Those forests which are rich in wild life and are a veritable paradise for bird-watchers and nature lovers bring a perfect environ to enjoy camping in Har ki Dun valley.

While camping, one can enjoy the trekking bliss at Garhwals most charmed valley- the Har ki Dun. This trek supports enjoyment for all age groups as the trek is not too tough, and valley is full of flora and fauna. A leisure trekker or camper can spend lucrative time identifying herbs & shrubs used for Ayurveda.
Subsequently, this is a holy place (as the name suggests) Hari – meaning God and Dun meaning Valley and according to the local folklore, where fairies congregate. The religious and legendary tales describe that Pandavs choose this mountain as a way towards heaven after winning over the Kauravas. Interestingly, Duryodhan is worshipped in some of its areas as God by few communities and one can also get to see a Duryodhan Temple.

Within the valley one can find Trees of Bhojpatra, the rare Bramhakamal, and many varieties of fauna. The area also acts as a base for approaching Swargarohini at the altitude of 6400.8 metrs. Swargarohini and Jaundar are the famous glaciers of the area located towards the south-east of Har-ki-Dun. Towards west, one can find the Bandar Punch Mountain while camping around.

Ukhimath is the winter seat of Kedarnath, as well as the winter home of the priest who presides over his worship. After the Kedarnath temple closes for the winter, a movable image of Kedarnath is brought in procession to Ukhimath, where it resides until the Kedarnath temple reopens in late April or early May.

This picture shows the outer gateway to the temple complex, which is not only brightly painted and decorated, but two full stories tall the wall also serves as the back wall of buildings inside. The stones piled at lower left were for some sort of construction project, which was in full swing when I visited since summer is the “slow” season ritually speaking, it made sense for the place to be torn up them. And the nearby buildings are clearly residential, since a young girl is visible at upper right.

These are the twin ranges of the meadows of Ali and Bedni that simply lie on the famous routes of the Roopkund Trek. And the famous Bedni Bugyal trekking is all for exploring the deep virgin forests, gurgling brooks, breath-taking campsites, miles of undulating meadows and Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti towering over them.

Camping at Bedni Bugyal brings the most fascinating impressions of the Garhwal Himalayas at its lap with the most undiluted nature’s wonders. The trek of which starts from Lohajung (8,300 ft), a tiny pass, in the heart of the greater Himalayan range, 85 kms from Karanprayag. From Lohajung, a well marked descending trail through mixed forests will take you to an iron bridge across the Neel Ganga River.

Once crossing this river the real trek starts, which is then switched back to Didina- a small village and could be the best camping site for you in the Garhwal ranges; and then the perfect raising towards the twin meadows of Ali and Bedni Bugyal makes a great start.
