By coming to Monaco, you are already taking the first step on a unique journey. You will be dazzled at every turn, with every corner of the Principality packed with treats. From Monaco-Ville to Monte-Carlo, via Fontvieille or La Condamine, there’s so much to see. Your souvenir photo album will be superb!

Monaco-Ville
No trip to the Principality is complete without a visit to Monaco-Ville. Lose yourself in the colourful and narrow streets of what the locals call “The Rock”, and don’t forget to take a tour of the St. Martin and St. Barbe gardens. Surrounded by the most beautiful Mediterranean trees, savour the breathtaking sea views.

Monte-Carlo
After being enchanted by the Rock, head to the picture-perfect Casino de Monte-Carlo. Discover the splendid new-look square outside one of Monaco’s most iconic venues, with the Hôtel de Paris on one side and the Café de Paris on the other… Cameras and smartphones are always at the ready here! Admire the varied landscapes of this part of the Principality, from the magnificent gardens of La Petite Afrique to the luxury shopping experience of the One Monte-Carlo not to be overlooked.

Fontvieille
If you’re looking for a marvellous – yet more local – perspective of Monaco, then you’ve come to the right place. This district was entirely reclaimed from the sea over thirty years ago, and has its own special atmosphere. You and your camera will be charmed by its energy!

Condamine
You don’t want to miss Monaco’s central district, and you’re absolutely right. La Condamine stretches around Port Hercule, and is home to a diverse atmosphere. Around the Port, with the starting grid of the Formula One Grand Prix which makes for a perfect photo, in the streets with their shops or around the Place d’Armes at the foot of the Palace, there is something to suit every taste…

The Tête de chien
Before you leave us, take a climb (550 metres to be precise), up to the Tête de Chien promontory (the “Dog’s Head”) and open your eyes wide. This is the ideal place from which to enjoy the most spectacular views of the Principality. You come here at your own risk, however… as you may not want to leave!

Then, you can follow the road made famous by Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief, as they picnic while admiring the view over the Principality. Then, once in Monaco, you can begin your stay at Hôtel Fairmont Monte-Carlo (****). The valet will take care of your vehicle to let you settle quickly in your room with a terrace from which to admire Italy on your left, France on your right and Monaco at your feet.

For your first exotic evening, go to the Gaia restaurant to sample their Mediterranean cuisine of Greek inspiration. The ‘blue hour’ is the time for a few minutes stroll to the French border, where you can have fun moving freely from one country to the other on the few metres separating Monaco from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (in France), somewhere between the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort (****) and the Monte-Carlo Beach (*****).

The afternoon will take you to Italy: San Remo, barely a half-hour drive from Monaco, a Ligurian town where you can enjoy a very special, very Italian atmosphere and dine on pasta with seafood, or just pizza you can nibble as you stroll by the sea in the bustling evening ambience.

Monaco most beautiful gardens
In this day and age a new craze for gardens has emerged. Without doubt, the Principality of Monaco and its surroundings harbour real treasures in this domain. Careful not to lose its roots under urban development, the Principality has established a solid policy of garden and park development, with more than 250,000 m2 for a city-state of 195ha, which puts its second in Europe, just after Vienna. Everywhere precious rare species mix in harmony with flowers and plants symbolically simple and fresh.

Exotic Garden of Monaco
High on the cliffs overlooking Monaco, the Exotic Garden is a showcase for the exuberance, strangeness and surrealism of nature.

St Martin Gardens
The Principality’s first public garden, opened in 1816, was built on an abandoned plot in order to provide work for residents when famine hit the Principality.

The Casino Gardens
The gardens of the Société des Bains de Mer are very closely linked to the development of a particular part of the Principality of Monaco: Monte-Carlo. The area took off in around 1893 when the Casino was established on Spélugues rock, which was previously parched and bare.

The Japanese Garden
This garden, created in 1994 at the request of Prince Rainier III in accordance with the strictest principles of Zen design by landscape architect Yasuo Beppu (Grand Prix at the Osaka Flower Exhibition in 1990), transports visitors to the land of the rising sun, even as they remain in the Principality.

Sculptures trails
Monaco, an open-air museum . At the instigation of Prince Rainier III, the Principality of Monaco acquired a rich collection of artworks, and that cultural policy continues today under the reign of Prince Albert II. Sculpture occupies a special place in that cultural offering, with over 200 works to be found in the gardens, streets and squares of Monaco.

The works also offer an insight into the history of the Principality itself, with many being dedicated to the iconic Princes, personalities, events and places of Monaco.

Monaco-Ville Sculpture Path
Snapshot of Monaco’s history through its sculptures and buildings.

Fontvieille Sculpture Path
Fontvieille is one of Monaco’s newest districts, built on 23 hectares of land reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s. It is also one of the most landscaped areas of the Principality, with numerous gardens and beautiful sculptures.

Monte-Carlo Sculpture Path
Start at the top of the “French-style” Boulingrins gardens, which date back to 1865 and take their name from the game of boules, played as early as the 17th century.

Shopping in Monaco
From the lanes of the old town where the shopkeepers display their traditional souvenirs to the retail stores of the Métropole, the Allées Lumières, or Fontvieille Shopping Centre with their windows of clothes, decorations, leather goods and presents, all that you could wish for you can find in the Principality!

Fontvieille Shopping Centre
The Fontvieille Shopping Centre combines practicality and completeness with elegance. Indeed with its large car park and 36 shops including hi-fi equipment, music, furniture and clothes together with various restaurants, a Carrefour hypermarket and a McDonalds, you will find everything you need on a daily basis.

Marché de La Condamine
La Condamine Market opened on 18 November 1880, when Count F. Gastaldi was mayor. It was renovated for the first time in 1992 to reflect evolutions in foods and consumer expectations.

YCM Gallery
The establishments located on the quai of the Yacht Club de Monaco offer a dedicated shopping haven at the heart of the Port Hercule.

Metropole Shopping Monte-Carlo

The Heritage Trees Trail
It’s definitely worth following the Heritage Trees Trail… conceived by the Department of Urban Amenities, the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Tourist and Convention Authority, it will give you a complete view of the Principality’s green heritage.

The Principality of Monaco is the second smallest independent state in the world. In an area of two square kilometres, gardens and parks occupy 470,000 square metres, that is more than 20% of the country’s territory.

The Exotic Garden, the Princess Grace Rose Garden, the Little Africa Gardens, the St Martin Gardens and the Japanese Garden are among the best known, but Monaco has many other public and private green spaces.

It is important to protect this green heritage, and numerous initiatives have been launched to improve preservation.

A Tree Code was adopted in 2011. This code also enabled some plants to be classified as “remarkable” trees,
as a result of which the Heritage Trees Trail was born in 2013. The trail presents a selection of the most remarkable plants in the eastern part of the Principality (Monte-Carlo District, Larvotto).

What is a Heritage Tree?
Monaco’s Heritage Trees are identified according to three criteria:
1) Biological: According to the calculation of the tree’s circumference, taking account of the life span for the oldest species, with the exception of Arecaceae (palm trees) which function in the opposite way. The calculation for these takes account of the height of the trunk;
2) Botanical: Depending on the rarity of the species and its presence within the country;
3) Social/Environmental: Depending on the origin and history of the tree, as well as the extent to which it is representative of a location.

More than a thousand trees have been awarded the status of heritage tree. They are all identified, flagged and marked with a plaque providing some information.

Special provisions have been put in place regarding how the trees should be treated and, if required, moved.

Monaco’s Heritage Trees Trail is being offered as part of the “Monaco makes a commitment against deforestation” initiative, in which numerous Monegasque organisations and companies are taking part.

The Trail is soon to be expanded. It will include plants located in the west of the Principality (Monaco-Ville, Fontvieille). This “New Heritage Trees Trail” will present the Principality’s 92 most remarkable species.
