Day 02 Kolkata
After Breakfast Proceed for a full day city tour visiting Dalhousie Square Covering Raj Bhavan, St. John’s Church, High Court, GPO, Town Hall, Writer’s Building and other important colonial buildings, Flower Market, Howrah Bridge, Kumhartoli The Potter’s Village, Marble Palace, Indian Museum, St. Paul’s Cathedral Church & Victoria Memorial. The Heritage tour will give insight in to the historical aspect of old Calcutta. This square has many old historic buildings, to name a few – Silver Mint 1824-31 built in Greek style is presently in a dilapidated condition, The Writers Building – designed by Thomas Lyon as a trading house for East India Company in 1780 has 57 sets of identical windows on 3 storeys built like a barrack inside. The Old Mission Church, built by Swedish missionary Johann Kiernander was consecrated in 1770, General Post Office designed by Walter Granville in 1868 has a white dome and Corinthian pillars, The Raj Bhawan, once a residence of British Governors-General and Viceroys, it is now the home of Governor of West Bengal, next to it is the most important Gothic building of Kolkata – the Calcutta High Court, built in 1872.

The Pareshnath Jain Temple is an ornate Digambar Jain temple built in central Indian Style in 1867 by a jeweller. The interior is richly decorated in European baroque and Italianate styles with mirrors and Venetian glass mosaics. The gardens have formal geometric flower beds.

Belur Math was founded in 1899 by Swami Vivekanand, a disciple of Saint Ramakrishna. It is presently the international headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission and preaches the unity of all religions. Symbolizing the belief of “Math” monastery it has Hindu, Christian and Islamic style of architecture.

Visit to the Ninth oldest regular Museum of the world, Indian Museum, Kolkata. It was established in the year 1814 at the Asiatic Society and was transferred to the present site in 1878. It has over sixty galleries of Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Botany sections, spreading over 10000 sq. feet area. Many rare specimens both Indian and Trans – Indian origin relating to Humanities and Natural Science are preserved and displayed in the galleries of these sections. It has a collection of more than 50,000 coins of Gold, Silver and other metals. It also has a mummy in its Egyptian section.

In the afternoon visit the Victoria Memorial – a gift by Lord Curzon to Queen Victoria in honor of her commemoration and as a symbol of her Indian Empire. It has been designed in Italian Renaissance-Mughal style and built in White Marble in 1921 and has many galleries with over 3000 exhibits. At the entrance it has an impressive ‘weather vane’ in form of a 5mt tall bronze figure of Victory, weighing over 3 tons.Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 03 Kolkata–Bagdogra (By Flight) / Bagdogra–Darjelling (66 Km/ 03 hrs)
After Breakfast Proceed to airport to board flight to Bagdogra. Arrive Bagdogra and drive to Darjeeling. Darjeeling is one of the most magnificent hill resorts in the world. This heavenly retreat is bathed in hues of every shade. Day 04 Darjeeling
After Breakfast Proceed to Tiger Hill. Situated at an altitude of 2590 metres 8482 ft. and 13 kms from the town, this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the Sunrise over “Kanchenjunga” and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains. On your way back visit Ghoom Monastry More correctly known as Yogachoeling Gompa, this is probably the most famous monastery in Darjeeling, just below Hill Cart road and the train station near Ghoom. It enshrines an image of the Maitreya Buddha. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at hotel.

Day 08 Pemyangtse – Gangtok (By Road) (107 Kms / 04 hrs 20 min appx)
After Breakfast Proceed to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim is situated at a height of 5,500ft. The present capital was shifted from Tumlong in 1894 by Chogyal Thutob Namgyal and is today the centre for political, commercial, religious and cultural activities of the Sikkimese people. Gangtok offers the tourists all modern amenities for pleasure and comfort. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 09 Gangtok
After Breakfast Proceed visit some of the fascinating sights in Gangtok. Visit Phodong Monastery, it was built in the early 18th century but an older monastery had pre-existed the current one. The 9th Karmapa was invited by the king of Sikkim, where he founded three monasteries Rumtek, the most important monastery of the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, Phodong and Ralang Monastery.

This beautiful monastery makes the abode of not less than 250 monks and it is adorned by the old mural paintings. Phodong Monastery is the major monastery of Karmapa sub-sect of Kagyupa sect. Afternoon visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology – It is a premiere institute and research center located atop a small hill. The main attraction here is the museum which houses around 200 Buddhist icons, antique Paintings, Thangkas, Statues, Shrines, Tapestries, Masks and other religious works of Tibetan Art.

Establishment in 1958, it has sponsored and promoted research on the religion, history, language, art and culture of the people of the Tibetan cultural area which includes Sikkim. Its library holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan works in the world outside Tibet. Later visit Do Drul Chorten – an imposing white stupa. This holy stupa was built under the direction of Late Truslshi Rimpoche in 1945. It is part of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. There are 108 prayer wheels and the wheels have a special meaning.

Turning of these wheels goes along with the chanting of the mantras engraved on them. The sound of a collective chant emanates from the prayer and meditation rooms in the monastery can also be heard in the background. The famous Do Drul Chorten has a gold plated spire. The Chorten is encircled by Chorten Lhakhang and Guru Lhakhang that boast of the two colossal statues of Guru Rimpoche as Guru Padmasambhava is popularly referred as in these parts. Day 10 Gangtok – Kalimpong (By Road) (75 Kms / 02 hrs 36 min appx)
After Breakfast Proceed to Kalimpong. Situated at an altitude of 1250 metres, it enjoys temperate climate throughout the year. After Breakfast Proceed for the sightseeing, visit following places of interest:-The Rajarani Temple AD 1100, set amongst picturesque paddy fields, derives its name from the stone known as the Rajarani. It was built earlier in comparison to the impressive Lingaraja, but what sets apart this relatively small temple is its celebration of the feminine form. Here women are portrayed in a stunning variety of amorous poses and moods reminding one of the temples of Khajuraho.The 55-mt-high Lingaraja Temple is a rare masterpiece depicting the high point of Orissan architecture of the 10th-11th century. Described as ‘the truest fusion of dream and reality’ every inch of its surface is covered with elaborate carvings of Gods, Goddesses, Dryads, Nymphs and Fairies.

The temple can be seen from miles away and the sculpture and architecture here fuse elegantly to create a perfect harmony. It is believed that all pilgrims, who wish to go to the Jagannath temple at Puri, must first offer worship at the Lingaraja temple. The temple has two added structures—the Natya Mandir dance hall and the Bhoga Mandap offering platform. Note – Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the Lingaraja Temple.Most ornate Temple in Bhubaneswar, the Mukteshwar Temple 7th-8th century has intricate carvings of deities that show the amalgamation of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain styles of architecture. The carvings on the roof, especially the Bho motifs of the grinning Lion and Monkey, are quite striking.

There is a well to the south of the temple in which childless women toss a coin to wish for a child. The Brahmeshwara Temple, stands in a courtyard flanked by four smaller temples and a Shivling. Besides, there are other minor shrines in every corner of the courtyard. Two interesting images are found inside this temple: a well-oiled image of Lakshmi, covered in cloth, and a miniature image of Nataraja sitting on a bull and playing a Veena.

Outside the city limits are the Udayagiri and Khandgiri caves, harking back to the time of Jain and Buddhist occupation of this region in the 2nd century BC. The Jain caves are among the earliest in India and all the caves were built or excavated during the 150 years before Christ. In contrast to the stark decor of the Jain caves, the Buddhist caves are decorated with excellent friezes and sculptures. Overnight stay at hotel.

Jama Masjid – One of the Architectural gift given by Shah Jahan, Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques not only in Delhi but in India.

Raj Ghats – Along the banks of Jamuna are located the places were the leaders and freedom fighters of India were cremated.

Laxmi Narayan Temple, also known as Birla Mandir, is one of Delhi’s major temples and a major tourist attraction. Built by the industrialst Sh. J.K. Birla in 1939, this beautiful temple is located in the west of Connaught Place.

The Parliament house is a cirular colonnaded building . It also houses ministerial offices, numerous committee rooms and an excellent library as well. Conceived in the Imperial Style, the Parliament House consists of an open verandah with 144 columns.

The Presidential Palace -This impressive building was once the palace of the british vice king and is now the seat of the Indian President. The building is located in a huge garden. It can’t be visited because it’s not open to the public.

Next to the gate are several government buildings such as the ministry of foreign affairs and the ministry of finance.

Day 02 Delhi – Jaipur (By Road) (250 kms. / 4.5 hrs.appx.)
After breakfast, visit of Delhi.
Visit: Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Lotus temple and Qutub Minar.

Qutab Minar – In 1199, Qutbuddin raised the Qutab Minar either as a victory tower or as a minaret to the adjacent mosque. From a base of 14.32 mtrs. It tapers to 2.75 mtrs. At a height of 72.5 mtrs.

Later, drive to Jaipur.
On arrival, visit Laxmi Narayan Temple.

Day 03 Jaipur
Morning visit to Amber Fort enjoy Joy Elephant ride upto the hills and back by jeep ride.
Jaipur the vibrant capital of Rajasthan is popularly known as the ‘ Pink City ‘ because of the pink-coloured buildings in its old city. It sits on a dry lake bed in a somewhat arid landscape, surrounded by barren hills surmounted by forts and crenellated walls.

Amber Fort – Amber is located at a distance of 11 kilometers from Jaipur and was the old fort of the Kachhwaha clan of Amber, which used to be the capital, till it was moved to Jaipur. The construction of the Amber Fort began in the year 1592 and was started by Man Singh I, but it was finished by his descendant Jai Singh.

City Palace & Observatory. The City Palace in the heart of the old city is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. The fortified wall has seven gates and was built for protection from invading armies and animals that lived in jungles, which surrounded the wall that time.

Visit to Jantar Mantar – the observatory built my Maharaja Jai Singh in 1728 and the façade of Hawa Mahal. Jalmahal – (6 kms) on the way to Amer, this small palace is set in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. Renovation around the lake is in progress. Hawa Mahal – The palace is shaped like a pyramid and is a five-storied building, with number of small windows and screens, with arched roofs. As one looks at this building, one realizes that the rear side of the building is comparatively very plain and lacks much of ornamentation.

Day 04 Jaipur – Abhaneri – Fatehpur Sikri – Agra (By Road) (264 kms. / 6 hrs)
After breakfast, drive to Agra , enroute Abhaneri Village, Step Well” and Fatehpur Sikri

Abhaneri; one of the places near Jaipur, is a small village in the Dausa district in North Rajasthan. Abhaneri village is located at a short distance of 95 Kms. from Jaipur on Jaipur-Agra highway.

The village is famous for its ancient Step well called ‘Chand Baori. Step wells are a unique concept of India and were used extensively around Rajasthan by erstwhile kings and rulers of different regions of Rajasthan.

These step wells were used as reservoir during monsoon to store water for harsh summer. Within these step wells, they used to build few palatial rooms that can be used once the water level drops. Very intelligently designed, the architecture of these step wells was very useful for storing water as well as making it a temporary residence to avoid summer heat.

Then continue drive to Fatehpur SIkri.

Fathepur Sikri – This magnificent fortifield ghost city was the capital of the Mughal emperor Akbar between 1571 and 1585. The downfall of this once magnificent capital of the Mughals started with the rise of the Jats when Emperor Aurangazeb left this place never to return again. The credit for preserving the ancient monuments situated here goes to Lord Curzon. Since then , these protected monuments and the environs of the city have been well maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The city is rectangular in shape with nine huge gates – Delhi Darwaza, Lal Darwaza, Agra Gate, Suraj and Chandra Darwaza, Tehra Gate and Ajmeri Darwaza.

Day 05 Agra – Gwalior (By Road) (120 Kms. / 2.5 hrs. appx.)
After breakfast, Tajmahal or can go early morning to view sunrise.

Sunrise is by far the best time to visit the Taj Mahal. Not just because the early morning light turns the dome of the temple a soft, golden colour, but because this is the time when there are the least amount of tourists and if you get in early enough, you might even get some perfect portraits with no people in them. There’s also something magical about watching the sun rise behind the Taj Mahal, a building that symbolises one of the greatest true love stories ever told.

Taj Mahal – Described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love, it was constructed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his queen Mumtaz Mahal, made out of white marble took 22 years to complete (1630-1652 AD). Ustad Ahamad Lahori, a Persian Architect, is said to be the main designer and planner for this magnificent memorial.

Agra, a romantic city in India, is known for the marble edifice ‘Taj Mahal’ Besides Taj Mahal, Agra is also known for the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, the red sandstone city made by Emperor Akbar.

Agra is a medieval city situated on the banks of the river Yamuna. Sultan Sikandar Lodi, the Ruler of Delhi Sultanate founded it in the year 1504. After the sultan’s death the city passed on to his son Sultan Ibrahim Lodi who ruled his Sultanate from Agra until he fell fighting to Babur in the First battle of Panipat fought in 1526.

Agra fort – Construction of the massive red sandstone Agra Fort on the bank of the Yamuna River was begun by Emperor Akbar in 1565, though additions were made up until the rule of his grandson, Shah Jahan.

Itmad-Ud- Daulah’s Tomb – This tomb belongs to the father of Nur Jahan, Ghias-ud-Din Beg. He was the Wajir or the Chief Minister of Emperor Jehangir. This white marble tomb was built by Nur Jahan between 1622 and 1628. The tomb may not be as mammoth as the Taj but the inlay designs and carvings are no less than Taj if not more. The delicate marble latticework in the passages allows the light to enter the interiors. A similar tomb was built by Nur Jahan for Jehangir in Lahore. This tomb was the first complete marble Moghul structure.

Day 07 Orchha – Khajuraho (By Road) (173 kms. / 4hrs appx.)
After breakfast, Temples tour of Khajuraho.

Visit Western Group of Temples – Khajuraho- The architectural style of the Khajuraho temples is very different from the temple prototype of that period. Each stands, instead of within the customary enclosure, on a high masonry platform.

Devi Mandap : Opposite the large Lakshman Temple are two small shrines. The one directly opposite is called Devi Mandap, its cemented peaked roof an indication that it has been renovated during the last century. Varaha Mandap This open pavilion stands to the south of the Devi shrine on a high platform. The mandap stands elevated above the ground with 14 short pillars that support the high pyramidal roof capped with an amalaka and kalash.

Lakshman Temple: This striking temple stands facing the varaha and Devi mandaps. It is one of the three largest temples of khajuraho and the western group of temples and is considered to be the earliest ( c.AD 954 ) to have been built by the chandella rulers.
Kandariya Mahadev Temple – : This is without any doubt the largest and most magnificent temple in Khajuraho. The elegant proportions of this building and its sculptural detailing are the most refined examples of this artistice heritage of central India.

Mahadev Shrine: Between the Kandariya and the devi jagdambi Temples is a small shrine whose purpose is difficult to ascertain. It is called the Mahadev Shrine and consists of a small open – pillared porch and sanctum, the structure has suffered further through renovations during the last century.
Visit to Eastern Group of Temples.

Chaunsath Yogini Temple -Also featuring a fairly extensive collection of erotic stone carvings is the Chaunsath Yogini Temple, a structure dedicated to the goddess Kali and notable for being the only temple in the entire range to have been made from granite.

Hindu Temples Brahman, Vamana and Javari comprise the three Hindu temples within the eastern group. All three temples feature the same style of erotic carvings as the others; while Braham is known for its four-faced lingam statue, Vamana for its sculptures of nymphs, and Javari for its magnificent gateway. Jain Temples Parsvanath which is dedicated to Jain Tirthankara Parshvanatha, is the largest of the Jain Temples and, like the somewhat smaller Adinath (dedicated to the Jain Tirthankara Adinath), features a selection of erotic carvings as well as other stone works telling less sexually explicit stories. Kandariya Mahadev Temple This is the tallest of the temples, not only in the western group but in the entire collection, and is believed to have been built around 1025 in honour of Lord Shiva. This 30-metre-high structure features erotic carvings along its northern and southern faces but also a variety of others depicting women engaged in non-sexual activity.

Archaeological Museum -Situated in a building adjacent to the Matangeshwar Temple, the Archaeological Museum was established by government officer WA Jardine in 1910 as a place to house the loose statues and sculptures found lying on the grounds of the ruined ancient temples.

Day 08 Khajurhao – Allahabad (By Road) (280 Kms. / 6 hrs. appx.)

Ganges: Ghats are the steps on the bank of Ganges that lead down to the river, from where the pilgrims make their sin- cleaning dip in the holy water of the river.

Evening watch Ganga Aarti ceremony at Ghats.
The aarti is performed on a stage by a group of young pandits, all draped in saffron colored robes with their puja plates spread out before them. It commences with the blowing of a conch shell, and continues with the waving of incense sticks in elaborate patterns and circling of large flaming lamps that create a bright hue against the darkened sky.

Day 10 Varanasi – Chennai (By Flight)

Varanasi –The eternal city, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India. Situated on the banks of the sacred river Ganges. Ghats are the steps on the bank of Ganges which lead down to the river.

Varanasi: It has been known as Kashi and Banaras, its present name is a restoration of the ancient name meaning the city between the two rivers Varun and Asi. The internal city id one of the most important pilgrimages sites in India. Situated on the bank of the sacred river Ganges, Kashi , Vishwanath temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

It is popularly known as the Golden Temple due to the Golden Plating done on its 15.5 meter high spire.Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Bharat Mata Temple -This Temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936 and houses one perfect relief maps of India carved out of marble. The Temple was gifted by the nationalists Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta (Barat Ratana ) and shri Durga Prasad Khatri, leading numismatists and antiquarians. Durga Temple – commonly called the ‘Monkey temple’, it was built in the 18th century. Although it is one of the best-known temple. Beware of the monkeys here who are daring and menacing. Tulsi Manas Temple – Constructed by family of Varanasi, this modern temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. It is situated at the place Where Tulisdas, the great medieval seer, lived and wrote the epic “Shri Ramcharitmanas”, which narrates the life of Lord Rama, the hero of the Ramayana.

Sarnath: One of the Major Buddhist centers in India. Having achieved enlightenment in Bdhgaya. It was at Sarnath where Buddha came to peach his massage of the middle way to final nirvana. Later Emperor Ashoka erected many magnificent stupas and other buildings here. Sarnath was at its peak when Chinese Traveller Fa hian and Hiuen Tsang visited the site.

Day 11 Chennai – Mahabalipuram (By Road) (55 kms. / 1h,30m. appx.)
After breakfast, sightseeing of Chennai: formerly called Madras, Originally Chennai was a cluster of villages, perched amidst paddy fields, bordered by palm trees. Fort ST. George: was built in 1640 AD, by the British East India Company under the direct supervision of Francis Day and Andrew Cogon. Marina Beach:

ANNA Memorial: the memorial for ARINZAR ANNADURAI.

St. Thomas Basilica: is built over the tomb of Apostle St.Thomas. St.Thomas one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ came to India in A.D.52, martyred in A.D.72 and was buried here in Mylapore.

Later in the afternoon continue drive towards to Mahabalipuram, on arrival transfer to hotel.

Trekk to most primitive Dongria Kondh villages in the Niyamgiri hills.You can also see and enjoy the Dongria Kondhs men and women coming down from their mountains with different kinds of fruits and animals etc. to the weekly market. After visiting their villages , you can come down to see their interesting weekly tribal market where they mix with other community.The weekly market at Chatikona where Doms, Desias and Dongoriya Kondhas barter is an interesting event to watch. Day 07 Jeypore – Anadeli – Lamptaput – Jeypore (160 km/ 4 hr approx)
Morning after breakfast, commence drive to visit is the home of the approximately 6000 members of the fierce Bondas (naked people). They live in the remote hills and keep themselves isolated. They grow rice by shifting cultivation and keep domesticated cows and goats. They can only be seen when they come to trade at the local market, and we must time our visit to coincide with the weekly market day on Thursday. The Bonda women are noticeable by their bead necklaces, striking brass and silver necklets and their shaved heads decorated with plaits of Palmyra leaves. You will also see the colourful Godabas, Parajas and Mali tribes.

Afternoon drive back to Jeypore en-route visiting the pottery village Bapaniguda, Siriguda and Paraja tribal village at Litiput.

After an early breakfast proceed to Gupteswar 75 km to visit the villages of very interesting Dhuruba tribe. Visit and walk through villages of Ramanguda, Dogariguda, Silpader, Talur etc. The Dhruba tribal males like to put ornaments living in the border of Madhya Pradesh. The Heritage tour will give insight in to the historical aspect of old Calcutta. This square has many old historic buildings, to name a few – Silver Mint 1824-31 built in Greek style is presently in a dilapidated condition, The Writers Building – designed by Thomas Lyon as a trading house for East India Company in 1780 has 57 sets of identical windows on 3 storeys built like a barrack inside.

The Old Mission Church, built by Swedish missionary Johann Kiernander was consecrated in 1770, General Post Office designed by Walter Granville in 1868 has a white dome and Corinthian pillars, The Raj Bhawan, once a residence of British Governors-General and Viceroys, it is now the home of Governor of West Bengal, next to it is the most important Gothic building of Kolkata – the Calcutta High Court, built in 1872. The Pareshnath Jain Temple is an ornate Digambar Jain temple built in central Indian Style in 1867 by a jeweller. The interior is richly decorated in European baroque and Italianate styles with mirrors and Venetian glass mosaics. The gardens have formal geometric flower beds.

Belur Math was founded in 1899 by Swami Vivekanand, a disciple of Saint Ramakrishna. It is presently the international headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission and preaches the unity of all religions. Symbolizing the belief of “Math” monastery it has Hindu, Christian and Islamic style of architecture.

Visit to the Ninth oldest regular Museum of the world, Indian Museum, Kolkata. It was established in the year 1814 at the Asiatic Society and was transferred to the present site in 1878. It has over sixty galleries of Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Botany sections, spreading over 10000 sq. feet area.

Many rare specimens both Indian and Trans – Indian origin relating to Humanities and Natural Science are preserved and displayed in the galleries of these sections. It has a collection of more than 50,000 coins of Gold, Silver and other metals. It also has a mummy in its Egyptian section.

In the afternoon visit the Victoria Memorial – a gift by Lord Curzon to Queen Victoria in honor of her commemoration and as a symbol of her Indian Empire. It has been designed in Italian Renaissance-Mughal style and built in White Marble in 1921 and has many galleries with over 3000 exhibits. At the entrance it has an impressive ‘weather vane’ in form of a 5mt tall bronze figure of Victory, weighing over 3 tons.
