- Knud Rasmussen Glacier- Tasiilaq (By Cruise Boat -7-8 hrs)
The excursion starts at the harbor of Tasiilaq, heading towards northwest into the broad Ammassalik Fjord. After about an hour sailing we will turn into narrow and steep fjords with breathtaking mountain peaks.

We will make a stop at Ikateq and look at some remnants of World War 2. It was here the Americans ran an airfield from 1942 – 47, in wartime code-names called “Bluie East Two”. It was built in order to facilitate transatlantic air traffic, navigation, search-and-rescue operations and weather forecast. You can still see the airfield, and rusted fuel drums, vehicles and ruins.

We will continue our journey and arrive in Sermiligaaq Fjord, which means “The Beautiful Glacier Fjord”. The name will not disappoint you. At some point you will be able to have the view of two calving glaciers simultaneously, Karale Glacier on your left side, and Knud Rasmussen Glacier right ahead of you. We will sail as close as the situation allows to Knud Rasmussen Glacier, go ashore and enjoy lunch here. After about 1-2 hours, we will head back to Tasiilaq.

Note: Bring some warm clothes with you, but in case you are freezing, we will have a down cover for you. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.

Day 3 Tasiilaq – Tiniteqilaaq – Sermilik Icefjord- Tasiilaq (By Cruise Boat)
We start in the harbor in Tasiilaq and sail toward north along the Ammassalik Island trough a breathtaking landscape, passing floating ice that looks like sculptures. After 1 – 2 hours, we will arrive in a small settlement called Tiniteqilaaq (which means in Greenlandic “the strait that runs dry at low tide”). The settlement has a spectacular view on the Sermilik Fjord (in Greenlandic “Icefjord”) with colossal icebergs and on the horizon the Greenland Ice Shield touches the sky. 113 people lived permanently in Tiniteqilaaq on January 2015.

You will have the possibility for a stroll around the settlement by your own. After that we will continue to Sermilik Fjord and enjoy our lunch with a view on the gigantic icebergs. Then we head southwards in the Sermilik Fjord and sail around the Ammassalik Island passing more icebergs and return to Tasiilaq.

Note: Bring some warm clothes with you, but in case you are freezing, we will have a down cover for you. Lunch, warm drinks and refreshments are included.

Day 4 – Tasiilaq
The city walk will take us to a workshop where local artists make beautiful and renowned handicraft. Then towards the harbor and visit the museum, which is the old church built in 1903. The museum has many historical treasures, and you can learn about the life and history of East Greenland.

The walk continues along the shore to the Hospital and up to the new church. Above the church, you will enjoy a beautiful view over the town. In this area, you will be able to see the oldest houses of the town where the first colony manager Johann Pedersen or the polar explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen lived.

Before heading to the Flower Valley, you can visit the tourist office Skæven where it is possible to buy handicraft of all kinds, maps, etc. As the name of the valley indicates, you will be able to see many different flowers, such as arctic thyme, arctic bluebell, arctic dandelion, the national flower broad-leafed willow herb, and many more.

We continue the small curved path along the river for a few kilometers, until we reach a small waterfall. Here we will spend some time to enjoy the beautiful landscape and peacefulness, before heading back to Tasiilaq.

Note: It is an easy walk through town, but we recommend sturdy shoes for the walk in the Flower Valley. We recommend you to bring some refreshments with you.

Day 5 Tasiilaq – Kulusuk (By Cruise Boat / Air) / Depart Kulusuk (By Flight)
Today is a traveling day. In the morning you will take the helicopter or the boat back to Kulusuk for onward journey
