Sail all day making headway against strong currents through the lush Assami countryside stopping for some exercise in a village of market gardens.

Day 03 Sailing – Tezpur B-L-D By Ship RV Kindat Pandaw
Exploring the town by trishaw we visit the De Parbatia temple with its richly carved portals and Cole Park with its collection of medieval carvings collected from across the region.

Day 04 Tezpur – Nameri NP B-L-D By Ship RV Kindat Pandaw
After an early breakfast, drive for some two hours to the Nameri National Park at the foot of the blue hills of Arunachal Pradesh, the old North East Frontier Agency. Here, we take a float trip of around two hours down the Jia-Bhoreli River through the park. There are excellent bird-watching opportunities here (look out for the great Hornbills) and, perhaps, the chance of sighting wild elephants. After lunch, take a village walk before returning to the ship. Continue upstream, passing below a seemingly endless new bridge across the vast width of the riverbed, to moor at Silghat.

Day 05 Nameri NP – Kaziranga NP B-L-D By Ship RV Kindat Pandaw
Jeep safari to Kaziranga an area of approximately 430 sq kms, this UNESCO World Heritage is home to the world’s largest population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros as well as the Indian Wild Water Buffalo. It has the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers withone every five sq. km. The park an incredibly rich biodiversity hotspot with its marshy swamps and thickets of elephant grass, this park supports large populations of Indian elephants, Indian bison, swamp deer, and capped langurs.
Besides wildlife, Kaziranga National Park is also a birding paradise. A few of the bird species found here are the oriental honey buzzard, black-shouldered kite, white-tailed eagle, himalayan griffon to mention a few.

Return downstream to visit a tea estate and historic plantation house on the way. Learn about the tea production process from start to finish in this idyllic setting.

Kolkata – Barrackpore By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
Transfer from the meeting point to embark and sail at noon. Sail past the old Danish colony of Serampore to Barrackpore to land and take a walk through the cantonment – past the Semaphore Tower, Government House, the Temple of Fame and Flagstaff House.

Day 02 Barrackpore – Kalna B-L-D By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
After breakfast sail upstream and land at the country town of Kalna and take rickshaws to see a group of some of Bengal’s most attractive terracotta temples, as well as the unique Shiva temple with concentric rings made up of 108 lesser shrines. Sail on through the night to a mooring near Matiari.

RV Kalaw Pandaw – Sister to the Kindat and identical in design the Kalaw was launched with her in 2014 Kalaw is named after the PS Kalaw launched in 1917 and sunk in 1942 in the War. Paul Strachan witnessed the salvaging of the Kalaw in 1998 and managed to acquire her name plate and bell, the former of which has been reused on her namesake. Again this ultra light ship combines one of the shallowest drafts on the river with one of the highest passenger space ratios afloat.

Day 03 Kalna – Matiari B-L-D By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
Visit the brass-working village of Matiari, a charming riverside village. Interact with the locals of Matiari and witness the whole primitive process of beating out brass water pots and other vessels. Continue cruising upstream and time permitting visit the battlefield of Plassey where, in 1757, Robert Clive, the Commander-in-Chief of British India, defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, to change the course of Indian history. Moor close to Murshidabad for the night.

Day 04 Matiari – Murshidabad B-L-D By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
This morning, walk to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Mughal-style garden that encloses the tombs of Siraj-ud-Daulah – the last independent Nawab of Bengal – and his family. Continue a little way upstream to where the great Hazarduari Palace dominates the waterfront. Built by an English architect in 1837, the palace hosts an extensive collection of pictures, china, weapons and other objects. Carry on to visit the great Katra Mosque and Nashipara Palace before driving out to see the Katgola Palace. Built in classical Georgian style by rich local merchants, Katgola Palace represents the other side of the coin of the ‘White Mughal’ period when English and Indian cultures came close to fusion. Moor overnight on the riverbank across from town.

Day 05 Murshidabad – Baranagar B-L-D By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
Continue up the Hoogly which transforms into a charming waterway twisting and turning between banks lined with mustard fields and mango orchards. Morning walk through the fields of the delightfully sleepy village of Baranagar to visit its three gorgeous miniature terracotta temples. This is rural India at its most idyllic. Visit the Jain temples at Azimganj and continue downstream.

Day 06 Baranagar – Mayapur B-L-D By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
Explore the village of Mayapur, the headquarters of the ISKCON movement with a new temple comparable in size to the Vatican and largely funded by Alfred B. Ford, the great grandson of car maker Henry Ford. Meet Krishna followers and walk through the pilgrims’ bazaar.

Day 07 Chandernagore – Hooghly B-L-D By Ship RV Kalaw Pandaw
Continue sailing downstream before landing to visit the imposing Imambara at Hooghly. With verses from the Koran written on its walls, the Imambara is an opportunity to step back in time and relive a slice of Islamic history in Bengal. Sail past the old Dutch settlement of Chinsura to Chandernagore, a French possession until 1950. Visit the 18th century church and Dupleix’s House, erstwhile Governor-General of French India. Sail into the night to a mooring near Kolkata.

Day 08 Kolkata – Guwahati B-L-D By Flight

RV Kindat Pandaw – The original Kindat was built in 1886 by Yarrows in London and sank in 1920. She was named after a small Upper Chindwin town. Following experiments with the Katha and Angkor Pandaws, in this build we perfected this concept of a two deck shallow draft vessel and repeated the formula again with her sister the Kalaw. What we managed to produce in 2014 was a very shallow draft vessel that could go just about anywhere anytime that was big enough to carry 30-40 passengers with lots of outdoor deck space. We did this by reducing weight and stripping both hull and superstructure down to the bare essentials.

Transfer from the meeting point in Kolkata to embark on your Pandaw ship. Set sail down the Hooghly River, an important distributory of the Ganga to Chandernagore, a French possession until 1950. Stroll along the riverside promenade, visit the 18th century church and Dupleix’s House, the erstwhile Governor-General of French India. Return to the ship and continue upstream past the old Dutch settlement of Chinsura and the Portuguese settlement of Bandel.

Day 02 Kolkata – Kalna (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Land at the country town of Kalna and take rickshaws to see a group of some of Bengal’s most attractive terracotta temples, as well as the unique Shiva temple with concentric rings made up of 108 lesser shrines. On the way back to the ship explore the colourful local market full of fruit sellers and fish mongers. Continue sailing towards Mayapur to explore the vast new ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temple which dominates the skyline. As the headquarters of ISKCON or the Hare Krishna movement, the temple receives over a million singing and dancing devotees a year from around the world.

RV Katha Pandaw – This was a radical new design, based on the old K class used in Burma from the 1880s on. This ship is the third Katha to run on the Irrawaddy. The first was built at Dalla in 1887 but lost on the Chindwin in 1889. The second was built by Denny of Dumbarton in 1904 and decommissioned in 1937 and the third was built by us in Vietnam in 2012.
The Katha general arrangement was radical in that we eliminated the formal indoor dining room. This led to great protests from regular passengers and indeed our staff. In the end all agree it is far more pleasant to eat outside than in a stuffy, noisy enclosed dining room and the bugs are really not that bad.

Day 03 Kalna – Matiari (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Set off to discover the brass-working village of Matiari. Interact with the local artisans learn how these skilled craftsmen all specialise in a different process – from beating the metal, to etching the designs. Witness the whole process involved to create brass water pots, trays and other vessels Later, cruise on past the battlefield of Plassey where, in 1757, Robert Clive, the Commander-in-Chief of British India, defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal.

Day 05 Murshidabad – Farakka (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Cross from the Lower Ganges or Hooghly River to the Ganges itself through the Farraka canal and lock, that was constructed 1963-75. Passing into the great river the great Farraka barrage will be visible just downstream. This effectively dams the Ganges and strategically controls the flow of water into neighbouring Bangaladesh. Enter a section of river rich in bird life, before stopping at Samtaghat, otherwise known as Raj Mahal.

Day 06 Farakka – Bateshwarsthan (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Passing the confluence of the Kosi river that flows down from Nepal, moor at the pretty town of Bateshwarsthan to uncover the 8th century Buddhist site of Vikramshila, one of the two most important centres of learning in India during the Pala Empire, along with Nalanda.

Day 07 Bateshwarsthan – Bhaglapur (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Sailing along this stretch of the river provides an opportunity to spot the rare Gangeatic dolphins. Land at Bhaglapur, a centre of silk production, and visit the 18th century mansion of the Collector, Augustus Cleveland.

Day 08 Bhaglapur – Sultanganj (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Contunue to Jahanigra Island, a place of pilgrimage with many rock carvings in high relief dating from the eighth century depicting aspects of Siva and Vishnu. In the evening moor off Sultanganj, with its pair of great granite rocks, one crowned with a mosque and the other a small temple dating from the 16th century.

Day 09 Sultanganj – Munger (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Munger is now a large and industrialised city but has an interesting history. In 1762, Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal, shifted his capital from Murshidabad to Munger, and established a firearms manufacturing centre here. Explore the Mughal fort, East India Company cemetery and step inside the Bihar School of Yoga founded in 1964 by Satyananda Saraswati. One of the leading yoga schools in the country. The institution has developed yogic techniques through a synthesis of traditional yogic, vedantic and tantric practices and contemporary health science.

Day 10 Munger – Mokama (B-L-D) (By Ship RV Katha Pandaw)
Stop at Mokama, once home to Jim Corbett the naturalist and protector of the Indian tigers. Surrounded by farmlands, Mokama has the second hightest production of lentils in the country. Learn about the freedom fighters from Mokama such as Lalldin Saheb, whose during the freedom struggle was sentenced to jail during the British rule.

Explore Barh, a town famous for Hindu ritual cremation at Urmanath and the Alakhnath Temple.

Disembark your Pandaw ship early and drive to the archaeological site of Nalanda, the great 5th century Buddhist university. Discover the monumental red brick walls and stupas standing on the site of what was the longest running university in Indian history. Immerse yourself in the tranquil surrounds of this UNESCO World Heritage Site which is thought to have accommodated over 10,000 students and hosted Buddha Siddhartha himself. Continue to Bodh Gaya, another UNESCO World Heritage Site arranged around the Maha Bodhi temple where the Lord Buddha attained enlightenment in the 5th century BC. Spend time exploring this global centre of pilgrimage for Buddhists of all denominations and admire the many monasteries built in various national styles – Tibetan, Burmese, Thai, Japanese, etc.Overnight in Oaks Bodh Gaya or similar

Day 13 Varanasi (B-L-D)
Board a flight to Varanasi, the oldest and holiest city of India established in the 11th century BC and today with over 2,000 living temples. Check-in to your hotel with time to freshen up before and evening cruise along the sacred river to witness the Aarti ritual. Enjoy a dinner at The Great Kebab Factory, a contemporary and stylish Indian restaurant specialising in delectable kebabs.Overnight in Tree of Life Varanasi or similar

Take a sunrise boat cruise past the bathing ghats and observe the people as they come to the river to perform their morning prayers and rituals. Following breakfast explore the Old City on a walking tour through the ancient by-lanes and discover the colourful and chaotic life that exists. Later visit Sarnath and the Deer Park where the Lord Buddha gave his first sermon with its archaeological museum. Return to the hotel and enjoy a musical performance comprising a sitar and tabla before your farewell dinner

Arrive in late. Morning at the Kolkata Jetty for embarkation, welcome and safety briefing. Post the onboard lunch, set sail along the Hooghly River to reach the fishing port of Namkhana, the gateway of the Sundarbans. We cruise past the Diamond Harbour & Kedgeree towards the Bay of Bengal. Sunderbans are the world’s largest delta mangrove forest and habitat of the famous Royal Bengal Tiger.

Day 02 Namkhana – Bony Camp (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Morning arrive at Boney camp Watch tower and to have first introductions to the mangrove forests . Later we sail in the Matla river to Hero Bhangra islands and disembark in country boat after lunch to visit Netidho pani area and then proceed to Bali island for overnight stay.

Day 03 Sudhanyakhali – Do Banki (B-L-D) (By Ship)
After an early start we ride on the country boat through mangrove creeks to the Dobanki Watchtower after visiting Sudhanyakhali and enjoy a canopy walk to view the riveting flora and fauna. This canopy walk is at an elevation of 20 feet from the ground and is about half a kilometer in length. Dobanki also has a Deer Rehabilitation Center.We transfer to the ship for late lunch and sail to Namkhana

Disembark in the Evening.Early this morning we sail back to Kolkata enjoying breakfast and lunch on board. Disembark in the evening .

On the first day we arrive on-board. In the afternoon we visit Mother Teresa’s home, memorial and the Missionaries of Charity orphanage that she founded. This is followed by a cultural performance in the evening.

Day 02 Kolkata – Bandel – Kalna (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The second day starts with an early morning city-tour of the well-preserved British colonial buildings in Kolkata, including Victoria Memorial Museum. Then, we sail upstream through the European East India Company’s route of the 17th & 19th centuries accompanied by a visit to the Bandel’s Imambara, a colonial-era Islamic school and pilgrim rest house on the riverbank.

Day 03 Kalna – Matiari (B-L-D) (By Ship)
On the third day, enjoy a cycle rickshaw ride to the Rajbari temples in Kalna, built in the 19th century that are adorned with intricate terracotta reliefs of the gods and humans.

Day 04 Matiari – Khushbagh (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The fourth day starts with an early morning walk on the shore side village of Matiari, which is famous for its handcrafted brass and copperware.

Day 05 Khushbagh – Baranagar -Murshidabad (B-L-D) (By Ship)
On the fifth day, we visit Khushbagh, a tomb complex set in scenic fields, built by a local ruler; and the village of Baranagar with its beautiful terracotta temples, built by a rich woman who made her wealth in the colonial trade. Take a walk through local villages and sail to Murshidabad. We walk to the vast Neo-Classical Hazarduari Palace built in the 19th century by a British architect.

The next morning starts with a cycle rickshaw ride to the enchanting Rajbari Temple Complex in Kalna. Here we observe Bengal’s temple architecture and themes of Hindu epics and mythical lives of saints, gods & goddesses. Sail to Matiari.

Day 03 Matiari – Murshidabad (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The third day starts with an early morning visit to the village of Matiari to observe the process of brass making. After that, we return to the ship, cast off and cruise towards Murshidabad, sailing past Plassey.

Day 04 Murshidabad – Jangipur (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The morning starts with a visit to the historic town of Murshidabad and a tonga ride to witness the oldest mosque in town, Katra Mosque. It is then followed by a visit to the Hazarduari Palace Museum, built during the reign of Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah (1824-1838 AD).

On the fifth day we explore the historic Farakka Lock Gate. After exploring the Feeder Canal, we sail through the Farakka barrage at a distance, which regulates the water of the Ganges in Bangladesh and India. Reach Samtaghat.

Day 06 Samtaghat -Bateshwarsthan (B-L-D) (By Ship)
We set sail to Bateshwarsthan in the morning. After arrival, we ride in jeeps/cars (about 15 minutes) to the excavation site of the Vikramshila University, one of the largest Buddhist universities in the past, with more than one hundred teachers and about one thousand students.

Day 07 Bateshwarsthan – Sultanganj (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The morning starts by sailing towards the rocky island Sultanganj, which is known for two great rocks of granite and an important pilgrim centre. It is known as Jahngira, which means ‘the hill of Jahnu’.

Day 08 Sultanganj – Munger (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The eighth day starts with a sail towards Munger, one of the largest cities and most industrialized in the state of Bihar. Its history can be traced back to the mythological era of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Post lunch, we visit the Bihar School of Yoga, founded in 1964 by Satyananda Saraswati and his spiritual successor Niranjanananda Saraswati.

Day 09 Disembark at Munger (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Drive to Nalanda & Bodhgaya By Road
DISEMBARK AT MUNGER & DRIVE TO NALANDA AND BODHGAYA
This day starts with the ship disembarking at 0700 hrs to visit Nalanda. It treasures a glorious past of academia in India and extraordinary architectural ruins. During late afternoon, we visit the Mahabodhi temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 10 Bodhgaya – Varanasi (B-L-D) (By Road)
After early breakfast, we drive to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities for Hindus in India. During late afternoon, we ride on a cycle rickshaw and experience the enchanting and incredible life on the streets of Varanasi, followed by a visit to the ghats.

Day 11 Varanasi (B-L-D)
Start the day with a sunrise Boat Tour to witness the incredible scenes along the Holy River. Post lunch, we visit Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The Archeological Museum at Sarnath houses a large collection of sculptures from the glorious Indian past.

Day 12 Varanasi – Depart (By Flight)
On the last day, bid farewell to the beautiful Ganges by departing for the airport or to your desired destination.

Day 01 Arrive Kolkata (By Flight)
Morning the ship embarks at the Botanical Garden Jetty in Kolkata. Enjoy lunch on board. In the afternoon set off on a panoramic tour of the heritage buildings in Kolkata, St. John’s Church and, the Victoria Memorial Museum.

Day 02 Kolkata – Namkhana (Sundarvans) (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Early morning visit the Marine House to complete immigration formalities. We then sail along the Hooghly river, cruising past Diamond Harbour & Kedgeree, towards the Bay of Bengal to reach the fishing port of Namkhana. Sunderbans are, the world’s largest delta mangrove forests and habitat of the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Based on the tide situation we cross Hatania Doaniya Creek and moor, near Bhagabatpur.

Day 03 Bhagabatpur – Sajnakhali (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Early this morning we visit the crocodile project at Bhagabatpur island, a hatchery and sanctuary of the estuarine crocodiles. Continue sailing to Jharkali where we will visit the Tiger Rescue Centre (time permitting) before anchoring at Sajnakahli, near the core wildlife zone.

Day 04 Sajnakhali – Hemnagar (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Today we sail through the wildlife area of Sundabarbans to Bangladesh. After completing customs formalities at Hemnagar, we cruise down to the Bangladeshi side of the Sunderbans to Antihara and anchor overnight.

Day 05 Hemnagar – Antihara – Mongla (B-L-D) (By Ship)
This morning we sail to Mongla and later in the day visit the Sixty Domed Mosque and Museum at Bagerhat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 06 Mongla – Kotka (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Sail to the forest station and complete the Forest Department formalities, accompanied by a forest guard. We will cruise down towards Kotka forest station and anchor for the night.

Day 07 Kotka – Harbaria (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Disembark to view the mangrove’s fauna and flora and enjoy a short silent boat trip inside the forest. Visit the Kotka Jamtola sea beach and enjoy its scenic beauty. Return to the ship for Lunch. Thereafter visit Kotka forest area to find deer and other animals. Return to ship and sail onward to Harbaria.

Day 08 Harbaria – Morleganj (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Today at dawn, explore the narrow creeks and canals of Harbaria on rowing boats. Return to the ship for breakfast, sailing back towards Barisal mooring at Morlegonj.

Day 09 Moleganj – Barisal (B-L-D) (By Ship)
This morning we sail to Barisal. Post lunch we visit the Oxford Epiphany Church.

Day 10 Barisal – Dhaka (B-L-D) (By Ship)
In the morning we visit the Floating Market and continue cruising to Meghna Ghat in Dhaka.

Day 11 Dhaka – Sonargaon (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Today after breakfast, we explore Sonargaon with an excursion to the medieval capital of Bengal. Here we explore Panam City, Sadarbari, Goaldi Mosque and an art and craft museum.

Day 12 Depart Dhaka
This morning we disembark and proceed to visit the Dhakeswari Temple. During the tour, enjoy the picturesque drive to Dhaka’s heritage buildings like Dhaka University, Curzon Hall, National Assembly and the Old High Court.

Late morning embark on the ship . Welcome and safety briefing. Lunch and then Depending on tide timings we will depart for Mangaldweep . Stop by Chandernagore for a walk to see the French building and enjoy the local ambience. Day 03 Mangaldweep – Shantipur – Kolkata (B-L) (By Ship)
Morning we sail back to Kolkata enjoying breakfast on board. we may stop at an interesting site to walk and explore followed by lunch . Late afternoon we will reach Kolkatta and disembark.

Day 01 Arrive Kolkata (By Flight)
Morning arrival in Kolkata, transfer to the ship and enjoy lunch on board. Post lunch we visit the Weaver’s Studio, a Textile Study and Resource Centre dedicated to the study of the rich textile traditions of Bengal. Their creations are inspired by historical textiles, ethnic tribes, and contemporary techniques.

Day 02 Kolkata – Bally Bridge (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Return to the ship for lunch and set sail upstream, passing underneath the cantilevered Howrah Bridge, viewing various colonial buildings along the Ganges River.

Day 03 Bally Bridge – Bandel (B-L-D) (By Ship)
The two-story building provides accommodation to pilgrims with classrooms that impart teachings from the holy Koran.

Day 04 Bandel – Kalna (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Today we sail to the temple town of Kalna. In the afternoon, we take a cycle rickshaw ride through the bustling town to visit the Rajbari temple complex, which encloses several temples dating back 1800 years. The most notable being the Nabakailas temple that has 108 Shiva shrines in two concentric circles. We also visit a local weaver’s home to view the traditional weaving of muslin

Day 05 Kalna – Nabadwip – Mayapur (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Early morning we set sail to Nabadwip. Post lunch we explore the riverbank village walking, witnessing the locals engaged in handloom weaving of cotton fabrics like saris, stoles and scarves. We then take a country boat across the river to visit Mayapur, the headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

Day 06 Mayapur – Guptipara – Fulia (B-L-D) (By Ship)
Today we sail to Guptipara, a rural town renowned for its paddy fields and exotic Himsagar mangoes. Explore the architectural opulence of the Vaishnav temples that exhibit intricate terracotta works of art. Visit a potter’s home to witness clay pottery-making and interact with the artisans. In the afternoon, we sail across to visit the weaving village of Fulia. After the partition of India in 1947, many skilled weavers from Bangladesh settled here making the region a renowned centre for hand-woven fabrics.

Day 07 Fulia – Chandernagore – Kolkata (B-L-D) (By Ship)
This morning we sail to Chandernagore, established as a French colony in 1673. Explore the French colonial buildings walking along the promenade, paying a visit to the former French governor’s residence, now converted into a museum. Also, visit the Sacred Heart Church that stands for over two centuries. Continue the journey back to Kolkata.

Day 08 Depart Kolkata
Disembark after breakfast and proceed to the airport for onward travel.
