Uruguay is a South American country known for its verdant interior and beach-lined coast. The capital, Montevideo, revolves around Plaza Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel. It leads to Ciudad Vieja (Old City), with art deco buildings, colonial homes and Mercado del Puerto, an old port market with many steakhouses. La Rambla, a waterfront promenade, passes fish stalls, piers and parks.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Colonia del Sacramento

Day 02: Colonia del Sacramento: Half-day Walking Tour
Breakfast at the hotel. Half-day Colonia Walking Tour In this visit we will know the city of Colonia del Sacramento which was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. We will discover the little stone streets, the old buildings, the fort, the port, the Spanish and Portuguese houses, the center and the Rambla that borders the Old City until the Real de San Carlos. At this point we will be able to see the Bullring, the Hippodrome and the Old Port.

Day 05: Half-day Montevideo City Tour

The city was founded as a military settlement, a small fortress, on a peninsula surrounded by the sea, used as a shelter for the first inhabitants of this area in 1724. It was divided into three: the “Ciudad Vieja” (old city), the “Ciudad Nueva” (new city), and the “Ciudad Abierta” (open city). This walking tour starts at Independence Square where a statue of our national hero “Jose Gervasio Artigas”, guards his mausoleum and where the iconic “Palacio Salvo” is located.

You will be introduced to the history of the city through the “Puerta de la Ciudadela”, ancient remains of the outer walls of Montevideo, original entrance to the citadel. You will visit the Solis Theatre, the charming pedestrian area, the Torres Garcia Museum and the “Puro Verso” library, one of the oldest buildings in the area where we will make a stop for a coffee or fresh drink. The tour continues onto the Constitution Sq. where you will visit the Cathedral, the Cabildo and then continue walking across the Old City onto the Carnival Museum, where you will discover the Spanish tradition and African roots of the Uruguayan Carnival. The tour ends at the lively port market where we suggest enjoying lunch in one of the typical local “parrillas” (Please take note that the tour can be done also starting at the Port Market and that theatre and museum visits are subject to opening hours).

After Breakfast Half-day Punta del Este City Tour In this visit, we will have the possibility to know the most important tourist attractions of Punta del Este. On the tour, we will visit the main avenue Juan Gorlero, the artisans market, the yacht port, the church Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, the lighthouse, and the beaches. We will also see the residential neighborhoods of Golf, San Rafael, Beverly Hills, Rincón del Indio and Cantegril. We will have time to stop at “Punta Ballena” and “Casa Pueblo” to watch the sunset (entrance fee not included).

A complet tour in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Visit the “Old Town”: Constitution Square or Plaza Matriz with its Cathedral and Cabildo. We’ll see the Teatro Solís, Independence Square with the monument to Artigas (national hero) and his Mausoleum. Continuing on the main avenue “18 de Julio”, Square Entrevero and Legislative Palace are the main atractions.

Then, we’ll head to the neighborhood of the “Prado” with its famous Rose Garden and Memorial “La Diligencia”. Returning by the “Parque Batlle y Ordóñez,” we pass by the Obelisk, La Carreta monument and Centenario Stadium. Then thw tour will take us to the residential area of Carrasco before coming back to the center along the beautiful road right next to Montevideo’s marvelous beaches.

Drive along the Mansa Beach of Punta del Este to visit the residential suburbs of Beverly Hills, El Golf, Cantegril, San Rafael with its spectacular mansions and summer houses of diverse modern architecture. Then, return driving along the Brava Beach, to reach the Yacht Port and entering the city center called la Peninsula.

We will head to Casa Pueblo, the architectural symbol of Punta Ballena. More than a building, Casapueblo is a true piece of art created by Carlos Paez Vilaro. Located on the cliffs overlooking the sea, the Uruguayan artist set up his studio and museum, which also functions as a hotel and restaurant. For its unique charm, Casapueblo has stood as one of the most visited tourist spots of the coast of Maldonado, located just 12 km from Punta del Este.

Proceed to enjoy a full day in the Scottish capital. You will visit Edinburgh Castle which dominates the city from its 400 foot rock where you will see the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, now back in Scotland where it belongs. You can also visit the private apartments of Mary Stuart and St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest building in the city which dates back to the 11th century. Continuing down the Royal Mile, you will visit Saint Giles’ Cathedral. Founded in the 1100s, it is a triumph of 14th and 15th century architecture with a crown spire that has dominated the Edinburgh skyline for 500 years. It became the church of John Knox during the Reformation and contains memorials to many great Scots, including Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns.

Day 03 Colonia- Montevideo (By Road) (180 kms / 2 hrs 40  mins appx.)
Proceed to starting with Jedburgh Abbey, one of the border abbeys founded by David 1 in around 1138 for Augustinian canons. The church is mostly in the Romanesque and Gothic styles and is remarkably complete. Remains of the cloister buildings have recently been uncovered and finds from the excavations, including the 12th century ‘Jedburgh comb’ are on display in the award winning visitor centre. You will visit the ruins of the stunning, Melrose Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded by King David I circa 1136. It was largely destroyed by an English army in 1385 but rebuilt in the early 15th century. It is now probably the most famous ruin in Scotland because of the elegant and elaborate stonework which remains. You will finish the day with a visit to Dryburgh Abbey. One of the four famous Borders, founded in the reign of David I. It is also the burial place of Field Marshall Earl Haig and Sir Walter Scott.

Proceed to you will drive through the area known as the Trossachs in the heart of Scotland, stopping by Loch Lomond, the largest stretch of inland water in Britain, and framed by lovely mountain scenery. The landscape of this area has played a significant part in the history and literature of Scotland. It was the inspiration and setting for Sir Walter Scott’s major work, “The Lady of the Lake”, inspiring the first tourists to venture to Highland Scotland. You will travel through the Argyll Forest one of the most beautiful areas in the country before continuing north through Glencoe with its spectacular landscape and on to Fort William which nestles beneath the highest mountain in Great Britain – Ben Nevis.
